There has been a lot of discussion recently about Women Basketball in
Lebanon and its rather unhealthy state of affairs after so many clubs
seemed to give up on it recently.
Well the Lebanese prove themselves wrong again, as a rising woman
basketball star Tamara Hasan, formerly of Al Riyadi (Sporting), has
signed a professional deal with LMB in Lausanne, Switzerland to play
for the Swiss first division basketball team. Apparently there is
still a lot of talent to go around in the Lebanese Women Basketball
League if we look good enough.
But yet some things seem lacking, like a national coach for women.
Now that signing of Ghassan Sarkis as national coach for Men and
Rizcallah Zaloum national coach for juniors has been announced, it is
high time FBL assigned a good national coach (also preferably of
Lebanese nationality) for our women's national basketball team, as we
firmly believe, as we have stated so many times, that our women team
is in a better position than our men team to attain Arab, Asian
titles and reach important positions in international tournaments.
Returning to Tamara, she becomes only the second Lebanese women of
original Lebanese nationality to play overseas after having played
here in Lebanon, the pioneer in this field being Salpy Tchokarian
about whom we had so many postings on our Lebanese Basketball Group.
Salpy had played professionally in Tunis before returning to her
great performances here and becoming a pillar player in the
achievements of Lebanese Women's basketball.
Regarding standings women, Antranik seems to have taken the
initiative once again and after 9 weeks of play remaining defeatless
with an 8-0 record!
The women's league (for those who do not know) is formed this year of
just 6 teams in this order in standings:
1. Antranik 8-0
2. Hekmeh (Sagesse) 6-2
3. Homenetmen 5-3
4. Al Riyadi (Sporting) 2-6
5. ENB 3-6
6. Sadaka 1-8
