I have been asked many times by students, where
we stand with the law if we have to use our martial
arts.

The point here is how do we gauge excessive force
during the heat of the moment when you may be in a life
or death situation.

The simple answer is to
only use sufficient techniques to get the job done and
not to continue beating the attacker once he has been
beaten.

Whatever the case the law will often side against you if
you use your martial arts. An example of this
happened a few years ago when one of my students rushed to
the aid of a innocent guy and his girl friend who
were being attacked by three guys. He put two down and
the other ran off. Later he spent the night in jail
after these three thugs filed a complaint against
him!

So when asked the question “where do I stand with
the law if attacked on the street” I ask the
student
What they would prefer.

A night in jail or a
night in hospital.

If a complete stranger takes
it upon himself to do me bodily harm or even
threaten my life, then they should be prepared to pay the
price. My priorities lay with my family. I owe it to
them to defend myself by whatever means it takes to
walk away from the confrontation and not be carried
off on a stretcher.

Your views as always are
welcome.

Steve.
