CONCORD, N.C. -- ChevronTexaco will return to Chip Ganassi Racing after signing
a "long term contract extension" to sponsor the team, the oil company announced
Friday at Ganassi's new shop.
The exact length of the deal was not disclosed. ChevronTexaco has backed Jamie
McMurray's No. 42 Dodge through its Havoline brand since last year. Texaco has
been in the sport for 17 years, sponsoring drivers like Davey Allison, Ernie
Irvan, Dale Jarrett and Ricky Rudd while at Robert Yates Racing.
Jamie McMurray
The company moved to Ganassi last year and has been pleased with the results.
McMurray won the Raybestos Rookie of the Year Award in 2003 and has seven
top-five and 18 top-10 finishes this season.
"Texaco has a long history of supporting automobile racing and extending our
relationship with Chip Ganassi and Felix Sabates demonstrates a continued
commitment to motorsports and to the Texaco/Havoline brand," ChevronTexaco
president of global lubricants Mark Nelson said.
"The Ganassi team has a clear understanding of ChevronTexaco's business goals
and is a valued partner in our growth and success."
The contract with Ganassi is separate from McMurray. Ganassi recently exercised
an option to extend McMurray's contract one more season.
"It's an honor to drive that black car with the big Texaco Star on the hood with
all its history and with ChevronTexaco being such a great sponsor," McMurray
said. "Our team has continued to get better and better. Chip and Felix give us
the resources to win and I am really looking forward to competing for the
championship next year and for wins every week."
1,200th race for Wood Brothers
Saturday night's UAW-GM Quality 500 will be Wood Brothers Racing's 1,200th race
in the team's 52-year history.
Eddie Wood
"I'm a very small part of it," said co-owner Eddie Wood, son of Glen Wood and
nephew of Leonard Wood, the team's co-founders. "That legacy really belongs to
my dad and the others who were the original guys who started this deal. That's
really where the legend part comes in at, and I'm just proud to be a part of
that, but I'm just a small part.
The team has 96 victories, most with David Pearson in the 1970s, but hasn't won
since 2001. Ricky Rudd, the team's current driver, finished second to Joe
Nemechek last weekend at Kansas Speedway.
Sadler: Gordon the man to beat
Jeff Gordon is third in the Nextel Cup points standings, 79 behind leader Kurt
Busch. But Elliott Sadler, who is 64 behind Gordon in fourth, said the four-time
champion is the man to beat.
Elliott Sadler
"We think we need to outrun the 24 car every single week," Sadler said. "We
think he's the guy that's be the one, when it's all said and done, that's going
to be the guy to beat for this championship.
"If you look at it, the 97 and the 8 have the same amount of championships I
have, and that's zero. We don't really know what's going to happen as the road
unwinds, but the 24 car and Jeff have four championships.
"I think he understands the pressure. He's been in tight championships before
and I think he knows what pitch is coming next, so we think as a team if we can
just try to focus on outrunning the 24 car every week, if we can do that and
gain points on him, we have a great shot of winning this championship."
Gordon isn't so sure he's the favorite, but, yes, the experience of going
through a title chase will help.
"The only role that plays right now is just putting the consistency together
when you have a bad week and putting it behind you and just focusing on the next
weekend," Gordon said. "I think this team is really powerful when it comes to
that."

Domino's, Waltrip to help St. Jude's
Domino's, the official pizza of NASCAR, will sponsor Michael Waltrip's Busch
Series car next weekend at Memphis Motorsports Park and will partner with St.
Jude Children's Research Hospital in an effort to raise money for the hospital.
Michael Waltrip
The hospital held a coloring contest to determine the paint scheme on Waltrip's
No. 99 Chevrolet -- won by 3-year old Stanton, a patient at the hospital, and
his 13-year-old brother Hayden -- and die casts of the car will be sold to raise
money for St. Jude's.
Waltrip helped pick the winner.
"When I saw the one with a giant piece of pepperoni on it, I knew we didn't have
to look any further," Waltrip said.
