Just a quick follow up.

We'll be donating proceeds to Oxfam's Haiti Relief. They have a superb track
record for providing direct relief. Once I get a $ figure, I'll pass that
along.

Moments ago, I dropped off our extra bananas, cookies, pretzels and water at
InnVision San Jose (dedicated to empowering homeless and at-risk families and
individuals, http://www.innvision.org/). I pass the kisses and hugs along to
all of you. You are all angels.

Well done.

Cool to see so many folks putting the power down yesterday!

If you are using Plus 3, tag your Ride with "LKHC" to be entered to win a vest
like Pat won from last season.

Here are the rides tagged so far:
http://www.plus3network.com/activities/?by_tag=LKHC

If you are new to Plus 3, simply go to www.plus3network.com and enter your ride
onto the site via the form or from a Garmin upload. Our corporate sponsors then
pay a charity for everything you log. ALL FREE.

My ride yesterday earned $2.56 for the Silicon Valley Bicycle Coalition funded
by Chain Reaction Bicycles. That was just for the 100K... The more who log,
the more we raise.

Cheers - Joe Fabris, Plus 3 Product Guy and Low Keyer

Yes -- highly susceptible to the Dick Robinson effect, where those expressing
strong vocal support (ride in the rain? What's wrong with a bit of rain?),
don't show...

Well, first I've been sick with gastrointestinal distress since the race, so haven't worked on results yet.  Next time I've got to bring "real food" with me to eat at the finish: burrito stand was closed due to a miscommunication with the store.

Anyway, I renewed the domain 22 Aug 2009, so I suspect DeltaWebHosting is having server problems today.  My personal domain (djconnel.com) is also down.  I need to check on what the issue is.

BTW, the preferred URL for all things Low-Key is http://lowkeyhillclimbs.com/ , not anything with djconnel.com.  Eventually I'm going to pull all the low-key content from the latter domain.

After being somewhat disabled yesterday from gastrointestinal distress (far
exceeding recommended serving sizes of sponsor product), results are now posted!

Thanks for Cara for helping me enter all the data.

http://megamonster.lowkeyhillclimbs.com/2010/results.html

We were a bit lenient on the 4pm cut-off at the finish, since all riders or
teams made the Bitterwater cut-off time and the wind was clearly a factor riding
the final leg.

Also, I moved team P to the individual ranking, since I count single tandems as
an "individual entry".

Dan

P.S. DeltaWebHosting seems to have recovered from its morning "issues". So the
site should be up.

To fellow LK'ers who rode this Saturday -

Did anyone have the same moooving experience I had with a group of cows
somewhere on the open road? Here's what happened:

A herd of cows turned to face me as I was spotted riding alongside their
pasture. They remained motionless for several seconds, then one (or maybe
several) must have thought I was going to feed them because they began trotting,
then running towards me as I passed alongside. Once they got near the fence by
the roadside they did a 90 degree turn and followed beside me for about 100
yards before deciding I wasn't going to feed them after all. I thought about
tossing them a PowerBar but knew I'd need it later. Plus it would have been too
much work to split it evenly.

I don't think I broke the "no draft" rule but will leave the final ruling to the
mercy of the race officials. ;)

Thanks to Kevin, Dan, and everyone else for putting on such a great event. The
cows were very inspirational and gave me the boost I needed to finish the race.
Nice work!

Somewhere in the zombie zone psychological range between about 30 to 20 miles from the finish I recall a slope off the right side of the road down to a pasture ~20? feet below with a bunch of cows staring up at me.  Their bodies were oriented at the same angle to the road, and if I wasn't delusional then they really were staring at me and turning their bodies watching as I went by.  I thought about taking out my phone to snap a picture of this surreal cowular configuration, but chose not to because it would cost time.
Maybe they were just mooing me on.
Maybe they were proving a point that you don't need a cowbell to cheer on a bike racer if you're a cow to begin with.
Could these have been the same cows?

Hello LK'ers -

A few people have asked where I saw the peloton of hungry cows.  Although I can't be certain, I think it was somewhere between Bitterwater and the turn around checkpoint.  I know for sure I was heading south at the time.  I like what Barry said - who needs a cowbell to cheer at a bike race when you're a cow!  Come to think of it, I was going pretty slow.  I think they were telling me to keep moooving.

Alright, sorry,.  Enough of the silly cow jokes!

Yes, We had the same experience with the cows as Bruce's group, but they were already worn out from chasing Bruce and Janet, etc.

Oh, and thanks for the info on the wind noise, Bruce. I had thought all along that it was coming from my teammates. But I guess it could also have emanated (e-moo-nated?) from Dan the OD man.

Thanks to everyone who made the MegaMonsterEnduro happen this year!

The inaugural MegaMonsterEnduro in 1996 marked the formation of Team Bikeaholics
and spawned the friendly rivalry with Team TNT. In commemoration of this
wonderfully crazy event, Team Bikeaholics members Lisa and Ken rode the 100 mi
course together. While Ken was hoping to break below 6 hrs and beat his
individual time from 2008, he patiently rode with Team Captain Lisa (me), who
bonked somewhere between the 60-70 mi point. After forcing down several oreo
cookies at the Bitterwater control, the team blasted back to the finish in a
tight aerodynamic paceline (not the usual Bikeaholic 4-abreast "paceline"). A
fun time was had by all, but I was very tired. Once I made it home to Belmont,
I threw off my shoes and hopped straight into bed for a 1 hr nap, bike clothes
and all! Now I know how those Olympic cross country skiers feel at the end of a
race!

Looking forward to 2011!

100 milers this year tended to be, on average, 8.0% slower on the return than on
the outbound leg. In 2008, it was about 5.1%. In each case, there were a group
of riders and teams who managed to keep very even splits, but others who tended
to fade in the second half.

http://djconnel.blogspot.com/2010/02/megamonster-enduro-2008-2010-pacing.html

Curious if the trend will be affected by the presence of Hammer products at the
rest stops in 2011. You could argue that this year people had them at the
beginning, so benefited in the first half, but then ran out, so failed to have
the benefit in the second half, leading to the greater average drop in pace. Or
it could just be random variation.

Speaking for myself, my fade was very much influenced by not packing
enough electrolyte tablets. Calf cramps galore. Having product
available at the rest stops would have definitely helped.

Dan,

I thought the wind on the return was a little stiffer this year, but it is hard to be precise about two years back.  Maybe there is weather site that has historical data.  I skewed the data a little in the opposite direction because I flatted on the outbound leg.

Curious if the trend will be affected by the presence of Hammer products at the rest stops in 2011. You could argue that this year people had them at the beginning, so benefited in the first half, but then ran out, so failed to have the benefit in the second half, leading to the greater average drop in pace. Or it could just be random variation.

I can one-better Gary; I flatted twice on the outbound leg, though it turned out that the second was the continued presence of the tiny little sucker that punctured me the first time, which retreated back into the rubber and sat there quietly waiting to pounce a second time. (I only found it when I got home and my tire was soft and I could look under intense light.) With no spare tubes left, and twenty minutes down (no sympathy for Cadel Evans from me!) I turned around at the 100K point. I gather there were a lot of flats on the southbound leg.

Still a great outing though, and I'll be back next year with my tubeless tires!

Dan,

I thought the wind on the return was a little stiffer this year, but it is hard to be precise about two years back.  Maybe there is weather site that has historical data.  I skewed the data a little in the opposite direction because I flatted on the outbound leg.
