for players to be allowed to participate in the IHSA
Sanctioned event, they were nominated by a coach from
either their school, another school, or club. On
behalf of the players, we thank the coaches very much
for taking the time and energies to nominate their
players, and also thank the coaches from
throughout the state of Illinois that have taken the
time from their busy schedules to volunteer and coach
at this event. Some of the finest coaching talents
will be used for the event.
We are also extremely proud to announce that the event
is being sponsored by Central Illinois Volleyball
Association, Pepsi Cola, Adidas, Mikasa, and United
States Professional Volleyball (USPV) as it was last
year. The USPV will have 4 of their Professional

Association will provide manpower and tournament
directors for scoring, officiating, and basically
running the event.
The purpose of the Classic is to bring positive
closure to the spectacular careers of these young
ladies whether they are playing at the collegiate
level or not and from feedback we received, last years
event was an invaluable tool for coaches and
recruiters. For your help and assistance, we will
denote the players that have already committed, which
is a very minimal number. We will also be compiling a
lengthy recruiting packet (30+ pages), as was compiled
last year that will be distributed to the coaches at
the event free of charge. If a coach is unable to
attend we are pleased to report
that we have an underwriter that is helping provide
the expense of us printing and sending out the
packets.
Also, we will be compiling a packet of information
etc. for each of the players to give them when they
pick up uniforms prior to their practice on December
1, 2001. Any information about your program and/or
institution that you would like to have included into
these packets must be received by November 25, 2001.
Please send all of this information to Eastside VBC;
1621 Highview Road; East Peoria, IL. 61611.
We are also asking RSVP commitments of coaches and
recruiters that plan on attending so we can compile a
pass list and have enough packets printed, so please
acknowledge if you will be attending and the names of
your associates that will be attending. For your
housing needs, please check the link on our website
for establishments close to Eastside Sports Centre.
For housing needs and information of the Annual
Festival of Lights, please contact (800) 365-3743 and
talk with Norma Joseph. The Festival of Lights has
been going on for 20+ years and is an event you will
not want to miss while attending the Classic.
If you should need any further information, or have
questions, please do not hesitate to contact me at
(309) 699-8738, or respond to email at
Eastside_vbc@....
Best Regards,

Dear Coaches,

Annual Pepsi Cola Illinois Girls High School All Star
Classic on December 1-2, 2001. The 2-day event
will be held in its entirety at Eastside Centre; #1
Eastside Drive; East Peoria, IL. 61611. The format for
the event will be as it was last year with a 2
hour practice session for each team on Saturday,
December 1, and the Classic Event on Sunday, December
2.
We are proud to announce that the event is being
sponsored by Central Illinois Volleyball Association,
Pepsi Cola, Adidas, Mikasa, and USPV as it was
last year. Like last year the event will feature over
200 of the best senior players from throughout the
Midwest. We are currently in the process of
completing the nominations which has been extended to
October 31, 2001. You can find an updated list of
candidates for the event on our website at
www.eastsidevb.com for your perusal. Nominations are
coming in virtually everyday so check back often for
the updates. Since this event is a
sanctioned Illinois High School Association event all
outgoing senior players in Illinois are eligible as
well as seniors from other states, even if they
have committed to play collegiately at an institution.
The purpose of the Classic is to bring positive
closure to the spectacular careers of these young
ladies whether they are playing at the collegiate
level of not and from feedback we received, last years
event was an invaluable tool for coaches and
recruiters. For your help and assistance, we will
denote the players that have already committed. We
will also be compiling a lengthy recruiting packet,
as was compiled last year that will be distributed to
the coaches at the event free of charge. If a coach
is unable to attend we are pleased to report that
we have an underwriter that is helping provide the
expense of us printing and sending out the packets..
Also, we will be compiling a packet of information
etc. for each of the players. Any information about
your program and/or institution that you would like
can be put into these bags if we receive this by
November 25, 2001. Please send all of this
information to Eastside VBC; 1621 Highview Road; East
Peoria, IL. 61611.
We are also asking RSVP commitments of coaches and
recruiters that plan on attending so we can compile a
pass list and have enough packets printed,
so please acknowledge if you will be attending and the
names of your associates that will be attending. For
your housing needs, please check the link
on our website for establishments close to Eastside
Sports Centre.
Lastly, this is a series of messages about the event
that will be forthcoming during the next few weeks to
keep you updated about the event. If you do
not want to receive this information, or want it
redirected to someone that should receive the
information, please respond to this email with remove
or
the address of the person that should receive it. If
you should need any further information, or have
questions, please do not hesitate to contact me at

good luck during your seasons.

USA Women Capture 2001 NORCECA Championship
Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic -- For the first time in 18 years the
USA Women’s National Volleyball Team claimed the gold medal at the
NORCECA Zone Championships Sunday evening. Team USA defeated the number
one team in the world for the second time in three days to claim the
title. The U.S. defeated Cuba in four sets (20-25, 25-22, 25-18, 27-25)
and clinched a bid in the prestigious six-team FIVB Grand Champions Cup
in Japan later this year.
USA outside hitter Tara Cross-Battle (Long Beach, Calif./Long Beach
State) was named the tournament’s most valuable player. She was excited
to break Cuba’s long hold on the NORCECA Zone title.
“I am so happy for this team,” said Cross-Battle. “We played so well
when it counted. Every player deserves this win. It feels real good to
know that we beat Cuba for the gold medal after nearly 20 years. It is
finally our turn to enjoy it.”
Team USA won the tournament despite the absence of outside hitter Logan
Tom (Salt Lake City, Utah). Tom is a junior at Stanford University and
did not travel with the team.
USA libero Stacy Sykora (Burleson, Texas/Texas A&M) was awarded the
tournament’s best receiver award. Sykora said it was exciting to see the
American Flag raised following the win.
“I think it is wonderful that Team USA can come together through
everything and win the gold tonight,” said Sykora. “The National Anthem
was the greatest moment tonight and the most memorable. To be standing
on the first place stand for two tournaments in a row is amazing and I
hope we only proceed to get better.”
USA opposite hitter Sarah Noriega (Ulysses, Kan./Loyola Marymount) turned in
a great performance in the finals. Noriega led all scorers with 21 points,
including 15 kills and six blocks. Danielle Scott (Baton Rouge, La./Long
Beach State) finished with 14 kills and four blocks. Noriega was named best
blocker. USA setter Robyn Ah Mow (Honolulu, Hawaii/Univ. of Hawaii) was the
tournament’s best setter. USA middle blocker Heather Bown (Yorba Linda,
Calif./Univ. of Hawaii) rounded out the U.S. award winners collecting the
best attacker award.
Team USA returns to Colorado Springs, Colo., to train for the Grand
Champions Cup, played November 13-18. Other teams competing at the Cup
include Japan, Russia, China, Brazil and Korea. The U.S. will be
attempting to win its second major world competition this year. They
captured the 2001 FIVB Grand Prix for the first time since 1995 earlier
this year.

Long Beach State strengthens hold on No. 1
ARLINGTON, Va. - Top-ranked Long Beach State solidified its hold on No. 1,
picking up 23 more first-place votes than it had a week ago. Second-ranked
Nebraska, which dropped to No. 2 last week despite receiving one more
first-place vote than the 49ers, saw its total votes for No. 1 drop from 33
to 10.
Long Beach State (11-0) received 1,615 points to Nebraska's 1,567. Last
week, Long Beach State led the Cornhuskers (13-1) by just three points in
the voting. The 49ers handed Nebraska its only loss earlier this season.
Elsewhere, none of the top seven teams changed places, with USC, Stanford,
UCLA Wisconsin and Arizona holding down spots No. 3 through No. 7. No team
moved more than three places up or down in the rankings. No. 25 Kansas State
dropped out of the poll and was replaced by Colorado (9-4), which came in at
No. 23.

Long Beach State overtakes Nebraska at No. 1
ARLINGTON, Va. - It may have come a month late, but Long Beach State
finally overtook Nebraska at the top of the USA TODAY/AVCA Top 25
Coaches' Poll. The undefeated 49ers beat the then-No.1 Cornhuskers on Sept.
1 but failed to move ahead of Nebraska in the rankings despite winning on
the court.
The vote was by a razor-thin margin, with the Cornhuskers (10-1) actually
receiving 33 first-place votes to the 49ers' 32. But Long Beach State (9-0)
received 1,592 points in the overall voting, three more than Nebraska's
1,589.
Elsewhere, there was little change in the Top 25. Southern California jumped
two spots to No. 3 while Stanford and UCLA rounded out the top five. Texas
dropped out of the rankings after being ranked No. 23 last week and was
replaced by Kansas State, which reentered the rankings at No. 25.

I am a teacher in Monroe, LA at Nevill HS. I am currently looking to
start a program within NE LA, and specifically at my school to begin
with. My plan was to get interest, possibly some financial backing
for balls, etc... first in a Club situation and then move to a full
out program. I was hoping to get information from anyone out there
who could give my pointers, tips, direction. I love this sport and
have played from junior high through college. These girls need
another sport! If anyone can offer advise I would greatly appreciate

2001 Summer World University Games
USA Men's Volleyball Team Defeats France 3-1 To Win The Gold Medal
At The 2001 World University Games
Thursday, August 30, 2001
USA Men's Volleyball Team Defeats France 3-1 To Win The Gold Medal At The
2001 World University Games
BEIJING, CHINA - The USA Men's Volleyball Team made history tonight by
winning their first ever World University Games gold medal with a three
games to one victory over France (26-28, 25-19, 25-18, 25-21) at the 21st
Summer World University Games. It was fitting that the gold medal match,
attended by 14,500 spectators at the Capital Gymnasium in Beijing, ended on
a great defensive stuff block by Mac Wilson (Palmdale, California/Brigham
Young University) as defense has been the team's cornerstone since the
beginning of this tournament.
The USA won the gold medal match in much the same way as they won every
match of this tournament, with exceptional defense and contributions from
the entire team. The 2001 USA Summer World University Games Men's Volleyball
Team will forever be remembered as the first team to win the gold medal in
the men's volleyball competition of the World University Games for the
United States of America. This is only the second ever World University
Games medal of any color for the USA. The best previous finish for the USA
in men's volleyball came ten years ago with a silver medal at the 1991
Summer World University Games in Sheffield, England. France started off the
match with the upper hand and won the first game 28-26, but the USA used
their defense to turn the momentum and capture the next three games, the
match, and the gold medal.
On the tremendous defensive effort shown by his team tonight and throughout
the tournament Nieves added, "We came into the
tournament feeling that our defense was the strength of the team,
that we could score points while we were serving. We felt the
best part of our defense was our blocking, players like Mac Wilson
who control the net and have the ability to slow down the
other teams attack. We also got good serving throughout the
tournament which makes blocking easier. We also dug the ball
well. Jim Polster had a tremendous defensive effort digging many important
balls for us tonight."
The USA turned in another all around exceptional performance tonight and
finished the tournament with an overall tournament record to seven wins and
no losses. For the tournament, the USA won 21 games and lost only four. In
tonight's gold medal match with France, the USA posted 59 kills, a .390
hitting percentage, 15 blocks, four service aces, and 33 digs. There is an
old saying in sports that offense wins games, but defense wins
championships. Team USA has epitomized this saying throughout this
tournament as they have used great defense to set up their explosive
offense. The tremendous defensive play tonight of Jim
Polster (Laguna Niguel, California/Long Beach State University)
characterized the team's approach to this tournament. Polster
had an amazing 17 digs to lead the team tonight. He also had seven kills, a
.420 hitting percentage, two blocks, and three service aces. Polster's digs
were crucial to the team's success as they gave the USA a chance to set up
and use their offensive weapons.
Curt Toppel (Pacific Palisades, California/Stanford University) led the team
in kills for a second consecutive night with 20. Toppel had a .460 hitting
percentage, three blocks, and three digs. David McKienzie (Littleton,
Colorado/Long Beach State University) recorded 10 kills of his own along
with one service ace, and one dig. Mac Wison, who ended the game with a
stuff block, posted 9 kills, a .570 hitting percentage, three blocks, and
three digs. Setter and Team Captain Chris Seiffert (Laguna Niguel,
California/Long Beach State University) led the team in blocks with six. He
also had seven kills, a .670 hitting percentage, and one dig. Colin McMillan
(Burlington, Wisconsin/Ohio State University) pitched in six kills, a ..450
hitting percentage, one block, and three digs. Libero Andy Rivera (Los
Angeles, California/University of California, Santa Barbara) had four digs.
"This tournament was a very, very tremendous team effort," said Mac Wilson,
member of the reigning 2001 NCAA National Champion BYU Cougars Men's
Volleyball Team. "Within the two and a half months we were together, we
pulled together as well as any team I have ever played on. It was just
incredible how well the coaches did and how well the players did in uniting
their efforts. This is something that I will remember very fondly for the
rest of my life because of the unity of the team and the coaches."
On winning the gold medal Jim Polster stated, "I can't believe it! I've
never won anything before and this is just too much. It's
great! It hasn't sunk in yet. This is truly remarkable. I love it. This
match exemplified how we played the whole tournament. Our
block and defense came through again and earned us our medal."
Curt Toppel concurred, "I don't know what to say. I'm pretty much
overwhelmed by this whole feeling right now. The entire
team has always said 'we were going to save what we've got to the end.'
Everyone put in a really good effort tonight.
Everyone really brought it together and that is what we needed to do to win
tonight. We did that and we've got gold medals to
show for it."
Starters for Team USA in tonight's match were outside hitter Curt Toppel,
outside hitter Jim Polster, middle blocker Mac Wilson, middle blocker Colin
McMillan, outside hitter David McKienzie, setter Chris Seiffert, and libero
Andy Rivera. Also seeing action were Keith Barnett and Chris Gisslen.

USA Men's Volleyball Team Toppel(s) Russia 3-0 To Advance To Gold Medal
Match Of 2001 World University Games
BEIJING, CHINA - Curt Toppel (Pacific Palisades, California/ Stanford
University) could not have picked a better night to have his
best performance as his team leading 17 kills propelled the USA Men's
Volleyball Team past Russia in straight sets (25-19,
28-26, 26-24) and into tomorrow's gold medal match of the 2001 Summer World
University Games. Tonight's semifinal victory
over Russia at Beijing's Capital Gymnasium guaranteed at least a tie for the
best U.S. finish ever at the Summer World University
Games. Team USA will try to win their first ever Summer World University
Games gold medal in men's volleyball when they meet
France in tomorrow night's final (August 30), which is scheduled to begin at
8:30 p.m. at the Capital Gymnasium in Beijing, China.
The USA came away with the silver medal in Men's Volleyball at the 1991
Summer World University Games in Sheffield, England,
their only medal in the history of the Summer World University Games.
"For two matches in a row we have been fortunate enough to beat really good
teams," said Ruben Nieves, Head Coach of the 2001
USA Summer World University Games Men's Volleyball Team. "I thought that in
many ways our performance tonight was a carry
over from last night against Brazil. It started with our coaching staff
putting together a very good complete, accurate scouting report
so that the team knew what to expect when we took the court. That's the easy
part, though, the hard part is what the players do,
they go out there and they execute the game plan, they make sure that it
happens. Again, we had a pretty good idea of what Russia
was going to do tonight. They are so good, so big, so physical, though
knowing what they are going to do might not be enough. I
really hand it to the twelve players on this team for playing as well as
they did tonight. Chris (Seiffert) did a great job of utilizing
Curt Toppel tonight. Curt had his best offensive match of the tournament and
Chris did a great job of picking up on that and getting him lots of balls.
Chris did a great job getting our team side-outs against an imposing block.
He had them (Russia) off balance from the start, throughout the match he
knew what their middle blockers were doing and Chris's performance tonight
was huge."
On looking ahead to the gold medal match Nieves added, "We like the way
we've played throughout the tournament and maybe what we like best is how
we've gotten better with each successive match. We had to be better tonight
than we were last night, and we were good last night. The competition here
is outstanding and it is a credit to this team that we have only lost three
sets. We know that we have a very difficult opponent tomorrow in France.
They're a very athletic team, a very spirited team. You can see the way they
celebrate after their victories how much this means to them. Our goal is to
win the gold medal, but we know that France wants the exact same thing."
The USA turned in another all around solid performance tonight and improved
their overall tournament record to six wins and no losses. This was the
second consecutive match in which the USA has not lost a game. In fact they
have only lost three games in the entire tournament (USA has won eighteen
games and lost only three). As a team the USA posted 45 kills, a .380
hitting percentage, seven blocks, six service aces, 25 digs. The team also
had 18 controlled blocks, which means that although the block itself did not
score it allowed the U.S. to control the ball offensively. Curt Toppel, who
led the team with 17 kills also posted a .640 hitting percentage and four
digs. David McKienzie (Littleton, Colorado/Long Beach State University)
recorded 13 kills of his own along with two service aces and four digs. Jim
Polster (Laguna Niguel, California/Long Beach State University) had five
kills, three blocks, one service ace and seven digs. Colin McMillan
(Burlington, Wisconsin/Ohio State University) pitched in five kills, a .670
hitting percentage, two blocks, two digs, and four controlled blocks. Mac
Wilson (Palmdale, California/Brigham Young University) had three kills, two
blocks, two service aces, two digs, and nine controlled blocks. Setter and
Team Captain Chris Seiffert (Laguna Niguel, California/Long Beach State
University) had two kills, a .670 hitting percentage, one service ace, two
digs, and two controlled blocks. Libero Andy Rivera (Los Angeles,
California/University of California, Santa Barbara) had four digs. Keith
Barnett (Hermosa Beach, California/Pepperdine University) substituted in a
serving role and came through big time with two service aces in the latter
part of game one; the U.S. scored three consecutive points with Barnett
serving.
"I think that we gave a really good effort tonight," said Curt Toppel. "We
had to play our hardest. Medals were in our sights. We
knew that if we won this we were guaranteed a medal. That was just in the
back of my mind and I was just going to try to give my all
tonight. I think as a team we put it all together. The two months we've been
training together has really paid off. I definitely felt like I was on
tonight, Chris (Seiffert, setter) was giving me some great sets and things
were just flowing. I think France is going to be
tough, they've worked hard and they are here for a reason. I think that if
we play like we did tonight and give one-hundred and ten
percent I think we have a shot at the gold."
"We have some great offensive weapons," said Chris Seiffert. "We have
phenomenal offensive guys standing at the box. Each night
a couple of guys step it up and when all cylinders are firing we're a tough
team to stop."
On playing for the gold medal at the 2001 World University Games Seiffert
added, "We knew that the USA best finish at the World
University Games was the silver medal. Coming into this tournament, I
honestly didn't know how well we would do. I didn't know
the competition. I didn't know how well we would play. I had an idea of how
well we could play. I think we are meeting our
expectations of ourselves and I think it would be a great honor as an
American volleyball player to get the first gold ever."
Starters for Team USA in today's match were outside hitter Curt Toppel,
outside hitter Jim Polster, middle blocker Mac Wilson,
middle blocker Colin McMillan, outside hitter David McKienzie, setter Chris
Seiffert, and libero Andy Rivera. Also seeing action
were Keith Barnett and Chris Gisslen.

USA Women’s National Volleyball Team Captures Gold Medal
MACAU, CHINA – The USA Women’s National Volleyball Team captured the
goldmedal at the 2001 FIVB World Grand Prix for the first time since 1995
Sunday afternoon. Team USA cruised to a stunning four set victory over
home-standing China (26-28, 25-20, 25-21, 25-11) in front of over 5,500 fans
to put the Americans on top of the volleyball world.
USA veteran middle blocker Danielle Scott (Baton Rouge, La./Long Beach
State) was named tournament MVP and best blocker after scoring 22 points (17
kills, five blocks) in the US victory.
“Wow!” said Scott following the win. “That was a great win for the USA over
China in China. Even though the gym was filled to capacity, one could hear
a pin drop as USA rallied together play after play. It was a huge team win
and I feel excited and blessed to have been a part of it.”
USA head coach Toshiaki Yoshida celebrated his first major international
championship as head coach of team. Yoshida took over the position
following the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games when then head coach Mick Haley
departed for the University of Southern California. Yoshida served as an
assistant under Haley at the Games. The significance of the championship
was not lost on Yoshida, but he knows his team must get back work.
“We played with a lot of energy, soul, and spirit tonight,” said
Yoshida. “Our blocking was good and we played exceptional defense. We had
the right players and the appropriate training for this tournament. However,
this is just the start of the quadrennial and we need to maintain this
level. We still have a lot of room to improve. I know things are going to
get more difficult and all of the teams are going to improve. We have many
issues to solve such as players going overseas and athlete support, but this
was a great win for this team. We have to learn from this win. We need to
keep these veterans and continue to train like we have been doing.”
USA libero Stacy Sykora (Burleson, Texas/Texas A&M) was named the
tournament’s best libero. She says it was a great feeling to climb on
the medal stand.
“It is the greatest feeling to finally be on the winner's stand,” said
Sykora. This team has been through so much together. It is nice to
finally see how much all the hard work can pay off. We won tonight
because we played as a team. It was not the result of one or two
players. Everyone contributed.”
USA outside hitter Logan Tom (Salt Lake City, Utah/Stanford Univ.) added 14
kills and two blocks in the victory, while middle blocker Heather Bown
(Yorba Linda, Calif./Univ. of Hawai’i) contributed 10 kills and three
blocks.

U.S.A. beat China 3-1 (26-28, 25-20, 25-21, 25-11) - duration 1:39
26-Aug, start time: 15:30, end time: 17:09 - Attendance: 5,580
USA overpowered China with superior serving, blocking and spiking.
The first set both teams managed to level the scores twenty times, given
only one to two points difference throughout the entire set.
In the second set scores were also close, however China weaker attacks and
blocks consequently caused them to lose this set (25-20).
The high team spirit superb blocks and spikes led USA to win the third set
(25-21). USA maintained their overwhelming success till the end winning the
last set (25-11), claimed the 2001 WGP title.

There is a women's volleyball "potluck tournament" in Theriot, LA. at 9:00a.m. on August 26th. It will be held at the Dularge Gym (T.P.R.). Entrants must be over the age of 18 to enter and must pay $20.00 registration fee.
At 9:00 a.m. names are pulled from a hat/jar to form the teams. Then, depending upon how many teams we have we begin double elimination or round robin.
It is a good chance to get some serious volleyball going while you meet new people. I'm hoping more people start to come and see how great this sport really is. All levels of skill are welcome.
Thanks
