My son and I signed up at the last minute for the Tri class at Sports center. It was 174 each but the teacher Terri is really good. This was the first week and there is also an informal Tri Sat morning starting at 0830 at Lovers point that is covering the PG sprint course.

The POC for the informal Sprint is LCDR Spencer Baker... he is part of the business school and has sent out the attached flyer. Hope this helps!
Also, some were asking about swimming... the Monterey Sports Center has a really nice pool and pretty reliable hours. Its $45 per month to use the entire facility and cheaper for just the pool (minus group exercises). Plus, if you do family memebership it is even cheaper. Just some good fyi...

Pacific Grove High has an adult league that starts back up at the end of August. It's cheap ($25 for an 8 week session). Basically an open lap swim from 1700 - 1900 M, W and 0800-1100 Sat. Just show up to one of the nights and you can sign up. Pretty low key. 25 yd pool.

Hey all, I'm new to the club, and new to tris. I've run 6 full
marathons, and I'm in fairly decent shape right now.
I would like to run the PG Olympic Distance Triathlon on Sept 13. Is
there an experienced triathlete that can recommend a training plan for
me?

By popular demand, tomorrow's ride has been pushed back to 0800. Meet @ the same S in the coastal trail near Border's between 0745-0800 for a start @ 0800. Plan is to ride from start to Pebble Beach Club House and back. Route is subject to change depending on riders' goals in the morning. Hope to see you there.
This is an invitation for all those interested in joining a group ride/workout for Friday mornings. Intended start time is 0730 (may be subject to change depending on interest). Plan for this week's ride is 1 or 2 X 8 mile head-race / time-trial style ride. The plan is for everyone to meet at the S in the Coastal Trail near Borders at 0715 warmed-up or near warmed-up. We'll migrate shortly after that north to the new railroad crossing to start the first piece at 0730. Depending on the group size and ability we'll stagger ourselves every 30 - 45 seconds. The finish times of our first piece will seed us for the second, at least for those looking for more of a workout.
Take a look at the intended ride at www.mapmytri.com. Search for "M2T2 TT#1". Hope to see you there. If you can't make it, but am looking for a group ride at another time during the week, just shoot an e-mail to the group. I am looking, and have a pretty flexible day-time schedule for the next few months.
Having graduated, please remove me from the distro. Thanks!

Gentlemen,
Please see the two e-mails I've cut and pasted below. These e-mails were sent
late last month to several NPS individuals who expressed interest in joining an
NPS Bike Team to raise money to fight Multiple Sclerosis by participating in the
MS 150 "Waves to Wine" ride in September. I am forwarding these e-mails to you
because you have either expressed interest in joining the team or someone else
informed me you might be interested.
NPS has, in fact, formed a team to participate in this event. If you are
interested in joining it, please follow the directions in the e-mail immediately
below. Right now we have 6 members on the team.
We will have our first team ride this Thursday, 17 July, a ~15 mile warm-up.
You are welcome to join us. We will meet at the bike path across from the Del
Monte Ave Gate (where the homeless congregate) at 1530. We will conclude our
ride with refreshments somewhere along Cannery Row or in downtown Monterey. A
1530 start time will enable all of us to be home in time for dinner with our
families.
Please contact me with any questions. And please let me know of anyone else who
might be interested.
Thank you.

If this link isn't working, please do the following:
* Go to the MS 150 Waves to Wine Home Page
* Click on "Enter Site"
* Click on "Join a team"
* Type in "Naval Postgraduate School" in the "Team Name" block, then click on
"Search for a Team"
* Click on the NPS link that appears below the search block
* Click on "Join Naval Postgraduate School" link and follow the directions.
Please note:
* The current registration fee is $25. As of 29 June the registration fee goes
up to $40-SO REGISTER SOON!
* Each rider for this event must raise at least $350 in pledges to participate.
Both times I participated in the past I was easily able to get over $1000 in
pledges, so I am confident everyone can achieve the minimum of $350. In my
experience most people will gladly contribute at least $20 for you to cover the
distance. According to the web site, pledges must be turned in no later than 15
October. In my experience I have always turned the money in the first day of
the event (before the ride begins) if not earlier.
I have researched the possibility of getting jerseys for the team. I have found
a good vendor (VOmax) which also happens to be the preferred apparel supplier
for this event. In order to get semi-custom jerseys (meaning an NPS logo is
superimposed on one of 29 existing templates) we must place an order for at
least 10 jerseys. So please spread the word and help us get at least a team of
10 members put together! [Fully customized jerseys require an order of at least
25.]
We have 81 days to train and raise money! I'll follow up soon with all
committed team members to discuss and arrange our first team training ride.
THANKS!

Ladies and Gentlemen,
You have received this e-mail because, at one time or another, you expressed
interest in prospectively participating as an NPS Bike Team member to raise
money to fight Multiple Sclerosis (MS).
The Northern California Chapter of the National MS Society organizes and
executes an annual fundraising event, the MS 150 "Waves to Wine" bike ride. MS
150 events take place across the country. Most cyclists who participate in
these events ride a total of 150 miles over a two-day period, i.e. 75 miles each
day (though other mileage options, both shorter and longer, are available).
Please use the following web address to learn more about the event:

I am volunteering to serve as captain of an NPS Bike Team for this event. We
must have a minimum of 4 participants to form a team. If I receive three other
commitments I will register an NPS team via the MS 150 event web site and invite
you to join it. PLEASE NOTE: If you wish to join the team, please inform me but
DO NOT try to register as an individual or look for an NPS Bike Team on the MS
150 web site (there isn't one yet) until I inform you to do so. If you register
as an individual and then try to join the team you may encounter some
difficulties (which I have already experienced, and am in the process of
resolving).
I've participated in 2 MS 150 events in Florida. They are great fun. The MS
150 is NOT a race (although you can cover the distance as fast as you like if
you are so inclined).
This year's event is scheduled for 13-14 September. Day 1 starts in San
Francisco, goes over the Golden Gate bridge, and stops overnight at Sonoma
Mountain Village. Day 2 takes riders through South Marin County, the Russian
River Valley, and finishes at Lake Sonoma (see the web site for more details).
As of today we have 82 days to train for the event (plenty of time), but if we
want to form a team and get custom jerseys, we should do so soon. Because this
is an opportunity to promote NPS, I will contact the NPS Foundation to see if it
is possible for the Foundation to fund or help subsidize team jerseys.
I've seen all skill levels participate in this event, so you only need to be a
cycling enthusiast (not an expert) to enjoy this event.
If you are interested, please let me know soon. You are welcome to forward this
e-mail to anyone else you know at NPS who might be interested in joining the
team. If you do forward this e-mail, please send it to individuals only--please
DO NOT forward it to any group e-mail addresses.
This is a good cause and will also help promote NPS. I hope you decide to join
the team!
Thanks.

A disciplined organization of reason and experience provides the basis

P Please consider your environmental responsibility before printing this e-mail
I did most of my training with Sharon deMaria Osgood and Alexis
Waddel Smith who run Monterey Bay Multisport (MBM) (http://www.eteamz.com/montereybaymultisport/index.cfm?).
They have several training options that include everything from an “Intro
to Triathlon” class at Monterey Peninsula College (MPC) ($40 per semester),
to training on the MBM team ($600 for the year = $50 a month), to detailed
personalized coaching ($200 a month). Being new to triathlon when I got out to
Monterey, I started with the class at MPC and eventually moved to the
personalized coaching. The coaching was very good as Sharon has a great deal of
coaching experience at the National level, and Alexis is currently a pro
triathlete. Additionally, the team camaraderie is quite strong with a range of
athletic ability from beginner to elite that means you will have someone about
your speed to push you.
As for bike groups, I occasionally rode with the Velo Club
Monterey (http://www.vcmonterey.org/)
who have a variety of rides throughout the week. Again, this is a very amicable
group with a range of abilities to which their rides are tailored.
There is another bike group in the area with whom I have not
ridden called the Monterey Bay Racing Team (http://www.montereybayracingteam.com/),
who are very active and competitive.
For swimming, there are three options I know of. First is the
indoor heated pool at Monterey Sports Center (http://www.monterey.org/sportscenter/).
At $6 for daily admission, it is the most expensive option, but it is the
nicest facility with the best hours. They also have month, 6 month, and year
memberships that include use of their extensive weight and cardio equipment.
Next is the pool at California State University Monterey Bay
(CSUMB) (http://sports.csumb.edu/site/Documents/airs/pool_brochure.pdf).
Admission is $2 per day for active military and monthly, 6 month, and annual
memberships are available. The pool is outdoors and heated, but has very
limited hours of operation.
The third option is the pool at MPC. This pool is not open to
the public, but you can sign up for a swim class at MPC to use it (Classes at
MPC cost $20.00 per unit).
For open-water swimming, there is a group that swims at 6pm next
to the wharf every Friday. At some point (probably soon) they shift the swim to
Lover’s Point. Again, very cool group, most are triathletes.
I can’t speak for running clubs from personal experience,
though a google search yielded the “Wednesday Night Laundry
Runners” (http://wnlr.org/) who appear to
have many scheduled group runs listed on their webpage here on the Monterey
Peninsula. Perhaps some of the other M2T2 guys can speak to that.
As for races, the biggest name in triathlon around here is
TriCalifornia (http://www.tricalifornia.com/).
They put on very well-organized events, though you will be paying a little
extra for it. Additionally, there is a company called Total Body Fitness (http://www.totalbodyfitness.com/)
who organize many triathlons in the San Francisco/ Sacramento area. Another
useful link is the Northern California Triathlon Calendar (http://www.changeofpace.com/ncalifornia_triathlon_calendar.htm)
that lists many of the events going on in the area. A website called Trifind
also lists triathlon and multisport events in the entire state of California (http://www.trifind.com/ca.html).
Also, www.TheSchedule.com tracks a
variety of athletic events by state, month, and type of event. Finally, if you
feel like running a half down in San Diego, I highly recommend the SuperFrog
triathlon (or the Olympic-distance SuperSeal) that Naval Special Warfare puts
on every year in Coronado (http://www.superfrogtriathlon.com/index.html).
That’s about everything I can think of. I’m sure
there is more stuff out there, but this is what I’ve been able to find in
my year here so far. I’ll be headed to Pensacola at the end of the month,
but I am more than willing to answer any questions you have.

preparation for Escape from Alcatraz. They
meeting and swim at 6:00 PM. They swim down to the first set of condos or so
and turn back. It is about a mile swim.

So, you’re still racing! Alcatraz
may end being your favorite race by the time you’re done (although, it
may not be long enough for your taste). I have done Alcatraz
for the last 2 years, but turned down the slot from PG this year due to
academic stuff.
The run is cool, with trails and paths (and a few other stairs).
The only negative is that it turns to single track for a portion. Both years, I
ended up having to hear the pros jawing about me not giving them the right of
way (waah). The sand ladder is located at about mile 5 or 6 of the 8 mile run.
It goes from baker beach up to a higher trail. You run a portion on the packed
sand, turn away from the ocean into the soft stuff, then hit the ladder.
Dimension-wise, the steps are wide and very deep (typically takes 2 actual
steps to go up one of the ladder steps). There is a cable on the side to hold
on to if you want. Most people don’t waste a lot of energy on the
ladder…they walk a few steps, jump a few, walk some more. Putting your
hands above your knees and pushing helps. Usually takes 1:45-3:30 to get to the
top. I never felt smoked by the ladder. It is actually a break from the hard
miles before and after.
Unless…you want your name in the Alcatraz
record books…there is a competition for the fastest time up the ladder
(hit a mat at the bottom and the top). You could save yourself for the whole
race, bust ass up the sand ladder, then take it in easy…instant fame!
Another bit of advice, look on Google maps...you can
“walk” through the entire bike course. Somebody drove through most
of San Fran with a camera out their window. You can see the terrain pretty well
for the bike portion.

Good to hear from you. I'll camp out in your area of town next weekend.
Thanks for booking a sport early on and making it so much easier for everyone

form with professional discount. Remember to 1) make sure to put M2T2 in
for your team affiliation and 2) limit yourself to two orders per calendar
year. No need to go through me, each person can order separately.
In order to limit the size of the e-mail, I am NOT attaching the accessories
flyer … but I can e-mail that to you personally if you wish. Just write.
Take care and good luck with the training – and racing.

Good to hear from you. I'll camp out in your area of town next weekend. Thanks for booking a sport early on and making it so much easier for everyone to enjoy the Wildflower weekend. Are you going out for the long course again this year? Running in BSIM this weekend too? Thats righteous. Looking forward to the weekend, and best of luck this Sunday.
Cheers,
Jeff

I am taking
my trailer down this week to get a good a camp site at Lake San Antonio for Wildflower.
I will secure additional space for tents and vehicles. The camp spot is
reserved for Sunday through Sunday. I will take the trailer down either this
Thursday or Friday and come back early Saturday to prepare for Big Sur marathon.
I hope we
can have a big turn out like the last seven years of families. Come as long or
short as you like. Usually we have a pot luck pasta, salad and French bread
meal both Friday and Saturday nights.

I hope to

Let me take moment to remind everyone for
the upcoming Tri season to please use the Trical team window on the sign up allocation.
Please select Monterey Military Triathlon Team when signing up for races. This
sends a couple of bucks back to the team at no cost to your entry fee.
I will set up camp again this year the
weekend before at Wildflower for the team. We had a great time last year for
returning veterans and new member to the sport.
I was at LakeSan Antonio
this weekend with the kids and people were actually there practicing for the
race.
