Re: you think you lost students

It’s difficult.

The Lun Kuen Academy is my
school and in this association I am the Chief
Instructor. Because of this I not only teach my students but
grade them too. The only way that this can work is if I
can be totally impartial when I come to conduct a
grading, whether it be one of my students students or one
of my own, they have to be treated the
same.

On occasions a student will fly through a grading
and rest on his/her laurels when the next approaches
thinking that they will pass easily. Each grading is
harder than the last and I expect a higher standard for
each.

When I grade I fill in a grading sheet which I later
prepare as a formal document which highlights the
students strong and weak points and suggests ways to make
improvements if required.

I am very approachable and
always prepared to go through things with my students
that may be causing them problems but I cant do the
hard work for them.

If a student does not
bother to practise out side of class then it is unlikely
that they will do well when they come to grade.
Usually a poor result or a failure will spurn them on to
do better next time, but, in some cases they drop
out.

If a student drops out then so be it, I will not
chase after them and try to encourage them to come back
because if they do it once they will do it again and this
is not fair to the others.

All of my students
who have stood the test of time, bit the bullet and
took criticism constructively have become stars in my
eyes and excellent ambassadors for Lun Kuen, needless
to say, I am very proud of
them.

Regards,

Steve.
