I have noticed a few new members registering for this group. I welcome
all and hopefully you can contribute more to the group. The Lebanese
basketball season is now on and semms to be going according to
schedule and plan.
Of course the absence of Fadi Khatib has made watching the league less
entertaining. But still, in his last game as a member of Al Ittihad
Aleppo, he scored 51 points against Aleppo rivals Jalaa' in a game his
team won 97-63.
He also scored 29 aganist league champions last year Al Jeish 70-65
and scored 41 points against against Al Hurriyah 112-59.
The Ittihad team coached by lebanese Ghassan Sarkis is still 10-0 in
ten games. Probably Fadi el Khatib will be crowned MVP of the Syrian
league.

Welcome to the Lebanese Basketball Group.
I have sent you the details in the e-mail you indicated.
Once the article is finished, please post the URL here so that we
could all browse the contents
And all the best.
I am compiling a page concerning Lebanese Basketball for a website -
www.zgharta.com
Having searched the subject it seems much of the online sites are out
of date and indeed conflicting.
What I need to know is the following:
1. The name of the league etc where teams play.
2. The number of Divisions. I have seen reference to 1,2,3,4
3. The number of teams which play in the Divisions. For the First
Division I have seen reference to 8 and 12 teams.
4. The names of the teams in the Divisions or at least for the 1st &
2nd Divisions for the 2004/2005 season.
5. In addition to becoming Divison Champsions are there other
Lebanese competitions , and if so details ie name and who plays in
them etc
6. I have seen this
"The 8th and 7th team of Division One will automatically be relegated
to the 2nd division; the 7th team will play with the 2nd of the
Division Two on a best of 3 basis; The 1st of the Division Two will
automatically be promoted.
But what does "the 7th team will play with the 2nd of the Division
Two on a best of 3 basis" mean !
Once I have compiled I will send it to you for checkingand if you
like it you can use it for your own site.
This basketball game is new to me being English where we play English
football and rugby. Also I do not speak/read Arabic. How I got
involved with the site is a long story!
Regards to you all

Just to give you an indication how good the lebanese basketballers
are, just consider this. In the West Asia Juniors Chmapionship, our
juniors team last week, coached by American head coach Paul Coughter
won all five games against Iraq, Iran, Jordan, Yemen and Syria and
got the West Asia Trophy and despite not taking part in previous
year event, have qualified to the Asia Junior Basketball
Championship in India.
Star performances by all our juniors but most notably Mazen
Mneimneh, a true MVP performance with 28.2 ppg and also Hasan al
Laqees, Zadi Hobeika, Imad Saadeh and Joseph Awad.
Truely a national team to be proud of.
Actually there is a lot of criticism about our present Lebanese
National Team for Men in Tehran (WABA) as read in the Lebanese
press, plus that our FBL Federation is nearly determined not to send
them to Algerian Pan-Arab Games.
But their harsh assessment of the Lebanese team and its "failures"
is misplaced. First the whole set-up of the team was that it had a
lot of younger players. They said this was in a bid to give them
better "exposure".
Fine, if it is giving them better international experience, then
this is what you get, win some, lose some. If you had sent the MAIN
team, this wouldn't have happened. But you suspended the "best of
the best" because of certain behaviors for a devastating 3 years and
you sent those "kids". Now who is to blame.
Me I love this new set-up, so much so I prefer it to the team of
veterans that we had, but I cannot be toooooo demanding on those
younger elements or worse punish them because they didn't "achieve".
On the contrary, considering the circumstaces, they achieved quite
well, witnessing their game against Iran.
Plus don't forget Fadi el Khatib or Joe Vogel, absolute "musts" for
our national team were not there at all. The experienced Paul Khoury
and also Brian Bshara who played so well had been struck by
legitimate family concerns and left in mid-tournament. Another bog
blow for the remaining 10 men.
So what you saw was a younger less-experienced team decimated of its
best players.
Me, I would have given my wholehearted support of THIS team instead
of publicly humiliating them in the papers because of their losses
to Jordan and Syria. As for game against Iran, they did really well
although they lost in overtime.
Don't lose hope guys. We only wish they send you all to Algeria
regardless of what you did in Tehran! You have done what you could
and with more and more play, you will improve even further.
it was good ,really good, your opinion about our NT player, but i think the game
beetween iran and your guy,was the best game in that series, because your guy
wanted to break our victories.maybe,i dont khow.but unfortunity they couldn't.
best wishes for you and your NT's basketball team.

Hi there
I welcome all new members to the group.
Regarding Antranik, sure there is a very good women's team actually.
They were crowned champions for 2002-2003 season after
defeating the previous champions Hekmeh Mar Doumit in a play-off
series that ended in Antranik's favor 3-1.
Unfortunately the Lebanese national women basketball team has
declined to go to Bangkok for 2004 Asian Championships. This is such
a shame, because had our women gone, with the talents that we have,
they would possiby win the Asian trophy. Instead we make huge
blunders and forfeit the chance that Lebanon achieves something good
internationally! Now instead, Jordan and Iraq women's team will
represent the WABA region in Bangkok Thailand.
Speaking of Iraq, you may like to know that a new league has started
actually with 8 teams: Al Hilla - the title holders, Al Karkh - the
runners up, Al Shourta (Police), Al Jaysh (the Army), Al A'zamiyyah,
Al Armany (the Armenian Club), Dahouk and finally Naft al Janoub
(Petrol of the South). These information are from Eurobasket portal.
Hello, My name is Miska, Iraqian live in USA, MI...I love basketball,
and I my self in that game, not a current team player, but soon am
getting back on my feet ...am so glad that there is a place such as
this one on line to reach the Middleast Basketball teams, or fans...I
like the way you all are so into adding info about games, results,
and player info, eventhough I don't know many of the player in Leb
team, but though here am sure my knowledge is ganna expand even
more...

and keep up the great job members
salam

A group of Lebanese basketball players residing in the Emirates had
the great idea of forming Ittihad al Shabab al Lubnani (Union of
Lebanese Youth). This team of players has gained great notoriety
inside teh Emirates by displaying great keenness in practicing the
game, to the extent that it has now been officially invited as a
guest team to participate in a preperatory basketball tournament
immediately prior to the regular championship games in UAE.
Our team of Lebanese men has fallen into the same group with UAE's Al
Ahli, Al Wasl and Al Shabab basketball teams, whereas Group 2 will
include Al Wasl, An Nasr, Al Shariqa and Ash Shaab.
The tournament's first round is scheduled for 29, 30 and 31 Octiober.
The top two teams from each group will reach the semi-finals.
All the best success to our Lebanese team and what a fine idea we say.
In a previous post, we had published the URL of the Training Camp of
the LA Clippers. It was at:
http://www.nba.com/clippers/news/trainingcamp0304_roster_030927.html
and where Fady el Khatib was featured prominently.
But it seems the deal is officially off with Fady el Khatib, as both
his number and his photo have been removed from the page. So its
final now, that he is back to Sagesse and with the knowledge of the
Clippers.
What is not clear though is, if the Clippers have kept his rights as
a player for coming seasons, if an equitable financial agreement can
be reached between both managements.
There will not be a repeat performance of two years ago. This time
around, we couldn't pass the Korean hurdle unfortunately for a second
chance against China.
In a closely contested match, Lebanon even got a 5-point advantage 54-
49in third quarter, and the regulation time of which finished with a
great basket from Ghaleb Rida forcing an overtime 74-74.
But in overtime, and although the Lebanese had the possession ball
for the last 5 seconds with the score at 85-83 favor of the South
Koreans, our men missed the chance to make it a three point shot for
a win or at least a basket to equalize for a second overtime. Instead
Elie's pass just went astray and it was all over for Lebanese.
Sadly we will not reach the Asina national final. Last time around,
Lebanon had won against this team 75-72 to reach the final and thus
qualify for Indanapolis 2002 World Championhsip.
Still our congratulations for the fighting spirit of Lebanon's well-
coached selection and their urge to win.
Owing to its double victory against Japan and India, and despite
losing against China, Lebanon are to the semi finals and will face
Korea tomorrow.
This is a repeat of what happened during our qualification games to
Indianapolis, where Lebanon defeated Korea and played the finals
against China (2001-2002).
For those interested, here is the NBA.com Clippers page
"Clippers Announce Training Camp Roster:
http://www.nba.com/clippers/
Also detailed roster:
http://www.nba.com/clippers/news/trainingcamp0304_roster_030927.html
Of course, the matter of Fady el Khatib's free agency and his long-
term contract with Hekmeh Sagesse (5 years still remaining on the
contract) is still not settled, as no financial agreement has been
reached between the Clippers and Sagesse managements regarding Fdy's
early release.
In three consecutive games that were held this week, Team Lebanon
has won all its initial matches in the Asian Nations Cup against
Kazakhstan, Hong Kong and Uzbekistan. A great performance thus far
with a much younger national team. Consistent perfoprmers quoted as
highest scorers are Sabah Khoury, Rony Fahed, Ghaleb Rida and Joseph
Vogel.
However next round doesn't look as rosy. Now that the Asian
contenders are down to 8 from the initial 16, one of which will
incidentally qualify for the Athens Summer Olympics Basketball in
2004, Team Lebanon finds itself in a real tough group that contains
in addition to us, China, Japan and India.
All the best for Team Lebanon and coach Ghassan Sarkis.
I am looking for information on a player named Tony Harris. He
played for Unit/Uberlandia Praia (BRA-BNL) in 2002 - 2003. He might
be signing a new contract with a team call Najja.
I am needing any information that you might be able to provide to
me. I am the mother of his seven year old son and I have been
unable to get in touch with him. I need to locate him, if anyone
can help please forward any information to me at:
