Well, despite the lack of grooming (good try Carl and Brett...),
conditions are actually quite good "spring" conditions. At 1:30pm,
the lab weather monitor is recording 46*F, which means it's probably
mid to upper 30's on the trails. Snow depth is still very deep in
most spots, but a few sunny spots, such as the front hill and
point 'A' are showing signs of opening up in the next few days.
I just got back from a noon ski, and it was surprisingly good. The
cool temps (downright chilly up in the meadow) mean the transformed
snow has "corned" up and provides a nice skiing surface. I skied
classic and would say the tracks are reasonably good in most places
(use waxless skis or a corn-snow klister on top of a colder klister
ironed in). Brett and Carl wiped the tracks out during
their "practice" run on the upper leg of TJs to the lower leg of
Dave's Dogleg, but they're present most everywhere else.
The pass that they made did actually smooth the trail out pretty
nicely, and I would say that one more grooming session would do
wonders in getting us through until we close up shop. I would
propose that those of you who haven't given it a shot and want
practice, go up and try it on one of the next three late
afternoons/evenings. Be sure to set a classic track!
