Hello tclaynordic;
I've been following your grooming reports from up here in WA
state. Over the past few years we have been setting track on a few K.
of ski trails in a summertime USFS campground at the north end of
Lake Cle Elum, Cle Elum RD, Wenatchee NF. We're on the east slope of
the Cascades at about 2500'and get lots of heavy wet snow,(unlike the
Los Alamos area),and this makes set track very welcome. We'd been
using a YTS style 30" tracksetter behind our 1970 SkiDoo Alpine 399.
This year we got a new 6' Tidd-Tech tracksetter from WA State Parks
and just tried it out last week for the first time, hoping to be able
to groom a trail wide enough for skating. We got instantly bogged
down in the heavy wet snow.
I had been in contact with Dave Platts some years ago about your
track-setting efforts and know that you use an older Alpine but
wonder what you use for a track-setter. I'm wondering what your
method is for grooming your trails. Do you have a snowcat or roller
to prep the trails? What sort of track-setter are you using to create
a skate lane?
(I didn't really want to clutter up your message board with this
sort of "techy" inquiry but couldn't find a private e-mail address
for you on the Los Alamos Nordic site. Any advice or pointers you may
be able to provide on avoiding track-setting headaches would be very
much appreciated.)
