NASCAR Images and CMT films will release an authorized Dale Earnhardt
documentary titled "Dale: The True Story" before next year's Daytona
500, Street & Smith's SportsBusiness Journal reports. Plans call for
airing the 90-minute film narrated by Paul Newman in markets where
NASCAR races are scheduled. National Cinema Vice President/Digital
Programming Dan Diamond, whose company is promoting the film, says the
company also expects limited runs in major non-race markets such as
New York, Denver and Seattle. Paramount Home Video will handle the
film's DVD release late next year, while CMT will air it after it runs
in theaters. The story says Richard Childress Racing, the team the
seven-time NASCAR Cup champion drove for, and Dale Earnhardt Inc., the
team he founded and which is now run by his widow, Teresa, are
cooperating in the production. Tickets to the screenings in each
market are expected to be $12.50 each and will include a souvenir
magazine produced by Street & Smith's, the parent company of NASCAR
Scene and SceneDaily

Dear Friends:

On behalf of the Hendrick family and the entire Hendrick Motorsports
organization, I'd like to thank you for the outpouring of support
we've received over the past 24 hours. Your encouragement is
sincerely appreciated and welcomed by everyone.

We have scheduled a question-and-answer session in the Atlanta Motor
Speedway media center for Friday, Oct. 29 at 12 p.m. ET. Each
Hendrick Motorsports driver and crew chief will be available at that
time.

Although our foremost concern is for the families and their right to
privacy, please know that we are diligently working to disseminate as
much accurate information as we can. As the facts become available,
we will work with the appropriate authorities to pass them along in a
timely manner.

We will soon have details regarding memorial services, but please
bear with us while specifics are determined. Once plans are
finalized, they will be communicated immediately.

Further inquiries regarding the aircraft investigation should be
directed to the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) public
affairs office at 202-314-6100.

Sincere thanks,
Hendrick Motorsports

Hendrick Motorsports Plane Crashes
Sunday, October 24, 2004
Associated Press

MARTINSVILLE, Va. — A plane owned by the Hendrick Motorsports
(search) organization crashed on its way to a NASCAR race Sunday and
all 10 aboard were killed, federal officials said.

Eight passengers and two pilots died in the crash, a spokesman with
the National Transportation Safety Board (search) said.

A spokesman for a funeral home where the bodies were being taken said
the dead included four relatives of team owner Rick Hendrick — his
son, his brother and twin nieces.

Harry Litten, manager of Moody Funeral Service in Stuart, said the
state police had given him this list of those on the Beech 200:

Ricky Hendrick, Rick Hendrick's son and also a retired NASCAR
(search) driver; John Hendrick, Rick Hendrick's brother and president
of the organization; Kimberly and Jennifer Hendrick, John Hendrick's
twin daughters; Joe Jackson; Jeff Turner; Randy Dorton, the team's
chief engine builder; Scott Latham, a pilot for NASCAR driver Tony
Stewart; and pilots Dick Tracy and Liz Morrison.

Keith Holloway, a spokesman for the NTSB, said investigators were on
their way to the crash site but could not begin their examination
until Monday.

A spokeswoman for the Federal Aviation Administation, Arlene Murray,
said the plane took off from Concord, N.C., and crashed in the Bull
Mountain area about seven miles west of Martinsville's Blue Ridge
Regional Airport at about 12:30 p.m.

The weather in the area was overcast with a low cloud ceiling at the
time of the crash, according to Jan Jackson of the National Weather
Service in Blacksburg. Murray said the pilot was flying by instrument
flight rules, which is the usual practice in bad weather.

Virginia State Police Sgt. Michael Bailey said rescue workers could
not immediately reach the crash site because of the rough terrain.
However, rescue crews later called the funeral home from the site,
Litten said.

NASCAR has spoken with Rick Hendrick, NASCAR spokesman Jim Hunter
said, adding that neither NASCAR nor the Hendrick organization would
have further comment Sunday night.

Hendrick owns the teams of Jeff Gordon, Jimmie Johnson, Terry Labonte
and Brian Vickers in the Nextel Cup Series.

Johnson won Sunday's race at Martinsville Speedway.

NASCAR learned of the plane's disappearance during the race and
withheld the information from the Hendrick drivers until afterward,
Hunter said. All the Hendrick drivers were summoned to the NASCAR
hauler immediately after the race and Johnson was excused from
Victory Lane.

Hendrick has been on a season-long celebration of its 20th
anniversary in NASCAR's top series. The organization has won five of
the series' top titles, three truck series titles, and one Busch
series crown.

The team has over 100 Cup series wins, making Hendrick just the
second team owner in NASCAR's modern era to surpass that mark.

Hendrick employs more than 400 workers at the Charlotte-based
Motorsports compound, which includes race shops and a 15,000-square-
foot museum and team store.

He recently began grooming his son, Ricky, for a larger role with the
company.

Ricky began his career driving a Busch car for his father, but
retired in 2002 because of a shoulder injury suffered in a racing
accident.

His father then made him the owner of the Busch car Vickers drove to
the series championship last season, and Kyle Busch currently pilots.

The main sign outside the facility was covered with a gray tarp, and
the gates were barricaded by deputies who allowed only employees
through.

Some of the operation's 460 employees began gathering in small groups
in the parking lot. They headed inside the building at about 7 p.m.,
remaining for about 90 minutes.

The first bouquet of flowers was dropped outside the offices at about
5 p.m. Several accumulated over the next couple of hours, placed on
shrubbery below a sign denoting "Papa Joe Hendrick Boulevard," which
leads into the compound.

One was left by Donnie Floyd, who said he works on the team of
Hendrick driver Terry Labonte.

"It's just very tough," he said. "We are like one big family.

"When you think about what the Hendrick family has gone through, it's
been very difficult. I couldn't think of anyone who would be better
to work for."

Joe McGovern, a self-described racing fan from nearby Concord who
said he knows the family, drove by to pay his respects.

"It's just devastating," he said. "This was just a great racing team
and they are also such nice people."

CONCORD, N.C. -- Typical racing logic asserts it shouldn't have happened this

Busch, Gordon involved in a wreck on Lap 1

When a guy wrecks on the first lap, has to pit more than once to repair the
resulting sheet metal damage, then spins again and gets plowed by another
competitor, what are the chances he'll even finish on the lead lap, much less
contend for a decent finish and nearly win?

"I'd never have guessed we'd have been sitting here," Gordon said. "That was an
amazing comeback. I'd have bet a million dollars we wouldn't be sitting here."

Gordon's evening began terribly. With the rest of the field, he was coursing
into Turn 1 on the very first lap when Scott Riggs missed a shift in the No. 10
Chevrolet, injuring his engine. The field stacked up behind Riggs, collecting
Gordon.

The DuPont Chevrolet suffered cosmetic damage, forcing Gordon to pit more than
once to correct it. He restarted 35th, still on the lead lap, but struggled with
a loose-handling racecar until he eventually spun out exiting Turn 4 on Lap 75
while running in 30th position.

As he spun into the low groove, Rusty Wallace's Dodge plowed into his left rear
quarter panel.

"I came off (Turn) 4 and locked up the brakes trying to stay off the wall,"
Gordon said. "Everything seemed to be okay, and right there at the end, boom! I
thought 'Okay, that's it. Our night is over.'"

Not so. He was a lap down, but continued to surge through the field to 16th
position when the caution flew on lap 210 for debris. Gordon was the "Lucky
Dog," the first car a lap down, meaning he was back on the lead lap.

Fifty-eight laps later, the dominant Kasey Kahne blew a right front tire and hit
the wall, ending his night and giving hope to the other frontrunners. Gordon
continued to work his way through the field. With 22 to go Jimmy Spencer got
together with Brendan Gaughan and collected championship chasers Mark Martin and
Ryan Newman.

Both were ahead of Gordon. Gordon came out third on the ensuing pit stop, behind
Joe Nemechek, who took two tires, and teammate Jimmie Johnson. He hounded
Johnson for several laps before Johnson pulled away to victory.

Gordon finished second, which was fine by him and his car owner.

"It was an unbelievable night for (Gordon's) team," car owner Rick Hendrick
said. "With all the spins and wrecks and adversity. To see that car come back,
that's a championship effort by that crowd."

Gordon concurred.

"This is unbelievable," he said. "That's why this team is so incredible. That's
the first 1-2 (finish) me and Jimmie have had where we really had to battle. It
was just an incredible effort. We didn't gain a lot of points today, but we
didn't lose a lot and we could've."

As it stands, Gordon remains third in the Chase for the Nextel Cup standings, 74
points behind leader Kurt Busch. He trails second place Dale Earnhardt Jr. by 24
points heading to Martinsville, one of his best tracks.

"That's what we really accomplished here today," Gordon said. "When that race
was over my guys had the biggest smiles on their faces. They couldn't have been
happier.

"This is a huge confidence booster. We've been down the past few weeks. Things
have been going our way. We needed a top five, we needed to get up there and
battle like that.

"Doing it like we did today was even better for us. Taking that momentum into
Martinsville, that shot in the arm will do a lot for us going into next
weekend."

CONCORD, N.C. -- Comments from the 10 drivers in the Chase for the Nextel Cup
following Saturday's UAW-GM Quality 500 at Lowe's Motor Speedway:
1. Kurt Busch, 5,850 points

Finished fourth, his best career finish at Lowe's Motor Speedway.
At one point Saturday, Kurt Busch had to hustle through the grass to avoid an
accident. Credit: Autostock
"It was an awesome job. I really don't know what to say except this is our best
finish ever at Charlotte. And to be able to do this with dodging so many
obstacles, it was the adventure of Kurt Busch and team today.

"The Irwin team did a great job and it was just a matter of every pit stop
trying to understand what to change and what was going to happen next. We did a
good job of just avoiding disaster as many times as it did strike today. I was
just far enough behind some of those accidents to stay away -- having a blown
engine in front of us, to have a few wrecks and just being able to avoid the
disaster.

"It was an adventurous night and we were able to come away with a good finish."
2. Dale Earnhardt Jr., minus-24

Finished third, his third consecutive top-10 finish at Lowe's Motor Speedway.

Busch, Gordon involved in a wreck on Lap 1

""I just have to keep finishing ahead of them. Aside from that, that's all you
can do. Kurt brought his A game, we have our A game going on right now. We just
have to keep having the same kind of weekend.

"Every race, I just focus on a top-10 finish. It's hard, but I try not to think
about where Kurt is or Jeff is on the track or any of the other guys that are
close enough. You just try to get what you can get. There were a couple of times
tonight where I had to kind of pull the reins back a little bit because I got to
racing too hard. There's a point where you don't want to make any mistakes too
early in the race.

"We had a pretty good car, probably a second-place car to the 9 [Kasey Kahne].
We got to trying some things and I wouldn't let them free the car up enough. I
kept telling them I was a little tight, but don't get me too loose. That timid
attitude toward loosening the car up didn't keep up with the track, because it
tightened way up at the end. We had a good car when it counted and we got a
great pit stop there with 20 to go and we were able to get a top-five."
3. Jeff Gordon, minus-74

Finished second despite being involved in two separate incidents in Saturday's
race.
Jeff Gordon suffered damage in two separate incidents Saturday at Lowe's Motor
Speedway. Credit: Autostock
"It was a really up-and-down day. We started off the race and that wreck
happened in Turn 1. We seemed to get the worst of it. All the points guys were
right there around us. That was disappointing to fall that far behind to fix
some damage.

"We took off really good and then got completely loose and sideways. I couldn't
drive it. We need a caution really bad. I didn't realize we were going to be the
caution, but I just couldn't hang onto it any more.

"The car came around on me coming off Turn 4 and I just tried to hang onto it. I
hated it for Rusty, but we were able to make some good adjustments and the car
really came to life. We drove from a long ways back. There were so many moments
today where we could have crumbled, but we stayed calm and came back."
4. Elliott Sadler, minus-157

Finished seventh, his second consecutive top-10 finish.
CHASE FOR THE NEXTEL CUP
• Inside the Chase• Superstore: Chase driver gear• Official Standings•
Expanded access to the Chase on TrackPass

"We had a great race car all night until the last three runs. We got the car a
little bit too tight. I don't know if the track changed that much and we didn't
keep up with it or maybe I gave Todd [Parrott] some wrong information.

"It was a little frustrating there at the end to have a top-three or top-four
car and finish seventh with it. But, all in all, that's not gonna kill us for
the points. We didn't gain anything on the 97 or the 8, but we didn't really
lose anything.

"There are other guys behind us, so I think we're still fourth in the points and
we'll go to Martinsville."
5. Mark Martin, minus-186

Finished 13th after being caught up in a multicar accident on Lap 312.
Mark Martin's team hustle to get its driver back on track. Credit: Autostock
"It's hard for me to believe that some of these guys could pass a driver's test.
I can't believe they've got a driver's license. Golly, we did everything we
could do here. We gave it a great run for the whole team. I can't help it. We
wrecked. It was a great effort by the Viagra team. I'm really proud of them.

"[With the crash] the damage was done. We were in damage control at that point.
There wasn't any crazy frustration going on at that point. It was just how we
could recover the best possible way. We had a shot, but it didn't work out."
6. Tony Stewart, minus-204

Finished 10th despite having a car he threatened to intentionally wreck.

"We were obviously looking for a better race that that, but to come out of here
with a top-10 says a lot about this race team. Nobody ever quits here, that's
for sure."
7. Matt Kenseth, minus-215

Finished 11th, his best finish since New Hampshire last month.

NOTE: Quotes are from crew chief Robbie Reiser.

"All in all, you've got to look at this as a championship team and they put on a
championship effort. We had an opportunity at winning this race tonight. We were
up in the top three all night long and cut a tire down. That cost us big.

"The guys worked and worked and got the car to the point where we could even
race it. We got back on the lead lap and then worked our way back to an
11th-place finish. That just shows to me what type of team this really is."
8. Jimmie Johnson, minus-227

Won Saturday's race to complete a season sweep at Lowe's Motor Speedway.

"We still have hopes [for the championship] but it's out of our control. It's
going to require that the No. 8 and the 97 to have some bad luck. Right now,
with a lot of the drivers having one bad race, maybe a top-five is a realistic
goal that we can control as a team by four performances on the racetrack.

"We need to finish as high as we can in the points and do the best we can. If
these guys bobble up front, then we have a chance. But with two bad races like
we've had, I don't think it's in our control."
9. Ryan Newman, minus-271

Finished 14th after getting caught up in a multicar accident on Lap 312.
Ryan Newman stops for some tires Saturday at Lowe's Motor Speedway. Credit:
Autostock
"It knocked the toe out real bad, and I just couldn't turn it. It was just a
disappointing day for the Alltel Dodge.

"We had a fast car. We got back on the last pit stop, but we had a car that
would have won. We were watching the 48. He was loose and we were a little bit
tight. We were getting better as it went. It was just a typical night at Lowe's
Motor Speedway.

"Kasey was really good tonight, too. All we can do is try our best in these next
five races and see where we end up. We've had a lot of stupid stuff happen to
us."
10. Jeremy Mayfield, minus-257

Finished 30th after involvement in an accident on Lap 223.

"I guess it just wasn't supposed to be our night. We got caught in the pits when
the yellow came out, and then we slipped in some oil. What are you going to do?
We had a good car. If everything had gone right, we'd be out there running for
the win with Kasey [Kahne]. His car was really strong, and he ran a good race.
It looked like he was going to get his first win tonight."

CONCORD, N.C. -- Oftentimes, it seems some athletes and teams must overcome
heartbreak before they're astrologically cleared to achieve excellence.

For what seems the umpteenth time this Nextel Cup season, Kahne had a car
capable of going to Victory Lane, but this time it appeared he was a lock.

Ask his competitors, they'll tell you.

"The 9 car was the class of the field," said eventual winner Jimmie Johnson.

Third-place finisher Dale Earnhardt Jr.: "The 9 car was so fast I almost
pretended like I was leading the race. Trying to catch him, I just burned my car
up."

It's understandable. Kahne was seven seconds ahead.

That's roughly an entire straightaway.

Overall, the 24-year-old rookie led four times for a race-high 207 laps. But on
lap 268 the stars were once again knocked out of whack. Kahne was the race
leader on that lap when the right front tire blew on his Mopar Dodge, sending
him hard into the outside wall.

"When he had that problem everybody else was back in it," Junior said. "Without
that problem I'll assume he'd have gone to Victory Lane pretty easily."

He wouldn't get the chance to fulfill that promise. His night was over.

"That was the best car I've had in my life," Kahne said, somehow able to grin
widely. "I don't know what happened. The front end fell down and we had a bad
vibration before that.

"We got a vibration and something broke before we were going to pit. The front
end just fell down and went into the wall. I really don't know what happened."

One thing that most certainly happened was Kahne's most recent bid at victory
was once again foiled by misfortune.

"We had a great car but we just haven't been able to have the cards our way,"
crew chief Tommy Baldwin said. "We should have won several races by now, but it
is what it is and we'll just have to go on down the road.

"I just told Kasey that we were all going to learn from this. This was something
that was out of our control, but we've gone through a lot of that this year."

CONCORD, N.C. -- Mark Martin has built a career on staying level-headed and
even-tempered. Rarely do his emotions spill over, even in the most trying
circumstances.

But Saturday night, after a maddening UAW-GM Quality 500 at Lowe's Motor
Speedway, Martin's anger flashed. His damaged No. 6 Ford crawled through the
garage area after the race, and Martin looked for his transporter.

But with people milling around, Martin couldn't see his crew members. Besides,
the No. 6 crew wasn't exactly making a supreme effort, since they were
irritated, too.

Martin finally spotted his crew, gunning the engine in frustration. The engine
died, so Martin decided to abandon ship, waving his arms at whoever was
watching.

He consented to an interview with NBC, and he could barely contain his anger.

"It would be hard for me to believe that some of these guys could pass a
driver's test," Martin said. "I can't believe they've got driver's licenses."

Martin was upset at Jimmy Spencer and Brendan Gaughan, who wrecked off Turn 4 as
Martin and Ryan Newman were bearing down on them on Lap 313. Martin and Newman
were battling for second behind Jimmie Johnson, but there wasn't enough room for
four cars, especially when two were spinning.

Martin ran into Spencer, while Newman was pinched in the outside wall. The
damage dropped both Chase for the Nextel Cup contenders to also-rans in Saturday
night's race, and both had to limp to the checkered flag. Martin ended up 13th,
while Newman was 14th, the last car on the lead lap.

Martin and Newman both had fast cars, each leading the race three times --
Martin for 32 laps, Newman for 31.

Newman was as upset as Martin, but their wrath may have been misdirected.
Gaughan had a flat tire in Turn 3 and was trying to slow down. Gaughan wouldn't
have made it to pit road, but he was trying to stay out of the way.
Ryan Newman finished 14th Saturday at Lowe's Motor Speedway. Credit: Autostock
"The right-front was going flat, and I called (the pits) as I entered Turn 3 and
said, 'Uh, oh, we've got a tire going down,'" Gaughan said. "I slowed down a
bunch and got to the very bottom. I knew I wasn't going to be able to make the
pits. I was going to have to limp around for a lap.

"Those dog-leg straightaways are tough to limp around on. I don't know where the
guys were behind us. I tried on stay on the very bottom of the racetrack, and we
got tagged.

"Don't know if it was my fault or not. Seemed like a racing deal, and we just
happened to be in the middle of it. Sorry to Jimmy. I'll go down and find him
and tell him what happened."

Gaughan said he couldn't wave to anyone behind him because he was in the turn.
He said he was about to wave when Spencer drilled him.

That was little consolation to Newman.

"It knocked the tow out real bad, and I just couldn't turn it," Newman said. "It
was just a disappointing day. We had a fast car. We got back on the last pit
stop, but we had a car that would have won. We were catching the 48. He was
loose, and we were a little bit tight. We were getting better as it went."

"All we can do is try our best in these next five races and see where we end
up," Newman said. "We've had a lot of stupid stuff happen to us."

Newman dropped to ninth in the Nextel Cup points standings, 271 out of the lead.
His championship hopes were slim anyway, but Martin still had a fighting chance.

But after Saturday's trouble, Martin dropped to 186 points behind teammate Kurt
Busch. The 2004 Nextel Cup might now be out of reach.

"I don't know," Martin said. "We did everything we could do here. We gave it a
great run for the whole team. I can't help it. I can't help it."

CONCORD, N.C. -- Jimmie Johnson's victory Saturday night in the UAW-GM Quality
500 at Lowe's Motor Speedway clinched the manufacturers' championship for
Chevrolet.

Chevrolet has won 18 of the 31 races and has led more than half of the laps run
in 2004.

The championship is Chevrolet's 28th and 24th in the modern era, which began in
1972.

"Being a Chevrolet dealer and racing Chevrolets all the way, GM in Detroit puts
an awful lot of emphasis on winning that deal," said Rick Hendrick, Johnson's
car owner. "To clinch it tonight with us doing it is really special for me."

Hendrick drivers have won 10 races this year, with Johnson and Jeff Gordon
winning five apiece.

When Johnson was 16, Chevrolet signed him to its off-road program and helped
guide his career through ASA, the Busch Series and finally to Nextel Cup.

"Last year I think I won their 400th win, and that was very special for me with
the history I've had with Chevrolet," Johnson said. "And then to be able to win
the race and clinch the manufacturers' cup for them this year is just really
cool for me."
Nemechek backs up victory with fifth-place finish

A week after a good call by crew chief Ryan Pemberton helped Joe Nemechek win
last weekend at Kansas Speedway, another good call helped Nemechek finish fifth
at Lowe's Motor Speedway.

Under the race's penultimate caution, Pemberton decided to change only two
tires, while all the other leaders changed four. Nemechek was 13th before the
caution but got the lead with Pemberton's call.

"This was Ryan Pemberton's day here," Nemechek said. "He made a good call and we
got two tires there and track position. We were stuck back there in about 10th
or 12th spot and we couldn't go. He called two tires. I said, 'Man, I don't know
about that.' But the call was pretty good.

"I was a little bit too tight in the middle to hold off Kurt Busch there. He
raced me hard. He raced me clean. I gave him room and we came home fifth. We'll
take that. It's been two really good weeks."
Another top-10 for McMurray

Only Kurt Busch had scored more points than Jamie McMurray over the last 10
races, as McMurray had finished in the top 10 in eight of those events.

On Saturday night, McMurray had another top-10, finishing eighth in a backup
car.

"We had to unload a backup car and only got about 30 minutes of practice in it,"
McMurray said. "We didn't have a lot of time in it, but it ran really well.

"We kept adjusting on it all night, and we never did get it exactly right. We
fought time and fought loose and fought grip. I would be disappointed, but for a
backup car, I'm pretty happy.

"It's cool getting all these top-10 finishes. I can finish fourth to ninth.
Those guys did a lot of work on this car the last couple of days, so that's
somewhat rewarding."

McMurray, who has 19 top-10s in 2004, held on to 11th in the Nextel Cup
standings, 74 points ahead of 12th-place Dale Jarrett.
Wallace can't avoid Gordon

Rusty Wallace's strong run ended when he ran into a spinning Gordon on Lap 77.
Wallace had moved from his 14th starting spot to run easily in the top 10.

"The spotter yelled, 'Go low,'" Wallace said. "I went low. I thought (Gordon)
was going to slide up the racetrack. Instead he hooked and came flying back
around the bottom and there was nowhere to go. It's just too bad.

"It was flying. I loved the way it handled. It was running perfect. This is just
a crying shame right here. I knew last night when I parked it (early) after
Happy Hour that it was going to be good."
Mears angry with Robby Gordon

Casey Mears had words with Robby Gordon after the race, upset that Gordon ran
into him before a restart.
Casey Mears
"At the end, our only shot to get back for a lucky dog, I don't know what Robby
Gordon was thinking at all," Mears said. "I was second in line to get up front,
and he just decided he deserved to be there more than I did. He just KO'd the
left side of my car. He stood on the gas and just ran right into the side of the
car.

"We put ourselves in that position to begin with, so I guess you can't be too
upset."

Mears struggled most of the night and ended up 20th, three laps down, after
starting third. He said the situation with Gordon was not resolved.

"Absolutely not," Mears said. "I guess he just thought he needed it a lot more
than I did."
Hard hit for Vickers

Brian Vickers tested the SAFER barrier on the front straightaway with a wicked
crash on Lap 24. Vickers lost control while battling Robby Gordon, swerved and
slammed the outside wall.
Brian Vickers said he thought maybe he shouldn't have tried to save his car in
this wreck. Credit: Autostock
"I was just trying to save the car, and I probably should have just spun it out
and went through the grass, if I have to do it over again," Vickers said. "But
it didn't work out. It finally caught and went the wrong direction. With the
SAFER barrier there, it really wasn't that hard of a hit. I haven't seen the
replay. It probably looked worse than it was."
Elliott gets four-race deal for 2005

Evernham Motorsports and officials of The Stanley Works announced Saturday that
Stanley Tools would be the primary sponsor of Bill Elliott's Dodge in four
Nextel Cup races next season.

The program also includes Stanley as an associate sponsor on both Jeremy
Mayfield and Kasey Kahne's Dodges for 2005.

"Bill will run at California, Texas, Indy and Charlotte," Evernham said. "Right
now we've got six for sure for Bill, and we're going to be making an
announcement in November for the other two. We're shooting for 10-12, and we're
getting close. My plan is to grow the 91 into a full-time team, probably one
step at a time. I think 12-15 races would be maximum (in 2005).
Tyson to sponsor pit crew awards

Tyson Foods will help determine the best pit crew and the best individuals among
the NASCAR crews in separate contests in 2005. The National Pit Crew
Championship will pit the top 30 Nextel Cup and the top 10 Busch Series
competing against one another in four rounds of pit stops, culminating in the
final May 9.

Additionally, 35 Nextel Cup crew chiefs and car chiefs, a four-judge panel,
Tyson officials and fans via the Internet will vote on the top individual
positions among Nextel Cup crews in the National Motorsports Team of the Year.
CHASE FOR THE NEXTEL CUP
• Inside the Chase• Superstore: Chase driver gear• Official Standings•
Expanded access to the Chase on TrackPass

Fifteen positions will be honored, including crew chief, car chief, engine
builder, front and rear tire changers, etc. Each crew member will be judged on
performance, leadership, teamwork and sportsmanship and will be judged on
individual performance and not on their team's efforts.

The voting will be done in five segments, with the last Nov. 15, when the top
three positions will be finalized.

The pit crew competition will be held at the Pit Instruction and Training
facility in Mooresville, N.C. It will be televised by SPEED Channel.

Unlike the previous pit crew competition, which was held in Rockingham, N.C.,
each pit crew won't use its own cars. Instead, it will use its own air guns and
jacks on four identically prepared cars provided by the facility.

The first stage will feature 10 rounds of four crews each, with the second four
rounds of three cars, and the third stage two rounds of two cars. The final will
pit the last two crews, with the winner getting $100,000 and second-place
getting $25,000.

Additionally, a bonus round will be held among the top three finishes and a
wild-card team, and if any team can beat the average of the top 10 best stops in
the entire competition by 1.5 seconds, that crew will win $500,000.

2004 Unofficial Driver Standings

After: UAW-GM Quality 500 | Lowe's Motor Speedway | Race 31 of 36Overview

Immediately following each race, NASCAR.com combines the points earned from the
order of finish shown on Live Leaderboard with the previous week's standings to
compile the Unofficial Driver Standings. A driver is eliminated when the maximum
number of points he can accumulate by race 26 is less than either what it would
require to get into the top 10 or stay within 400 points of the leader. A driver
can clinch when the minimum number of points he can accumulate by race 26 is
still greater than either what it would require to remain in the top 10 or stay
within 400 points of the leader. All projected scenarios for "clinch" and
"elimination" assume a driver will start all remaining races.Related Information

CONCORD, N.C. -- Nextel Cup Series points leader Kurt Busch and third place Jeff
Gordon were involved in an accident on the first lap of the UAW-GM Quality 500
Saturday when Scott Riggs' missed shift stacked up the field, but both managed
to emerge from the scrum with little more than cosmetic damage.

That said, both drivers were forced to pit more than once to repair front-fender
damage, costing them valuable track position early on.

"We got pretty fortunate down there," said Robbie Loomis, Gordon's crew chief.
"Our biggest concern is temperature. It looks like we got the nose fixed up
well, got the back end fixed up well, too. The DuPont Chevrolet is running well.
We just need some track position."

Riggs qualified fourth, but as the field coursed into Turn 1 on the first lap,
he missed a shift in the No. 10 Chevrolet and injured the engine. The field
stacked up behind him, and Busch and Gordon suffered the cosmetic damage to
their machines.
VIDEO
Near disaster
Busch, Gordon in multi-car wreck on first lap

"This was my fault," Riggs said. "I missed a shift on the initial start and not
only ruined the engine but ruined the whole night and ruined a great shot at a
great car and having a great finish. Nobody's fault but my own."

Dale Earnhardt Jr., second in the Nextel Cup standings, was nearly collected, as
well, but managed to avoid contact. Greg Biffle, however, wasn't so fortunate.

Biffle's Ford was spun head-on into the outside retaining wall and suffered
significant damage to the National Guard Ford.

"Just got hit from behind," Biffle said. "Maybe the guy behind us was a little
overanxious to get back racing again and got in the back of us. We were checking
up on the throttle, and I was on the brakes pretty good.

"The guy probably wasn't expecting it going into the corner like that. It sucks,
but that's racing."

Busch restarted 34th and Gordon 35th, both still on the lead lap. Busch quickly
surged forward - he was 12th by lap 71 -- while Gordon struggled with a
loose-handling racecar until he eventually spun out exiting Turn 4 on Lap 76
while running in 30th position.

Fifth Lowe's win could lift Martin into mainstream of title chaseBy JENNA FRYER,
AP Motorsports Writer

October 16, 2004

AP - Oct 15, 6:42 pm EDT
More Photos
CONCORD, N.C. (AP) -- There are 10 drivers in the race for the Nextel Cup title,
but only three of them are in the thick of the chase.
Mark Martin wants to make it a four-man race, and Lowe's Motor Speedway is the
perfect place for him to get back into it.
Martin heads into the UAW-GM Quality 500 on Saturday night in fifth place in the
standings, 150 points behind leader Kurt Busch. But Martin has four wins at
Lowe's -- three of them in the fall race -- and a victory could close the gap on
the competition.
Asked if he could win Saturday night, Martin didn't blink.
``There's not a doubt in my mind,'' he stated.
This is the way Martin wants to wind down his career -- at the top of his game,
as a championship contender. That's why he chose this weekend to announce that
next year will be his final full season of competition.
document.write('');``One of the reasons for my stepping out at this time is
because I was never really convinced, deep down inside, that I was all that
good,'' Martin said. ``I've fooled a lot of people for a long, long time, and I
don't want to take any chance on getting caught up in something where everybody
figures out that I was sham and I really wasn't as good as the results I got.''
Martin was never a sham at Lowe's, his favorite on the circuit. His last victory
at the track was in 2002, when he broke a 73-race drought by taking the
Coca-Cola 600.
That victory resurrected Martin's career, and pushed him to a second-place
finish in the series standings. But last season he wound up 17th -- the worst
finish in his first 17 years as a full-time competitor.
And in a bittersweet twist, teammate Matt Kenseth won the championship. Of
course Martin was happy for his protege, but it still stung just a bit. After
all, Martin is famous for never having won a title -- finishing second four
times and third another four.
The hard luck seemed to follow Martin into this season, where he lingered around
15th in the Nextel Cup standings for most of the year. But his Roush Racing team
turned it up over the summer, and Martin clawed his way into NASCAR's new
10-race championship playoff system.
Getting there was what finally convinced Martin he'd had enough full-time
racing.
``Chasing for the Cup in 2004 has definitely been the most consuming season of
my life,'' Martin said. ``No one can understand how important it has been for me
to be a contender.''
But his run through the championship hasn't been spectacular -- save for a
second-place finish in Dover three weeks ago.

AP - Oct 15, 6:42 pm EDT
More PhotosHis shot at getting back on track will be challenged Saturday night
by championship contenders Kenseth and Jimmie Johnson, who both ran Friday night
in the Busch race.
The two finished second and third, behind race-winner Mike Bliss, and gained
valuable experience by running under the cooler, night conditions that will be
in effect for the Cup race.
Kenseth wouldn't give up the goods when asked what the Busch experience does for
Cup preparations.
``I can't tell you that because then we wouldn't have an advantage,'' he said.
Kenseth and Johnson both had a shot for the win when Bliss used a gutsy move to
steal the race from them.
As Kenseth and Johnson battled side-by-side when the SpongeBob 300 restarted
with 19 laps to go, Bliss pulled up next to them and coasted by in a three-wide
pass coming out of the fourth turn.
``I didn't care about second, third, fourth, fifth or sixth,'' Bliss said. ``I
wanted to win. I just drove my heart out.''
The victory was special for Bliss, who currently drives for Joe Gibbs Racing in
the Busch series, but isn't sure he'll be back next season.
``I don't want to go anywhere. I love these guys,'' he said, motioning to his
team

CONCORD, N.C. -- What's wrong with Richard Childress Racing?

To Kevin Harvick, driver of RCR's No. 29 Chevrolet, it's simple.

"Our engines are topping the wrong end of the list," Harvick said. "That's about
it. That's about all you need to say."
KEVIN HARVICK
• Driver Page• Gillette Young Guns Challenge• Superstore: Harvick gear!•
Harvick Article Archive

None of the three RCR cars made the Chase for the Nextel Cup, and Harvick is
highest on the points standings at 13th. Robby Gordon is 23rd, while the No. 30
car currently driven by Jeff Burton is 25th in car owners' points.

Rumors have surfaced lately that Childress may make some major changes to his
teams in the near future, but Harvick said he wasn't sure what was going to
happen.

Harvick car chief Kirk Almquist moved to Gordon's team in the same role, while
Kevin Gabard takes over as Harvick's car chief.

"I don't really know what's going on, to tell you the truth," Harvick said.
"We're trying to get everything going back in the right direction. For myself
personally, everything's been a little bit off, equipment-wise. We're trying to
get that straightened out.

"We have one of the best teams in the garage. We just have to have the engines
and bodies and stuff that comes from around it to support it. We'll get it
straightened out."
Harvick will start seventh in Saturday night's UAW-GM Quality 500 at Lowe's
Motor Speedway. Credit: Autostock
Harvick said the team's aerodynamic program is about as good as it can be, and
the car the team has at Lowe's Motor Speedway this weekend is the best it has
had all season.

Harvick starts seventh in Saturday night's UAW-GM Quality 500 and was sixth in
Friday's final practice.

When asked if swapping crews at RCR was possible -- like Childress has tried
before -- Harvick scoffed.

"The day we swap crews is probably the day I (leave)," Harvick said. "(Crew
chief) Todd Berrier has done a great job with everything we've got. He's got to
have the support from everything around him.

"All the guys, they'd lay in front of a truck for me or Todd or anybody
involved. We need to look other places than switching teams."

Drivers to play for charity on 'Family Feud'
LOS ANGELES -- NASCAR and the venerable syndicated program "Family Feud" have
teamed up to create a week of special NASCAR-themed game play.

NASCAR drivers, representing NASCAR's top three competition series, will lead
their NASCAR families -- made up of crew chiefs, pit crew members, family
members, and more -- in the "Survey Says!" game show format to benefit their
favorite charities.

Family Feud "NASCAR Week" is scheduled to air the week of November 8-12.

Participating drivers and the charities they will be playing for are: Ward
Burton for The Ward Burton Wildlife Foundation; Kevin Harvick for Victory
Junction Gang Camp; Bill Lester for Urban Youth Racing School; Sterling Marlin
for Boys and Girls Club of Nashville; Jeremy Mayfield for Victory Junction Gang
Camp; Casey Mears for Target House; Elliott Sadler for Autism Society of
America; and Kenny Wallace for Autism Society of America.

"NASCAR and 'Family Feud' have something in common as one of the nation's most
popular sports and one of its most popular game shows, respectively," stated
Cecile Frot-Coutaz, chief operating officer of FremantleMedia North America,
which produces the program. "It is a real treat to have these incredible drivers
competing for charity, and we are certain their dedicated fans will be cheering
for their favorites all the way through the week."

"NASCAR on 'Family Feud' is guaranteed to be a must watch! The show's format and
popularity provide an excellent platform to showcase our driver's, their crew's,
families' and friend's great personalities and passion to compete. This is a
fresh and unique way to integrate NASCAR and the NASCAR drivers into creative
entertainment programs," said Sarah Nettinga, director, film, television and
music entertainment, NASCAR.

The episodes were taped on Sept. 1, just prior to the NASCAR Nextel Cup Series
Pop Secret 500 at California Speedway in nearby Fontana, Calif. Each of the
drivers will bring four of their racing team "family" members to help them
compete. Each episode of "Family Feud" during NASCAR Week will feature two
NASCAR teams.

because he's a great guy. He's been a fierce competitor. He's won a lot of
races. He's won championships, and he has been a good ambassador for our sport.
On my list of greats, he's right at the top.

CONCORD, N.C. -- ChevronTexaco will return to Chip Ganassi Racing after signing
a "long term contract extension" to sponsor the team, the oil company announced
Friday at Ganassi's new shop.

The exact length of the deal was not disclosed. ChevronTexaco has backed Jamie
McMurray's No. 42 Dodge through its Havoline brand since last year. Texaco has
been in the sport for 17 years, sponsoring drivers like Davey Allison, Ernie
Irvan, Dale Jarrett and Ricky Rudd while at Robert Yates Racing.
Jamie McMurray
The company moved to Ganassi last year and has been pleased with the results.
McMurray won the Raybestos Rookie of the Year Award in 2003 and has seven
top-five and 18 top-10 finishes this season.

"Texaco has a long history of supporting automobile racing and extending our
relationship with Chip Ganassi and Felix Sabates demonstrates a continued
commitment to motorsports and to the Texaco/Havoline brand," ChevronTexaco
president of global lubricants Mark Nelson said.

"The Ganassi team has a clear understanding of ChevronTexaco's business goals
and is a valued partner in our growth and success."

The contract with Ganassi is separate from McMurray. Ganassi recently exercised
an option to extend McMurray's contract one more season.

"It's an honor to drive that black car with the big Texaco Star on the hood with
all its history and with ChevronTexaco being such a great sponsor," McMurray
said. "Our team has continued to get better and better. Chip and Felix give us
the resources to win and I am really looking forward to competing for the
championship next year and for wins every week."
1,200th race for Wood Brothers

Saturday night's UAW-GM Quality 500 will be Wood Brothers Racing's 1,200th race
in the team's 52-year history.
Eddie Wood
"I'm a very small part of it," said co-owner Eddie Wood, son of Glen Wood and
nephew of Leonard Wood, the team's co-founders. "That legacy really belongs to
my dad and the others who were the original guys who started this deal. That's
really where the legend part comes in at, and I'm just proud to be a part of
that, but I'm just a small part.

The team has 96 victories, most with David Pearson in the 1970s, but hasn't won
since 2001. Ricky Rudd, the team's current driver, finished second to Joe
Nemechek last weekend at Kansas Speedway.
Sadler: Gordon the man to beat

Jeff Gordon is third in the Nextel Cup points standings, 79 behind leader Kurt
Busch. But Elliott Sadler, who is 64 behind Gordon in fourth, said the four-time
champion is the man to beat.
Elliott Sadler
"We think we need to outrun the 24 car every single week," Sadler said. "We
think he's the guy that's be the one, when it's all said and done, that's going
to be the guy to beat for this championship.

"If you look at it, the 97 and the 8 have the same amount of championships I
have, and that's zero. We don't really know what's going to happen as the road
unwinds, but the 24 car and Jeff have four championships.

"I think he understands the pressure. He's been in tight championships before
and I think he knows what pitch is coming next, so we think as a team if we can
just try to focus on outrunning the 24 car every week, if we can do that and
gain points on him, we have a great shot of winning this championship."

Gordon isn't so sure he's the favorite, but, yes, the experience of going
through a title chase will help.

"The only role that plays right now is just putting the consistency together
when you have a bad week and putting it behind you and just focusing on the next
weekend," Gordon said. "I think this team is really powerful when it comes to
that."
STP, AutoZone to help Victory Junction

For every bottle of STP sold in November at an AutoZone auto parts store, 50
cents will be donated to the Victory Junction Gang Camp, STP announced Friday.
The donation could be up to $50,000, in honor of STP's 50th anniversary.

STP also unveiled a "pace car" for Sunday's Ride to Victory II, a charity ride
from Lowe's Motor Speedway to the Victory Junction Gang Camp. And STP will
sponsor a "Family Weekend" at the camp, hosting children with chronic or life
threatening illnesses and their families for a weekend.

"We are really excited about this," Kyle Petty said. "I grew up with STP. They
have been a part of our family forever. For STP to step this way with AutoZone,
to allow families to come to the camp is big for us. It's a big step forward for
us."
Domino's, Waltrip to help St. Jude's

Domino's, the official pizza of NASCAR, will sponsor Michael Waltrip's Busch
Series car next weekend at Memphis Motorsports Park and will partner with St.
Jude Children's Research Hospital in an effort to raise money for the hospital.
Michael Waltrip
The hospital held a coloring contest to determine the paint scheme on Waltrip's
No. 99 Chevrolet -- won by 3-year old Stanton, a patient at the hospital, and
his 13-year-old brother Hayden -- and die casts of the car will be sold to raise
money for St. Jude's.

Waltrip helped pick the winner.

"When I saw the one with a giant piece of pepperoni on it, I knew we didn't have
to look any further," Waltrip said.
