Friends,
Some of you know that I’ve been a bit discouraged lately about my hip recovery. Up until the first weekend of October, I felt like I was making steady progress. That weekend set me back a good month to six weeks, I thought. On Thursday night, October 1, I went to the U2 concert in Charlottesville. I walked a long way from where I parked to the stadium and back (twice) and stood for much of 3 hours. Then, on Saturday the 3rd I had my first really long bike ride (35 miles) and that night I had a chair collapse under me at a wedding. Since that time pain has been a fairly regular thing. Jayne reminded me that it was actually on Friday the 2nd (after the U2 concert and before the bike ride and chair incident) that I began searching the internet reading more about recovery from my injury than I ever had.
Since that night, I’ve been convinced that I am suffering avuncular necrosis, that is, dying of the ball of the hip—which is a possible complication of my injury. I didn’t schedule a doctor’s visit because I had one already scheduled for today. In between, I’d had a bike ride with one of my physical therapists and he was pretty sure my pain (because it isn’t constant but episodic) was NOT a sign of the ball dying. I believed him for awhile but it has seemed to be more constant lately AND it’s begun to bother me when I ride my bike, which hadn’t been the case before. My last two rides (30 miles and 17 miles) have both seemed to cause a good bit of pain.
So I was looking forward to seeing my doctor today hoping for a definitive explanation for my pain, expecting he might see signs of avuncular necrosis, and, that we’d begin talking about hip replacement. NOT SO. Bottom line is that while he does not have an explanation for my pain, he does not see signs of avuncular necrosis and it appears the bone is healed. I say “appears” because the break is inside the hip capsule which is surrounded by joint fluid that makes the xray less than fully revealing. If the bone isn’t healed he will see signs of the screws deteriorating. He doesn’t see that either! The most likely explanation of my pain seems to be that the injury and surgical repair causes some small realignment of my hip and pelvis bones and that is causing me back issues. (My most serious pain is very much LIKE the sciatic pains I’ve had since I was twelve off and on. They’ve always been on my left side; now I don’t have them there, but on my right!)
His recommendation: stretching, strengthening, biking and Advil. And he’ll see me again in six weeks.
So that’s what I know.
Barry
