Hi all
I'm getting a reasonable number of players signing up individually,
though unless the floodgates open in the next few days, it looks like
only one pickup team. We'll have to argue about whether they want to
play north or south or both!
But no girls signing up yet. Are there any women out there still
without teams, or are all the teams so desperate for women players that
they all get snapped up?
Or are you just being put off by the implications of playing for the
"pickup" team? :-)
Seven days to go (technically, anyway!) until the entry deadline...

Hi again
Regarding team entries for summer league - Thought I should mention
that if you need to, you can always choose a home ground of "both".
I'll then attempt to schedule you with a reasonably even number of
games north and south of the river. Could be handy if your players are
split either side.
Get entering folks. Not long to go. Any problems, drop me a line.
BTW, the website now has final placings (including spirit scores) from
last year in the Archives section.

Hi all
The London Summer League website is back in action, at it's new
location of:
http://www.londonultimate.com
All the info on how to come and play in the league is up there. Note
that you can enter as a team or an individual player this year.
There's only a week or two before things kick off, so get your skates
on.
Cheers

Hey everyone - we're looking for additional players for our team -
last year was the first time most of us had playeed, so beginners are
welcome!
We'll be a clapham based team and we'll usually practice down there
too. If you're interested send a message to
whatsastack@yahoogroups.com

Hi folks
Okay, here we go with this year's summer league. The story is much the
same as previous years. The essential details are as follows:
2003 Summer League essential info
============================
1) Games take place at Clapham Common and Finsbury Park on Wednesday
and Thursday evenings, beginning June 18th and running thru to the end
of August. (Regents Park is closed this year while they rebuild the
pitches). Pitches will as usual be fully marked, but bring your own
cones.
2) It's co-ed, with a 5-2 split.
3) You'll play no more than one game a week. Most likely you'll have a
couple of weeks with no game.
4) You get to nominate a "home" ground of either Finsbury Park or
Clapham Common, whichever's most convenient for the majority of your
team. I will then endeavour to schedule most of your games for that
venue. However it is inevitable that you will have occasional games at
the other site.
5) I can't guarantee that you'll always be playing either a Wednesday
or Thursday night. But if one of those nights is especially bad for
your team, let me know and I'll try to schedule most if not all of your
games for the other night.
6) Games should actually *start* at 7.15, so a sensible arrival time is
no later than 7.00pm. It's the team contact's responsibility to make
sure they'll have a full team there in time to play. Showing up to
games with only half a team is bad. Please don't.
7) You can enter as an entire team. Please make sure you have enough
players though - you really need a minimum of five girls and ten guys
on your team to allow for absenteeism. Unless you're absolutely sure
everyone is really going to show up to every game.
8) Alternatively, if you don't have a team, and would rather take a
chance and see what random people you end up playing with, you can
enter as an individual player. We'll then form reasonably even pickup
teams and bribe an experienced player into captaining the team.
9) Rostering - I won't be bothering to take or publish rosters this
year as it's more trouble than it's worth. However, there's no hopping
between teams. Once you have played a league game with one team you
can't play for any other team in the league this year. If anyone fields
a player who has already played for someone else this year they may
forfeit the game.
10) Unfortunately, I'm away from now until the 2nd June. Picked a great
time for a holiday. You're welcome to mail me with any queries, but you
won't get an answer until after that date. Hopefully this mail explains
most of it.
How to enter
==========
TO ENTER A TEAM:
Email me at paulhurt@... with the following information -
* Team name (can be a provisional name for the time being)
* Name of team contact (to be team contact, you *must* have regular
email access)
* Team contact's email address
* Team contact's telephone number, mobile too if possible, and postal
address
* Your favoured home ground, either Finsbury Park or Clapham Common
* Some idea of who's on the team, where you're from, and the general
level of experience, so I can work out seedings and groups. This
information will also appear on the website so that other teams can
work out roughly who you are.
The team fee is likely to be 150 pounds, unless our costs work out
dramatically different from last year. However, don't worry about money
just yet - I'll collect team fees a bit later on.
TO ENTER AS AN INDIVIDUAL PLAYER
Email me at paulhurt@... with the following information -
* Your name
* Male or female (sometimes it's hard to tell from an email!)
* Your preferred home ground (Finsbury or Clapham)
* Rate your playing ability from 1-4:
1-beginner
2-some experience (eg < 2 years)
3-have played a good two or three years or more
4-superstar (you know who you are, no lying!)
* Your contact details (email and telephone numbers only required)
If you enter as an individual and then get picked up by an established
team YOU MUST LET ME KNOW before the entry deadline. I won't be phoning
everyone up to check they're still availble before we pick teams.
Deadline
=======
Deadline for both team and individual entries is 11th June. That's less
than three weeks away so get working on it.
Website
======
Sorry, the website is still down. That's my first order of business
when I get back.
Team packs
=========
A team pack containing schedule, rules and other info will be posted
out to team contacts in the week before the first games. If you happen
to have the team pack from last year, you can use that as a general
guide to how things work. Sorry the website's down, otherwise you could
still download the 2002 team pack. As I say, as soon as I get back...
Hope that makes sense for now. See you soon.

skill level and above - no beginners unfortunately. Be prepared to run hard
if you come along.
starting up thursday April 24th, at 7pm. We'll play on the pitches closest
to Clapham South tube, where the Winter League was held.

what i think they are doing is restricting the organised stuff, such as
softball and other sports that people actually book for and get the markings
made up - since much of that area will be dug up, apparently. we'll still
aim to practice there during the summer but will probably have to shift to a
different part of the park, not sure where yet but maybe the extreme eastern
edge. this area will probably be too busy on weeknights for summer league
though.

Are they going to mount a guard to take footballs off folk at the gates or
is it just 'organised' sport? Those cricket piches are pretty popular, RP
will be losing a fortune...

Well, it's still a good idea. The main issue is finding players willing
to coach (which was a problem last year). Working on it.

Unfortunately, yes. I've had a letter from RP to apologise. I'm looking
for another location in North London, but if all else fails we may have
to play the whole thing at Clapham Common this year.

Hello people,
I have a few questions and i'm hoping someone can enlighten me...
Is there any further news yet on the summer leaugue?
Are you planning on running another two week beginner session?
Are the rumours about Regents Park being closed to sport over the
summer true!?
Many thanks,

Hi all
Thought I should update you on the summer league situation -
understandably, people have been asking.
I'm currently trying to secure pitches. Hoping this won't be a problem,
but until I can confirm that we have them, hold your horses a bit.
Games don't usually start before mid-May at the earliest, because
that's when we have enough light in the evenings. So there's no need to
panic just yet.
The trend is for summer league to get progressively bigger
year-on-year, so I think it's a safe bet that we'll have to schedule
games for both Wednesday and Thursday nights, as last year (though of
course, your team should only have one game a week).
Lastly, the London Ultimate website is moving. We're now a dot-com, i.e.
www.londonultimate.com
which should be easier for people to remember. The dot-org will still
work for the time being, although right now nothing is working because
the transfer of domain registrations is still ongoing. I'll let you
know when the site is back up (and I might even update it!).

I'm moving to London in Late May from Los Angeles.
I'm wondering if there is any good pickup games or if everything is
team oriented in London???? (Where can I go to RUN!!!)
Also, if anyone wants a 38 year old with some speed (some) and who
has been playing for 12 years, I'm available. I can play all the
spots, all the D's and O's...
Thanks,

To echo Roger, "Well done" to everybody involved.
My personal thanks to Roger for getting Winter League up and running in
2001/02, inspiring some of us to start the organisation of the 2002/03
series whilst he was away sunning himself, and then returning to assume the
mantle of head honcho.
Photographs - I confess to abject failure in my self-appointed unofficial
Saturday mission to take team photos of all the Div 1 teams for potential
use on the [lwl-contacts] website. I did, however, succeed in taking several
random photos at the party. I will try to upload them to the [lwl-contacts]
photo archive in the not too distant future.

It's probably time to be thinking about this soon... At least, the London
teams and organisation need to be considering the potential for making it
even more official/organised - we've got pretty good cause for booking
marked pitches with the relevant council(s)?... Offers of assistance
gratefully received...

Clapham 1 win LWL5, beating Clapham 2 in the Division 1 final. Red Dog 2
beat UCL to win Division 2, and Surrey Slingers DC win Division 3:

Clapham Ultimate are the overall LWL 2002/3 winners:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/lwl-contacts/files/standings.htm
This year in the LWL an average of 15 teams have played in 5 events, 22
teams competed in total; it's been much bigger than last year and the
level of competition in all divisions has been very promising and
exciting for Ultimate in this part of the country. The divisional
structure has worked extremely well again - giving teams an incentive to
compete hard at each event to win promotion or avoid relegation,
reducing the number of pointless mismatches and making it easier to get
pitch space. Thanks to Wayne from the Druids, Gareth from Red Dog and
Lewis from Sublime/Druids for all their help with organizing and making
decisions. Thanks to all the participating teams for making it such a
success.
Sorry the dates have moved around a little, it's been regrettable but
unavoidable. As has been said on Britdisc before, hopefully the
organizers of the winter leagues, GB practices, schmindoors, 22 reunions
and the like can be a little more co-ordinated next year to make it
easier for everyone to plan the winter months.
Finally, thanks very much to Princess Layout and Aura for sorting out a
fabulous party on Saturday night. It was really jumping and by the time
we moved onto a club for afters it got really messy. Yesterday was a
write-off. All the girls looked FANTASTIC in their skimpy cocktail
dresses (don't you wish you'd come now!) - I just hope Sarinah didn't
get too cold on the way home in her barely-there little number..
Bring on Tour 0, we can hardly wait!
Cheers,

Ian,
I've cc'ed this message to the lwlcontacts and londonleague mailing
lists, they're the most likely to be able to help. The best I can
suggest is that there may be a practice in North London on Saturday
25th. If not my team Clapham'll be playing by Clapham South tube station
on Sunday 26th at 1pm, but that may be too late 4 you.

An old chestnut, but maybe someone can help.
I think my disc ended up being used to mark a pothole last time at
Division 2 Winter League, and afterwards, I accidently picked up
Vanessa White's disc instead, which look remarkably similar to hers...
It's a glow-in-the-dark, greenish Melbourne Hat 2001 (Black Cat Hat)
disc, and it travelled with me all around Europe, so it has a certain
sentimental attachment.
I'd appreciate any news of the little fella, beer rewards may be
involved.
