The Maple Leafs couldn't finish a comeback effort in Montreal, as they fell to
the Canadiens 5-4 in a thrilling shootout loss Saturday night.

The Canadiens led 4-2 midway through the third, but Alexei Ponikarovsky's second
of the game and a last-minute goal from
Tomas Kaberle tied it with 54 seconds left in regulation.
Kaberle finished with a strong four point night with one goal and three assists.

Both Montreal shooters beat Vesa Toskala in the shootout, both with wrist shots
to the glove side on which he didn't move. Jaroslav Halak stopped Lee Stempniak
and Kaberle in Toronto's first shootout of the season.

The Leafs are back in action on Tuesday as they host the Tampa Bay Lightning
(7:30 PM, SPORTSNET, AM640).

Third Period Tie-Breaker by Olivier Labelle Gives Reading a 3-2 Win Over Johnstown

Reading, PA – The Reading Royals of the ECHL (4-2-1-1=10, 2nd East Division), affiliate of the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Boston Bruins of the National Hockey League and the Toronto Marlies of the American Hockey League, extended the team’s winning streak to three games with a 3-2 win over the Johnstown Chiefs at the Sovereign Center in Reading, Pennsylvania. This marked the third consecutive one-goal win for the Royals—and the second in a row against the Chiefs. Olivier Labelle scored what proved to be the game winner when he broke a two-two tie in the third period with his first goal as a member of the Royals. Kevin Regan (2-2-1-1; 34/36) made a number of critical stops at critical moments, particularly the first couple of the minutes of the game when the Chiefs came out steaming. Johnstown’s Shane Connelly (0-3-0-1; 27/30) was the hard-luck loser for the second day in a row. The Royals first goal was scored while the team was on the power play (1-4); while Reading’s penalty killers kept the Johnstown power play off the board (0-3).

After surviving an early flurry by the Chiefs, Reading struck 15:08 into the first while playing with the man advantage. Joey Ryan and Nick St. Pierre used a pass-and-switch play in the high slot to free St. Pierre for the hard shot from the right point. Connelly made the stop on that shot; but the rebound fell to the left side of the net where Danick Bouchard punched it back in for his fourth of the season. Johnstown tied the game at one with 58.2 seconds remaining in the first when a series of defensive zone miscues ended with Connor Shields slipping a loose puck from the low slot into the right side of the net for his first goal as a pro.

The Royals re-gained the one-goal lead 6:10 into the second when Ben Gordon recognized that Eric Werner was stepping out of the penalty box after serving two minutes for a holding minor. Gordon fired a pin-point pass from the defensive zone to Werner who was off to the races on a clean breakaway. Werner’s snap shot slipped through the upper body of Connelly and had just enough steam to slide over the goal line for his first of the year. Once again, however, the Chiefs—and Shields—tied the game back up. On this one, Ryan Menei made a nice pass into the high slot where a waiting Shields pounded the puck into the upper left corner for his second of the night at the 12:36 mark.

The Royals got what proved to be the game winner 10:04 into the third when a strong play on the wall in the defensive zone by Gordon freed the puck into the neutral area where Labelle picked up and carried into Johnstown’s zone on the left wing side. Labelle gained the left circle, cut hard left-to-right towards the slot, and then fired a hard snap shot back against the grain to the low, short side on Connelly for his first of the year. Johnstown played with desperation down the stretch, but the Royals and particularly Regan held fast for the team’s third consecutive home win.

The Royals are off until Saturday night (November 7, 2009 @ 7:05 pm) when the defending Kelly Cup Champion South Carolina Stingrays visit the Sovereign Center for the first time this season. Saturday’s broadcast time is 6:30 pm on the Royals Radio Network presented by Transmissions by Arbogast.  To become a part of Royals hockey, call 610-898-PUCK or log onto www.royalshockey.com.

LAST WEEK’S RESULT

Friday, October 30                  Crunch 2                     NORFOLK 0

Sunday, November 1              ADIRONDACK 5     Crunch 0

HOME TEAM IN CAPS

PENALTY KILL PROGRESSING: Although the Crunch power play has been struggling recently, the other half of the special teams has turned it on, as the club has killed off 15 consecutive man-advantages against, including killing off all 10 penalties against them in Sunday’s contest at Adirondack.

Syracuse also went 5-for-5 on the PK in Friday night’s 2-0 shutout win over Norfolk and now currently sits 14th in the AHL in that category, stifling the opposition’s offense on 50-of-59 chances, good for an 84.7% success rate.

The Crunch’s PK has been even better in three games at the War Memorial at Oncenter, killing off 17 of 19 penalties, good for an 89.5% success rate.

DAN SHUTS THE DOOR: In seven games so far this season, Crunch goaltender Dan LaCosta has faced a lot of shots. In fact, in 488 minutes, LaCosta has faced 289 shots, an average of 36.13 shots against per game. He ranks fourth in the AHL in saves, with 262.

Despite being peppered with so many pucks, LaCosta has locked down three of the Crunch’s four wins this season. None were more impressive than his 2-0 shutout win over Norfolk this past Friday at the Norfolk Scope. He made 32 saves, including a great glove save and a diving stop across the crease in the game’s final minutes to keep the Admirals off the scoreboard. For his effort, he was named the game’s first star.

LaCosta was also in goal for the last shutout the Crunch recorded as a team, a 4-0 win at Rochester back on January 22, 2009. In all, he has blanked the opposition seven (7) times in his AHL career and currently sits second on the club’s all-time list in shutouts, behind only J.F. Labbe and Crunch assistant coach, Karl Goehring, who each have 11.

LaCosta is 3-4-0-1 this season with a 3.32 goals against average and .907 save percentage. A native of Labrador City, Newfoundland, he was selected by Columbus in the third round, 93rd overall, in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft.

UPCOMING GAMES:

ROCHESTER AMERICANS (FLORIDA PANTHERS): The Crunch make the just over one hour trek to Rochester Friday night to take on the Amerks in the third contest at the Blue Cross Arena and fourth of 10 overall meetings between these two clubs this season. The Crunch are 0-2-1-0 against the Rochester so far this year, losing both road contests to their I-90 rivals. Syracuse notched its only point of the series in a hard-fought 3-2 overtime loss at the War Memorial at Oncenter back on October 24. Crunch right wing Maksim Mayorov leads his club in scoring against Rochester this year, tallying two points (1g, 1a) in the three contests. Michal Repik (2g, 2a) and Chris Taylor (1g, 3a) lead the Americans and all players in scoring in the season series, with four points each. Amerks rookie goaltender Alexander Salak has started all three games against the Crunch this year and is 3-0-0 with a 0.98 goals against average and .966 save percentage.

NORFOLK ADMIRALS (TAMPA BAY LIGHTNING): The Crunch welcome in the Norfolk Admirals for the second time this season to the War Memorial at Oncenter Saturday and the third of six overall meetings between these two new East Division rivals. The Crunch have taken the previous two contests, a 5-4 win back on October 16 and a 2-0 shutout win this past Friday at the Norfolk Scope. Derek MacKenzie leads the Crunch and all scorers in the season series in scoring, with three assists. Two of Dan LaCosta’s three wins on the season have come against Norfolk, and he is 2-0-0 with a 2.00 goals against average and .931 save percentage against the Admirals. Ryan Craig (2g, 0a), Mark Parrish (1g, 1a) and Juraj Simek (0g, 2a) lead the way for Norfolk in scoring against the Crunch.

UPCOMING PROMOTIONS:

P&C FOOD AND PHARMACY NESTLE CANDY PROMOTION: In the month of November, anyone that purchases two (2) Nestle product candy bags or boxes will receive $5 off a regularly priced Crunch adult ticket. The Nestle items are limited to Nestle and Wonka brand fun size bags, 8-packs, stand up bags and concession boxes. This cannot be combined with any other offers.

COOLWATERS POOL AND SPA CRUNCH POOL TABLE GIVEAWAY: Beginning this month, fans can enter-to-win a custom Syracuse Crunch pool table, courtesy of CoolWaters Pool and Spa.   The American Billiards ‘Eliminator’ model pool table, which normally retails for $2,500, comes in a traditional cherry finish and includes two cues, chalk, triangle and bridge.

In addition, the one inch slate table features a customized Crunch logo in the center and is currently on display in the Crunch Club during home games. In order to enter, fans can stop in at CoolWaters Pool and Spa, visit the Guest Services Table near room 243 during Crunch home games, or email Karen Simbari at ksimbari@... with their full name and contact information.

Melnyk files grievance
Wants $4M back from Heatley
It's payback time for Eugene Melnyk. Sun Media has learned the Senators owner was so furious with being forced to shell out a $4-million bonus to Dany Heatley, who refused to accept a trade to the Edmonton Oilers on July 1, he has filed a grievance asking for his money back.

Shot in the foot -- again
At least they scored a goal. It's all about small moral victories right now, in lieu of any real ones, for the slumping Edmonton Oilers, and a fruitless two-game road trip that yielded one fluke in 120 minutes is about as small as it gets.

Canucks dropping like flies
It's hard to tell whether the Canucks are lucky or jinxed. On one hand, the team is managing to eke out wins despite the constant additions to the injury list. On the other, the rate at which these players are heading to the medical room is getting more and more ridiculous.

Second Year Forward Registered Six Points in Three Games for Reading Last Week

Reading, PA – The Reading Royals of the ECHL, affiliate of the Toronto Maple Leafs and Boston Bruins of the National Hockey League and the Toronto Marlies of the American Hockey League, today announced that forward Stefano Giliati [“JILL ee AH tee”] has been named the Sher-wood Hockey ECHL Player of the Week for October 25 – November 1, 2009. In a transaction also announced today, the Royals loaned forward Gavin Morgan to the Hershey Bears of the AHL.

Giliati, a second year pro from Montreal, Quebec, registered six points in three games for the Royals last week. On Thursday, Giliati, who in on assignment to the Royals from the Marlies, factored in all three Reading goals, scoring a goal and picking up a pair of assists—and then bagging his attempt in the shootout—in Reading’s 4-3 shootout win over the Toledo Walleye. On Saturday, Giliati stretched his league season-long goal scoring streak to six games and also picked up a pair of assists in Reading’s 4-3 win over the Johnstown Chiefs. Although Giliati did not factor in the scoring on Sunday, the Royals beat the Chiefs 3-2 to extend the team’s win streak to three games. Giliati is currently tied for the league lead with fourteen points (6g-8a).

Giliati becomes the ninth Royal in team history to win the ECHL’s Player of the Week Award, joining Brendan Brooks, Brian McCullough, Ryan Kinasewich, Mike Pandolfo, Shay Stephenson, Greg Hogeboom, Chris Blight, and Ben Gordon.

On behalf of Stefano Giliati, a case of pucks will be donated to a Reading youth hockey organization by Sher-wood Hockey, the exclusive puck supplier of the ECHL. Since beginning its sponsorship of the award in 2000-01, Sher-wood Hockey has donated more than 22,700 pucks to youth hockey organizations in ECHL cities.

The Royals are off until Saturday (November 7, 2009 @ 7:05) when the defending Kelly Cup Champion South Carolina Stingrays visit the Sovereign Center. Saturday’s broadcast time is 6:30 pm on the Royals Radio Network presented by Transmissions by Arbogast. To become a part of Royals hockey, call 610-898-PUCK or log onto www.royalshockey.com.

Phil Kessel made his Leafs debut and had 10 shots and played 23:50 of action but
it wasn't enough as the Leafs fell 2-1 to the Lightning.

Ian White had the lone Leafs goal.

NHL COMPLETES PURCHASE OF COYOTES
Plus, Coyotes Howliday Packs On Sale November 9th!

Sale Completed: On Monday, U.S. Bankruptcy Court approved the purchase of the Phoenix Coyotes by the National Hockey League.
In a statement, NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly said:

"We are pleased and very encouraged by today's developments in court. Now that approval of the proposed sale has been entered by the Court, the National Hockey League will work to close the transaction quickly and assume full control of the Coyotes' business operations. The League also will engage immediately in a process to identify -- and expedite sale of the franchise to -- new ownership that is committed to the Club's long-term success in the Phoenix/Glendale area. We do not intend to comment publicly on that process.

"The NHL thanks Coyotes fans for their continued support of the franchise and hopes that today's developments will provide fans further reason to embrace the Coyotes in order to ensure the team's long-term future in Arizona."

Stay tuned to PhoenixCoyotes.com to keep up with developments related to the sale of the Coyotes.

Traditions in the Community

Ice Hockey in Harlem is a non-profit community-based organization for youth that uses the sport of hockey to promote academic achievement, responsibility, teamwork and good character.

Since 1987, the Rangers and Ice Hockey in Harlem have enriched the lives of more than 1000 inner-city boys and girls.

The Ice Hockey in Harlem Annual Sports Auction benefiting Harlem’s charitable youth hockey program will be held on November 18 at MSG’s Play by Play restaurant.

Rangers goaltender Steve Valiquette will be honored at the event, which consists of autograph signings and a sports memorabilia auction.

Don’t miss out on a chance to mingle with some of your favorite Rangers players from the past and present. CLICK HERE for more information or to purchase tickets.

For more than 30 years, Family Dynamics has been working to protect children and strengthen families in the Bedford Stuyvesant and Bushwick neighborhoods of Brooklyn. Today, the organization continues to battle against child abuse, teen pregnancy, domestic violence, high school dropout rates and inequality.

Members of the New York Rangers will join alumnus and honorary chairman Adam Graves at the 14th Annual Family Dynamics fundraising event at MSG’s Play by Play Restaurant on Thursday, November 19th. Rangers team members will host a series of activities, including kids games, a live Rangers sports memorabilia auction, and an autograph session. CLICK HERE for more information or to purchase tickets.

Your support of events like this one helps Family Dynamics enhance its programs, broaden the organization’s reach and provide the greatest quality of care for each and every child and family it serves.
