Hey all,

Just a little note from your MWR Officer. I urge those who competed in Pac
Grove to show up at the meeting to fill out their riembursement forms. Yes,
we are getting money from MWR for this one. I have $700 to divide between
all 19 of us. If you cannot make it, please let me know so I can get you a
form.

I also just wanted to add a warm Thank You to all of you who cheered me on
during the end of the race. I really think it inspired me to keep running
(as I really hate that event!). As a little note of inspiration, I was
about 20 lbs heavier and in the worst shape of my life 8 months ago when I
arrived here off deployment. So, the bounds are endless. TRAIN HARD!!

Dan

I want to thank you for your e-mail to the Herald. Coverage from the Herald
is dependent on the number of reporters that they have on duty.
Unfortunately they are mostly at high school sporting games or other
locations. We try to get them all the information they need, but this year
it was difficult with all that was going on. We do give them advanced
notice and I personally contacted the sports editor to see if he was going
to assign a reporter to the event. Race results were posted on the web site
at 5:00 pm on the day of the event and the herald referred people to the web
site. I agree that there are more stories than they report on and I must
say that there were more stories than we know about. We need to do a better
job and we need the help of local like you. We need to make it easy for the
local newspapers to just pick up the information we send them and print it
out without having to do much in-depth research. I must say that in the
past few years we have received great coverage of The Triathlon at Pacific
Grove.

We will do better in the future.

Thanks

Terry

I have never been a person to defend the quality of
the Monterey County Herald, and the coverage of the
Triathlon at Pacific Grove in Sunday's edition didn't
give me any reason to change that.

I sent a message to the Herald and received a kind
reply from the assistant sports editor. Thought you'd
like to see both.

Greetings,
I will relay your comments to Jerry and to sports
editor Joe Wolfcale.
FYI, the organizers of the event didn't provide us
with much advance notice to plan for coverage, telling
us about the triathlon on Monday. That is not an
excuse for errors in reporting, or missing important
information about the event. But as you probably know,
covering a triathlon is a little confusing, with
timing ans such, and if the race organizers are not on
top of it all -- like the Big Sur Marathon folks are,
for example -- our job is extremely difficult.
Thank you for your comments.
Adios

-------------------------------------------

Sunday, September 16, 2001

Dear Editors,

Even under the best of circumstances, I had little
expectation that the Monterey County Herald would
provide full and comprehensive coverage of yesterday’s

Triathlon at Pacific Grove, one of the largest annual
participatory events on the Monterey Peninsula (I
believe it is behind only the Big Sur Marathon in the
number of participants). The article in today’s MCH
written by Mr. Jerry Stewart, however, did not even
meet widely considered standards of adequate or
satisfactory coverage. The article was too focused on
a narrow aspect of the event, contained errors of
fact, and omitted many elements of the day that are of

particular interest to Monterey County readers.

The article had absolutely no coverage of amateur
women participants. Coverage was not given to Pacific
Grove’s Lynn Fodrea, who won the amateur women’s race,

Monterey’s Sheri Deeter (Second place W30-34) and
Elizabeth Caraker (Third place W35-39), Co-Race
Director Betsy Davis of P.G. (Third place W40-44),
Carmel Valley’s Sharon Osgood (Winner of the W45-49
division) and Ramona Bohlander (Winner of the W50-54
division), and Carmel’s Cynthia Lyng (Third place
W45-49).

No coverage was also given to some of the local
amateur men. While the Herald included some locals who

finished as far down as seventh in their age group, it

failed to mention the accomplishment of Greg Perkins
of Salinas (Second in M30-34 and Fourth overall male)
and Monterey’s Ed Nobis (Second place M60-64).

The coverage had a photograph of Monterey’s Derek
Adametz (15th overall) and a reference to him in the
accompanying article. It would be a nice story to note

that he was recently treated for Lymphoma, and that
he’s got three staples still in his chest.

The photo of Adametz also showed an American flag on
the back of his bicycle. Not only did he have that
flag on his bike, but he carried it with him during
the entire 6.2 mile run portion of the race. About 20
other members of the Monterey Military Triathlon Team,

including Fodrea, participated in the triathlon and
carried or displayed American flags with them during
the race.

The opening paragraph of the article said that the
triathlon “…will be remembered for one word –
dominance.” That statement is indicative of the
limited point of view of the event’s coverage. The
event will be remembered by its participants by many
other words besides “dominance”. Energy, emotion, and
spirit are some of the words that come to my mind.

The article stated that the course record was set by
Sheila Taormina last year. She in fact set the record
in 1999. The text of the article sounds confusing here

because of this error (since it refers to winner Becky

Gibbs as the defending champion).

The race almost did not occur. You may have been aware

of the decision by race directors Betsy and Terry
Davis to conduct the event despite the national
tragedy occurring earlier in the week. Part of the
practical problem was that many race volunteers are
students at DLI, and there was a concern that they
would be unable to participate in the event. Not only
did the DLI students get to come to the race and help
conduct it, they helped enhance the energy and spirit
of the day.

Finally, I guess that you could have mentioned
something about myself, another “M2T2” club member,
and the fourth place finisher in M30-34 (with a time
just in front of Adametz’s). I did not race in last
year’s Triathlon at Pacific Grove because I was in the

hospital, being treated for a broken arm sustained in
a bicyclist-auto collision with a motorist on the
triathlon course two days before the race. I guess
that I made a good recovery.

So, I hope that the Herald will see fit to expand
their coverage of this year’s Triathlon at Pacific
Grove before the trail of noteworthy stories goes
cold.

Sincerely,
    Dan Frost
    Seaside

This is a last call for volunteers for Saturday, since we're still a couple
short. If you're racing already, and I didn't delete you from the list of
recipients, please disregard this message.

Here are the details:

	 Time: 7:15 - 10:30 am
	 Date: Saturday, Sept 22
	 Place: Robert Louis Stevenson School
What: Running race support, t-shirt and breakfast (pancakes, I
believe).
We'll be split timers, tag tearers at the finish, aid
station workers.
As I understand it, they've got set up breakdown taken care
of, so we should be free to go at race conclusion.
Races:5K and 10K courses, not the same, unfortunately.

Directions:

Of course you will not have to pay at the gate! Just tell the guards
you are coming here for the race, and pass that message on to your crew. The
easiest thing to do is to come through the Highway 1 gate, bear to the left
down the hill (past the fire station on the immed. left) and continue on
past the golf courses/the Lodge. At every major intersection you'll see a
sign for the school that will say, variably, RL Stevenson School, RLS or
Stevenson School. The school will come up on your left as you head up Forest
Lake Road and away from the Lodge and PB Equestrian Center. You'll see
tents, etc. and it will be fairly obvious that a race is getting going. If
folks want to come from the PG gates that's fine, too. In that case, have
them ask the guard for directions as it varies from gate to gate. (The
guards also have plenty o' maps).

I understand we've all got finals next week, and study time is at a
premium, but please consider volunteering if yuo can. If you're new to the
club, it's a great way to get to know some of your teammates. We'll have a
couple more of these opportunities in the future, and these are how we raise
funds for all the purchases and activities we have planned. Thanks for your
support.

                                  Jim Juster.

Well, I am new to the group and new to the tri club...in fact, this
is the first time I have been to this website...and since I am
talking about firsts, last week was the first time I have gone to one
of your meetings and yesterday at Granite Bay I got to experience my
first Triathlon. What a blast! Darin Kruse was also participating
that day and I owe him a big thanks for all the tips he gave me prior
to the race. I thought I would jot down a few words on the race from
a rookies perspective. They didn't just call this "the year of the
beach" for nothing...it all started with a few email messages from
registration indicating that we might want to bring an extra set of
running shoes to get from the exit of the swim to the transition
area. Boy, they were not kidding. After completing the .75mi swim
we had a 1 mile uphill, on the beach run to get to the transition
point because the water level had receeded so that far. Anyway, the
swim was great, water temperature was perfect without a wetsuit, my
guess is that it was about 75-78 degrees. Although the split times
have not been posted yet, I believe my time was around 19 minutes...I
am happy with that, for now. The transition to bike went well, Darin
and I arrived plenty early and scoped out a great location to
transition to and from the bike...by the way, riding in the
transition area was allowed in this race...the bike trail consisted
of two eight mile loops through the park area on narrow, winding,
rolling hill type of roads...so there were only a couple good
stretches where you could really get going pretty fast...lots of gear
changing and braking, but it was still a fun ride and I averaged
about 19.5 mph, so once again I was happy. Then there was the run.
This was the 5 mile run from hell. In hindsight I wished I had done
some more homework on the layout of the run. It was mostly single
trail through the hills and around the beach area. Still a good run,
but not easy for a guy who has only been running on the pavement
around Monterey. At the three mile point there was a single trail
that went straight up about a 30 degree dirt hill. This hill smoked
me, as well as some others(but not Darin, dont think he even noticed
it), but it didn't last long and once you got to the top it was
downhill for a ways. In the end I think I averaged around 8.5 to 9
minute miles, but it was one of the tougher 5 mile runs I have been
on. Anyone going next year would benefit from running on the trails
on the backside of FT Ord. So in the end I finished my first
triathlon in about 2 hours. Lots of fun and I highly recommend the
race for anyone who wants to do it next year.

Later
James Kennedy

Also, I borrowed my brother-in-laws bike for this race, but would
like to find a good used one...if anyone knows of one for sale.

Hello All,

I need a simple response of what size polo (if you desire a team polo) you
would like. If you were at the last meeting, we voted on a logo for the
polo. The one designed by Frosty's friend won. It is attached if you have
any questions. This logo (in black) will go on the left front breast of a
white polo shirt. There are the really soft (like cotton T-shirt) type
polos or the traditional ones you all may be more familiar with. Please let
me know which kind (soft or regular) and what size (S,M,L,XL) you would
like. The final count will help determine the cost, so please stand by, I
will need to collet money before you can have your shirt.

Thanks a ton. The sooner, the better. FOR TODD, DAVE (HSU) and BRUCE, I
still need you to fill out the PG Tri riembursement forms. I will be gone
for the next four days, but please let me know how I can get them to you
Monday. I presently have no office or desk.

Thanks.

Race Overview: Granite Bay Triathlon in Granite Bay, CA (near Sacramento)

Official Website: http://tbfracing.com/Event_desc/2001GBTRI.htm

Distances:
0.75 mile swim / 16 mi bike / 5 mi run
Good race if you want to do a difficult sprint distance race. It has the
longest swim to bike transition I have ever seen. The run is almost
completely off-road. The race is well run and athletes are well fed. The
course is entirely in the Granite Bay recreation area and is closed to
traffic.

Course:
Swim is in Folsom Lake, water temp ~75 *, wet suits are allowed, but not
needed. Since the swim is in a reservoir and is low at this time of year
(Sept 22), you have to run about a mile (uphill through sand) to the bike
transition area. The bikes are so far away, you need to keep an extra pair
of shoes at the water exit. The bike course winds through the recreation
area and there are several sharp turns. Course is only slightly hilly and
the turns keep you from maintaining any speed but the tight turns make it a
fun ride. You make good use of your gears and brakes. The run course is
very difficult, it is on some very sandy mountain bike trails and at mile 3,
there is a hill called "Korak Attack". "Korak Attack" is very steep hill
and due to the sand it is difficult to maintain traction. It's mostly
downhill or flat for the last part.

Special notes:
The race is also limited to 400 participants so get registered early. There
was a grill-out after the race (if you can eat).

Please congratulate James Kennedy on his first tri!

For those people who like to get a little dirty once and awhile:

Tinley's dirty triathlons are this weekend 5-7 Oct. in San Luis
Obispo. M2T2 has been invited to camp with CVTC at a cost of $10 per
night per person. These triathlon events usually don't sell out so
you can register the day of the race. Go to www.tricalifornia.com to
see all the different events that they offer.

They do have an olympic distance road triathlon for those who are
scared of the dirt.

Email me if you need directions or information.

Hello All from a TBF Half Ironman Survivor,

This week is our monthly meeting on Wednesday, 17 Oct 01, 1700 Glaskow.
Come here from our four HIT survivors as they tell you about the best run
course you could ask for...NOT!! You don't want to miss this.

If you are working out this week in prepartion for the Treasure Island
Triathlon, let us know if you'd like company. One of the agenda items in
Wed's meeting is to come up with the off-season training plan which will
allow us to recuperate from a busy 2001 season, build up our endurance
levels and prepare us for the first event of 2002, Wildflower.

Be safe! Train smart! See you on the road!

Team,

A quick reminder that I will be collecting money for Polo Shirts at the
meeting on Wed. It is about $17.00 +/- a few bucks for tax. I don't have
the final bill yet, but they should be done by the end of the week, so you
can stop by my desk and pick them up.

Thanks.

Team,
At tonight's meeting I will be providing some basic heart rate training
information. Three files are attached for your use. The first is the the
pitch itself and the other two are heart rate data sheets that you can use
to figure out your Lactate (or Anaerobic) Threshold.

See you tonight,
Len

Hello M2T2 :)

My husband and I are relatively new here (Dan just started his EE / Comp Sci
curriculum a few weeks ago). We were heavily involved in triathlon while
living in Tucson, AZ, the last 2+ years. We met Gregory Booth at the info
table at the spouses' brief a couple weeks ago, which is why we're on this
distribution list. As of now, Dan & I are no longer involved in triathlons
(burned out, other involvements, time, and . . . my INJURY - yuck!). In
regards to this injury . . .

Just wondering, since you all are experienced, endurance athletes, if ANY of
you have had experience with a hip / gluteus medius / piriformus injury.
I've been trying to get over this for nearly 11 months now, yes 11. Haven't
been able to run since last December. Can't ride much either, as it stresses
the muscle. It's amazing how much muscle you lose in a year! I'm currently
getting acupuncture, and we'll see if this ultimately helps. I've had MRI's,
x-rays, blood tests, etc... all show that I'm "healthy" (whatever that
means, when you have pain!).

Just hoping one of you might have a hint for me. If not, hello anyway!!!

Blessings and health on your training and season. Athletically-minded, Jenna
Ettlich :)

Hello All,

Just a recap on a few things I touched on yesterday that I said I would get
out an email about.

1. I talked about getting an group order for lights in motion. These are
bike lights for nightime biking, which will be more important when daylight
savings time hits. There are two types, one for the helmet and one for the
handlebars. They range in price based on features. The highest quality
head light is about $200 and the handlebar lights come as a single or set of
two ranging from $125-285. If anyone is interested, I am working on a group
rate (something like a 20% discount) from Bobcat Bikes in Salinas. Please
let me know what you want if you are interested.

2. The M2T2 Team has a portion of the trophy case in the new gym. For
those who would like to donate (not permanently, but just until you leave)
any awards you have earned in an event that you competed as an M2T2 member,
please let me know and I will get them in the case. We have pictures in
there are well. CHECK IT OUT!

3. The polo shirt order was finalized yesterday. The cost per person is
$19.00. I collected money from about a third of you yesterday. You can
either give me cash or a check made to me (Lynn Fodrea) when you come pick
up your shirt. We went with a style that has some khaki and black trim
around the collar and sleves, so there was no choice of soft or regular.
When the shirts are done (probably sometime at the end of next week), I will
get an email out, have a folder on my desk and the shirts by my desk so you
can come pick yours up and pay for it.

4. PG Tri riembursements were finally taken to MWR (after I tracked down
everyone to fill out their form) yesterday. Expect to see your check in the
mail in about 2 weeks. If you don't get it, let me know and I will make it
happen!

5. One last plug for a run put on by MWR: The Turkey Trot is Fri, Nov 16 at
1500 on base. It is $12 for active/reservists/$13 for retires/$14 for DOD
and civilians. They would love to see us out there in our uniforms, so
please think about doing it.

6. The ever postponed duathlon looks like it will be next Feb 9. We would
like all of the M2T2 support we can get, so please mark your calanders.

Thanks and Train Smart! Any questions, please let me know.
Lynn
