PRETTY much everyone - Major League Baseball players,
the sport's world governing body, Democrats in
Congress, sports columnists, foreign politicians and
even many fans - has ridiculed the United States for
refusing to allow the Cuban national team to travel to
American soil to play in the inaugural World Baseball
Classic this spring. I appreciate the fans' desire to
see some of the finest players in the world, but it
hardly stretches the truth to say that those who want
Cuba to participate are asking to be entertained by a
team of slaves.

Palmeiro Cites His Own Naïveté and Ponders Mystery of
It All
By MURRAY CHASS, NEW YORK TIMES
Published: December 28, 2005
RAFAEL PALMEIRO doesn't know. He doesn't know if he
wants to continue playing the game he has played for
the past 19 years, and he still doesn't know, he said
yesterday, how steroids got into his body and prompted
a positive test. The two unknowns could be linked.
Given the way last season ended for him - the stunning
suspension, the poor performance upon his return, the
injuries that gave the Baltimore Orioles an excuse to
send him home - Palmeiro, a free agent, would ideally
like to play another year or two, bat .300 and hit 30
home runs or so each season.

Lugo linked to phone-card scam
By DAMIAN CRISTODERO, Times Staff Writer
Published December 25, 2005
Salvador Delgado said major-league players from the
Dominican Republic are viewed as "heros" by their
countrymen. But Delgado said some of those countrymen
in the New York area are feeling ripped off, and some
of baseball's biggest names, as well as Devil Rays
shortstop Julio Lugo, are accused of being involved.
Delgado, an attorney representing convenience store
owners who say they unknowingly sold defective phone
cards advertised by the players, filed a $35-million
civil lawsuit.

Cuba plans donation if allowed in Classic
By Anne-Marie Garcia, The Associated Press
HAVANA — Hours after U.S. baseball officials reapplied
for a permit that would allow Cuba to join next year's
inaugural World Baseball Classic, the island's
communist government said it would donate any money
received at the tournament to hurricane victims.
Officials from Major League Baseball and the Major
League Baseball Players Association reapplied Thursday
to the U.S. Treasury Department's Office of Foreign
Assets Control, seeking permission for Cuba to play in
the 16-team tournament, scheduled for March 3-20.

Give baseball fans the gift of Cuba
It's time to remember that the WBC is about a game
by Mike Bauman, MLB.com
For Christmas, I want Cuba to be allowed to play in
the World Baseball Classic.
It is a good gift request, is it not? It is seasonably
selfless. I am not asking for sweaters, socks or team
paraphernalia. You can ask members of my immediate
family. I will write a letter to Santa Claus if that
is necessary.
The inaugural WBC is supposed to be a showcase of the
16 most prominent baseball-playing nations in the
world. Whether some of us like it or not, Cuba is one
of those nations. Playing this tournament without Cuba
would be like proceeding with the American League West
schedule without including the Seattle Mariners.

Baseball Set to Continue Fighting Ban of Cuba

Six and a half years ago, Peter Angelos was
instrumental in helping Cuba's national baseball team
visit the United States to play the Baltimore Orioles,

worked with the Clinton administration to make the
delicate arrangements that enabled the Cubans to
travel here and play in Baltimore.
If the Cubans had received money for the games, it
would have violated the United States' embargo on
Cuba.

December 15, 2005 United States Says No to Cuba's Bid to Play By MURRAY CHASS
The United States Treasury Department has thrown the first curve at the World Baseball Classic.
The department's Office of Foreign Assets Control notified Major League Baseball on Tuesday that Cuba would not be allowed to have a team in the inaugural classic, which is scheduled to be played in March.
"We just received notice yesterday," Paul Archey, senior vice president for international baseball matters, said last night. "We're obviously disappointed in the decision, but we're going to continue to look into it and see what we need to do to have it changed, if at all."
Officials involved in the planning of the world tournament said the reason for keeping Cuba out was unclear, but it appeared to be linked to the possibility that if the tournament made a profit, the Cuban team could take American dollars home to its island, which is what the Cuban embargo is meant to prevent.

Baseball Is Eyed by Congress Over Plan To Let Cuba
Play
By MEGHAN CLYNE - Staff Reporter of the Sun
December 12, 2005
WASHINGTON - Baseball is in Congress's crosshairs
again - and this time it's not performance-enhancing
drugs, but Communist Cuba's participation in an
upcoming international tournament sponsored by Major
League Baseball that is under fire from Capitol Hill.
Cuban-American leaders in Congress are urging the
league's commissioner, Allan "Bud" Selig, to rescind
an invitation to the Castro dictatorship to field a
team for the league's inaugural World Baseball
Classic. The members of Congress want instead to allow
free Cubans to represent the island nation. The Bush
administration, too, is being pressed to deny the
league's application for a license that would permit
Cuba - a State Department-identified state sponsor of
terrorism, subject to a Treasury embargo - to
participate in the tournament.

M's, Venezuela up in arms over Felix
By Larry Stone, Seattle Times staff reporter
Felix Hernandez wants to represent his native
Venezuela in next spring's much-hyped World Baseball
Classic. The Mariners don't want to risk the most
valuable arm in the organization, which they view as
too tender at age 19 for the rigors of an intense
international tournament.
Thus lies the seeds of a dilemma. The Mariners have
filed an official objection to Hernandez's potential
participation in the World Cup-like event, but a
source close to Hernandez said Thursday night the
right-hander was hoping to pitch for his homeland

Castro OKs Cuba to play against US baseball stars
Thu Nov 24, 2005 4:47 PM ET
By Nelson Acosta
HAVANA (Reuters) - President Fidel Castro has given
the go-ahead for Cuba to play in the World Baseball
Classic next March, vowing a clash between Cuban
amateur sport and American professionalism that has
lured away many Cuban stars.
The 16-nation World Cup-style baseball event is the
first international tournament to include major-league
players and will begin on March 3 in Tokyo and end in
San Diego three weeks later.
Cuban involvement had been in doubt for an event that
will be played mainly in the United States, Castro's
ideological foe and a magnet for the defection of
communist Cuba's best players attracted by
multimillion-dollar contracts.

Mets' Soler Gets His Visa
By Matt Meyers, Baseball America
November 3, 2005
It took almost 14 months, but the Mets were finally
able to get Cuban righthander Alay Soler a visa to
come pitch in the United States.
The 26-year-old originally defected from Cuba in
November 2003 to the Dominican Republic, where he
received asylum. The following September, he signed a
three-year contract worth $2.8 million major league
contract with the Mets. The Mets hoped Soler would be
able to help their major league club at some point
during the 2005 season, but he was unable to obtain a
visa and remained in the Dominican Republic, pitching
at the Mets' Dominican academy.

Guillen's victory inspires Venezuelans
By becoming the first Latin American manager to win

CARACAS, VENEZUELA – In scenes that echoed
celebrations on Chicago's South Side, car horns
blended with shouts and firecrackers as Caracas
motorists pumped their fists into the night air. A
truck adorned with white socks hanging from every
window chased a line of cars covered in slogans
venerating native son Ozzie Guillen, manager of the
world champion Chicago White Sox. Packed sports bars
roared for "Ozzie's boys."

Guillen's style fits advertisers' plans
By Michael McCarthy, USA TODAY
The hottest potential endorser coming out of the 2005
World Series is not a pitcher, catcher or center
fielder. It's manager Ozzie Guillen of the victorious
Chicago White Sox.
Managers and coaches almost never outshine players on
Madison Avenue. But sports marketing executives are
jumping on the bandwagon of Guillen, the rollicking,
41-year old "Wizard of Oz" who's threatened to retire
after leading the White Sox to their first World
Series title since 1917.

Indeed, the Latino Legends promotion was flawed from the outset, and I
can only blame the fans to a certain extent. Fans were given bad
choices, as some of us mentioned from the beginning over 2/3rd of those
who appeared on the ballot had played since the 1980s. The fact MLB did
not use historians to compose the ballot should compel use to do our
own Latino Legends team as a committee of SABR and then send a press
release out announcing the team. At the very least a player should have
ten years experience before they are on a Legends ballot. The travesty
of this Promotion is that you have Hall of Famers who realistically had
no shot of being selected, i.e. Cepeda and Perez at 1b, Aparicio at ss,
Lefty Gomez and Martin Dihigo as Pitchers. This shortchanges the
pioneers and creates the image that Latinos are recent arrivals to the
game when the history stretches back well over a 100 years.
There is no discussion, regarding that Pujols is not a legend and i want to
see his numbers by 2012. First base got to be Orlando Cepeda or Rafael
Palmeiro. If Pujols was considered with only 5 years, why Eric Chavez was not
considered for 3rd base. Edgar is the DH . Rod Carew play less that 1100 games
in second then Robbie, Carew play more in first base 1184 games. He won 7
Batting Titles, no Gold Glove, Alomar 10 Gold Gloves, Average over .300 and
best numbers in every category except triples.
Pitchers, above Fernando
Valenzuela you have to considered Luis Tiant, Mike Cuellar and Dennis
MArtinez.
Longevity factor have to be considered. There are players ,
with the numbers they have today, maintaining that consistency (not easy) will
reach the level of a legend.
The list submitted for voting was
limited.

Major-league steps for Latinos on, around diamond
by Gary Thorne, USA Today
Major-league steps for Latinos on, around diamond
We often speak of players in baseball — and other
sports — having breakthrough years. This year was a
true breakthrough year for Latin Americans in the
majors, a corner turned that will resonate in the game
forever.
In becoming the first Latino manager to win a World
Series, Ozzie Guillen, a native of Venezuela, has
become perhaps the most visible part of this breakout
year. However, there was far more to it than Guillen's
job and heritage.

'Latino Legends' strike out in Guillen's mind
By Chris Jenkins, UNION-TRIBUNE STAFF WRITER
October 27, 2005
HOUSTON – Introduction of the "Latino Legends Team"
before Game 4 of the World Series last night was met
with harsh criticism from Chicago White Sox manager
Ozzie Guillen – but not because he wasn't on it.
Guillen took exception to the entire infield – first
baseman Albert Pujols, second baseman Rod Carew,
shortstop Alex Rodriguez and third baseman Edgar
Martinez – selected by a vote of baseball fans.
"Pujols? Pujols?" Guillen said. "He is too young.
(Orlando) Cepeda's the man at first base."

Hello -- I share Jorge's disappointment with the list.
The 'younger' players selected, in many ways, did not
surprise me.
The real issue, I think, is that the fans were the
ones responsible for casting ballots. MLB was
responsible for creating the list, and that's a whole
other issue altogether.
The fans may have selected the players on that list
because those guys are the ones in the fans' most
recent memory. And perhaps this is really a call for
us, the SABR Latino committee and Latino baseball
historians and writers, to crank up our efforts to
educate the masses on the real 'Legends.'
This is not to take anything at all away from the
recent players, I admire them greatly for their
accomplishments and bringing the Latino cause to the
forefront.
But, the bottom line is, we need to continue our
education mission. We need to take it upon ourselves
to tell the tales of the pioneers, the real 'Legends.'
Those players, I'm sure, would be the first to admit
that they stand on the shoulders of those that came
before them. Without them, they would not be.
