Christmas is coming, the goose is getting scared.... haha..

Good Monday Evening dear JoyRiders,

It's scary to read about the accidents and near-accidents along East
Coast Park. I myself had a similar encounter but I shouted at the boys
to KEEP LEFT!!! West Coast feels much safer on weekends, although the
scenary isn't great at all for the boys... only metal cranes and
lorries.. Haha...

For ADVANCE newbies who have been cycling for some time, and feeling a
little uneasy at the joints at times, this might be something useful
to chew on : http://sportsmedicine.about.com/cs/sport/a/bikefit.htm

Once again, we invite our ADVANCE NEWBIES to ride with us this
Wednesday! I am enjoying the cool night but I hope Wed morning will be
a clear!

Our route :

The 34km Mandai Loop. Roll off at 5am together with the fast group,
then regroup at Mandai Shell.
The fast group will zoom towards Clementi -> Keppel -> Raffles Place
and maybe breakfast at the Amoy Juice Bar. If you are FAST and can
keep up with the front pack, feel free to roll on with them.

The Advance Newbies group (that's you!) will go back to Longhouse via
Dunearn Road -> Adam Road, or go home whichever way you wish.

First timers, if you need directions, please let Donna, YKK or me
know in advance which way you wanna head. Don't want you to get lost!

Average Speed maybe around 25 - 29km/h

This is the link of the route :

More on the website :

See you on Wednesday! 5AM!

Please check weather before you leave :

Compulsory items : helmet, front and rear lights

I wonder if anyone call it Act of God?

A couple of years ago, I was cycling along a narrow park connector after Xilin Avenue towards Tanah Merah, when I saw an Indian man without helmet cycling his utility bike in a zig-zag manner towards me along the same park connector. I stopped cycling and dismounted for him to pass by. He crashed almost head-on into my bike as he could not cycle in a straight line, and he did not know how to brake

So lucky, he had a metal front basket for crumple-zone, and I had withdrawn my ungloved right hand in time. The damage to my bike was torn off-side bar wrap and a few scratches on the off-side brake lever (thanks to his crumple-zone that did worked well enough:- crumpled). He fell but did not appear injured although he was not wearing any seat-belt. Perhaps I was a little too obese to fall from that impact, then

He looked sheepish and remained silence when asked him what he was trying to do

So lesson learned: due personnal diligence to stop my bike early may not be quite enough to avoid accident/collision

Compensation: I was too surprised by the accident to realised that

The East Coast Park is where I learned that my bike can brake to a screeching stop, when two girls trying tandem cycling on their own used a pedestrain crossing for their cycling route. Somehow it is common that cyclists/pedestrians/skaters U-turn/stop suddenly along the way cycling track

Many years back someone organised a car rally requiring participants to drive along East Coast Park Service Road at constant 60km/h on a Sunday while on the lookout for tulips. I refused to participate in that car rally
I believe complacency over safety here at East Coast Park is unbelieveable

I think it is best to avoid cycling inside the park during the weekend afternoons, as that is when they are most crowded. With the high human traffic, the chance of an accident occurring is much greater.

I would like to draw attention to a mishap another cyclist recently encountered inside ecp:

Actually, its always a danger to cycle inside ECP because sunday is usually
family day, which means all sorts of people are out on the track, from grand
parents to small children. And most of the time they dont have that sense of
safety and road sense that we all have. I've avoided cycling inside ECP ever
since I started with Alvin's Eastern Rides and I can only say is during
weekends, Dodging the cars outside the service road is alot safer than cycling
inside the park filled with kids and imbeciles who doesnt have any road sense
and directions at all.

Hi All,

I would want to share this for everyone to take note.

I went cycling with my Scott road bike from Bukit Batok to East coast park yeaterday afternoon. It was quite crowded with many cyclists around and I would always slow down to overtake them safely. But I realised that quite a number of them endanger other cyclists' life. These were the 3 things that I encounted:

1. I was riding straight ahead when I notice a Malay woman riding towards me in the opposite direction. She cut across my direction so suddenly that stunned me causing me to brake hard.

2. I was overtaking a kid with his mountain bike on the right. He suddenly swerved to his right at the same time and causing me to brake as hard as I can and my bike skidded causing me to almost lost my balance.

3. It was going to rain. So I grabbed my bike and tried to cycle home. I realised that the place was still as crowded. I was slowly overtaking a kid with mountain bike on my right. As I past him, he swerved to his right so suddenly and crash into me and both us fall together on our right. Neither me nor the kid was injured but only a slight cut on my finger. My drop bar had bent out of shape, front brakes mis-aligned and handle grip torned off. The rest are still ok. I can't cycle any further but to detach my both wheels and took a cab home.

Ever since this year whenever I cycle to East coast park, unusual things happened such as caught in the rain, punctured tyre or even other things. After all these incidents, I would take alternative route which is the East coast service road. I would advise road bikers not to cycle in any crowded places especially with kids around. I have also seen before that a kid almost collided with an ang-moh road biker in the opposite direction.

I believe so, seeing that a great number of the group are runners or
triathletes as well as cyclists. At the same time, that stretch of road is none
too safe for
cyclists due to the number of illegally-parked cars which protrude
into the road proper. Cyclists will do well to maintain a high level
of alertness and to practise situational awareness when cycling along
that stretch of the road.

But I still cannot figure out the main objective..
Must be very tiring on the legs?
If can get to aero position but with small wheels?

Guess I'm still new to cycling;)

Perhaps you might want to consider installing a Shimano DA electronic shifter at the rear with the wireless control on the handlebar, therefore no wires needed ? That will make it non-singlespeed !

Hmm... this is what I call a "Fun Bike".. as it is not fast... and if I do get to do the OCBC "race" next year... this will be the bike I am using... just for the FUN of it!..

and.. the drop bar is there so that I no longer sit up right!.... *notice the saddle is higher than the drop bar!... would be quite difficult to sit upright in this setting! :-)

Not really.  It’s 36km if you are early and do a detour to Newton Circus before returning LH.

That is, if you go via the Sembawang Hill route.  Otherwise that will be 35km if you go by Upper Seletar reservoir way.

Hmm... it seems to be the same route, except its 34km on Wednesday and 33km on Saturday (perhaps 1km got worn out in between?)
