Fellow Tri-ers,
I have run the Boston Marathon on Monday and decided to
publish my experiences for the wanna-be-marathon-finishers. I have done
almost everything you're not supposed to and enjoyed some quality pain.
I did not heed some quality advice Keith gave me and improved on pain
quality. Anyway, I am sending a tentative cover for the tentative book
for a little smile. I can give you more tips on what not to do. After
all we gotta have fun sometimes, too.
Train hard, run smart, survive to enjoy the glory...
Bunyamin, the never-learning lousy tri-ing athlete.
<<Marathon Book Cover.jpg>>
This is a new event that will take place on 16 Nov and will be run
through downtown Monterey, Cannery Row, and PG. They are advertising it
as a flat, fast course. According to the BSIM web site, on-line
registration will open on 1 May at http://www.bsim.org and will be
limited to 3,000.

My plan for Wildflower group camping is fairly
simple. I will drive down on Tuesday to poach a site. I will try to
get one of the paved sites in Loop A (the same loop that
we had last year). If successful, I will let the team know what site I've
got. As I recall, there should be plenty of room for anyone with a tent
to set up around my camper. Finally, I will host a team dinner on Friday and
Saturday night. Last year those who went for the Tri-Cal pasta dinner
were a little disappointed. This year we should eat as a team in our own
site. I will pass out more info on Wednesday after my campsite poaching trip.

Team, It's once again time to sign up for the Armed
Forces Triathlon Championship help annually at Pt. Mugu (now known as NavalBaseVenturaCounty). This year's
event takes place on 21 June. It is an Olympic distance tri designed to
provide the best military triathletes with an opportunity to compete for a spot
in the international championship in Holland (See attached
schedule for details). The top six men and six women will be selected to
compete in Holland. Last year our very
own Lynn Fodrea earned such a spot.
In order to compete, you must complete a Navy
Sports application and forward it to Millington. See http://mwr.navy.mil/mwrprgms/sports.htm
for more details. Do not be intimidated by last years winning
times. If a sub 2:10 Olympic time isn't in your
immediate future, you can still compete in the "open" division as
Craig and I did last year.
Feel free to contact me if you have
questions. I will be submitting my app today.

Here are the scores I was able to retrieve from the website.
Craig Sylvester 4:02:53
Amy Nesbitt 3:13:23
Rob Bailey 3:11:42
I was unable to retrieve Bunyamin's from the website for some reason.

This is a resend of a previous message(for some reason I did not
receive it through the group-mail-list)... By the way, Thanks Keith, I
will try to finish just for you guys...
Fellow Triathletes,
I have received several requests to extend the deadline for uniform item
collection. Considering the fact that I will be in Boston from tomorrow
till Tuesday, it might be just better to extend it until next week
Tuesday. The box will be in the same place (Glasgow 241). This means
that I can turn them in on Wednesday and get them back the next
Wednesday (30th of April, the week of Wildflower). I hope this won't
cause any inconvenience to the ones already turned in. Have fun
training...

Fellow Triathletes!
Many of you have been asking me about silkscreening, and its time has finally arrived! It is finally time for putting the M2T2 logo on our racing clothes (More info on silkscreening is at the end of this message). I will put a box in Keith Olson's office (Glasgow 241) so that you can deposit your clean t-shirt / zip tri jersey / power skinsuit / sweater, etc. I will also put a piece of paper you should write what you have deposited so that I know who brought what. Please write your name with an instant marker somewhere on the t-shirt, too. I am shooting for a Wednesday afternoon deadline since I will be leaving for Boston on Thursday. If this causes any inconvenience, please contact me so that we can arrange something or extend the reception time. Any questions, send them my way... While things get closer to Big Sur and Wildflower, I wish everybody a great training season... Working for you...

Silkscreening information: On the front of the uniform, we put our basic logo which you can find in the Yahoo Groups page. On the back, we have the following: " Monterey Military Triathlon Team California E=M2T2" (in nicer composition of course.) Overall, it looks great, if you ask me...

The cost for both sides is $5.00 ($2.50 * 2) if we get 10 items or
more-which should not be a problem. Last year we had covered this cost from
team's budget, but I am not sure if we will be doing that again this year. I can
give a definite response after tomorrow's meeting on Duathlon. As far as bike
shops go, we receive a 10% discount on parts, but I am not sure about the
tune-up-I do not think we do. Your best bet could be the Josselyn's which has
reasonable prices as far as I know. See you around...

I am sorry but I may have missed this but is there a cost involved?
Additionally, do M2T2 have a price break somewhere for tri-bike tune-ups? I
would like to get a minor tune up before Wildflower.

Fellow Triathletes!
Many of you have been asking me about silkscreening, and its time has
finally arrived! It is finally time for putting the M2T2 logo on our racing
clothes (More info on silkscreening is at the end of this message). I will put a
box in Keith Olson's office (Glasgow 241) so that you can deposit your clean
t-shirt / zip tri jersey / power skinsuit / sweater, etc. I will also put a
piece of paper you should write what you have deposited so that I know who
brought what. Please write your name with an instant marker somewhere on the
t-shirt, too. I am shooting for a Wednesday afternoon deadline since I will be
leaving for Boston on Thursday. If this causes any inconvenience, please contact
me so that we can arrange something or extend the reception time. Any questions,
send them my way... While things get closer to Big Sur and Wildflower, I wish
everybody a great training season... Working for you...

Silkscreening information: On the front of the uniform, we put our basic logo
which you can find in the Yahoo Groups page. On the back, we have the following:
" Monterey

Triathlon Team
California
E=M2T2" (in nicer composition of course.) Overall, it looks great, if you
ask me...

Ambivalence A Big Part Of The Day At Ironman
California
By Don Norcross for Ironmanlive.com on Wed, Apr 9th
2003 (1:06 PM).
She loved riding through Camp Pendleton, where at
every turn you're reminded that you're on a military
base. But she couldn’t help but feel a little guilty
about competing in a triathlon while there is a war
going on.
Heidi McKenna resisted the urge. In the early-morning
hours, as 1,665 triathletes huddled in the transition
area before last Saturday's Ralphs California Half
Ironman Triathlon, McKenna found herself wanting to
tap fellow athletes on the shoulder and ask, "Do you
remember there's a war going on?"
McKenna thinks about the war every day. Pretty much
every hour of every day. She's a captain in the
Marines, based at Oceanside's Camp Pendleton, site of
the race's 56-mile bike leg. A fellow officer who
attended a training school with McKenna has been
killed in the war with
Iraq. A good friend is an Arabic linguist. He's on the
front lines, dealing with surrendering Iraqis.
McKenna reads the newspapers. She watches TV. She
knows some of Saddam Hussein's loyal followers have
faked surrendering, only to open fire, killing
American soldiers. "I am cringing, hoping to never
hear that one of my good friends has died," she said.
"I'm pretty worried about him."
Only once did McKenna submit to the temptation last
Saturday and remind an athlete about the war. They
were deep into the 56-mile bike ride. It had been a
while since they'd passed an aid station. McKenna
turned to a fellow rider and said, "Normally, there's
a great crew of Marines (volunteering) here," she
said.
The woman had done the race before. She was familiar
with the aid station, how the Marines, sometimes more
than 100 of them, would enthusiastically yell
encouragement to the athletes, handing out water,
Gatorade, fruit and energy bars, oftentimes shouting
their famous "Hooh-rah!" chant. The first year this
race was held, there were 2,000 Marine volunteers. But
so many
soldiers are serving in Iraq that Camp Pendleton has
turned into a ghost town. The Marines were asked to
supply only 60 volunteers for the race.
"Yeah," the woman said to McKenna as they passed what
once was an aid station. "(The Marines) aren't here
this year."
Replied McKenna: "As long as you don't forget there's
a war going on."
"No," said the woman. "I haven't forgotten."
McKenna has competed in three Ironman races. At last
year's Ironman Hawaii she raced as part of a Marine
Corps team. There were six Marines racing. She was the
only woman. She beat one of the male Marines,
finishing in 12 hours, 31 minutes.
"To just say I beat another Marine, it was pretty
invigorating, I must say," said McKenna.
McKenna stands 5-foot-1. But don't let her size fool
you. She's the strong, independent type. Raised in
Schenectady N.Y., by a single mother, McKenna was
nicknamed "the admiral" by her mother. "I was just
very demanding," McKenna said. "I always knew what I
wanted to do."
One of her hobbies: riding motorcycles.
Against her family's wishes, McKenna married when she
was 18 and left with her husband, who was in the Air
Force, for Hawaii. She majored in international
business at the University of Hawaii but became
intrigued by the military.
"I'm a very organized, structured person," said
McKenna, who has been divorced for five years. "Very
methodical, very goal-oriented."
Out of college, she considered her job options. She
was thinking about joining the Drug Enforcement
Agency, the FBI or the military. A job interview with
the DEA didn't pan out. She picked the Marines,
attended officer training school and graduated as a
second lieutenant.
It was a fellow Marine who convinced McKenna to sample
her first triathlon.
"No way," said McKenna. "I lived in Hawaii. I'm not
doing a triathlon."
She did the sprint race, riding a mountain bike.
"I couldn't wait to do another one," said McKenna, who
has been racing regularly since 1994.
She had mixed feelings about competing last Saturday
in her backyard. On one hand she felt guilty. Here she
had the freedom to swim 1.2 miles in the Oceanside
Harbor, cycle 56 miles through Camp Pendleton's scenic
backcountry and run 13.1 miles along the coast. And in
the back of her mind she knew some of her fellow
Marines were battling blinding sand storms, 100-degree
desert heat, not to mention Iraqi soldiers.
Afterwards, McKenna and her fellow Marines talked
about their Marine triathlete friends who were in
Iraq, wondering what times they might have registered,
had they been able to race. And while she battled
guilt, at the same time she knew those same Marines in
Iraq would have wanted her to race.
"They don't want life to stop," she said. "They don't
want people giving up their hobbies and goals and
passions just because a war's going on. A lot of the
Marines I know were probably going on the web site
trying to find results."
More than anything, what McKenna felt on a cool, windy
Southern California morning was pride, immense pride
that she's a Marine. She wore black cycling shorts
with Marines written down each side. She wore a white
singlet with the Marine Corps emblem, an eagle, a
globe representing the world and an anchor.
She was moved when athletes told her, "Thank you."
"You're awesome." "Go Marines."
She loved riding through Camp Pendleton, where at
every turn you're reminded that you're on a military
base. From the tanks, to the cannons, to the barracks.
At one point during the bike ride, camouflaged Marines
were practicing firing artillery - "I saw that and I
shook my head," said McKenna. "Here I am, in the
middle of a race, at maximum heart-rate. And these
guys are training, probably getting ready to go over
there. I said, 'Well, I guess this helps not to let
everyone forget we're in a war.' "
In San Diego, with its strong Marine Corps and Navy
presence, sentiment runs strong in support of the U.S.
troops in Iraq. Businesses offer military personnel
and their families discounts. Spas offer free services
to military wives. Amusement parks offer discounted
rates or free admission to the military. When the
Padres play at home on Sunday afternoons, the team
often hosts Marines who are in boot camp. When the
Marines were introduced last Sunday, the standing
ovation was deafening. Said McKenna: "I'm thankful
I'm in San Diego."
A communications officer, McKenna could be sent to
Iraq.
"You never know," she said. In the meantime, she
supports her troops by sending care packages to Iraq
twice a week. They're loaded with baby wipes, energy
bars, Triathlete and Runner's World magazines, shampoo
and pictures of models, men with six-pack abs for the
women and well-endowed women for the men.
And she thinks of her friend, the Arabic linguist on
the front lines, anxiously awaiting his e-mails. "I'm
on the seat of my pants every time I read them," she
said. "This guy's in the heart of everything. I do
worry about my friends."

Team,
Since last week's meeting, I have only had 3 responses for interest to visit
Lake San Antonio. Since the number is small, I am going to leave it up to the
individuals to coordinate their plans. I am sorry that I will be unable to join
in on the fun due to classes and other commitments for both Fridays.
For Friday, 11 Apr:
1. Bunyamin Tuner
2. Tim Ray
For Friday, 18 Apr
1. Ray Munoz
If there is anyone else who is interested in going with these folks or would
prefer to go a different day and is looking for some carpooling companions,
please feel free to take it upon yourself to get the ball rolling.
Any questions- just ask.

Fellow Triathletes!
Wildflower and other races are about to happen and you realize that you do
not have a race uniform with the M2T2 logo on! Don't worry! M2T2 comes to the
rescue. Desoto makes great triathlon uniforms and related products, and as M2T2
we have 25% discount on Desoto's regular prices including their wetsuits.
As far as uniforms go, you basically have two options: 1. Power Skinsuit
(red/black/white) or 2. Zip Tri Jersey (r/b/w) with either Tri Short or Power
Tri Short (both black). You can check
them and sizing info on-line at http://www.desotosport.com/products/racing.asp
You can also browse the rest of the site for other products and decide what you
want. I will be collecting your individual orders at the meeting if you can make
it, or via e-mail if you cannot. The information I need from you is simply:
1. What do you want? How many of that thing do you want?
2. What color do you want?
3. What size do you want?
I will consolidate all the orders, send it to Desoto, and have your order
available for pick-up. I will divide the shipment cost equally. I am setting a
tentative deadline to send the order as next Tuesday noon (April 8) since I will
try to have them silkscreened with everything else before Wildflower (Wait for
future e-mails on silkscreening).
That's about it for now. Send me an e-mail if you have any questions.
Stroke hard! Pedal hard! Run hard! But enjoy the tri!

At this week’s meeting we discussed potentially
taking a little “looky-loo” tour our at LakeSan
Antonio next Friday, 11 Apr. or possibly even Friday, 18 Apr. We
thought it might be nice to ride the bike course (since its already marked) and
test the water. If anyone is interested, please contact me by Wed, 9 Apr so
some sort of arrangements can be made for carpooling, etc.
If you aren’t interested in going as far as the lake,
but would like to test out your wetsuit in the chilling local waters, now is the
time to begin our Open Water Swims. If you would like to propose a day and time
or are merely interested, please let me know so we can begin to set some group
swims up as well.
Team,
Please let me know by 1200 today if you would like to help out at the Sea Otter
Classic (11-13 Apr). I have to give our names to the head coordinator this
afternoon. If you wish to help tell me what day is good for you and whether you
want to man an aid station or act as a course marshal. The benefits include Sea
Otter T-shirt, free entry all weekend to the biggest cycling festival on the
planet (dwarfs even that little bike race in France) and our club will receive
cash to help fund stuff like team parties, Wildflower camperships, and race
entry subsidies.
Thanks for the help,
Len
Is anyone interested in a ride this Friday? I was thinking about doing Len's
"Easy 40" : NPS, rec trail north to Marina. Then past Dole plant to
Castroville. Turn right onto 183 and fly with a tailwind into Salinas. Right
on Davis road and left on Blanco. Right on 68 and back into Monterey. Take
Garden Rd by the airport to get back to Mark Thomas and NPS.
I'll probably leave sometime after dropping my son off at school at 0800. If
you're interested, let me know.

> Uniform Items:
> This is just to give everybody a heads-up before your first race comes up and
you realize that you do not have a race uniform with the M2T2 logo on. As far as
team uniforms go, our team receives 25% discount on Desoto products. You have
two options: 1. Power Skinsuit (red/black/white) or 2. Zip Tri Jersey (r/b/w)
with either Tri Short or Power Tri Short (both black). You can check them and
sizing info on-line at http://www.desotosport.com/products/racing.asp . You can
also check their sale items at 40% - which are the older models seemingly and
absolutely fine- at their sale page:
http://www.desotosport.com/products/specials.asp. The 25% team discount does not
apply to sale items. You could probably find the same items at the same sale
price in several other on-line dealers, too. Bunyamin will not send an order to
Desoto until he consolidates all the requests including ones from new members
coming next quarter. So take your time, look around, ask questions, and if you
are interested please send Bunyamin an e-mail with what you want, size and
color.
> Silk Screening:
> We have a local shop that puts our logo on our uniform items. Bunyamin will
wait until all the above orders are processed, because the more people we have
for silkscreening, the cheaper it becomes. Wait for more information on this
issue in April.
> Sea Otter Volunteers:
> Once again the time for the Sea Otter Classic is approaching. This year's
event will take place form 9 - 1> 3 April. For those who haven't heard of this
event, it is advertised as "the unabashed celebration of the bicycle" and last
year there were approximately 25,000 participants and spectators involved. It
takes place mainly at the Mazda Raceway at Laguna Seca. Check out
http://www.seaotterclassic.com/ for details. Most important to our club is the
volunteer opportunity that this event provides. Last year we raised $500 by
providing 14 volunteers in the hospitality tent at various times during the
event. We each basically worked one 4 or 5 hour shift. For this effort, we
get free parking all weekend and unlimited entry to the festival area, a Sea
Otter T-shirt, pretty much all the catered food you can stand (the hospitality
tent is well stocked), and a chance to meet with other local triathlon and
cycling enthusiasts (we share the duties with the Carmel Valley Tri Club).
Additionally, our club gets $500 and lots of left over goodies like water
bottles, sport drink, energy bars, and even some wine since Robert Talbot is a
sponsor. So get ready to volunteer and enjoy the single largest cycling event
in the world> ...right in your own backyard! Len Hamilton is coordinating
volunteers for this event so contact him with any questions or to sign up for
specific dates and times. Spouses are also welcome and encouraged to help out.

> New President:
> Since Len will be leaving this summer, we are open for nominations for a new
team president. We will vote at the meeting on 2 April. If you are interested in
this position, or would like to nominate somebody (ask them first), please let
me know. If you have any questions about the job, give Len a yell ... none of us
really know what he does.

Team,
There has been a change to volunteer positions for Sea Otter. Unlike last year
we will NOT be staffing the VIP tent. This year we have been asked to man the
feed zones and act as course marshalls. If you are interested in doing either
of these jobs, please let me know by 2 April. Contact me if you have questions.
Thanks,
Len
