Subject: NPS Bike Team and MS 150
Gentlemen,
Please see the two e-mails I’ve cut and pasted below. These e-mails
were sent late last month to several NPS individuals who expressed interest in
joining an NPS Bike Team to raise money to fight Multiple Sclerosis by
participating in the MS 150 “Waves to Wine” ride in September.
I am forwarding these e-mails to you because you have either expressed
interest in joining the team or someone else informed me you might be interested.
NPS has, in fact, formed a team to participate in this event. If you are
interested in joining it, please follow the directions in the e-mail
immediately below. Right now we have 6 members on the team.
We will have our first team ride this Thursday, 17 July, a ~15 mile warm-up.
You are welcome to join us. We will meet at the bike path across
from the Del Monte Ave Gate (where the homeless congregate) at 1530. We
will conclude our ride with refreshments somewhere along Cannery Row or in
downtown
Please contact me with any questions. And please let me know of anyone
else who might be interested.
Thank you.
Regards,

It is now possible to register as a member of the team via the “MS 150
Waves to Wine” web site. Please use the following link:
http://main.nationalmssociety.org/site/TR/Bike/CANBikeEvents/1760349509?pg=team&fr_id=9066&team_id=129590
If this link isn’t working, please do the following:
- Go to the MS 150 Waves to Wine Home Page
- Click on “Enter Site”
- Click on “Join a team”
- Type in “
” in the “Team Name” block, then click on “Search for a Team”Naval Postgraduate School - Click on the NPS link that appears below the
search block
- Click on “
” link and follow the directions.Join Naval Postgraduate School
Please note:
- The current registration fee is $25. As
of 29 June the registration fee goes up to $40—SO REGISTER SOON!
- Each rider for this event must raise at least
$350 in pledges to participate. Both times I participated in the
past I was easily able to get over $1000 in pledges, so I am confident
everyone can achieve the minimum of $350. In my experience most
people will gladly contribute at least $20 for you to cover the distance.
According to the web site, pledges must be turned in no later than
15 October. In my experience I have always turned the money in the
first day of the event (before the ride begins) if not earlier.
I have researched the possibility of getting jerseys for the team. I have
found a good vendor (VOmax) which also happens to be the preferred apparel
supplier for this event. In order to get semi-custom jerseys (meaning an
NPS logo is superimposed on one of 29 existing templates) we must place an
order for at least 10 jerseys. So please spread the word and help us get
at least a team of 10 members put together! [Fully customized jerseys
require an order of at least 25.]
We have 81 days to train and raise money! I’ll follow up soon with
all committed team members to discuss and arrange our first team training ride.
THANKS!

Ladies and Gentlemen,
You have received this e-mail because, at one time or another, you expressed
interest in prospectively participating as an NPS Bike Team member to raise
money to fight Multiple Sclerosis (MS).
The Northern California Chapter of the National MS Society organizes and
executes an annual fundraising event, the MS 150 "Waves to Wine" bike
ride. MS 150 events take place across the country. Most cyclists
who participate in these events ride a total of 150 miles over a two-day
period, i.e. 75 miles each day (though other mileage options, both shorter and
longer, are available).
Please use the following web address to learn more about the event:
http://bikecan.nationalmssociety.org/site/PageServer?pagename=BIKE_CAN_homepage
I am volunteering to serve as captain of an NPS Bike Team for this event.
We must have a minimum of 4 participants to form a team. If I
receive three other commitments I will register an NPS team via the MS 150
event web site and invite you to join it. PLEASE NOTE: If you wish to
join the team, please inform me but DO NOT try to register as an individual or
look for an NPS Bike Team on the MS 150 web site (there isn't one yet) until I
inform you to do so. If you register as an individual and then try to
join the team you may encounter some difficulties (which I have already experienced,
and am in the process of resolving).
I've participated in 2 MS 150 events in
This year's event is scheduled for 13-14 September. Day 1 starts in
As of today we have 82 days to train for the event (plenty of time), but if we
want to form a team and get custom jerseys, we should do so soon. Because
this is an opportunity to promote NPS, I will contact the NPS Foundation to see
if it is possible for the Foundation to fund or help subsidize team jerseys.
I've seen all skill levels participate in this event, so you only need to be a
cycling enthusiast (not an expert) to enjoy this event.
If you are interested, please let me know soon. You are welcome to
forward this e-mail to anyone else you know at NPS who might be interested in
joining the team. If you do forward this e-mail, please send it to
individuals only--please DO NOT forward it to any group e-mail addresses.
This is a good cause and will also help promote NPS. I hope you decide to
join the team!
Thanks.
