We'll have today's open water swim before (not after) the club
meeting, and at Wharf #2 (not Lover's Point). Plan for a 1545 launch,
up to 40 minutes in the water, and then head back to NPS for a shower
and meeting.

I have the last half of my flight physical today at 1500 (over at
DLI), and it shouldn't take too long. The same doctor who first
treated me with my broken arm is the same one doing the exam. I'll
try to make it to the wharf right afterwards.

Howdy!

The Yahoo! groups message system has not been working out as
expected. The problem remains that messages posted there are not
being forwarded to club members @nps.navy.mil e-mail addresses. I've
heard a couple of other side problems as well. But anyways...

For everyone's knowledge, the next triathlon club meeting is
TOMORROW, July 11. We'll meet at the normal place (NPS - Glasgow Hall
Rm. 122) at the normal time (1700 hours local). The rough agenda is
going to be something like this...

Craig is going to sit back and lend his usual moral support.

Duke is going to talk about the Poker ride and other training events
for the next quarter.

Heidi is going to talk about another DeSoto order...and maybe some of
her adventures at Ironman California.

Lynn is going to talk about the NPS Biathlon...and maybe some of her
adventures in Slovenia (2:09!!! Ask her about her new bike!).

Dan is going to talk about electing a new club president...and maybe
some of his adventures in San Jose and the Half-Vineman (I won
another bottle of wine...is 1999 LaCrema Chardonnay any good?)

Open water swim to follow the meeting...or before (Todd, Ben and
myself seem to be a critical mass for a pre-meeting swim off wharf 2)

Hi Team!
I did the Aquathlon today--an amazing experience! Swimming Alcatraz has been
on my dream race list for many years. My first impression of the race was
that it was quite close to an army airborne operation: all the prerace stuff
from "If you miss manifest call, you ain't jumpin," to the in-flight,
prejump nervousness, to the word "GO!" If you're not a "leg" (as we airborne
snobs call ground troops) you'll understand:-)

The water was a lot choppier than I was trained for, of course, though I
think the waves were only 1-2 ft high, and the veterans were saying the
water was relatively calm. I sucked down A LOT of water. I had my usual
trouble navigating, acerbated by a thin fog on land that hid the most
prominent landmarks. Every time I lifted my head to sight, I took in another
mouthful of water. But aside from that, I had a good time out there. I
wasn't racing like Wildflower, so I took a good look around and snatched a
couple glimpses of the island.

Strange to say it, but I was more refreshed coming out of the water (about
65 minutes) than I was after the 1250 at San Jose, where I was really
cranking. The run was a scenic course across the Golden Gate Bridge, nice
view of the island. All in all, it was a good confidence boost and warm-up
for the Envirosports Alcatraz Tri in August. I owe a lot to Coach Ken, and I
want to thank you guys for your encouragement and motivation (Thanks Lynn:-)

By the way, I recommend the Catfish swim this coming weekend. It's put on by
J&A, the SJIT people. It's relatively cheap and the post race food is
legendary!

Hello All,
First of all I am hooked. SJIT was an awesome experience. This was my
first triathlon. Hopefully the first of many.
Second, I completed it seven minutes faster than I'd expected. Great
course for beginners. I need to work on the swim. Lots of support from
other teammates. I think there were seven or eight present.
Finally, hope your break was relaxing. See you on the 11th.

Thanks-

I got my packet today. The water was WAY warm. I'll look for Tom (he's
hard to miss) at the finish. I'll be hanging around a while to enjoy
the day with my family at the beach there (if not too crowded). Good
luck all.

Amy,
It's a new group, so I guess that we are all new to it, too.
Anyhow, welcome aboard.

My recommendation for meeting after the race is right at the
finish line. The finish line is right inside the central area where
the post-race food and the expo are. There should be a big air-filled
arch at the finish line, and that seems to be the best landmark.

That's just a suggestion. I'm sure that some folks may have
already made post-race plans to either stay around or leave quickly.
I'll probably stay around a little, but long enough to eat a honking-
hung Una Mas burrito and a cold brew. Maybe I'll stay for a while and
watch the end of the pro race.

I think the other M2T2 participants are (forgive me if I leave
someone out) Duke, Norm, Dave Hurley, Tom, and Len. I mentioned to
some that I'll be spending the full weekend in San Jose. So, if you
want to reach me, my cell phone will be on at (831) 238-2427. I'm
staying at the Studio Plus suites off of Bernal Rd (anyone is welcome
to crash on the sofa bed). I could also pick up anyone's packet if
they need me to do so.

Inaugural Ironman Utah to be held on Saturday, June 8, 2002

PROVO, Utah-Ironman North America, the city of Provo and the Utah
County Convention and Visitors Bureau are pleased to announce the
addition of an Ironman event in Provo, Utah to take place on
Saturday, June 8, 2002. Provo will play host to Ironman Utah for the
next five years.

With the announcement, Ironman Utah becomes the western most Ironman
event in the continental United States.

"We are very excited to be coming to Provo," said Ironman North
America President Graham Fraser. "They have made a commitment to our
event for five years and the natural beauty of the area and the
community spirit make for a perfect fit with Ironman."

Provo was chosen following an intensive selection process, which
included sites in Texas, the city of Oceanside, Calif. and Provo.

"Provo made a five-year commitment to host our western U.S. event,"
said Fraser. "While Ironman California was an impressive event, we
couldnąt get a guaranteed long-term commitment from the site there.
We need stability to build the event, and Provo will provide that."

Provo becomes one of only four sites in the continental United States
to play host to an Ironman event, joining Lake Placid, N.Y. (Ironman
USA Lake Placid), Panama City, Fla. (Ironman Florida) and Madison,
Wisc. (Ironman Wisconsin). The addition of Provo provides an Ironman
event in four different regions (Northeast, Southeast, Midwest, West)
of the United States.

"It was important to us to provide a great host site for our
athletes, but also to provide a race that was easily accessible for
our western athletes," said Fraser. "Combine that with the beauty of
the Utah County area, a proven track record of hosting events, and
their willingness to launch a new event in the Olympic year showed
their commitment to the event."

While course routes are being finalized, officials say the swim will
take place in Utah Lake and the transition, expo, Athlete Village and
Finish line will all be located at the Brigham Young University
Athletic Field on campus. Brigham Young University plays host to 32,
000 college students.

The Carbo and Awards Banquet will be hosted by Utah Valley State
College at the McKay Events Center.

Utah County officials are quite pleased to add an Ironman event.

"Ironman brings with it not only a significant economic impact but
the kind of community spirit all communities are working toward,"
said Gary Herbert, Chairman of the Utah County Board of
Commissioners. "We have had many groups and organizations working to
bring this event to our community. Our staff has put forth a
tremendous effort but without the volunteer participation and
cooperation from community leaders, businesses, and the schools of
higher learning we could not have been able to attract this event. A
community could not be more excited or its people more anxious to
host this event than we are."

There will be 80 qualifying spots up for grabs at the inaugural
Ironman Utah event for the 2002 Ironman World Championship being held
in October in Kona, Hawaii.

Registration for the inaugural event is now open. Log onto
www.ironmanutah.com to register for the event.

Ironman North America are the owners and organizers of the only
sanctioned Ironman-distance events in continental North America. For
more information on this release, or on Ironman North America,

-----------------------------------
It's IM Utah!

June 21, 2001, Provo, Utah (www.triathlonlive.com):

It was just a matter of time. Literally. Citing the fact that it was
almost July and there was still no deal with Oceanside, Ironman North
America officials have pulled the plug on California, and pulled the
trigger on an alternative site.

Time now being of the essence, Shane Facteau, communications director
for the Ironman Triathlon, will announce today in Provo that IM Utah
is replacing IM California for 2002. The race will be held June 8th.

Race organizers and Utah County will sign a five-year contract for
Provo to host to the event. A long-term, ironclad deal was another of
the key considerations for Ironman North America. Oceanside and Camp
Pendleton, where IM California's bike ride would be staged, were said
to be offering 5-year deals, but with escape language that was
uncomfortable for Ironman North America.

The third issue was money, but this only to a lesser degree. Utah was
rumored to be offering two-and-a-half times the $100,000 in city
services abatements that Oceanside had on the table. This is of
little import, though, until race organizers know what the bill for
the services will be. Organizers were facing the inability, at this
late date, to determine just what a race inside the city of Oceanside
was going to cost.

This does not mean that IM California is dead––just that it's dead
for 2002. While Ironman North America says that Utah is in and
California is out for next year, it is careful not to close the door
on Oceanside. It's president, Graham Fraser (celebrating his 40th
birthday today), has stated that "we may have as many as six races in
North America" before his company considers this continent closed
out. It has five now.

Oceanside will remain a coveted choice for the next and final event,
should Fraser decide to install another North American Ironman race.
Such race could be held as early as 2003.

There is a more likely option. As of only this morning, when
Oceanside officials learned that Utah got the Iron-nod, the subject
was broached of a half-Ironman replacing the full in Oceanside, with
Fraser's existing organization putting on the event. "We have the
infrastructure," Fraser said, "We have the volunteers, and permission
to use the base. It would be a shame to see all that go away.
Obviously this is very preliminary, but as of this morning Oceanside
is willing to consider turning the race into a half."

The two options would be to leave the half at that distance over the
long-term, or to abandon the half and go back to the full when both
Oceanside and Ironman North America have time to ease into their
relationship. In either case Fraser is eager to leverage his ability
to put on an Ironman quality race over the half-Ironman distance.

Hey all-

Since I'm new to the group, and know only a few of the members, I was
wondering if there will be any type of team gathering in conjunction
with SJIT. If there was a convenient landmark- perhaps we could meet
after the race. I don't want to cramp anyone's style- so if it's not
easy to do, I'll just look for Tom to compare notes (like usual!)

There have been some problems with this e-group. Some folks are not
getting e-mails of the messages that are posted to the group.

The problem, as best as I can tell, is that it is a problem with NPS
and not Yahoo!. If you have your e-mail from the group sent to an NPS
e-mail address, the NPS system seems to be bouncing back the message.
Apparently, it doesn't like 'one-list' style messages. (Which is
probably a reason why you don't see any SPAM on your work e-mails.)
If you have your e-group messages sent to another e-mail system other
than NPS, you get the messages O.K.

I'll send a message to Debbie about this, and see if it is fixable.

There is no large parking area next to the transition area. What
little parking there is next to the race venue is used by the race
organization. The adjacent streets are all part of the bike course,
so you can't park there either.

If you get to SJIT early enough, there is a large parking area at the
Almaden Light Rail station. It is a long three blocks away from the
transition area (2/3 mile walk). It would be a tight squeeze for a
camper (the driveways around the parking lot are narrow), but it
could fit. Don't know if VTA allows for overnight parking there, but
the light rail trains run 24 hours a day, so that is probably not an
issue.

If you can't park at Almaden station, there is street parking or you
can do the SJIT-organizer's recommended thing and park at Ohlone
Light Rail Station and take the train (with bike & gear) to Almaden.

Wetsuits: Bring it and wear it. I did SJIT in '99 without one, and
was probably one of only two who didn't in my wave. The water temp is
O.K. to go it naked, but I felt that I was at a clear disadvantage.
The only time that going sans-wetsuit helped was that it allowed me
to run along the opposite beach faster. But that's it. The swim
course is narrow with many turns, so there will be unavoidable
contact, whether you wear body armor or not, and whether you start at
the front/rear/left/right. Wearing a wetsuit won't really afford you
much protection in the area where you need it the most (Your face and
arms).

Hey team, I'm wondering how many of you are wearing wet suits for this one.
I think the water is warm enough to go without, but is there any real time
advantage that won't be lost in the transition zone? Also, this is probably
going to be my first time swimming in the fray--I want to line up back
middle of the pack, as opposed to my usual "way back and on the side." Does
the wetsuit provide any real body armor against kicks and punches?

Hello Team!

Some additional comments.
First, whenever you plan a trip, do it with Dan, Craig and Derek. They
organize very, very well and know all the places to go. I did not do
anything for this trip and nevertheless ended up in inexpensive rooms and
good restaurants. Thanks for that, guys!
The competition was hard and the day before I was really scared, because
everybody seemed to be real fast. On race day that changed, I had wonderful
race (as soon as I got out of the water, but that is nothing new for me) and
enjoyed every minute of it. It is really great to have the possibility to
work with the US Armed Forces.
Summary: Whoever has the chance to do it next time; just do it!

P.S. don't forget to stop in San Luis Obispo on the way down.

O.K. by popular request from Heidi, here's my
one-sided, self-centered version about what happened
during the AFT. It is attached on the MS Word file.

It will be permanently at Pt. Mugu, so be thinking
about it next year, wherever you may be. It is a great
time and a fast course and a chance to meet fellow
military triathletes.

Friends, we had a terrific trip down to Pt. Mugu for the Armed Forces
Triathlon. Mention anything like Cal Poly co-eds, crayons, Angelina
Jolie, parking lot fender benders and smooth jazz music, and you will
surely get a story out of the gang that went.

Actually, the journey isn't quite yet done for our one official
member of the All-Navy team. Lynn snarfed up THE LAST SLOT to
Slovenia and the World Military Triathlon Championship! Her sixth-
place finish earned her the right to go. The World Championship is
during the first week of July. Way to Go!

The biggest thanks has to go to Duke, who basically did 95% of the
work to get us into the race, on the teams and into lodging at Pt.
Mugu. Unfortunately, his ankle injury turned into a full-leg injury
by the end of the race. His time was still respectfully under 2:25,
but even his dreams of Angelina waiting at the finish line to provide
a sensual massage were not enough to offset the searing pain.

Craig did the other 5% of the work by supplying the transportation.
Thanks to Public Works, we had free gas and free use of a van to
dirty up and smash around. Craig PBed the Olympic Distance, as did
Tom and myself.

The best news is that Pt. Mugu will become the permanent site of the
Armed Forces Championship every year. I think that we did well enough
to help convince the race director to allow us (and other military
tri teams like Pendleton's) to have some open race slots in future
years.

More details to follow...

Duke,

Count me in as a volunteer!

To everyone else:

The Poker Ride is a lot of fun. I hope to see most you you out there. I
rode it last year (probably one of the most challenging rides I had done up
to that point) but this year I will just cheer for everyone else.

I made a few administrative changes to the settings on the M2T2 e-
group. (I'm still learning some of this stuff.)

The biggest change is that the Archives and Files are now public,
which means that you can access them directly by going to the e-group
website (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/m2t2) without having to log-in
through a Yahoo! account.

Archives has all of the group messages archived.

Files currently has old race results, the articles that have appeared
in Campus News, and some of the minutes from previous meetings.

Also, the Calendar feature is active. I have started putting some of
our club events, along with races, on the calendar.

If you have any questions or problems with the e-group/e-mail
service, let me know.

Finally, stay tuned for the first M2T2 Poll of the Week!

Good race.

Swim was 1.5 miles, choppy (1-2 ft), going west to east with
North/South currents. It was easier (to me, at least) than swimming
back to the pier in Monterey Bay (the return leg), but took extra
attention to swimming a decent line. The whole atmosphere getting
out there was like going up on a plane to jump out of it, and the
leap from the boat while we were adjacent to Alcatraz completed the
experience. Beautiful views, and no sharks.

18 mile bike started out ~1st mile flat, then hit the hills of
Golden Gate National Recreation Area. Up to the peak, where the
bridge outlook spot is, then down the south side to a loop in the
lower extension of GG park. Reached 40 mph coasting down the big
hill (didn't have a gear big enough to pedal). Back up that hill was
a @#$%@#$, and was very thankful to have 39 tooth chainring on my
bike. The rest was down the hills we climbed for the first 4-5
miles, and really nice. Rumor had it Robin Williams was out on the
course to say hi.

Run went 1 mile flat, 2 miles up south access to GG Park (Bridge
view section again), 1 mile down to beach, 1 mile up from beach (Sand
Ladder from nude beach - that part was a real treat), 2 miles back
down the original climb and 1 mile flat. Lots of hills all day, and
I got to feeling like a mountain goat after a while.

Overall, I was thrilled to complete my first tri. Eric McKinnis
came in 3:22, better than his last year time by a chunk (forgot how
much). As for me, first effort was 2:53 with paces throughout better
than expected. Saw the Duke out there cheering us on - thanks for
coming. It was great to see you.

That's all. Hope that answers the questions.

      Peace, Jim Juster

2 days after Alcatraz, and 5 miles was sore today. Still fun, not
too fast, but certainly not up to normal good feeling. Race was a
trip, though, and well worth it. Hammer on... Jim.

What: 50 mile bicycle ride (casual and very fun...maybe some hills)
When: 28 July (Saturday)

This is an excellent opportunity to raise some M2T2 money for T-shirts
and/or social activities. What I need is 10 volunteers to work the aid
stations and other team members to ride the event and support M2T2 team
spirit.

I need to fill the volunteer slots first. There will be two people per aid
station, and the event shouldn't last longer than 4-5 hours. There is a
raffle and a chicken BBQ feast afterward that is free to all volunteers.
When I say feast, I mean "FEAST"!

Please R.S.V.P. me if you are interested in volunteering!!!!!

The cost of the ride will be $20 for pre registration and $25 on ride day.
There will be flyers around soon, and wearing your M2T2 uniform for both
volunteering and riding is encouraged.

Please email me if you have any questions. Spread the word around campus if
you know anyone who rides.

NEW CLUB E-MAIL SYSTEM
Please send your club e-mails to m2t2@yahoogroups.com, instead of the
old process of "replying to all" off of an old e-mail. I have set up
an e-group (similar to the old "one-list" that CVTC uses) to help
send out messages.

There are advantages and disadvantages to this. The big advantage is
that you help build (and keep current) the membership list by being a
member of the e-group. You can choose to receive your messages one-by-
one, or in a daily digest. New club members can join the e-group on
their own or the club officers (who are also e-group moderators) can
add them to the list. Old messages will be archived. Attachments to
messages will continue to be allowed. Later, I shall add the training
calendar to the e-group files, so that our non-NPS members can access
it.

By virtue of receiving this message, you are already registered
within the e-group. The e-group's web page is
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/m2t2

RECAP FROM LAST WEEKEND
It has been officially reported that numerous menaces to society
Escaped From Alcatraz two days ago. Among the more notorious
individuals who allegedly terrorized the Streets of San Francisco
were Erik McInnis (3h22m52s) and Jim Juster (2h53m00s). Authorities
request that you approach these two with extreme caution and offer
them your congratulations.

I will modestly state that I won the overall at the Berryessa
Biathlon, but will concede that I had to win it on the strength of
the bike ride and not the swim.

LOVER'S POINT KELP FESTIVAL CONTINUES
The Wednesday late-afternoon (1730) explorations of the kelp beds off
of Lover's Point continues tomorrow. Wetsuits recommended.

NEW SWIMMING POOL WORKOUTS
Starting next Monday (June 18), the Seaside Aquatics team will have
their A-group workouts on weekday afternoons from 1300-1600 at the
outdoor pool at Seaside High School. The A-group also will have
workouts on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1900-2030 (followed by water
polo from 2030-2230) at the indoor Pattullo Pool in Seaside. The
Masters swimmers are welcome to the A-group workouts. The schedule
for the morning workouts at both Pattullo and Carmel High remain
unchanged.

NEXT WEEKEND'S EVENTS
I'm a firm believer of taking the week before finals off from
athletic competition. However, if you MUST yank yourself away from
the books for a few moments this weekend, AND you're not going to Pt.
Mugu for the Armed Forces Triathlon Championship, the Saturday
Morning Rejects will meet as usual for a bike ride at 0730-0930
starting at the Del Monte Gate parking lot.

POKER RIDE

The CVTC/VCM/M2T2 Poker Bike Ride will be on Saturday, July 28. Duke
will have forthcoming information about participating (volunteering
or riding - both are needed from us). Keep this date free on your
calendar.

NEXT CLUB MEETING

There will be NO JUNE MEETING. Best wishes on your finals and enjoy
your summer break.

Consequently, July's meeting will be moved forward one week to July
11. For the NPS students, this is the first Wednesday of the new
quarter. The August meeting will occur as usual on August 15. See you
at Glasgow Hall, room 122 at 1700.
