I am in charge of the start/finish line for the Holiday Classic. We
are in need of volunteers for the race. In addition to the start
finish line we need volunteers for traffic control, water stops sign-
ups and other assorted tasks.

Let me know if you are able to volunteer. It is a good idea to
volunteer as a helper for a race to see just what goes into putting on
a race and what the volunteers do so that you can have a great
experience on the course.

Thanks,

Russ

Alyssa says we just meet in front of the center, and take off from there.  I guess get there early, in case parking not allowed, etc.

I was looking for pink shirts while I was running in Chicago so I
could say, "Go Loper", but I did not see any. :-( I guess everyone
was bundled up.

Congrats to all.

It looks as though Jim has set another PR and will probably be going to Boston even though he is 17 seconds over the qualifying time.  I am sure that they will let him into the race.  He still has until the second weekend in February to do better if he wants and I am sure that he can as he continues to improve.
Linda had a great time also.  I don't know how that time ranks for her but it is a very respectible time.

Russ, I too did Chicago. You probably quit looking for Loper results after the first 30,000 finishers.

Karen Capria, who used to be a Loper and now lives in Illinois, also did very well.  She also belongs to our loperspeed_news group.
Congratulations to you all on a fine marathon.

This site allows you to measure your running distances if you don't have a GPS device, or you want to predict your distances on a route you haven't run before.  The link is:
http://www.gmap-pedometer.com.

Use the zoom ladders on the left of the map to adjust it to the size that fits your needs.  Just find your starting point on the Google map, click the "start recording" button, then double-click the waypoints on your running route.  The webpage displays mileage markers along the course, and calculates the total distance.  You can even save your routes and e-mail the link to your friends.

Joe,

Great Job and you are welcome!

Now we can work on getting you under 5 hours!

Make sure that you don't do too much for the next 2 weeks.  I suggest a 2 mile run Wednesday at a very easy pace and 2-4 miles Friday at the same easy pace.  It is even OK if you don't run at all this week but I would at least get in some walking.  No more than 8 miles for the next two Sundays in order to let your muscles repair themselves then you can ramp up to 12, 16, 20, alternation if you want. Or, you can stay at around 10 or 12 and really work hard on the intensity level of your running during the week to build more speed.  Your base is already there so concentrating on more speed is the wisest move in my opinion.

Let me know what your plans are for future races etc.

that record to the data base.)

I know that is seems pretty slow for a lot of you, but it was 49
minutes faster than LA last March.

Russ, thanks for the suggested training program and all the advice.
It really helped.

Weather permitting, I am planning on doing back to back group hikes up San Gorgnio on the 28th and 29th of Oct.

Both will start and end at civil twilight.

The Saturday hike will be 24.7 miles long starting at the Southfork Traihead and going up the Dollar Lake side to the Summit (11.3 miles)(Elevation from 6,880' to 11,500').  The return trip will be down the Dry Lake side and will be 13.1 miles.

The Sunday hike will be from the Vivian Creek Trailhead and will be about 8.6 miles to the summit and 8.6 miles back down.  The trailhead starts at about 6,100'  elevation and the summit is 11,500'.

Both are challenging in different ways.  The Southfork trail is much longer in total miles but is an easier ascent and descent because of the more moderate slope.  The Vivian Creek trail is very challenging in elevation especially from the 0.5 mile mark to about the 2 mile mark and the last 1,500' of elevation to the top.  The assent at the beginning is about a 15% or more grade.  Both trips take about the same amount of time to complete even though the distances are different.

If you are interested in doing either of these hikes or both please respond to this e-mail by Oct. 25th so that I can plan on the permits etc.

We will need to leave the parking lot at the North East corner of Anderson and Stewart in Loma Linda at least 45 minutes before civil twilight.  This means that we need to leave the parking lot on the 28th at 6:35AM. and on the 29th it will be an hour earlier or 5:35AM as we go off Daylight Savings Time that morning.

There is no guarantee as to when we will finish each day as it will be determined by the slowest one in our party.  We will have approximately 12.3 hours of useable daylight.

It will be very cold in the morning and can sometimes get pretty warm during the day.  However at the top it is sure to be on the cool side; 60 to 40 degrees and probably windy.

Bring plenty of water or a purifyer with you.  Also bring plenty of nurishment.  This can be almost as hard on you as doing a marathon as far as nurishment and water are concerned.  The knees can take a beating on the way down especially the Vivian Creek side.

I have done this hike before and run 12 miles the next day but I wouldn't count on being able to do so unless you are an experienced hiker.

Be sure to ask questions before going so as not to be surprised by not being prepaired.

Thanks,

Russ
