New One Way Loop
The Metro Planning Commission will hold meetings in the weeks ahead to
explore the feasibility of a second loop in Cherokee Park, around Big
Rock Park, similar to the Scenic Loop. This is a great opportunity to get
more running, biking and walking space away from dangerous traffic.
Please watch the Courier Journal for the dates of future meetings and
plan to attend. In addition, please call or write at least one or all of
the following people to express your interest in the new loop. If you
don’t call this project won't happen. Only the opponents are expressing
their opinions. Your voice and appearance will make the difference. Here
are some suggestions of whom to call.
Ken Baker, Planning Supervisor , Louisville Metro Planning and Design,
574-6230 kendal.baker@...
Tom Owen, 8th District Metro Council, 574-3455 Tom.owen@...
Tina Ward-Pugh 9th District Metro Council, 574- 3908
Tina.ward-pugh@...
Susan Rademacher, Metro Parks, 456-8138 Susan.rademaker@...
John Schenkenfelder, Task Force Subcommittee member, 562-7726

NIck,
Great points about the need for a loop. Get your friends to write and
call. Write to the Courier Journal. We can get this loop if enough people
respond over the
privileged few who want the park for a short-cut home. John

I am writing you to urge that the Seneca / Cherokee park road be ONE WAY
for auto traffic.
I understand there's a vocal opposition to expanding the one way loop.
I've seen one write in (CJ letter to the editor) that the road is too
narrow for runners.
Well, runners use these loops frequently. I run with a group (5 to 9
people) nearly every Tuesday morning from the Big Rock parking lot. We
run (jog/walk in my case) around the Scenic Loop and back to Big Rock,
leaving at 6:15 am. Of course it's DARK this time of year for the first
part of the outing and later it will be dark for the entire run. We
always encounter others out on this route also. A one way loop
connecting the Scenic Loop and Big Rock would certainly be a safety
issue. Many training groups use the parks for long run training.
Returning from the Scenic Loop (one way) to Seneca (two way) can be
tricky, especially during a long run. I've often found myself in the
wrong lane on the way back, thinking it's still one way.
Most users of the park would favor the one way proposal. A vocal
minority would be inconvenienced by having to use another route, but the
parks weren't designed to be auto thoroughfares.

Nick:
I’ll pass your comments on to the Planner working with the Neighborhood,
who will be presenting before the Planning Commission. It is possible
that the Item #35 relating to a one-way loop will be added back into the
plan when it comes before the Planning Commission. I will also pass on
your thoughts to the Task Force. Although you live outside the
neighborhood, the parks belong to us all.
Tom Owen favors on inclusion of Item #35 in the Neighborhood Plan, as
does CW Tina Ward-Pugh. It’s inclusion will allow for a more thorough
review of the proposal and greater public input.
Thanks, and see on along the usually running routes.
