We (SWNSC) also have a set of 188cm Atomic Beta skate skis (for someone in the
160 to 175 pound range) and a pair of size 45 (10 1/2 to 11) Alpina skate boots
(uses NNN bindings). This equipment was donated by a club member and is to be
used as a fund raiser. The skis are in great shape, the boods are in good
condition.
You can reply to Dina or me directly if you're interested.

Lots of trees came down with the wind. Not a lot of grooming, but trees did get
cleared. If you're up there, please help us pick up some of the residual
debris...there's lots of it.

From the crazy wind storm last night and this morning - John B. reports about a
dozen or so trees down on the trails as of noon today including one very large
one. A lot of chainsaw work required before any grooming can begin. Clay, John
B., Dave, Ken and possibly Denny going up tonight heading up the trail at 5:15pm
on Kermit. If you have a chainsaw and can help please come up and help! If you
dont have a chainsaw but would like to help, you can help a lot by skiing up
there and picking up all the loose debris off the trail - John says there is a
lot of loose stuff down as well!
Do note, that it is important to try to get most of this cleaned up tonight as
there is a good chance of snow tomorrow and it will be a lot harder to pull all
that stuff out once its got snow on it!

Trail Groomed 1/21/08

Mon 1/21, Denny ran Kermit and the six foot Tidd to 'freshen up" the trail. He
left the set
track intact as it looked fine. He hit the main trail, the outer meadow and a
few of the cutoffs
- should be in great shape until the next storm.

The groomer's actual quote on the overall experience that night follows:
"well, it was actually quite an enjoyable experience. full moon. I barely needed
to use the
lights. Of course, I attribute the ease in grooming that I had to pure skill,
expertise, and
grace, yes grace."

Denny will be signing autographs for all interested groomer groupies at a club
event near
you. ;)

Ok, I know you all are loving the email volume from me today, but blame Greg for
this one :).
Actually, the online registration closes on Fri 01/18/08 10:59 PM so you still
have all of tomorrow to register online.
But of course, race day registration, while a huge pain for the race dir, is
always great, so if you must decide last minute take advantage of it!

Clay just posted this..... note that there is no classic track but the whole
trail IS groomed
for skating.

"Trail Report 1/10/08
Hi everyone! Hope you get a chance to get out and ski. There is a lot of new
snow and the
wind has finally quit howling...mostly!

Dave Wykoff had jumped back into the trackster (he groomed yesterday too) and
was out
grooming with the 6-foot Tidd today, including the meadow trails. He had his ski
clothes
under his work close, and was even going to ski a little afterward. What an
animal!

Overall, the trails are in amazing shape. They are still a bit soft, but setting
up quickly. I
don't know if Dave was going to get around to setting a classic track. It's only
fair that he
gets a chance to ski after two grooming sessions in a row.

If anyone is willing to lend a hand, there are a couple of sections of the front
hill fencing
that need to be reset. The first long stretch is leaning so far out that it is
not really doing
much, and then further up, there is a fairly short segment that needs to be
reset with
another bamboo pole and some cord."
                                            Clay

We still need funds to pay off the new snowmobile---if you get up there skiing
this
weekend, pick up a membership form and mailing envelope at the trailhead, and
join the
club.

Or go to http://www.swnordicski.org/ and download forms and give us a financial
boost!

Thanks for helping

Did you realize that the Chama Chile Ski Classic is actually freestyle this
year? The course will be groomed for both classic and skate! There will be 10k
and 5k races as well as a 1k groomed easy flat loop for any non-competitive
skiers to enjoy.

Note that this year this event is on Sun Jan 20th which is the first time it
does not conflict with the Mt. Taylor Quad AND includes events that will prepare
you for it! The course will be open for skis and snowshoes on Monday for those
wanting to get in some quad training!

Make sure to come check it out and support the only non-collegiate nordic ski
race in NM (well, almost in NM :)!
Depending on this year's response they will try to make this a bigger and
bigger production with more events and option for families every year, so please
support the event!

ATTENTION FOREST SERVICE TRAIL USERS

Between mid-January and the beginning of March the Forest Service will
be implementing an old growth ponderosa pine restoration project that
will cause portions of the East Fork Trail and the area north of the
Redondo Campground (on the Jemez Ranger District) to be closed to
cross-country skiing and other recreational uses. This project is the
culmination of a three year partnership effort between the Forest
Service, The Nature Conservancy, Northern Arizona University’s
Ecological Restoration Institute, the University of Montana, and several
local landowners and participants. The purpose of the project is to
optimize old growth ponderosa pine habitat for forest health and
sensitive species such as the Northern goshawk by reducing over dense
areas of small trees. Treatments will be applied by shredding or
masticating trees. There will be no logging and no pre-settlement (trees
estimated to be 130 years or older) trees will be cut.

Treatments will primarily occur over snow between mid-January and March
1st to avoid impacts to soil and minimize disturbance to wildlife
species. The East Fork Trail will be closed on weekdays during this time
period between the East Fork Trailhead and Las Conchas Trailhead. In
some instances, the East Fork Trail may need to be closed on weekends as
well. To find out the status of this trail or more information about the
project, please contact Mike Dechter at the Jemez Ranger District:

Please tell your friends that use these aras. Thank you.

Hi all,
The trail received a lot of new snow. It also got hit by a lot of wind and
drifting in the meadow trails. It's going to be a major booger to groom and
will take a lot of time and work for what amounts to about one or two people.
If you are willing/able, please consider going up and either snowshoeing or
back-country skiing the meadow trails (to the top turnaround) in the same
alignments that we've groomed them thus far this winter. This will make a huge
difference for getting out there with the machines...a HUGE difference.
It's fun, it's a workout, it's a lot of help, and you don't have to drive a
scary grooming machine!
See you out there.

The clinics will be run by members of the SWNSC, including PSIA-certified

The clinics will be broken into different ski ability levels and disciplines
(skate and/or classic styles).
If you're around on Sunday morning, we might be holding a very informal training
time trial (a la Tuesday night time trial format) -- freestyle.
Help us spread the word. We'll be posting more info on the SWNSC website blog.

Last night Clay used the roller and the new snomobile "Cosmo" to pack the big
new snowfall
into the packed base that Ken and Dave established Sunday.

He estimated 15-20" of new snow. Clay also packed the section from the road at
Point "O"
up thru the meadow to Point "M" in snow so deep it was pushing over the top of
the
snomobile as he worked his way up the meadow!

Tonight John B plans to Tidd the entire trail, so look to have at least
skateable conditions by
tomorrow.

I took another look at the trails this evening...this time on my old rock
touring skis. I don't suggest attempting it until it snows again, especially
not if it is warm out. You'll sink straight to the bare ground. It was below
freezing while I skied, so the thin cover could support my weight.
Anyway, see the pics on the blog:

A few of us got up to the shed to start (or finish?) work to prepare for the
up-coming season this past Saturday. We never quite finished the construction
and have just "made do" with the space thus far, so hopefully we'll inch a bit
closer to having that "condominium" that we've been dreaming of.
Pretty much from now until the start of the ski season, we'll have some
projects. If you can find time and are willing, we could use some help. We'll
probably put together some sort of work party each Saturday and/or Sunday.
We'll keep the group posted via email and the website (still being
updated...check it out: www.swnordicski.org). So, sharpen up those chainsaws,
break out the limb choppers, find those old buckets of paint and paint brushes
and come up for some of the fall "fun." The projects are not so big this year,
but we do have quite a number of them.
Here is a list of what we have going on. We can always use donated materials
for any of this:
For the shed:
Equipment shed flooring (need roofing tar, roofing mineral roll ~90mil)
Steps to personnel door (in progress...need concrete, cinder blocks, paving
bricks)
Install external trim boards between rafters, under the eaves
Insulate shed (need insulation) & finish walls (also need drywall or any wall
finishing materials)
Paint exposed trim/wood surfaces (Dave & I already applied water sealer/stain)
For the trail:
Trim branches from trees & brush at sides of trail
Cut aspen shoots in trail (ALWAYS needed!)
Help cut out & move downfall trees (several big ones at the moment)
Move rocks out of the trail
Set out steel fence posts for shade fencing
Install fencing (wait till we see it will snow)
