Hi Andrea:

Here's the link to the invitation:

The invitation mentions munchies, but my memory of last year was that these did not constitute a meal.  Unless you hear otherwise you should probably plan to eat something more substantial before or after.

There's a "tandem" division, with a field for second (or more!) riders.  So tandems can sign up together.

Thanks Dan.

Depending on number of riders our group may be big enough to make 2 teams. It will get decided as event date approaches and people know their schedules best.

Would it be possible to register all as one team for now but then prior to event make changes (and possibly split into two team) depending on the actual head count?

Kevin,

You are an incredible person to come clear across the country to put this thing on, thank you.

I have a suggestion for this year, how about a photo-with-name of each person as they start.  It would be nice to be able to match a face (and bike) with each name on the results sheet.

I like this idea.  A to Bitterwater, Madison sling, B to turnaround and back, another Madison sling, A returns home.

If it's okay with Kevin I'll put in an option for this in the team competition.

Now we need teams to enter, and a tag zone where the handoff or Madison sling has to be completed in.
I would like to do two riders with transfers at each checkpoint and one car driven to the checkpoint by the rider not riding that leg.  Each rider will do the same distance.  Could make for some fast times.  One rider get more climb and the other more power sections.  Each covers the same total distance.  Would a power rider do better on legs one and three or two and four?

I wrote up a description of the problems with MROSD for the forum after the
ride, but I didn't post it because at that time I wasn't sure I would escape
citation, and I didn't want anything used against us. Instead I emailed it to
Dan. Though the wheels of justice turn slowly, I haven't heard anything from
MROSD, so now I think I can post it.

Sat, Nov 20, 2010 at 11:02 PM

> Josh
>
> P.S. What was the deal with the Rangers zooming to the top at the end?

Ah yes, the Rangers.

The Rangers were there because they were concerned that LKHC hadn't a permit for
the ride.

LKHC doesn't usually get a permit, as LKHC considers itself legitimate user of
public roads, and no more in need of a permit than a tractor-trailer. If we did
seek permits from every jurisdiction our rides cross, than we'd probably be
routinely denied permits, because it would be easier and safer for each
bureaucrat to deny a permit than to figure out what a 'hill climb' is.

Back in August, while climbing Umunhum, I spoke to the Ranger who used the
siren. He stated that to do the ride, we'd need a permit. When Dan inveigled
me into being Ride Coordinator, not knowing any better, I applied for a permit
to MROSD, mentioning that I wanted to go past the gate.

This went to the highest levels of MROSD and was denied, because we were a
'timed event', which is an MROSD no-no.

This was confusing to me, because, the OS in MROSD stands for 'Open Space', and
here MROSD was 'closing space' for a legitimate purpose that would be easily
done on that road if they weren't there. Then I looked at MROSD maps, and
found that there are many roads going through MROSD land-- Hwy 9, Page Mill,
Montebello- - that no cycling group ever has to get a permit for. I looked at
the MROSD web site, and couldn't see how Umunhum was different than Montebello.

It turns out that Umunhum road differs from the other roads because MROSD owns
it and 'maintains' it (you say today what a great job they do with that). The
Rangers today informed me of key fact, but you can't find that out on the
website, and it isn't known everywhere in MROSD.

So, when I was turned down for the permit, I made the hopeful assumption that I
was turned down for what definitely is MROSD road, that past the Gate. I sent
an email to the appropriate MROSD representative informing that we were sorry
about the permit being denied, and because of this we would do the ride only
from Venture Church to the Gate. It turns out that my understandable confusion
about MROSD boundaries is shared within MROSD, as the representative evidently
took going to the Gate as being outside MROSD, and emailed me back wishing us
luck on the ride. The MROSD rep's confusion serves to prove my excuse that the
MROSD jurisdiction is obscure, and so how was I to know?

So, the Ranger came in all wroth with indignation that we were doing this ride
without a permit, but when I explained everything he settled down. He's going
to check the email chain, and find that the last correspondence I had was an
MROSD Godspeed. Hopefully they will not give me a ticket or press charges!

LKHC will need deal with MROSD again, most likely, and right now we are probably
about as popular with them as a bedbug. They'll get even with us, in this
world or the next.

I think we should put Hicks/Umunhum on the schedule for 2011, and apply now for
a permit to go to the White Line of Death at least. We'll do everything just
they way they want, and have them turn us down because we are timed. We should
then appeal for a dispensation on the timed event part of it. This way we will
stay positively engaged with MROSD, and they'll be on the defensive because
they are the ones turning us down.

I'm up in Sonoma this weekend and won't be @ San Bruno, but good luck to the
Low-Key crew tomorrow AM @ San Bruno!

The forecast right now looks fairly dicey, with rain tonight giving way to
showers by the end of Saturday. Maybe the race will find a seam in the
precipitation....
