Kia ora Tat!! How's things? Well anyway, the
practices are still going, AND.....they're ok, I suppose.
Ummmm...Aroha and I aren't sure if we're looking forward to the
waananga this weekend, especially me cos I'm off to Otaki,
hopefully Sunday, so I'm hoping the waananga finishes
early. But we really need the practice, and that's for
sure, especially with our waewae stuff. Anyway, it'll
be good to see you and Manu again, this weekend and
then again, a couple of weeks after this weekend's
waananga. So we'll catch up with ya then. Ciao.
O.K you Taranaki lot, how's it going down there!
No ones talked about how the practises are going,
and about our waananga this weekend. Shall we just
wait, and you fullas just surprise us when we come
down???<br>Looking forward to seeing you all!<br><br>Naa Tat

next door to each other).<br>Check out the club
photo's and add yours, especially if you have any of us
when we came over, I'm sure the rest of the w'aanau
would like to see what we did over there (just the Mau
Raakau ones...we don't want to show them EVERTHING we
did...parties...beaches...holidaying in the sun...no not THOSE ones!)<br>Anyway

you enjoy your stay here and we'll definately be
catching up!<br><br>Naaku noa <br>Naa Tat

That is the beautiful thing about jujitsu, at
least. I don't know much about the other martial arts,
but this system has so much knowledge to impart
because of the breadth of the techniques taught, that my
sensei told us that we wouldn't be able to learn it all.
I too beleive that it is the journey that counts,
and to be honest, aside from religion, my martial
arts training has shaped my life the most overall. I
usually just smile when people who don't know better tell
me that I am wasting my time learning this stuff.
Anyway, thanks for the encouragement and good luck to you
as well.
I'll see what I have, were doing our website to get the young interested in the
preservation of these treasures for the future. It will be
www.islandwarriors.com, but isn't ready yet.
Bruddah, keep ya head up, and keep trudgin on!
When you get that belt around ya waist you'll realize
how little you know, as I am in my 19th year, and
still feel like I know squat, it's the journey that
counts! Good luck!
Your not wrong there GIRLFRIEND!!!<br>For the
first time we could do what we pleased, eat, swim, eat,
sunbathe, eat, laugh, eat, sing, eat, talk,
eat...eat...eat...and NO trainging for the whole weekend!!! And you'd
think we'd sleep all day well peoples, there was just
too much too do...eat, play, eat, sing,
eat...eat...eat...<br><br>'E mi'i nui mo te tau 'ou taatou kaatoa, kaua e

reply...<br><br>Happy Holidays and keep SURFING!!!
A big shout out to the whaanau who comitted
themselves and turned up to Raawhiti at the
weekend.<br><br>AAAArooohaaaa to you all who couldn't make it. It was probably
the most laid back and informative Te Koohao waananga
I've eva been to.<br><br>Great to have the carving
gears out ... I got myself a taiaha - thanks for the
Puriri Laurie! - but if it wasn't for Hone Tama and
Whitianga bursting to tutu all weekend, I would've come
home with my plank of timber!! So, a big RAAAAHOOOO
for that!<br><br>Not to mention the humungus kutai
(mussels), tipa (scallops), tio (oysters) and kina
(Yum!).<br><br>And the dessert for brekkie!!! <br><br>So, great
rehearsal for next week (Xmas). From us here at Langs, we
wish you all a choice time with your whaanau over the
FUN break. See you all around New Years at Paakanae,
Hokianga.
Oh yes, also, I am interested in pictures and
anything else that you would like to share. I don't have a
scanner or anything, so anything I do has to be by mail
and it isn't a good idea to post addresses and phone
numbers, so I don't ask.
I'm impressed. I admire those who are willing to
take it upon themselves to reach out and help others
in life, utilizing skills and understanding form
experience. I imagine it is easier for you to be empathetic
to those you work with. I am totally with you when
it comes the the learning and sharing part in
regards to time. I wanted to have my black belt over a
year ago, but juggling everything else like school and
work makes it hard to practice enough to achieve the
level of proficiency that I need and want. Ah well, I
am taking less credits this semester, so perhaps now
I will have the gumption to get more serious about
it.
Yes here at our Halau in CO, we teach the martial
traditions of the Philippines (Kali,) Hawaii (Mea Kauas
weapons) and empty hand fighting Kui'alua)Samoan War Knife
(Au Upega, Nifa Oti)and the martial traditions, and
warrior dance of all of the above. Being a Halau and
traveling to perform and or learn, I have also done quite a
bit of Haka, and have some received training in
Taiaha, though in comparison to the other members of the
club, it was informal, and probably only scratches the
the surface of the capabilities of the weapon. Our
intervention program for the youth is much like a Tikanga
(cultural reclamation program) and in this we emphasize
values, spirit, our universal connection, mana, enveloped
within all of the aforementioned. I am an ex-gang
member, and formal U.S soldier so I enjoy showing our
kids that it is never too late to change. Hey I have
some mpegs of our group stickfighting, and dancing i
can send if you like.<br>I am also about ready to
release the first book for young polys on the warrior
tradtions of all of our native islands, which, (I hope, be
well accepted). Theres so much learning and sharing to
do, and not enought time ya know?
Polynesian. Thank you for the correction. I don't
like misspelling words, and that one is a habitual
mistake from earlier days. And yes, if more people would
open their minds, the world would be a much better
place.<br><br>Actually, I am a student of jujitsu, which is Japanese, but
since before my brother came back form living in New
Zealand, I have especially developed an interest in Maaori
weaponry and wish that I had both better access to
reliable information about it, and access to training with
those weapons, especially the taiaha, which in my mind
is the most versatile fighting staff designed that I
have ever seen.<br><br>So what about you? Have you
trained in any systems?
I am in southeastern Idaho, in Shelley. I am not
Polynesean (did I spell that right?), but I have a great
interest and appreciation for and in learning about other
cultures, and most especially the arts of war. It is one of
my hobbies, so to speak.
Thanks for da invite! Look forward to promulgating the spirit of kokua (Mutual
Sharing) with ya! I am glad the wananga went well. (too bad im jus'a po'
bruddah:) or id be ova in Aotearoa asap!
P.S: It's good to put a face to the name, thanks for sharing, I noticed one of
the weapons in the photo...there's the connection between your people and ours,
your kuupuna and ours!<br><br>MAHALO
Teenaa koe e 'oa, firstly welcome to the w'anau,
I tried to download your stick fighting art and
could not access...but...te mea nui kua tae mai kei

awesome, spiritual, physical, mind blowing waananga over
the weekend with our waa'ine MAU RAAKAU!!! And I
can't wait to put out some photo's of the weekend, If
there is anyone out there that I can give these photo's
to, to scan them I will muchly appreciate that and I
think you would too! (Preferbly in Auckland), however
I'm sure the other waa'ine that went might have some
photos that they would like to post!<br><br>Keep the
koorero going!<br><br>Tat
