Alerting all about the passing of Jules Tygiel. He was an outstanding scholar, an exemplar as a historian, a standard bearer for those of us who write on baseball history, and someone who was very giving of his time to younger scholars like myself. Jules read my book manuscript several times and gave a thorough and thoughtful critique. Whatever success my book “Playing America’s Game” has enjoyed is a credit to his gracefulness and wonderful spirit. I will not forget the tour of McCovey Cove and San Francisco he gave me during All-Star Game week. He will be missed.

Adrian

Good to hear others have found further information on Rua. I had
located some material on him while conducting research on Bellan at
Fordham a few years back. (I believe he is mentioned/buried in a
footnote in a paper I wrote somewhere). If memory serves correct there
is a photograph of Rua in the Special Collections at Fordham as most
students had a portait taken of themselves that was given to the school
administrators. I will have to dig into my files when I get back to
Illinois.

Hermanos Latinos:
I write to you to inform you about a very important historical discovery on Latin American early history.
When Esteban Bellan left St. John's College in 1868 to pursue a career in baseball with the Unions of Morrisania he was not the only Cuban to do so.
Rafael de la Ra, a native from Matanzas, Cuba, played 12 games for the Unions of Lansingburgh of the National Association in that same year of 1868. He was a pitcher, with a good screwball but with some control crisis.
De la Ra joins Bellan as the first latin player in an organized and highly competitive league. The National Association would not be considered a Major League until it became professional in 1871, and still that is debatable. But what is clear, is that they are the first latin ballplayers to compete at the highest level of baseball in the United States.
This was a discovery made by the great investigators Peter Morris and
John Thorn, and I have been helping in the last couple of days trying to figure out some aspects of his biography.
This is what we have at the moment:
Rafael Julin de la Ra was born on January 28th, 1848 in Matanzas, Cuba
In 1860, he appears with an age of 12 in an official United States census living in Newton, Massachussets. He was studying in a small school directed by R.B. Blaisdell in Newton. There is also a Finomen Rua in that census, 18 years old, apparently Rafael's brother.
In June 1864, he is one of the passengers of the steamship Havana that arrives to New York from La Habana in a note published by The New York Times. Rafael was about to start his preparatory education at St. John's College (Fordham) on September 1864 and he stays there until July 1867. He studied there at the same time as Bellan. In the official student catalogues of St. John's College he is listed as Julian R. Rua from Matanzas,
Cuba.
In the academic year of 1868-69. he is listed studying at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York, by the name of Rafael J. Rua, from Matanzas Cuba. He stays there only for one year and he does not graduate.
It is in that same town of Troy where the team Unions of Lansingburgh, from the National Association, had its hometown. Rua plays for them in 12 games mostly as a pitcher. At that time, the National Association was still officially, an amateur competition. There is in existence an image of the 1868 Unions of Lansingburgh, that you can see in the book Smoke by Peter Bjarkman, where Bellan is mistakingly identified (Bellan didnt play for Lansingburgh in 1868, he did in 1869). However, we are working to try to identify De la Rua in that same image.
Official documents were found for Rafael de la Ra in which he applies for an american citizenship on September 23rd 1874, in which he declares himself a merchant. When
the naturalization was granted he applies for his first american passport, which he fills as Rafael de la Ra, living on 15th and 32nd streets in New York, and having born on January 28th, 1848 in Matanzas, Cuba. His height, according to these documents, was 5 ft. 9 in.
According to encyclopedias with early Cuban League listings by Jorge Figueredo and Severo Nieto, Rafael de la Ra never played in the Cuban League.
Without a doubt, a very important piece in latin american baseball history.

Good morning,
Bill Nowlin is heading up a book project dealing with
the 1959 Chicago White Sox. He's looking for a writer
to put together a BioProject biography on Rudy Arias.
Bill indicates that Arias is still living, so there's
a chance of a possibility for an interesting
interview, too. Additionally, the biographer would
most likely see their work in print this coming year.
To get started, here's a quick link to his numbers:

Please contact Bill at bnowlin@... if you are
interested. Your assistance would be great
appreciated.
mil gracias!

To Adam Ulrey:
Actually, this pertains to life before Organized
Baseball for Cuellar. I hope you will find it useful.
Written by Guillermo Segundo Uriarte "El Kaiser" in
"Revista de la Liga Profesional de Beisbol de
Nicaragua", a booklet that came out in December of
1956, after the first pro season in Nicaragua.
"Miguel Angel Cuellar Santana.- Victimized by surgery
that caused his leaving the team (Ed. note: 5
Estrellas), which in spite of its powerful offense
showed that his lefty arm was needed. In a short time
he has shown that he has started a splendid
professional career. He is weak with runners on,
specially at third. His record was 10-3 and 2.95. He
started playing ball in 1954 with the team "Regimiento
No. 3", and closed out his first season with a no hit
no run game. He belongs to the Sugar Kings reserves.
The announcement that he was coming (Ed. note: to
Nicaragua) assured him of many victories. He was born
in Calle Union, province of Santa Clara, Cuba, on May
5, 1936; he is 5-10, 158."
Note the archaic language, terribly hard to translate
(presumably, Uriarte interviewed Cuellar)!
Cuellar came back to Nicaragua in 1962-1963 to pitch
for Boer, and with an 8-2, 1.92 record helped the team
become champion by winning both rounds of the
competition. The financial loss caused by the absence
of the Final Series made the league adopt a point
system for the following years.
Note that when Cuellar made the Cuban Sugar Kings team
for the 1957 season he took a year off his date of
birth; I am not clear on which day (5 or 8) he was
born. I also know that one day he tried to pitch with
a blister on one finger. They tried to hide it with
tape but it was too obvious so somebody else
pitched... Tough, we wanted to see him.
Hope it helps,
Tito

My advise if he can contact someone in Miami, Florida (his residence), probably the best contact will be baseball beat writer Jorge Ebro from El Nuevo Herald (The Miami Herald in Spanish) will have information how to contact him.
I only can add he is a great personality and loves to talk about baseball, he worked last spring with the Baltimore Orioles as pitcher instructor and he plays in the off-season in a lot of celebrity golf tournaments here in Miami.
Other note, after his big league years for several seasons he worked as a pitcher coach in the Puerto Rico Winter League.
Unfortunately I do not have neither a phone numbe or e-mail for him.
Best Luck!

With Yuniesky Betancourt of Cuba and Jose Lopez and
Felix Hernandez of Venezuela already entrenched with
the Mariners, director of international scouting Bob
Engle and his staff are continuing to scour Latin
America for top-shelf talent.
Among the latest finds is right-handed starting

Friends,
It is a real shame how a reporter can come up with some many words with so much
misinformation. This is a very inaccurate article which surrounds the
differences between both bigleaguers, which is a very personal matter that just
belong to both of them.
I think this witer broke some of the unwriten "codes" by publishing and make
bigger what is going on between Renteria and Cabrera in a very irresponsible
way.
I personally visited the Colombian league last season and I was very surprised
about what I saw: a developing league witha lot of potential and lots of
enthusiams from each and every person involved. Their goal is to reach the
Caribbean Series competition and a World Baseball Classic. The region where
they play is a safe and touristic place (Cartagena and Barranquilla) and has
nothing to do with the Colombian guerrillas, that Arangure made reference, and
it is a very safe place even compared to some other major cities in Latin
America. The Colombian League has made clear their frustration with this
reporter because they showed him a very positive side of Colombia and the result
was a very deep tergiversation of the story.
I encourage you to get more information and even to visit Colombia and their
winter baseball for you to see their advances and honest baseball work. The
problems of Cabrera and Renteria are very personal and should not become mixed
with the work of the people who make baseball happen there.

This is a practice, that although has limited years in the last years (since dominican players they were discovered), does 10 and more common era. The benefit was for scouts, that signed to the players diminishing their age, because has additional bonus according to their ascent in the minor leagues . It was common to see many Latin players of short career, they signed in one season and in two maximum arrived at AAA or Major Leagues, but its longevity was short, because they got to sign with but of 20 years of age, but they are register appear like of 16 or 17.
In our revision of SABR Minor Encyclopedia, we updated some of those data.

We can create a good discussion about this news about Tejada....but was due respect this is not new news among Dominican stars......remember that nowadays Dominican players (and probably that will happen too with Venezuelan players in the future) is that they have to come forward with real papers and real facts due to US Homeland Security issues.....

PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- Houston Astros shortstop Miguel Tejada has told the team he's actually 33, two years older than he's listed in the club's media guide and other baseball records.
Saying he wanted to rid himself of a burden, Tejada approached general manager Ed Wade and asked to correct misinformation he gave the Oakland Athletics when he signed in 1993.
