Re: [maineyouthultimate] Upcoming Spring 2008 MYU Season - State Championships

Hash -

My thoughts from Costa Rica, also to be taken with the grain of salt that I won't be in Maine for any of the discussed events (I'll be back by the end of June):

I likewise like the ideas. Thanks for your thought and work in all of this. As I'm not in that loop anymore I can't really speak to exact timing of tourney dates, but I think we at Hidcoast Mat (the hat tourneys) would be open to combining events. It took relatively little to organize them; the main problem being turnout and player recruitment....SO, if everything goes awesome and people are psyched and weather is good and spirit is up, we coul even at the beginning of June plan to do a Hat tourney in a couple weeks and fit in three again on top of the co-ed event. The difference obviously is that the co-ed tourney would be a team event where the hat tourneys are just pickup, and hence a lot of the players (ie all the non high school players, possibly as high as 50-60 percent) wouldn't have the chance to play in June if we totally morphed events. Does that make sense? Anyhoo, as said, I think we'd be open to it, and would certainly be interested in hosting it whatever the case.

We've got a great relationship with the field and school and use it weekly in the summer for pickup. We did the hat tourneys on the same day as we usually did pickup and there were no field costs at all. I assume that'll be a similar relationship next summer, but the folks to talk to about that right now might be Sam Auciello (olleicua@...), Kalen (Kalen7@...), Greg Dorsey (mn8luv@...), or Bruce Morehouse (brucem@...), who I have sent this note to as well so that they know what's up.

I think that 4/3, although as Mark says maybe a bit of a stretch, is a good goal nevertheless. The goal here is to grow and encourage teams to recruit women to play, after all. I also think that we could be somewhat lax the first year or two about allowing teams to bring pickup players with them to the tourneys - by that I mean other highs school students/friends who might not be from a school with an ulti program but are into playing, or aren't normally on the school's team, etc. Just so that the magic number of 5 women wouldn't be so daunting to some teams. I know for Watershed there'd be no problem meeting 4/3, and I believe the Loggerheads (Brunswick) would also be fine already. It's going to be a small tourney the first year anyway, so teams that can't quite cut it can make it a goal for next year, or maybe look to pickup.

I like the sound of starting some youth club action. Worth more discussion for sure, maybe as another event even.

I am likewise totally into the idea of a league/season... are scrimmages already planned that could be reported? I know last year we began talking seriously about it but it never quite happened. I think Tremuloides would be into that, although again I'm speaking for people three thousand miles away.

Cool - glad this action is being discussed widely and early! Thanks again Hash and everyone -

Hash,

I like your ideas. The State Championship should be the culmination of the season and having it at the end makes a lot of sense.

An additional co-ed event, sounds good as well.

A couple of thoughts/questions:

- Will open teams, having already competed in the open championship, also be able to compete in the co-ed event?
- If we go 4/3 for co-ed, realistically there would have to be at least 5 girls per school. That seems like a bit of a stretch right now and it might limit participation. 5/2 may be better.
- Have you given any thought to a youth co-ed "club" event? Maine youth could recruit between schools and communities. Open it up to other New England States. Make sure that we include a pick-up team.
- Is there is any interest in a Maine girls team? There are a couple New England Tournaments for girls.

Mark

The Greely graduation is June 8th. Other High Schools probably have similar dates.

Greetings!
I have heard from several folks regarding improvements to last spring's season of Maine Youth Ultimate. There are 2 suggested changes several folks in MYU have suggested. Please let folks know if you have any concerns or objections to these
potential changes from last season:

1) Have the Maine Open (i.e. open to both genders) HS Championships scheduled for the Sunday of Memorial Day weekend - Sunday, 5/25

Note that May only has 4 Sundays this year. Folks have expressed an interest in having a longer spring season to go to more out-of-state tourneys and to host more in-state tourneys. Having the state tourney the second Sunday in May (5/11) is too
early and leaves too much of a gap between states and New Englands (6/1). Assuming we can get
Cumberland Fairgrounds for that date, there is next to zero chance of a rainout (Fairgrounds do not rain out).

In the past when we had states on Memorial Day weekend, some teams were not able to have certain players attend due to family commitments. If given enough notice, do folks see that as an issue? Also, we could schedule for the Sunday before
Memorial Day (5/18) but that is typically weekend of White Mountain, and many coaches and Rich (i.e. Red Tide folks) are gone.

2) ADD a Maine Coed HS Championships the second Sunday in June (6/8) - Location TBA, perhaps in the Midcoast in Camden? Watershed and Danji were highly successful last summer organizing 3 youth hat tourneys. The first was in mid-June. What are
folks' thoughts about having that first hat tourney held as a coed state championship? That still leaves July and August for coed hat tourneys. Like the Open championship, it would open to all teams in Maine. The gender ratio would be 4-3, which
may encourage more schools to recruit more women to play disc. Would 6/8 be too near the end of school and proms and all that sort of thing?

Also, regarding an official youth league, I have not heard back from many folks regarding that. For this year, would folks be interested in just getting scores of their scrimmages into UPA score reporter? Is everyone familar with doing that?
Score reporter takes both individual scrimmages between teams as well as tourneys to calculate RRI for seeding purposes. All the divisions use it...

Please send your thoughts! Thanks!

Hi folks - I like both ideas, especially the co-ed championship. (I agree with Mark's comment that a 5/2 co-ed ratio may be more realistic at this point.) ...
