Mama always said life was like a box a chocolates, never know what
you're gonna get.
This time you're gonna get 2 Beat the Clock events on June 21.

Supercallifragilisticexpialidocious!
Hell, yeah!

Are we there yet? are we there yet? are we there yet?
Canada Road, Woodside. 7am. Time trial. June 21.

You Wanna Play Rough?...Yeah?...Well Say Hello To My Little Friend!!
Core and More! MOTIO Studio, Redwood City, 4pm. June 21.
Pilates-yoga-core-mat-whatever class. Read the flyer.
http://www.scaledup.com/beattheclock/

Fifty bucks, Grandpa. For seventy-five, the wife can watch.
No, it's 24 bucks for the TT, 20 for the Pilates-yoga-core-mat class.

You jump, I jump remember?
Just shut up and pedal.

What we do in life echoes in eternity.
So do something good for your body and for the Lance Armstrong Foundation.

Donkey, you HAVE the right to remain silent. What you lack, is the capacity.
Nobody lacks the capacity for Beat the Clock. The events are open to
everybody, from kid to grandpa/ma. Not sure about donkeys, though.

Jim. Can't you keep your shirt on? You're scaring the chicks away.
For the TT it's better if you wear a skinsuit. For the mat class, you'd
have to ask instructors Owen Grady and Mary Lachapelle.

Blue, how come there's no ice in my lemonade?
No idea. Everything else is explained here:
http://www.scaledup.com/beattheclock/

Coach, I'm hurt. I'm not dead.
Then sign up here for the TT:
http://www.bikereg.com/events/register.asp?eventid=6559 (PREREGISTRATION
ONLY!!!!!! For the umpteenth time, if you're late, you're late.)

When Alexander saw the breadth of his domain, he wept for there were no
more worlds to conquer.
Eh. No idea what this is about, but if you want to register for the mat
class, sign up here: http://www.bikereg.com/events/register.asp?eventid=6659

What are your prime directives? Serve the public trust, protect the
innocent, uphold the law.
And ride or help out with the Time Trial. Volunteers needed! Contact me
or Patt at patt@...

Thanks!
Carola, who's obviously suffering from the heat... ;-)

At the banquet we announced them, but the Luke Burton hasn't updated the
web page yet.... I may need to take that over soon myself.

I'll get it to you soon, as I have a hard drive problem on this machine
I'm on now.

Todd.

Also.

You can watch the 2007 Event video (near the end)
where all of the 2008 climbs are announced and
commented on (see link below).

I sent this out some time ago.

Climbers!

I hope your training for the 2008 low-key series is on
target. To help keep you motivated and maintain the
"eye of the tiger", the 2007 end of the series event
video is now available.

The video contains only certain highlights of the
night.

Enjoy

Yeah sorry I have been a slacker on this. I'm currently typing this in
El Camino hospital since my wife gave birth yesterday. And I'm
presenting at WWDC on Thursday. I've bitten off more than I can chew,
but I can chew pretty hard.

On the upside I have a week off work post-conference, so I have
promised myself to not even look at work related things for an entire
week. I hope to get something out the door for LKHC that week.

Regards,

Luke.

Thanks, Luke! When in doubt, KISS. And if you want to dish it back to
me, I can always fire up the scripts I used for 2007.... probably a

June 21st is Cycle, Core & More Day – You Decide

This unique event, set for Saturday, June 21st, is the newest of the Beat the Clock and Help Beat Cancer fundraising efforts.  The event's goal is to support the Lance Armstrong Foundation, where the goal is to unite people to fight cancer believing that unity is strength, knowledge is power and attitude is everything.

The first event is the Beat the Clock and Help Beat Cancer Time Trial.  Event begins at 7am on Saturday morning. With a $25 donation, you can test your cycling prowess against the clock in a 10-mile ride/loop on Canada Road in Woodside.  Many of you may be familiar with the time trial series, as it has been wildly successful, with more than $65,000 raised in the last 3 years.  Registration ends Thursday, June 19th, so register today! http://www.bikereg.com/events/register.asp?eventid=6559

The next of the day’s events is the Core & More session.  Event begins at 4pm on Saturday afternoon at the Motio Pilates Studio in Redwood City.  For a $20 donation, fitness and non-fitness lovers alike will enjoy this hour and a half session combining a variety of conditioning methods, including classic Pilates Mat Exercises, Resistance Stretching, Imagery and Yoga.  The session will leave you with more connected movement and more effective core conditioning that supports everything you do.  Remember, you are only as young as your spine is mobile.  Space is limited, so sign-up to reserve your space!  http://www.bikereg.com/events/register.asp?eventid=6659

If it's easier, call Patt at 650-851-7621 or email at patt@... to be added to the list.

Do one, do both, but don’t be a no-show!

I just got two of these for $5 each - SFBC 10% discount @ Sports
Basement in San Francisco. Rivendell also sells them. They leach less
into the water, perhaps healthier, definitely better tasting, but most
importantly, 18 grams lighter than lower-capacity HDPE-4 Specialized
bottles:

http://www.rivbike.com/images/products/full/0000/1780/bottlegroup.jpg

That's 0.3 seconds saved up OLH, typically, for me. Hey -- it could
make the difference in whether or not I make my time goal for the hill
this summer!

Think about it: 17 grams is about 10% the mass difference between a
black series and red series Trek Madone, which differ in cost (fuselage
price) around $2.5k. So one of these bottles could save $250 in frame
cost. :)

Caltrain's Bicycle Master Plan Will Leave You Behind, If You Don't Speak Up Now!
Due to the overwhelming success of Caltrain's bikes on board program, an increasing number of bicyclists are bumped every day as bike-cars quickly fill to capacity. Unfortunately Caltrain's Draft Bicycle Master Plan does not address present or future bike-car capacity needs. In fact, the Plan barely even acknowledges there is a capacity problem. Instead, the Plan focuses exclusively on ways to improve bike parking at Caltrain¢s ten most-popular stations.  See for yourself at:  www.caltrain.com/pdf/bike_master_plan_key_findings_public_presentation_6-08_v2.pdf

Caltrain Is Digging in Its Heels
Caltrain held three meetings in June to collect public comment.  You can read bicyclists¢ alarming accounts of these meetings at www.sfbike.org/caltrain_bob.  We need more voices to add to the cyclists who attended the public meetings!

You Don¢t Ride Caltrain?
If you stopped riding Caltrain, your voice is especially important!  Caltrain needs to hear that it is losing paying customers, because there is not enough bike space on trains.  No matter where you ride, Caltrain¢s Bicycle Master Plan affects you, too.  Every bike on the train is one less car in your community, making biking safer and more enjoyable for us all. Moreover, the rest of the country looks to the Bay Area for new ideas in transportation.  Make sure Caltrain is worthy.  Demand unlimited access for bikes on board trains!

Hello Janet and [fellow-LKHC'ers]!

Saw you at Pesky but I didn't get a chance to say HELLO. There a several profiles out there on the roads of Mount Diablo. They document grades and distances.

The distance from Athenian School to the SG Boundary is 1 mile; the distance from SG Boundary to Junction is 5.77 miles [average grade: 4.5%]; the distance from NG Kiosk to Junction is 6.55 miles [average grade: 5.75%]; the distance from Junction to the Summit is 4.64 miles [average grade: 6.9%; the Wall measures 17%].

As for elevations, the intersection of Diablo Road and Mount Diablo Scenic Boulevard is at 600 feet; the South Gate Boundary is at 750 feet; South Gate Kiosk is at 1500 feet; Junction is at 2170 feet; the Summit [located within the second floor of the Visitor Center] is 3849 feet; North Gate Kiosk is at 335 feet.

Hope this helps. See you on the Mountain!

Hi Mark and all,

absolutely! That's the spirit of Beat the Clock - everybody can participate! I suggest registering as a regular individual participant (unless you plan on bringing a partner on your recumbent ;-) ), we'll make a note in the results. Any handcycles, unicycles, recumbent tandems out there? You're invited too!

Well... I'm not racing that weekend so the climbing would be fun.... but then again, poolside sounds fantastic too.  Throw in a masseuse at the pool and you've got a deal :)

How does that climb compare with others we did last year, say 84-Old-la-Honda, Welch Creek or some of the climbs from Portola Valley?

Its a Welch Creeker on the bottom bracket for sure.  Possibly steeper overall, just not as long.  There are a few demoralizing walls, shown by the sawteeth in the profile.

The first mile is not very steep, meaning that the last two miles are very steep, 10 to 12% with one corner around 18%.   Its slope is like Welch Creek but it is not quite as long and it is shaded all the way up.  Please note that the Jaminson Creek time trial is part of the Santa Cruz Mountain Challenge 100 mile and 100 km rides.  I think the idea is that you are already dead tired by the time you start the TT.

The sawteeth in the profiles are there because the profiles are drawn from topographic maps, which do not reflect engineering of smaller roadways, in general.  The ground is cut and filled to even out the grade of the road, but the map contour lines are drawn as if the roads were not present.

I have only ever done this climb as part of the Santa
Cruz mountains challenge so you normally hit it around
the half way point (lunch stop is after this climb).
Even though it is in the shade it still gets pretty
hot. I seem to remember it being tougher than Welch
Creek and there are some sections you realy have to
grind up.

It as part of Mr. Bill's Nightmare. Here's the profile from the 1997 version,

I think Jamison Creek has a reputation as a killer climb because for most rides it comes along well into the ride when the snap has left the legs.  For me, living a mile from the bottom of Jamison, it is usually the first climb in my ride so it doesn’t seem all that bad, it is steep but it is not very long so I don’t think it is nearly as hard as Welch Creek.  As a reference, I usually score just about in the middle in the LKHC climbs, usually in the mid to upper 90’s, and I do Jamison Creek in 26 to 27 minutes using a 34/23 or 34/25 gear depending on how I feel that day.

By the way, we actually have three climbs of Jamison Creek caliber in the Boulder Creek area, which, if ridden in the right order, are pretty much juxtaposed.  You can climb to the top of Jamison then it is only a couple of miles along Empire Grade Rd. to Alba Rd. which you can descend then come back up.  Alba is listed in John Summerson’s book, A Complete Guide to Climbing, as one of the 100 toughest climbs in the US and is a true killer climb (2400 ft in 3.8 miles).  From the top of Alba, go back to Jamison and descend to Hwy 236, take a left and go 1.5 miles to China Grade and turn right.  China Grade has about three miles of flat before it pitches up to 12% and climbs about the same amount as Jamison.  So, with only a few miles of flat roads, this ride is almost as efficient a workout as traditional hill repeats but doesn’t make you feel like a broken-record.  Total climbing is about 6000 ft., most of it over 10%. Almost all the ride is in beautiful redwood groves and there is very little traffic.  That is my unabashed plug for riding in Boulder Creek; I moved here twenty-five years ago largely because it has what I consider the best biking roads in the state.
