Everything went well with the knee scope yesterday. The surgery
lasted about an hour, and we got started a half later than scheduled.
Got home around 9:30 last night.

I slept well...minimal pain. I had two Vicadin before leaving the
hospital and took another one around 11:00 last night. Woke up around
2:00 to go to the bathroom and put fresh ice on the knee. This
morning I woke up as the kids were getting ready for school. Took 4
ibuprofin and hte pain is still nothing. I had some cereal this
morning, but got nauseous and threw it up about a half hour later.
Guess I'll stick to soup and jello for today yet.

I didn't see the doctor after the surgery, but he did talk to Kathy.
He told her that it was a lot worse in there than he anticipated, and
if I go back to high mileage running, I'll be looking at a knee
replacement before too long. Looks like the marathoning days are
over. Right now I need to recover, heal, and rehab. Once I get going
again I'l have a better read of what I might be capable of doing. I
trust this doc...unlike the other one I saw in March who told me I was
done without even examining me.

Glad I've got my bike ready. I'm going to have to learn to swim
better too.

Giddyup!
Pappy

Kathy,

Wanting to do an extreme 5K is pretty amazing. Since there aren't
many females that like to do those races at least you can place well
in your age group. It does sound like a lot of fun. We have a race
like that here in December that maybe I'll have to try this year.

Congrats on finishing! It sounds pretty crazy!

Andy

Kathy, congratulations on having the courage to do this extreme
race, and the strength to get through it. You should be proud. The
best part is that you had fun doing it. Good job!

Thanks for the report Kathy. All I can say is THAT is running and racing at
it's finest. It's a great challenge, hard workout and reminds us that the sport
is still, essentially play. (yea, I'm one of those lunatics who thinks that
running up and down mountainsides is play)
Also, don't worry about your low placement at all. These kind of racers only
bring out the serious fanatics. All those girls and guys you beat in the
neighborhood city 5K weren't there so you were in some serious company!
I hope it was fun because it sounded fun. Huggs Becky

Kathy (or should we call you RunRik?),

Sounds like a great adventure. I like that you got
out there and tried it with the young crowd...to show
them you can still git 'r done.

A bee sting and poision ivy? Yuck! I have never
(knocking on wood) had either so I have no tips for
you except to say, "Being like RunRik is
overrated...stick to running on the concrete." :)

Note: I did not say that being as sexy as RunRik is
overrated. (Just wanted to make that clarification.)

Keep looking up...

Just wanted to touch base with you guys about my race last weekend.

It was a wild trip and they are promising to make it "more extreme"

So far Hugh is only doing long runs of 12 miles. His heels don't
hurt for 3 days, but he says that is all he is going to do unless
they get better before Chicago. I don't notice him limping either.
He does have an appointment with his primary doctor on Sept 18th so
maybe she can get him a shot or suggest something. I'm not sure he
has a plan though, but he is going to try to run in regardless.

I think Kelley's longest run before her marathon last year was 12
miles.

First of all: Good luck today -- we are all pulling

Barb and I are heading to the cabin tomorrow morning for a nice, long
weekend. I'm looking forward to some good runs on those cool mornings
around the lake, including a long run on Sunday.
Becky and her fiance are joining us Saturday night, and will explore some
possible sites for their wedding reception next June.
Pappy, they should have a wedding date soon after, and will call you soon
after that. Right now they are leaning toward June 23.

Gotta run,

RG, walk breaks will be fine with me. We can plan to walk during water stops,
if you want, to begin with. I was thinking about this earlier today, trying to
remember how many marathons I've run non-stop. I think there have been
only about a half-dozen. Three Chicagos, three Bayshores and Boston. That's
seven out of 15.
I told Barb last night that I felt bad not planning to eat with you and Denise
that
Saturday night, since it might be your last Chicago. She seemed to agree that
maybe I should feel bad. So change your reservation to the Italian Village, 6
p.m., or I can add you to ours. :)

RG, be afraid. Be very afraid. It's going to bite you again, and you know it.
On the other hand, don't worry, because you're going to lick this heel problem.

I went out for an 8-mile pace run yesterday feeling kinda tired, but surprised
myself and did it easily at 8:56 pace and only 68% effort. I'm encouraged that
my tough days are boosting my fitness now instead of cutting into it, like
earlier this summer.

Still very much looking forward to a break after Chicago, though.

Gotta run,
Jonguy

RG,

In my experience, the fact that the heels recover fairly quickly is a
good indicator that you haven't developed bone spurs under the tendon
insertions. That's a really good sign that you can beat this thing
without surgery.

Please consider the first 3 options on my list.

On a personal note, I have found in the last 5 weeks that I really
don't have the time or inclination to run to run 2 marathons a year in
the future. If I can qualify for, and run Boston once, I'm done with
the 26.2 stuff (except maybe in another Ultra). I'm too competetive to
run them 'just for fun', because it takes me almost the same amount of
work to do that as it does to run it as fast as possible.

Be patient with the injury. It's caused by a structural problem that
won't resolve itself without action (items 1-3), and sufficient time
for it to completely resolve itself.

Best of luck.

Chris

Pappy, good luck to you this afternoon, and may the surgeon make all the
right moves and decisions. You've been through this enough times, you could
probably tell him what to do. Let us know how it goes.

Thanks Leslie...and to all for your thoughts, prayers, positive
energy, and love as I go under the scope for the third time...first
for this knee though.

I didn't start getting nervous until yesterday. That's probably
because I had everything at the office and with the team pretty much
done and set up for the couple of days I'll be down...means I didn't
have tasks to focus on and got to thinking WAY too much.

Kathy and girls treated me (I say treated even though I paid) to my
favorite restaurant last night...Buffalo Wild Wings. Had a nice
salad, some Asian Zing wings, and a couple of raspberry wheat beers to
wash them down. Some friends went with us...she's a nurse also...and
neither nurse thought the hospital would discount my anasthesia bill
if I just kept drinking up to the time of surgery. No wonder medical
costs are so high.

Giddyup!

Becky,

Good to have you back here posting. Glad things are going well for
you in Phoenix. Good luck with school.

Aaron, the guy I coach who's trying to qualify for the Olympic Trials
is now in Boulder to get his masters and to train. He was thinking of
Houston in January for a OTQ attempt, but after meeting and talking to
some Boulder area runners he is now leaning toward P.F. Chang's in
Phoenix. I'll keep you posted.

Giddyup!

KDG,

That is exactly what it is. At the start/finish line of the track
I'll park my recovering bottom in a chair with my leg propped up on
another chair with a stopwatch, a clipboard, the bucket of rocks, and
a steaming cup of coffee while they crank out the 400's. Donuts after
for everyone!

Giddyup!
Pappy
