> This past weekend, Lynn Fodrea, Len Hamilton, and Craig Sylvester competed in
the Armed Forces Championship Triathlon (Olympic Dist.) at Point Mugu. Lynn
was the sixth woman across the finish line with a time of 2:17 (an improvement
of six minutes over last year), earning her a berth in the international
military competition which takes place in Estonia between 15 and 22 July. Len
finished in 2:19, and Craig in 2:26.
>
Congrats to all three.

I'll post more detailed results in the M2T2 files when they become available.

As always, I appreciate folks keeping me aware of such results.

Hey all,

Just wanted to put out the information again for the 5K/10K at DLI this weekend
and that Treasure Island Apps went online June 1. Not sure if it is still open!

For runners (the toughest 10k you'll likely do) the race
is at 0900. Bring a photo ID and park at the lower part
of Presidio off of Lighthouse by the Museum. Cool T-
shirt and great doorprizes at the end. Entry fee is $15
or $25 on race day.

For volunteers, come at 0630 to the lower Presidio and
report to the volunteer booth for assignment. Real easy
stuff like split times, water table or parking czar.
Most volunteer tasks are done by 1030, but they also get
a free ticket for doorprizes and a t-shirt.

Norm Emery helped us out immensly with the DU and DLI gave us all the volunteers
we had out on the course. Please consider doing this and email me back if you
are interested in running or volunteering. I have heard from the following
individuals who want to run, but do not have any volunteers yet. Norm said that
none of these people have sent in an applications and to drop by his office
(b622 1st floor) by Franklin gate by Thrusday and still only pay 15$. If 3-5
volunteers
showed up at 0700 at Museum field (lower presidio) to volunteer, that'd be
great.

Thanks.

Hello Team,

Good news from MWR. We got a pretty good deal after the duathlon for some team
money. MWR is giving us $500 for PG Tri entries. I think we have about 20
people entered. The money will be evenly divided. What I need you to do if you
entered is to dig up your receipt or have Trical send you another one (and they
will if you email them). We need these as proof of entry in order to get the
money back.

Thanks. Happy Training!

Subject: No M2T2 Meeting in June
keolson@...

Greetings all.

We will not be holding an M2T2 meeting this month, as the third Wednesday falls
in the middle of exam week. Here are some notes, though:

1. Congratulations and good luck to the folks who will be graduating this month
or leaving the area. Unfortunately I don't know exactly who that includes, so
please shoot me (or the group) an email if you are departing.

2. In a somewhat-related note, I've created a poll on the Yahoo site to solicit
thoughts on what to do (administratively) when folks leave the area (i.e. remove
from Yahoo Group, distribution lists, etc.). If you have additional comments,
send them to me. I'll close the poll on Friday, 21 June.

3. We've had some outstanding performances since our last meeting:

Napa Valley Tri -- Lynn Fodrea was the first female finisher (1:33:01 1,200yd
/ 17mi / 4 mi).

CA Half-IM -- Mike Johannes (151 out of 1660, 4:37:48) and Bill Conner (730 of
1660, 5:21:20).

Armed Forces Championship -- Lynn Fodrea (2:17:43 Olympic) was the first Navy
female finisher and will go to the international military championship in
Estonia next month; Len Hamilton (2:19:51); and Craig Sylvester (2:26:48).

My apologies if I missed anybody. I greatly appreciate a heads-up on results.
Please send me a note if somebody has done something worth noting.

4. MWR is giving us $500 (from duathlon) for PG Triathlon entry fees. Lynnie
(Fodrea) has the details; please send me a note if you are competing and include
which event you are competing in (sprint, Olympic, etc.). Eventually you'll need
a receipt to show that you paid the entry fee.

5. Lynn is still working the issue of getting team socks; the idea of getting
team sweats is also being explored.

6. Open Water Swims (OWS) are still on Fridays, and Saturday Morning Rides (SMR)
are still at 0800 on Saturdays. Coordination is usually done via email to the
group. See the 15 May meeting minutes for locations.

If anybody has additional info to put out to the team, send it via email. Our
next team meeting will be in mid-July.

Enjoy the break.

JC,
My roommate is trashing a few old diving wetsuits, if your interested. They
are very thin, much like a surfing wetsuit, and one is a farmer john. They are
ratty, but they work. I'll have Lynn pass them to Kristen who'll give them to
the Senior Chief....etc...etc..

I was in Fleet Feet this week and Dave mentioned that their store will soon
be starting a "rent to own" program with their wetsuits. Not sure of the
details (i.e. how much of the rental cost that is applied toward the
purchase, etc) but may be worth checking out. If for nothing else, may be a
good opportunity to try a few styles/sizes out before you buy. I think they
stock Oneil and QR.

Subject: NW Zone Rep's thoughts on Ironman Utah tragedy
desertfrost
Send Email Send Email

Dear Friends,

I’d like to share some of my thoughts with you, as
fellow competitors, volunteers and swim race
organizers, concerning the tragedy that occurred at
Ironman Utah on June 8. I hope that this will be good
"food for thought" as we enter the summer season of
triathlons and open water swim events.

As many of you may know, the inaugural Ironman Utah
triathlon (held near Provo) was affected by adverse
weather conditions which led to the cancellation of
the open water swimming portion of the event while it
was in progress. During the aborted swim, a
55-year-old male competitor died. Many on-line news
sources, particularly Inside Triathlon
(www.insidetri.com) are providing detailed coverage of
the story.

I was not in attendance in Provo, but I have read many
accounts about the mishap, spoken with a participant,
and watched some home video. So far, I’ve read about
60 pages of material written about the event by
reporters, participants and organizers. More is being
written about it every day.

First, I’d like to share with you a summary of the
event, as accurately as I can construct from the
reports that I have.

Ironman events run on a tight schedule. They start at
7am and allow competitors a full 17 hours to complete
a 2.4 mile swim, a 112 mile bike ride and a marathon
run (26.2 miles).

The weather in the days before the race was good, but
high winds and an approaching weather front were
forecast for race morning. The swim took place in Utah
Lake. It’s a lake with a large surface area but is
very shallow, averaging only seven feet in depth. It’s
local knowledge that high winds combined with the
shallow waters make Utah Lake wavy and hazardous on
occasion.

At 6:30am on race morning, winds and surf had picked
up on the water and the course was still being laid
out by the volunteer boat crews. Despite the fact that
the marker buoys were being anchored by cinder blocks,
the buoys were being dragged off station by the high
winds. Swimmers began entering the water at this time
in order to warm up and also to allow sufficient time
for all participants to be in the water at the
appointed start time. (It takes a half-hour to put all
1,500 participants into the water via the launch
ramp.)

Conditions did not improve as it approached 7am. With
less than 10 minutes before the top of the hour, most
of the swimmers were in the water. The winds and waves
made it impossible for the swimmers to hear the race
announcer on the shore. For some reason, some of the
swimmers started taking off seven minutes early. The
race announcer saw this and directed the starter to
fire the starting cannon.

By this time, the forecasted front had hit. Wave
heights got up to six feet and the winds were gusting
at up to 45 knots. The swimmers were swimming in all
directions attempting to chase buoys that were being
blown away. Their efforts were further complicated by
the reduced visibility caused by the high waves, water
spray and dusty air. Volunteers on kayaks were taking
on water. Powerboats had strong, modern radios for
communication with the shore, but it was impossible to
effect communication through the wind noise.

Within minutes after the swim began, the race
organizers decided to cancel the swim. All of the
swimmers had electronic timing chips and there were
numerous powerboats and helicopters. Despite a
well-executed water evacuation plan, it took until
9:30 for all participants to be accounted for. Most
participants did not know that the swim had been
cancelled until they were either brought aboard a boat
or they returned to the shoreline. One powerboat
recovered the body of the lone fatality before
receiving the word about the recall of the swimmers.

The event continued later that day with a modified
70-mile bike ride and a 13-mile run.

For open water race organizers, I’d like to give you
some things to think about:

- WEATHER: It can change quickly in some places in the
Northwest. Do you know what the weather forecast is
for race day? Do you know how adverse weather affects
your venue in particular?
- CONTROL OF THE START: This was a key element that
led to the tragedy in Utah. The race was “started”
when the race management lost control of the ability
to conduct a fair start. If you can not ensure a fair
start, you do not have control of your race. Some of
the open water race guidelines stipulate that the
starter be placed at or in front of the starting line,
which is a good idea! Another very good idea is to
augment the audible start signal with a visual signal
such as red/yellow/green flags.
- HARD START TIME: There was pressure in Utah to get
the race started at 7am in order to give the
participants a full 17 hours to complete the Ironman.
Is your event constrained by a hard start time (e.g.
due to permit restrictions) or can the start be
delayed if necessary? If so, how long can you delay?
Can the event be postponed to another day? Flexibility
here is a nice thing to have.
- HARD COURSE: Is the course that you have unique and
unalterable? If necessary, do you have the flexibility
to modify your course (e.g. shorten or move it) in the
interest of safety?
- EXPECTATION OF DELIVERANCE OR A PARTICULAR COURSE:
The Utah participants spent $375 in entry fees, plus
much more time and money to prepare for their event.
They had a high expectation of having a full Ironman
course, and all of its “amenities” laid out for them.
Do your swimmers have the same expectation? Will they
expect a refund (fully or partially) if you do not
deliver the Golden Gate?*
- VOLUNTEERS/OFFICIALS ACTING ON YOUR BEHALF: It takes
the help of many volunteers to make a swim race
happen. Do they know what to do? Are they trained for
the job? Are you prepared to allow them to act on your
capacity in managing the race?
- DELEGATING AUTHORITY: Who has the authority to start
the race, postpone the race, modify the race and
cancel the race? In USMS races, it is the referee. See
the rule book and local guidelines.

*MY SEA STORY: About three years ago, I was about to
swim across the Golden Gate from San Francisco
northward to Marin County. My expectation that day was
to swim across the Golden Gate, and nothing else. I
was not planning on jumping into a cold San Francisco
Bay for the pure enjoyment of it…I wanted to go across
the Golden Gate. This was particularly exacerbated by
the fact that I was injured with a rib contusion and
taking medication…normally I wouldn’t swim like that,
but I knew that opportunities to swim the Golden Gate
were rare.

On race day, the San Francisco Fog was thick. I could
barely make out the south tower of the bridge from the
start (<400 yards away). The race director announced,
after delaying the start for a while, that we couldn’t
swim across the Golden Gate but that we’d have a
substitute event, swimming along the shore eastward.
This upset many folks, including me, who paid good
money to swim across the Golden Gate and not along the
Presidio beach. The race director, quoting either the
event’s liability release or the company’s policy,
stated that he was within his rights to provide a
modified or substitute event, or cancel the event,
without a refund. That’s where I first learned that
you can’t expect to get a refund if the main event is
substituted or cancelled.

It turned out that the weather conditions worsened to
the point where it was unsafe to even enter the water
at the base of the Golden Gate Bridge. The race
director finally decided to cancel the “substitute”
event, hold a “free” fun swim about a mile down the
beach is a safer area, and give the participants a
credit to a future race. This race director has, and
probably never will, attempt to organize another GGB
swim, and I am aware of no other opportunity available
to the public to swim the Golden Gate that has or will
occur. (The same race director had to cancel a GGB
swim the previous year due to unsafe conditions.) I’m
still waiting for another chance to cross, but I might
be waiting in vain.

I used my race credit the following year to swim from
Alcatraz to San Francisco. I learned then that,
statistically, ten percent of all scheduled Alcatraz
swims organized by all groups are cancelled due to
adverse conditions. Each scheduled swim, however,
incurs fixed costs whether or not an event actually
takes place…thus the need for the race organizer to
not require a refund.

- Sincerely
      Dan Frost

Ladies and Gentlemen,
It has been a pleasure swimming, biking and running with you all.
The competitions have been out of this world...from my first Tri at
San Jose to even the TBF HIT run. I will miss the fellowship with
you great triathletes. Hopefully the east coast will have the same
passion for triathlons as the west coast. I'll find out in 03 when I
get back into the scene. (Maybe one toward the end of this season.)
Good luck to you all during the remainder of this 2002 season and
with all your endeavors. To my NPS bubbas, enjoy the rest of your
time here. Get your thesis done early! Len, Jim, Lynn, Sam and
Keith, I wish you the best. You have turned this club into a class
act, especially the Du. May it continue to grow and train more and
more great triathletes for the military. Just tell newcomers, 'If
Clyde can do one, you can, too.'
If you are ever traveling up I-81 or I-83 near Harrisburg, PA, look
us up. God Bless You all.
Be safe! Train smart! See you on the road!
Clyde out.

Hi,
Sorry I didn't get back to anyone, but I did get down to FF and they
had in fact started renting out a 19 brand wetsuit. Canadian company
I guess. Good stuff. Thanks for the info, and the offer on the
other wetsuit - definitely appreciate it.

Vineman relays will race the same day as Barb's Half Ironman (a
women's only event). Relays will race at both half and full Ironman
distances, and may have between 2-3 members. Each member must
complete the total distance of their leg (e.g. the biker on an
ironman relay must complete the 112 mi. bike - it cannot be shared
between two relay members).

That being said, is there anyone interested in doing a Vineman
relay? I think we can arrange teams as follows: by distance (half v.
full ironman) and type (competitive-aiming to win the event v. fun-
aiming to finish the event).

This is a great chance to get into a race with a minimum of
training, and could be a lot of fun. Please respond either to me
individually or the whole group if you're interested, and specify
which distance and type of team.

Entry fees are $275 for the full vineman team (or $91.67 per
person) and $175 for the half vineman team ($58.33 per person).

The link to the website for the relay is below.

I would be interested in doing the Half Vineman relay- the running leg!
I am starting my competitive training for Marine Corps Marathon this fall and
the distance training would be great.
I am willing to be on a competitive or non-competitive team. Just to go and
participate would be ideal.

Otherwise- I could use the help in training to try for completion of Barb's Half
Ironman.

M2T2,

I'm interested in buying a used bike. I don't have a lot of cycling experience
with, so something reliable and easy to maintain would be good. Does anyone
have information about bikes being sold in the area?

Thanks,

Tim

Greetings, all. I would have called this a "weekly" update, as my predecessors
have, but that implies that I'll send one out every week. Since I'm much less
reliable than that, let's just say it's a random update, and I'll send one out
whenever. This also has a nice OR ring to it.

Sure was great to see so many swimming on Friday afternoon (six) and riding
Saturday morning (twelve). If anybody has any feedback, good or bad, on how to
make these better training events, send it my way. I particularly enjoyed
watching Bunyamin change his flat ... twice! Also, check out the related poll in
the "Polls" section of the team site ( http://groups.yahoo.com/group/m2t2/ ).

Good luck to Mike Johannes who is off to do Ironman Lake Placid this weekend in
NY.

If you haven't sent me a member info sheet (see the "M2T2 Roster" folder in the
"Files" section of site), please do so. I'd like to give Sam a team roster this
week so he can distribute it to the local shops.

Don't forget, registration for Tinley's Dirty Adventures (4-6 Oct) opened last
week:
http://www.tricalifornia.com/dirtyseries/2002/

Amy is willing to do the run-leg of the Half Vineman Relay (24 Aug). Anybody
interested in the swim or bike legs?

Locally this week, any interest in:

Wednesday track workout; 1530 at MPC? (I may be doing slow laps)

Friday OWS at 1500? (I'm in)

SMR at 0600, 0630, or 0700? (yep, me again)

"Reply to All" if interested.

If anybody is interested there will be a CVTC sponsored group ride tomorrow
morning (don't these people have real jobs?). They meet at 0930 every Tuesday
at Fisherman's Wharf and typically do 30-40 miles in Fort Ord. Not a blistering
pace and lots of regroups.

Teamwork helps Coeur d'Alene land Ironman
Idaho business groups, Spokane County chip in to secure prestigious
sporting event

Adam Lynn
Staff writer

Thanks to some interstate cooperation, Coeur d'Alene is set to play
host to one of the most grueling athletic events in the world next
year.

Spokane County commissioners voted unanimously Tuesday to spend
$10,000 to help Coeur d'Alene land the 2003 Ironman North America
Championships, a triathlon that attracts some of the continent's best
athletes.

The event is scheduled to take place the third week of June in and
around Coeur d'Alene, said Eric Sawyer of the Spokane Regional Sports
Commission, which worked to recruit the championships.

The $10,000 contributed by Spokane County will be added to $40,000
put up by Coeur d'Alene business groups, including the Coeur d'Alene
Chamber of Commerce and the Hagadone Hospitality Corp., and others to
pay the bid fee necessary to secure the event, Sawyer said.

No contracts have been signed, but Sawyer said Ironman North America
has assured him the event will be in Coeur d'Alene next year. Ironman
North America oversees Ironman competitions in the United States.

"We have been awarded the event," he told commissioners during a
morning meeting. "We just need to secure the $50,000 to pay the bid
fee."

Teri Runge, who works for Sawyer at the sports commission, said in an
interview later in the day that her boss overstated the case.

"There are several, several hoops to be jumped through before it's a
done deal," said Runge, who has worked directly with Ironman North
America to try to secure the event. "They want to come to Coeur
d'Alene, but it's not a done deal yet."

Spokane County Commissioner Phil Harris said the Ironman is one of
the world's premier sporting events and that landing it would be a
plum for the region.

Ironman competitors swim 2 miles, bike 112 miles and run a marathon,
all in less than 17 hours.

Winners of the North America Championships -- one of 15 sanctioned
Ironman events worldwide -- qualify for the Ironman World
Championships held each year in

Hawaii.

"It's really some kind of competition. It's big time," Harris
said. "I can't float 2 miles, mush less swim 2 miles."

Landing the event would send economic ripples across the Inland
Northwest, local tourism officials said.

The event is expected to draw 3,000 to 6,000 people to the area,
including the nearly 1,800 participants.

Those folks are expected to spend money in local hotels, restaurants,
shops and car rental agencies, said John Brewer, president of the
Spokane Regional Convention and Visitors Bureau.

Most of that spending would take place in Kootenai County, but the
impact is expected to be felt in Spokane County as well, especially
in Liberty Lake and the Valley, Brewer said.

"Attracting this affluent market could mean up to a $7 million
economic impact for the region: a significant return on a $10,000
investment," he wrote in a letter to Spokane County commissioners.

Eldonna Gossett, president and chief executive officer for the
Spokane Valley Chamber of Commerce, said there would be other
benefits as well, including national television exposure. ESPN often
televises the event.

Sawyer said his group hopes to win a contract that will bring the
Ironman competition to Coeur d'Alene for the next five years.

Hey Team,

Since I have not had a chance to see all of you, but have been asked by a number
of you how the adventure to Estonia went, I wanted to share some of the good,
the bad and the ugly experiences I had.

The Good - Overall, I will always say that this is a once in a lifetime
opportunity that I am honored to be a part of. As a military officer, it is a
very unique way to represent our Armed Forces. We get the opportunity to share
in other countries cultures and meet so many diverse people from around the
world. If nothing else, the trip was worth it for that reason. One of the
highlights of this year's event was the return of the Chinese team to the event.
They showed up with a lot of young faces, many cameras (typical of what we all
would expect - they are very snap happy, especially for Americans in white
uniforms!!!), and a huge interest in what our officers do for work. I have a
feeling the only thing their athletes do is train, as it is with many of the
other countries who bring athletes to CISM events. They seemed very surprised
to hear the real jobs of our team members. I also had the opportunity to talk
for about for hours with a young Seargent from Luxembourg who was doing his
first triathlon, had only swum 3 times since January, and was very happy to
place last in the competition for the men. It gave me a good chance to brush up
on my French, although I was horribly drained afterwords because the vocabulary
has been placed somewhere in the depths of my mind.

The bad - I had six plane flights just to reach the country of Estonia followed
by a three hour van ride to the site - all enough to thoroughly exhaust me -
lesson learned = don't let Navy Sports plan your itinerary!! My bags - bike and
all clothing - did not arrive with me and did not get to me until Thursday (we
left Monday). I will plan to take more than just school related material in my
carry on next time!

The ugly - Estonia is a relatively growing, yet still a bit poor country. The
roads are not all that well kept - which we were warned about in advance. The
course was hilly, although not as bad as Wildflower. I did not take any pump or
patch kit as I usually don't for a race of this length. The last time I tried
to travel with my CO2 cartridges, the airlines to them away anyhow, so I did not
have any means to pump tires. Anyway, sad to say, I swam OK and flatted on mile
20 of the bike only to have to face an hour and 15 minute walk back to
transition. By time I got there, the race was complete and athletes were
clearing transition. So, I put my shoes on and joined the rest of my team
cleaning up our stuff. Not exactly what I would have envisioned going into this
trip, but we all have a bad race and I hope this was mine for the year. The
women's team did end up 3rd overall and we finished out with a tour of Tallin -
the wonderful capital city of Estonia. They call it the Medieval Capital and
the history is quite interesting for all who care to read about it.

I wish you all the best for a strong finish to the season. Thanks for asking
about my trip and I hope this short recap helps to motivate you to always try to
improve yourself!

Howdy folks. We're thinking about having some training "classes" similar to the
bike class that Sam gave at the team meeting. The informal classes would be
oriented toward beginners and taught by some of the more experienced team
members, several of whom have already volunteered. If there is enough interest,
we may have one or two of these type classes between team meetings. If you are
interested or have questions, please let me know. I'm looking for some feedback
on specific topics, good meeting times/locations, etc. Some topics may become
our normal monthly training topic, some may become "on-line" classes.

This list has only last names and first initials and will be removed from the
web this weekend.

The official roster consists of those folks who are local and eligible to be on
the team, as opposed to folks who have moved away or are local "friends of the
team". This is the roster we provide (name only) to local bike shops and such so
you can receive the team discount. I believe we also provide it to MWR. I add
folks to the official roster when they submit their Member Information sheet
(same link as above). If you're not on the list, that means you haven't given me
your info yet. If you are having problems getting your info to me, please send
me an email. I plan on giving the roster to Sam tomorrow so he can distribute
it.

Hey Team,

By coincidnece I met up with this guy, Ryan Correy, on the bike path in
Marina on Sat. He is on his final leg of an 8000+ mile journey from Calgary,
down the East Coast, across the southern states to CA, then back up to
Calgary. He looked very ordinary..had a pack on..that's about it. Guess he
was getting low on funds and parted with his chase vehicle (and all the
media) in LA and is now finishing the trip solo. Great story!..check out his
site at www.ryansdream.com.
