Most of the details have finally been worked out, so we'll go ahead and get the
word out about the revival of the "Sometimes Annual New Mexico Ski Cup"
cross-country ski race on January 24th and 25th. It's being promoted and
sponsored by the Enchanted Forest XC Ski Area in Red River. They'll be posting
the flier and waiver on their site soon, so check there directly (probably
tomorrow or the next day...they just got a bunch of new snow that they have to
go pack down). www.enchantedforestxc.com
There will be a classical (traditional style) race on Saturday, and a freestyle
(skate) race on Sunday. We're also posting the information on the SWNSC website
now, so check there either tonight or tomorrow for the flier and waiver of
liability. www.swnordicski.org
Also, don't forget about the Chama Chile Ski Classic on January 18. This is an
awesome event with a great course. It's going back to the original classical
style and is listed as a 10km event, but is usually somewhat longer. Part of
the course is on the old Cumbres & Toltec railroad grade. See: www.chamaski.com
for more information on that.
Please help spread the word on these unique New Mexico events, and get out there
and ski!

Hi all,
I posted a quick trail report on the blog:
http://swnordicski.blogspot.com/
Also, please remember to renew your memberships. We've been busy getting all of
the club assets in order (both hard and liquid) and although we are looking good
"in the field," it has been a little bit of a strain on the meager bank account.
If you ever wonder where the money goes or what the finances are, please feel
free to not ask questions...just kidding. This isn't the Bush administration =)
You can ask us any questions at board@...
...and, you are always invited to board meetings where we always have financial
reports by our very own economic guru and club treasurer, Paul Graham.
OK, think snow and go ski!

6" new up there to ski on today, over a consolidated 6" snowfall from the
previous day made
for very nice ski touring, and virtually rock free.
No grooming as of yet, but the guys have been busy the past two weeks cutting
and moving
all the fallen trees on the trail, so today's skiing didn't involve struggling
over trees! Many
trees had fallen last month, so we owe a big thanks to the crew for dealing with
it.
I believe grooming will begin this week.
If you didnt already get this...

Hi all,
This is all the word from Dave Wykoff and John Bernardin (read below), who got
up there last evening to get in the first packing job in anticipation for more
snow (hopefully on its way).
There are 3 trees down, one really big one about 1/2 of the way from point J to
the meadow. The other one is at point O. What few groomers we have at the
moment can probably take care of them, but there are some other items that we
could use a little help with:
1. signs
2. aspen shoots on the upper trail near the meadow and down
3. stringing up fencing at the rock below point J
If anyone is willing and able, we could use some help. These are always
one-time early season chores that need 'tending to and are quite important for
the rest of the season.
We're EXTREMELY short on grooming staff too -- much more than the past couple of
seasons. If anyone wants to help pitch in, please let us know!!!! We'll work
it in teams at first so that you won't have to be alone out there.
Please let us know. The Groomers' email listserv address is:
groomers@...
Good skiing near home is priceless. It won't be long. Please help out if you
can!
---------- Forwarded Message ----------
Dave,
We should also hang the snow fence at the big rock during the chain
saw work. The nice aspect of this is that we can haul everything in
on the snow cat and don't have to carry it. I could work on this
tomorrow late afternoon, but we really need at least 3 or 4 of us to
do this work.
Dave and I brought down 4 empty gas cans. There are at least 5 more
empties up there. Please grab a few when you go up there and bring
them down and fill em up, even if you are only going up to ski or
hike. It really helps out the grooming team to keep up the supply of gas.
We should also put up all of the signs. Can someone volunteer to do
that task that may not want to chain saw or hang fence?
By the way, the skiing is less than marginal, but there may be more
snow by the weekend.

Hey, thanks to everyone who turned out for the workday early Saturday. We got a
lot done with that group. Everyone busted their hind-end and the hard stuff was
accomplished (i.e. the front hill shade fence).
Dina took some photos and we made a new place on Google to share our ski club
photos, rather than always having to post them on the blog, although a few good
blog photos always spice up the stories.
See: http://picasaweb.google.com/SWNSKIboard
for the photos.
We have a bit more work to get done on the shed (insulation and drywall) and a
couple more trees down on the lower road. We got the aspen shoots cut up to
point 'J', but the whole upper trail from J to the meadow still needs to be hit.
We'll have some quick work parties this week and maybe one more next weekend if
you're interested...

Ooops, I just read my original email and I did NOT mean "cut down trees," but
rather 'cut trees that have already fallen down'...as in to clear them from the
trail. Sorry about that. We don't make it a habit of cutting down trees.

I just want to put a bug in your ears.
When there is snow in the Valles Grande, it is perfect for a XC race
course. It's better than the Salt Lake Olympics XC site (Soldier
Hollow - I use to ski there).
I believe the Valles Caldera staff would love to work with the club to
setup an event.

The storms kept at bay but produced a heavy, humid headwind that kept the times

Crested Butte on Snow Camp June 5th-8th
Boulder Nordic Sport, Western State College and the Crested Butte Nordic Center
will host a 4-day on-snow camp for all ages June 5-8, 2008 in Crested Butte,
Colorado. The snow continues to pile up in Crested Butte and we look forward to
5km of Pisten Bully-groomed trails for a fun-filled 4 days of skiing and dryland
training at the peak of spring in the Colorado High Country.
The four-day camp will be led by Western State College Coach Jesse Crandall and
Boulder Nordic Sport owner Nathan Schultz. The camp provides intermediate to
advanced skiers with technique coaching, video analysis, and information about a
wide range of training, technique and other skiing topics. The itinerary
includes skiing in the morning on all three days with afternoon dryland sessions
and evening discussion topics and social events. Skiers will be grouped by
ability with no more than eight skiers per coach to provide the best coaching
experience possible.
Physiology testing is available at Western State College as an add-on to the
camp. VO2 Max and Lactate Testing are available with consultations from the
Western State Exercise Physiologist and tests can be done rollerskiing on WSC’s
new state-of-the-art treadmill, running or cycling.
The fee for the three-day camp is $100 for juniors and $360 for adults, which
includes grooming fees and coaching. Discounted lodging and meal packages will
be available. See bouldernordic.com for details and registration or call

If you got your AXCS publication already you can see Paul, Clay and part of
Denny are in the wine-drinking shot in the lower left on the cover. That's
evening of relay day and we are celebrating because US did well including a 3rd
in the M2 which was the toughest category with the overall fastest relays of the
day being in this age group! Clay got to do leg 2 (classic) of the M2 relay - it
was a very exciting race!
There are also a few pix I took at the races inside, but those are in black
and white and unfortunately really didnt come out. If you would like to see them
in color (along with about 300 more pix from that trip - in chronological order,
labeled with race and age group) check out:
http://picasaweb.google.com/dinapesenson/MWC2008JD
I'm sure Clay will put up more race stories from that trip at some point, but
its getting hard to stay on top of that with Atomic Man coming up and the rest
of warm weather sports kicking in now.

Please make it tomorrow morning at 9am to help clean up all of the Nordic club

track, the hikers off the trails, etc.
We'll also have some trash to pick up (including some dog poop and poop bags --

storage season. It shouldn't take too long. Be sure to bring a Leatherman or
multi-tool, or a pair of needle-nose pliers and a pocket knife.
We'll also do a little grilling, but so far, we only have my one little portable
grill to use. If you have one you can bring up, please do so -- also, bring
your own meat/meatless item to throw on the grill. Dina and I may have a few
extra burgers. So far, we only have the following people signed up to bring the
following things:

Looks like they were designed for rough roads.
I have tried v2's with the brake activated by the lower leg. Found them to be
awkward.
As far as brakes(speed reducers in v2's terminology) I have found the Aero's to
be excellent. I use the Aero 150's with speed reducers for skating and can
descend hills I'd have difficulty skating up.
BTW, kudos to all the nordiques in LA for an outstanding effort on your trails
this year. On all my trips up there(from
tijeras) I found the trails to be in excelent shape.

A friend of mine from France sent me the following web link to roller
skis with a decent brake mechanism (the lack of which has been a
complaint from many a roller skier). Anyway, thought it may be of
interest to club members.

The blog has been updated with some new pictures and a couple of other reports.
Check it out.
Also, please try to come up for the trail cleanup "party" this Saturday, April
5. We can meet at 9am in the parking lot and hike up the front hill and pull
all of the fencing and posts down. It'll take a few trips and some hands, but
we can probably knock it out by noon.
We can also bring up some stuff to BBQ. However, we need some grills or we can
make a little "open pit" and put in some charcoals. The grill thing is probably
better. I have a small portable one and we probably only need one or two more.
I also have a few extra burgers to bring, plus some drinks.
If you can make it and bring something, email me and I'll post on the blog what
people are bringing so that it will help the planning.
See you there.

Grooming/Trail Conditions Report 3/28/08
Get it while the gettin's good. That is the last grooming session of the year. I
took some
pictures to post, but left my camera bag in the trackster and can't download
them. I'm
bummed about that, as they're pretty cool.
I got up there just after 5pm and the snow was corn and pretty soft. Some short
sections
were frozen and not really good, but it mostly groomed out nicely. There's lots
of debris in
some stretches, so be careful. It's especially bad where the big trees fell and
we had to cut
them out and all kinds of sawdust and boughs got buried under the snow...it's
all exposed
now.
I just focused on the upper trails and the meadow from point M to the top. The
lower trail
didn't get any grooming...sorry. It likely has burn out spots anyway. As it was,
the session
took a long time because it hadn't been groomed in a couple of weeks...too bad,
as it
would have been nicer if we had stayed on top of it. The 4 people who groom
regularly ran
out of steam. We need more help...seriously.
You'll need to walk to just before the coat tree at point B. After that, it's
continous, but I
had to shovel three different spots, so be careful. The worst one is just over
the little hill a
hundred meters past the coat tree. Other than that, it's actually pretty good
skiing in some
long stretches.
The trail is groomed for both skating and classic from point B to the top of the
meadow,
and then down the meadow to the entrance at point M. Be careful on the meadow
trail
where it enters the little tree sections. It's very uneven and one spot that is
exposed to the
wind has a very narrow covering.
It was below freezing when I got done, so it was setting up nicely. Should hold
up for the
morning.
Enjoy!
PS -- We will have a NO EXCUSES work day next Saturday, April 5, to pull down
all of the
fencing and wands, and put away the equipment. Please come up and help if you
can. If
we have interest, we can do a nice BBQ afterward and enjoy some burgers, brats,
beer, etc.
It should be fun, actually.
