All,
This year's Armed Forces Triathlon Championship is on Saturday, June
18 down at Pt. Mugu NAS. M2T2 has had a number of participants in the
past (the race has been at Mugu every year since 2001)...not so much
on any of the official All-service teams, but rather as special
invitees in the open division.
This year's race has a twist in that it will be draft legal.
Typically, those selected for the all-service team get everything
comped and provided for (e.g. transportation/room/board), but they
also spend half the week at Mugu which might conflict with NPS
finals. On the other hand, those invited get a free slot in the race,
maybe a race uniform, and perhaps some travel reimbursement as well
as the usual swag. As well, it's a good way to experience a very
competitive environment and get consideration for selection to the
All-service teams in future years.
The POCs are Kent Blankenship at Mugu (kent.blankenship@...
805-989-7940) and John Hickok at Navy Sports Millington
(P651E@... 901-874-6632). They'll probably make you
submit an application found at http://mwr.navy.mil/mwrprgms/sports.htm
- Frosty
My wife and I will be there, but don't count us in on the food numbers.

Here is the most updated list that I have. If you’re bringing food for
weekend, plan on enough food for 15 on Friday and 12 on Saturday to be safe.
Take a look at who else is bringing the same item and try to split it evenly.
Thanks. See you all down there.

I dropped my trailer off last night at Lake San Antonio. I have
reserved and area in Redondo "B" loop just after the bathroom for
M2T2. Nearly all sewage, electricity and water sites have been taken.
I got the last site on "B" loop. About six were left on "C" loop in
Redondo.
I strang a white cord around the camp area and put up 8 1/2 by 11
signs that say M2T2. The campsite is RB7. I have a brown tent trailer
at the top of the loop. It is a short walk to the bathrooms and the
three way intersection and shuttle to the expo.
The area is quite large for tents that I have saved. We have a picnic
table and a fire place. I drive an old GMC Suburban that is dark blue,
tan and gray primer.

It looks like my wife and I will attempt to camp in the M2T2 area. We don't
need to be counted in for the Pasta dinners. We will be bringing our tent,
chairs, stove, and firewood. We should arrive around 0800 on Friday morning and
stay until Sunday.
We are both doing the Mountain Bike Tri.
See you all there!!

I dropped my trailer off last night at LakeSan Antonio. I have reserved and area in Redondo "B" loop just after the bathroom for M2T2. Nearly all sewage, electricity and water sites have been taken. I got the last site on "B" loop. About six were left on "C" loop in Redondo.
I strang a white cord around the camp area and put up 8 1/2 by 11 signs that say M2T2. The campsite is RB7. I have a brown tent trailer at the top of the loop. It is a short walk to the bathrooms and the three way intersection and shuttle to the expo.
The area is quite large for tents that I have saved. We have a picnic table and a fire place. I drive an old GMC Suburban that is dark blue, tan and gray primer.

I was the lucky recipient of the complimentary entry to the
Nor Cal Multisport Festival held at LakeSonoma a couple of weeks
ago. I’ve been asked to give a quick recap of the event and how By
The Beach Productions runs the show.
First the good:
LakeSonoma area is truly beautiful.
This event easily compares with Pacific
Grove for scenery. Also, I prefer lake swims to
ocean, so it was nice to swim in a clean lake (however it was pretty cold…somewhere
between 61 and 65 degrees). Well, that’s the highlights (pretty
short list)…
The bad:
The swim started and finished in two different places. Not
such a big deal, except the start was at the boat launch, while boats were
launching (props and swimmers don’t mix well). The starter had no
megaphone and was trying to shout instructions over the boats, trucks, and
athletes warming up. Oh, yeah, we started 45 minutes late. The swim
was good, but at the finish, you had to climb 50 or so stairs straight up (60
or 70 degrees up). BytheBeach has a thing about getting out of the swim
and then running and climbing to T1.
On to the bike:
I may be whining, but the course was brutal. I’m
using Wildflower as the benchmark for “hard” and this event made
Wildflower seem flat. You started out going down the damn 1.5 miles and
then out about 4 miles to the turn around point. Then you climbed back up
and kept going up and kept going up (you get the point). You basically
climbed for about 7-8 miles with a couple of small breaks. The climbs had
some serious grade.
Coming back down wasn’t too bad, but you had to watch
out for the 3-cattle guards (if you didn’t brake, you’d cross them
at about 35-40 mph).
The run:
The run had potential to be enjoyable, however, it was
extremely hilly and it was a trail run. It was single track all the way,
plenty of roots, rocks, and streams to navigate and a nice uphill finish.
The festival:
There was no festival. There was one vendor selling a
sports drink (Revenge) which wasn’t even out on the course.
All in all, it was a really hard course and not well
organized (By the Beach Productions sent out an e-mail to all athletes
apologizing for how poorly the event was run.)
I have run one other By the Beach triathlon (Santa Cruz). It was
much better organized, but I’m not impressed with the production overall.
For the money, I’d rather do a Tri-California or J&A Production
event. And if you want “grass-roots” and keeping it cheaper, check
out the Windman Tri ($75 for Olympic). At least it was free.
If you have any other questions, shoot me an e-mail.
I’m doing the Olympic course on
Sunday. I’m planning to drive down Sunday morning (early). So if anyone
needs a ride, let me know.

For those of you who are going to Wildflower next
weekend, I talked to Prof. Hatch today and he is planning to go down on
Wednesday to reserve a large campsite for us. I am going
to put a list together of who all is going. Also, we are planning on a
pasta party on both Friday and Saturday nights. We'll need
pasta, sauce, salad, bread, and anything else someone wants to
contribute.
If you're planning on going down, but not camping
out with M2T2 you are still welcome to come to the dinners.
Anyway, please send me your name plus how many
people will be with you, which race you are doing, which nights you
will want to eat, if you will be camping at the site with M2T2, and
most importantly what food you will bring with you.
Has anyone seen the M2T2 flag??? Apparantly
it has been missing for some time.
By the way, for those of you who don't know me,
I'm Jay Calvert and this is my first long course event. If you
see someone that is not on the M2T2 distrubtion, please make sure that they
know about this. Thanks.

I'm doing the Long Course. I am planning on camping Friday night only.
I will bring a load of pasta and sauce (5 lbs. of pasta and 3 large jars of sauce).
Prof. Hatch has my large pot and some utensils as well, which I left in his trailer last year.
I'll be coming down solo.
See you all next week.

Thanks all for BSIM tips. Most of us have (presumably) done
triathlons for a while and know most of it, but there is always that
one little tip that may help! A couple tidbits from talking to the
BSIM office:
- recommend you bring a couple gels, just in case, if you plan on
finishing in the latter 50% - they have run low/out in past years at
some stations (although I find this unacceptable!)
- there are no restrictions on headphones
- recommend you go to the expo on Friday vice Saturday, for us locals,
as the later bus times will likely be not be available for assignment
at the Saturday expo
Good luck fellow participants. Ed

Big Sur will have sweat bags available, so you don't have to worry about wearing
throw-away sweats, unless you want to. The Body Glide comment was spot on.
That stuff really works well. I would also recommend putting on some sport's
suntan lotion (hard to sweat off) before getting dressed in the morning. Food
wise, just like any race, I wouldn't recommend any fiber and keep the
fat/protein low. I like to use gels and a gatorade type drink, but whatever
works for you (same as training). Good luck and have fun.

The below comes from experience in several marathons. While I have never done the BSIM, I have done their half both times and am familiar with the way the course and race organizers set up, and have also talked to others who have done the full.
Not sure how this race is, but many will not let you use audio devices on the course. You will have to check the course rules.
As for the sweats, I would not start the race with them. A good rule of thumb: if you are chilly while waiting for the starters gun to go off, then you are dressed appropriately; if you are comfortable, then you are overdressed. You should still dress warm until about 10 minutes or so before the race. There should be race bags into which you can put your sweats at the start point that you will be able to pick up at the finish point after the race.
If this is your first race, you may consider taking a water belt and some power gels or something of the equivalent. My experience with the organizers of this race is that they do not have enough of the non-liquid stuff along the courses. Taking a water belt is especially important if the weather is warm. If it is cool for the entire race, then it should not be a problem. Luckily this year starts earlier than it has in the past, so the bulk of the race should be cool.
Some clothing tips. Wear nylon or dry-fit as much as possible. If your wear a cotton top, and are a male, then you will want to wear band-aids over the nipples to avoid chaffing. Also lube the groin well so avoid chaffing there as well. Body glide works well and can be purchased down at the Treadmill.
Be sure to hydrate beginning a week out, and carbo load 36-48 hours out. Contrary to popular belief, carbo loading the night before really does no good unless you have a super fast metabolism. It does not hurt, but that does not give enough time for the body to completely process. Usually it just makes it so you have to go to the bathroom in the morning or, even worse, along the course.
Good luck. Since this is your first marathon, just focus on finishing and do not worry about the time. Anyone who finishes a marathon is a winner.

My plan: - bring old sweats to discard, to stay warm in the morning - not planning on carrying any water or food - the course seems well stocked - gonna bring my mp3 player and sunglasses, that's it - gonna ride my bike to the bus departure point and lock it up there - other tips? I haven't done a marathon before, wondering if I should be bringing anything else, especially for this BSM

If you're drinking a Frapputhingy, be sure to take a little baggy when you need to go. Personally, I get the willies just thinking about it. Diuretics and marathons don't mix...but hey it's your party.

Since the start is not until 0700, and the busses are leaving early, I plan to pack a full breakfast (yogurt, bagel and Starbucks Frappaccino) and eat it on the bus. Also bringing:
- a disposable camera for pictures throughout the course (I did that for Marine Corps and got great pictures)
- a hat
- gel paks (not advisable unless you've used on practice runs)
- don't forget to put on sunscreen before leaving
- Another idea if you don't want to throw away sweats is to wear a large trashbag or get a mylar blanket from an auto emergency car kit
- I need to find out if they give out sponges; if not, I bring a hanky for wetting at water stations and wiping sweat

Anyone have any tips from last year for getting to the start point as
late as possible? Obviously take the latest published bus (I think
4:45!). But that's still a very early get-up and a long wait until
the start.
