Two days left to register for the Webcor KOM this Sun. This is a
fundraiser, and priced as such, but if you view the cause as worthy, the
event should be a lot of fun, and the forecast is currently for sun with
T up to 70F (possible rain Sunday, but the pros can deal with that...).

Dan, it's this Saturday.

And may I remind you all that for those who want to try themselves on
the flats for a change, we have another fundraiser going on on
Saturday as well (yes, unfortunate timing).

The Beat the Clock and Help Beat Cancer Canada Time Trial series kicks
off THIS Saturday!!

Preregistration only! Registration ends on Thursday!!!!!!!!!!

http://www.bikereg.com/events/register.asp?eventid=4151

If you can't come this time due to other committments, you are invited
to the next event, on March 17th!

Thanks,

Carola

Whoops!!!! I have Sunday on my mind.

Sunday folks should see how the big boys climb, by coming up to San
Francisco to watch the Tour of California Prologue, which goes up
Telegraph Hill:

http://www.tourofcalifornia.com/

Of course, on Sat, the Beat the Clock time trial is also highly
recommended. These are a lot of fun. And with a bright and early
7:30am start time, there's plenty of time to ride the time trial and
still make it to San Jose in time for the 10am Webcor/Sierra Rd KOM start.

ummm, ehhh...
God save the queen! (no, wrong announcement)
The king is dead, long live the king! (that's not it either...)
Ship ahoi! (nope, what was I going to say?)
Are you ready to ruuuummmble? (getting closer here...)

Awwwww, sorry, way too distracted these days. Ah, got it!

The first 2007 Beat the Clock Time Trial is THIS Saturday!
Preregistration only -- ends on Thursday!!!
Reserve your spot now:

Yes, we know, unfortunately it's on the same day as the Webcor KOM
event. But if you're insane enough, we can accomodate your start time
and you can probably do both. Just pop us an email when you register.

And as always, we can use all the volunteers we can get!

Thank you,

Dear Low Key Hill Climbers,

Does anyone have a travel bike in a 53cm frame that
Icould borrow in April? We are going to Maui and I
would love to ride some of the great roads on perhaps
Hawaii's nicest island.

A bike with S&S couplers or a Ritchey Break-Away would
be perfect.

I will need it from April 4th and can return it April
15th or 16th.

Thanks,

Another option is to rent a bike when you get there. There are a couple
of places where you can get decent bikes, but I don't remember the
names. The loop around the northern part of the island is nice, and
also the climb up Haleakala (bring warm clothes if you plan to descend).
I'd stay away from the main roads in the middle of the island, though.

I rented a bike from Maui Bicycle Works. It was a nice Specialized
Allez with a triple - very useful on Haleakala.
I walked from the Airport to the shop - 4 blocks -
installed my rack and panniers on the bike, put my stuff in the panniers
and left my suitcase at the store, riding to my hotel
in Kaanapaali. The owner was super helpful.

The loop around the West part of Maui is nice, there are all sorts of
notes on maps about "Rental Cars not allowed on this road" regarding
the road on the North side, but it is in actually a nice road with pavement
comparable to say West Old La Honda - great to ride on but dissuades automobile
traffic. Gorgeous route through cattle grazing land. There is one
small "town" (someone's house) where I was able to buy a lemonade.

There is one spot with a 20%+ downhill gradient that ends in
a tight hairpin, be careful there. With all the weight in my panniers
I barely made the turn. If it looks dodgy you can go straight into
someone's driveway there.

I've rented from http://www.westmauicycles.com/ with good results--they're in Lahaina.  There's also South Maui Bicycles in Kihei if that's more convenient.  Definitely do the rides that Rupert mentions, and also ride out towards Hana--spectacular scenery and the traffic is really not bothersome.

I rented a Trek full carbon fiber with Bontrager components from South Maui Bicycles 808 874 0068..for a week $150 a month ago.. or even better call Donnie at www.gocyclingmaui.com  he has a fleet of Litespeeds kept in perfect condition. Last year I did some of his rides and Shonny Van Landingham and three of her triathlete girlfriends were on the ride..The next day Andy Hampsten and his friend were on the ride to Hana…When Lance goes to Maui he has Donnie set him up with Mountain Bike and Surfboard..…

The good news: the results survived an utterly gruesome B ride in my
sweat-decorated jersey-pocket.

The bad news: I had a really hard time deciphering my sleep-deprived
scribbles... So, if there's anything wrong with your time, it's all my
fault. Jim "the clock" Turner is not to blame -- his times are as
exact as you'd expect from a math professor.

Results ordered according to overall time can be found here:

The results according to category are here:

Thanks everybody for participating and helping out!

For immediate release:

Beat the Clock announces 2nd Canada Time Trial on March 17
**********************************************************

The organizers of the Beat the Clock series invite time trialists and
wannabes to the 2nd Beat the Clock Canada Time Trial on March 17. The
event is open to riders and racers of all genders and ages, with or
without UCI-sanctioned aero equipment and/or license. Preregistration
only!

http://www.bikereg.com/events/register.asp?eventid=4280

The event may be a welcome opportunity for ProTour riders to keep
their legs fresh while waiting for the dispute between ASO and UCI to
settle. In fact, several Discovery Channel riders were spotted
previewing the course during the first Beat the Clock Time Trial on
February 17.

Albeit promoted as a "low key" event, the competition at the first
2007 Canada Time Trial was fierce between the star-studded
participants. BtC News reports live from the scene:

*****************************************************************************

We are here on a glorious day in sunny Northern California, reporting
live from the finish line of the first 2007 Beat the Clock Canada Time
Trial. Although several World and National champions who usually
participate in this event prefer a more vertical challenge this time,
the sizeable field of 49 riders sports no shortage of World, National,
and District champions.

And off he is -- our first starter of the day, Brian Peterson of the
Webcor/Alto Velo squad, rolls off the nonexistent start ramp as the
next rider lines up. The riders start in one-minute increments.

While we are waiting for our first time-check at the finish line, a
few words about this incredible event whose proceeds fully go to the
Lance Armstrong Cancer Foundation. The event is once again
professionally set up by Beat the Clock Director Patt Baenen-Tapscott
and her crew. Jim and Ann Christol formidably handle the registration
of the racers, Chris and Connie Miller and Bob and Sue Walker are
manning the turnaround points on this highly technical straight course
to prevent riders from riding all the way to San Francisco. Debra
Paulsen is doing a fantastic job controlling the crowd which is going
wild now as start official Debbie Merritt is about to send off the
next rider! Mathematician Jim Turner and Theoretical Physicist Carola
Berger will have the difficult task of timing the racers by performing
such complex calculations as addition and subtraction.

And here he comes -- Brian Peterson is blasting through the finish
line, topping the leader-board with a time under 24 minutes. But the
next rider is already approaching, in fact, three riders are coming in
now, Jens Heycke of team "unattached" passing the other two who can
only gasp for air as he moves to the top of the leader-board with an
incredible time of 22:50!

Can anybody top his time?
We will find out when we come back after a short nap, ahem, break.

It is now 8:00am, and none of the male riders could break Jens
Heycke's incredible time of 22:50, as now our first female
participant, Molly Van Houweling of the Metromint team, lines up after
taking a sip from her sponsor's performance enhancing product.

We will find out how she fares when we come back after another nap,
oops, break.

And Molly Van Houweling takes the lead in the womens competition with
a time that is over a minute faster than the 2nd placed woman. Next up
is the Merckx-style category followed by the team events.

...

We are now reporting live from the awards ceremony. Jens Heycke of
Unattached wins the individual men's category as well as 2nd place in
this category, Molly Van Houweling of Metromint smoked the women's
field. Mark Edwards of Team Bike Trip gets first prize in the heavily
contested Merckx category. Peter Tapscott and Matt Morenzoni's time
(Webcor/Alto Velo) in the team event was too fast for any of their
competitors who had to battle increasingly gusty headwinds of 1 mph
and flat tires. Richard and Mary Ellen Allen, representing Genentech,
place first in the heavily contested tandem category (field size 1
tandem).

This is it from the first 2007 Canada Time Trial. Stay tuned for our
live coverage from the second event on March 17! Now back to the studio.

This just in: Beat the Clock fails to test for CCC!
***************************************************

It has come to our attention that the Beat the Clock management failed
to test the participants for the performance enhancing product CCC
(commonly known as Chocolate Chip Cookies). In fact, registration
mastermind Ann Christol was seen handing out several such items at
rider sign-in!

Beat the Clock Director Patt Baenen-Tapscott assures us, however, that
CCC, when taken before a time trial event, certainly does not have a
performance enhancing effect: "A rider who is silly enough to eat one
before the start will have a hard time breathing if some crumbs get
into the wrong pathway." Nevertheless, the Beat the Clock management
promises to have a certified BACA agent [eds. note: Beat the clock
Anti-Cookie Agency] at the next event, testing riders for CCC crumbs.

**********************************************************************

Thanks for reading, participating, and volunteering! Hope to see you
at the next event,

Carola

How many miles must I pedal
Before I can time trial well?
Yes, 'n' how many breaths must I take
Before I run out of air?
Yes, 'n' how much sweat must I drop
Before the turnaround point?
The answer, my friend, is blowin' in the wind,
The answer is blowin' in the wind.

How much more aero must I get
Before I can go faster a bit?
Yes, 'n' how much time does it save
Wearing this helmet of mine?
Yes, 'n' how much money must I spend
To reduce some aero drag?
The answer, my friend, is blowin' in the wind,
The answer is blowin' in the wind.

How many minutes behind
Will I be in the end?
Yes, 'n' how worn out will I be
When the finish line comes?
Yes, 'n' how many Watts do I lack
Compared to all the big shots around?
The answer, my friend, is blowin' in the wind,
The answer is blowin' in the wind
at the next Canada Time Trial on March 17th!

Unfortunately, I will not even be around this time (giving lectures in Florida, no not fun)...thus we need volunteers. If you don't want to race yourself -- any and all help is greatly appreciated as are donations and of course participation!
Remember, all proceeds go to the LAF.

Thanks!

Carola

P.S. Kev, be careful what you're wishing for...I'm not known for my wonderful singing voice. ;-)

Hello Low-Keyers!!

I hope everyone is enjoying this amazing weather!!

I have a totally clean mountain bike that I just posted for sale on

sure I ran it by my Low Key family before letting it go.

Here's Patt's thank you note to all the Beat the Clock volunteers for
helping set an all-time participation record. BtC is going towards a
fundraising record! I completely second her words, esp. since I bailed
this time and went to Florida instead (unfortunately not for a vacation...).

Carola

I would like to thank everyone for helping out with this morning's BTC
effort. It was by far the biggest, most attended, most supported Time
Trial we have done so far.
Jim and Ann handled the registration. When I saw it, the line looked
very similar to a VeloPomo race, lots of people waiting to pay and/or
get those all important waivers signed. Jim also spent a great deal of
time before the event with the pre-registration. Getting that start
list figured out is quite the project.
Luis and Debbie worked non-stop at the start line. Debbie
most graciously got the riders there on time and when riders were late,
figured out how to fit them in. Luis held allot of bikes so people could
have a standing start, something that is common practice in a "real"
time trial. When we got to the teams he took over the little prep
speech, which was good. I think the riders had heard it all from me once
this morning, it must have been quite a treat to hear directions from a
man with such a beautiful accent.
Mary marched up and down the road asking riders to get out of the bike
line. Turns out she is really good at this - not everyone is. Next time
she wants a blow horn!
The finish line folks rocked the boat today. I would say you had your
hands full. Jim has been running the finish line for a few years now,
so with his experience and David's ability to do calculus on his head,
while writing times down, all the times all got posted. After Debbie and
David spent some quality time together after the event sorting things
out, Dan Smith (our TT camp promoter) got to take results with him so
they could review times with the riders immediately. That was so cool!
Debbie, I hope you made your ride!
Sheri, the photos are really incredible. They are posted on the NCNCA
web site. The pics really tell such a nice story and the expressions on
the faces of the riders really show how hard they are riding (even
though this is not a race [right]).
  http://www.ncncaracing.com/reports/2007/0317_beattt.php
The people that are the key to the success of the time trial are the
course marshals. I have the best course marshals in the world. I know
this, not just because you are all really wonderful folks, you are also
on time, bright eyed, interested, willing to get up at the crack of dawn
and most importantly, no one has ever had an incident with a car or a
bike. No cars drivers have ever complained about us being out on the
road. And when you all come back in, the whole area just brightens up. I
love it. I love hearing the stories of the morning and just shooting the
breeze. There is absolutely no way the time trail could be run without
you all. Ted, Sharisse, Kevin, Debra, and Jackie - you all deserve a
huge hand of applause.
Phyllis and Carola bring their own skills to the event. Phyllis is
constantly updating the web site. I ask her to add something, change
something, update something. It is done. End of story. She is incredible.
And then there is Carola- Ms. PR herself. She is also a poet, well now a
published poet, since her work is on the NCNCA web site. She sends the
most well written, cleaver PR promos out, at perfect intervals to a
multitude of lists and now she has us on the NCNCA site. This was not
easy, yet she figured it out.
Thank you all again. I'm still really wound up from this morning.
And the grand total is $4200! That's how much we raised today. That's
allot of money. Really!

Best wishes.
Livestrong.

-----

And now Beat the Clock proudly presents our new bike-advice column
with special guest "Frankie":

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------\
-----

Dear Frankie,
I'm thinking of bidding on the CharBroil grill cause I'm currently
stationed on the North Pole and it's kinda cold up here. How much
would the shipping be?
Frozen up North

Dear Iceman,
unfortunately, the grill is for local pickup only. But we have some
other hot stuff that we can ship. We've also got some cool shades by
Oakley when things heat up too much.
Frankie

Dear Frankie,
what is this Ebay thing and how can I buy the cool Disc with dimples?
This Disc would be perfect for serving salad on my patio because the
dimples match my golf-balls.
Too much Money in the Silicon Valley

Dear Snob,
normally I'd suggest to google Ebay, but chances are, if you've never
heard of Ebay, you've never heard of Google either. You must be left
over from the 18th century... In case you have too much money lying
around the house, donations to poor physics-postdocs, oops, I meant
the Lance Armstrong Foundation are always appreciated!
Frankie

Dear Frankie,
I want to participate in the Canada Time Trial, but I'm new to racing
and I'm a bit worried about field sprints like you see on TV. What do
I need to do to prepare?
Newbie in Redwood City

Dear Clueless,
it is highly unlikely that it comes down to a field sprint in a time
trial, where people start in 1-minute intervals. Nevertheless, I
suggest to get some training wheels so that you don't crash when you
are left in the Mach shock-wave of some champions as they approach the
speed of light.
Frankie

Dear Frankie,
I've heard a rumor that in honor of the currently ongoing Giro a time
trial World Champion will perform the starting ceremony at the Canada
TT in Italian. I don't speak Italian, I don't want to miss my start!
English only in San Jose

Ciao Bello,
non importa che tu non parli l'Italiano. La campionissima del mondo et
della collina delle gatti Karena Bremissima ti guidera con l'aiuto del
fortissimo Luigi. Pronto? Tre, due, uno, vai!
Frankie

Dear Frankie,
I heard that blood-doping is illegal and what with Operation Puerto I
don't dare to use some performance enhancing substances. But I
absolutely want to win the time trial. Any suggestions?
Too lazy to train in San Francisco

Dear Performance-Enhancer,
I've just done some self-research on this topic, and I suggest to get
various bionic implants which appear to be legally approved by the
WADA (or at least not currently banned). A steel-plated arm, for
example, can be very useful in wiping out the competition when they
come anywhere near you or try to pass you. If you lack fast-twitch
fibers you can get a knee ligament transplant from a deceased
sprinter, hoping that the fast-twitch DNA spreads to your thighs.
Frankie

Dear Frankie,
I see I have the option to dedicate my TT ride to a loved one. Can I
dedicate my race to my pet-chameleon Fluffy? Fluffy recently fell
gravely ill because he couldn't match the Greenness of my snazzy new
Go Green outfit.
Very sad in Mountain View

Dear Fluffy-Lover,
we were thinking more about loved persons who have been stricken by
cancer or another horrible disease. But in this case I think the
severity of the situation warrants an exception.

Help -- the Beat(les) the Clock
needs volunteers on May 30th!!!

Help!
Help! We need somebody,
Help! Not just anybody,
Help! You know we need someone, help.

If people were nicer, so much nicer than today,
we wouldn't need so many peoples' help in any way.
But now these days are gone, we have trouble getting insured,
we find we've not changed our minds, we've opened up the doors.

Help us if you can, we're feeling down
and we do appreciate you being around.
Help us get the group uphill safe and sound,
won't you please, please help us.

We try to change lives in oh so many ways,
our insurance seems to vanish in the haze.
Which is why now and here we need to get insured,
and need course marshals like we've never done before.

Help us if you can, we're feeling down
