To answer some questions that have come up:
1) According to Meredith at UPA HQ, there is state precedence to having gender
ratio for coed state tourneys set at 5-2.. it seems like whatever folks agree
on. I believe that over time, this will be less of an issue as teams recruit
more women to
play and when there are more women playing HS Ultimate in Maine. We should
shoot for 4-3, re-evaluate based on reality on the ground, and go from there.
Perhaps set ratio at 4-3 (with flexibilty to play 5-2 if captains agree?)
2) Open teams will be able to compete in a coed state tourney assuming they can
meet gender requirements above. NOTE BOTH OPEN STATE TOURNEY AND POTENTIAL COED
STATE TOURNEY WOULD BE SEPARATE EVENTS OPEN TO ALL MAINE TEAMS IDEALLY CONDUCTED
ON
SEPARATE SUNDAYS IN MAY/JUNE (for coed obviously, teams need to meet agreed upon
gender ratio).
3) There is a coed club event every August (YCC) along with open and womens
divisions. Maine may want to consider sending a team. However, preference does
go to established leagues, which we do not have yet.
4) I think a Maine youth womens team is a great idea if we can find coaches for
this.
5) I am seeing logistic issues for the coed state championship have come up
based on input from some teams... I will address below..

Over the past month, only 4 teams have gotten back saying they would be
interested in attending a coed state tourney. That is a pretty low number since
UPA sponsoring for the event would cost $150... food and drink at least another
$150. If you
assume the site is free, that is $300 / 4 teams = $75 per team. Perhaps a bit
on the steep side? We need more teams interested in this event! Or is it OK
for teams that have expressed interest to have that high an entry fee?

Second, if we schedule the coed state tourney for 6/8, we run into conflicts
with end-of-high-school events. Also, this is too late for private schools like
Hyde. Any ideas out there regarding scheduling during a more ideal time? I
know folks are
looking to organize more local tourneys as well as travel out-of-state to
tourneys, but how about one of the mid-May Sundays (5/11 or 5/18)?

An option we could also do is not have the coed state tourney UPA sponsored
(i.e. no trophies) but just UPA sanctioned (i.e. just insurance). That would
shave off $50 on the UPA fee.

What are folks' thoughts about this... please give your thoughts ASAP since UPA
sponsorship fees are due into the UPA ASAP... Thanks!
