Following my note mentioning Papa Joe Cambria, Anthony Salazar composed the following list, which I've edited as follows:
JC- = signed by Joe Cambria
*** = signed by ??? (your help in identifying the signing scout is appreciated)
I have additional comments which follow Anthony's edited list. (I'm sending this as an HTML enabled email, in Courier New font so that the columns line up. I apologize if the text reflows on your screen.)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ << I had made a special mental note about the work of Papa Joe and his work with the Senators.
Check out this list of Latino players added to the Senators rosters (1913-68):
***Merito Acosta OF 1913 ***Jacinto Calvo OF 1913 ***Jose Acosta P 1920 ***Ricardo Torres C 1920
JC-Roberto Estalella OF 1935 JC-Fermin Guerra C 1937 JC-René Monteagudo P-OF 1938 JC-Alejandro Carrasquel P 1939 JC-Gilberto Torres P-IF 1940 JC-Roberto Ortíz OF 1941 JC-Preston Gomez IF 1944 JC-Oliverio “Baby” Ortiz P 1944 JC-Luis Suarez IF 1944 JC-Santiago Ullrich P 1944 JC-Rogelio Valdes C 1944 JC-Armando Roche P 1945 JC-José “Tony” Zardon OF 1945 JC-Angel Fleitas SS 1948 JC-Ramón Garcia P 1948 JC-Julio Gonzalez P 1949 JC-Sandalio Consuegra P 1950 JC-Conrado Marrero P 1950 JC-Rogelio Martínez P 1950 JC-Julio “Jiqui”Moreno P 1950 JC-Carlos Pascual P 1950 JC-Francisco Campos OF 1951 JC-Willy Miranda SS 1951 JC-Mike Fornieles P 1952 JC-Raúl Sánchez P 1952 JC-Pompeyo Davalillo SS 1953 JC-Carlos Paula OF 1954 JC-Camilo Pascual P 1954 JC-Julio Bécquer 1B 1955 JC-Juan Delís IF-OF 1955 JC-Wenceslao González P 1955 JC-Pedro Ramos P 1955 JC-Jose Valdivielso IF 1955 JC-Webbo Clarke P 1955 JC-Evelio Hernández P 1956 JC-Ossie Alvarez IF 1958 JC-Zoilo Versalles SS 1959 JC-Rudy Hernández P 1960 JC-Hector Maestri P 1960 Paul Casanova C 1965 (signed by John Caruso) Bill Haywood P 1968 (born Panama, signed out of U-N.Carolina)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The following Latin players were also signed by Papa Joe. Bert Cueto 1961 (Twins) Marty Martinez 1962 (Twins) Tony Oliva 1962 (Twins) Sandy Valdespino 1965 (Twins)
I also credit Cambria as signing these American-born ballplayers, some while he was owner/general manager of the Albany ballclub of the Eastern League. All debuted with WASH AL, except where noted:
Jake Powell 1930 Ray Prim 1933 Allen Benson 1934 (signed from House of David ballclub) Reese Diggs 1934 Hugh Mulcahy 1935 (Phillies) Rusty Peters 1936 (Phillies) George Case 1937 Joe Krakauskas 1937 Mickey Livingston 1938 George Myatt 1938 (Giants) Walt Masterson 1939 Johnny Welaj 1939 Early Wynn 1939 Paul Masterson 1940 (Phillies) Bill Hart 1943 (Giants) Eddie Yost 1944 Joe Cleary 1945 Lou Grasmick 1948 (Phillies)
He also shares credit in the signings of Babe Phelps, Mickey Vernon, Gil Goan and Pete Runnels.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The next list of Latino ballplayers have also been attributed to Joe Cambria, but debuted elsewhere. As these were submitted to me without a source cited, I'm seeking corroboration or correction, if needed. It is conceivable that Naranjo, for instance was signed for the Pirates by Howie Haak, who also spent time in Cuba (Lino Donoso, Ramon Mejias, Ed Bauta, etc)
Adrian Zabala 1945 (Giants) Luis Aloma 1950 (White Sox) Vicente Amor 1955 (Cubs) Cholly Naranjo 1956 (Pirates) Freddy Rodriguez 1958 (Cubs)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The first list above of pre-1935 Latino Washington Senators includes three men (Calvo, J Acosta, Torres) who also appeared in the Negro Leagues. Other pre-integration players in this category (but did not play in Washington) are Raphael Almeida, Armando Marsans, Mike Gonzales, Al Cabrera, Dolf Luque, Pedro Dibut, Mike Herrera, Oscar Estrada, Izzy Leon. Almeida and Marsans path to the big leagues is well documented, and I credit Frank Bancroft and Clark Griffith as the persons instrumental in their signing with the Cincinnati Reds. Any information for others on this list would be especially appreciated.
Lastly, I'm interested in knowing the names of Cuban nationals who assisted Cambria with his work in that country.
I'm a new member of the discussion group. I'm doing some research about latino baseball novels. I would like to know if anywone knows writers who incoporate baseball in their fiction. I'm aware of Sergio Ramirez, Alejo Carpenter and Leonardo Padura. Do you know anyone else?
Excuse me for the poor quality of me english, this is not my first language,
Thanks you,
Michel Nareau

Anthony - thanks for setting up this discussion list. I look forward to the next newsletter.
The SABR Scouts Committee have a few collaborative research activities that could benefit enormously from the expertise that resides within this group. We have two ongoing database projects - the Who-Signed-Whom database and the All-time Scouts Register - looking for volunteers to help us fill in the gaps in what is known in these areas. We also plan to publish a compilation of scouts bios along the lines of Deadball Era Stars which will include a handful of Latino subjects; ie Papa Joe Cambria, Epy Guerrero and more. If you're interested, please drop me a note offlist.

Hi Claudia,
Yes, we shall insert a place for research needs. The
value of the committee as a research network is of
paramount importance.
What else do folks feel is important to include in the
publication? I thought about suggested readings as
well.
For real in-depth reading, check out:
Guevera, Arturo and Fidler, David. Stealing Lives:
The Globalization of Baseball and the Tragic Story of
Alexis Quiroz. Bloomington: Indiana University
Press, 2003.
Regalado, Samuel. Viva Baseball: Latin Major

University of Illinois Press, 1998.
Wendel, Tim. The New Face of Baseball: The One
Hundred Year Rise and Triumph of Latinos in Americas
Favorite Sports. New York: Rayo/HarperCollins, 2003.
I've also enjoyed all of Pete Bjarkman's stories as
well.
thanks,

I would hope the next newsletter would feature a section for people to list their research needs. Previous LAC newsletters haven't emphasized the value of the committee as a research network.
Good Afternoon,
I thought I would throw it out to the group, and ask
that if you have any news you would like to share with
our fellow committee members in the newsletter, to
please let me know (personally --
salazar8017@...).
Has your publication won or been nominated for an
award? Have you been in the news? What kind of
research have you been up to? Who needs help with a
project?
I hope to have the newsletter wrapped up within the
next week. Distribution should come towards the end
of the month.
Also, thanks go out to Jose Ignacio and Ralph Maya
with their answers on the native Cuban managers trivia
question.
Thank you for your continued support and interest in
the Latin American baseball committee. Let's keep the
chatter going!
warm regards,
Anthony

ADIOS AL DIVINO LOCO RUBEN GOMEZ
Angel Torres
ATorres@...
Former ballplayer Ruben Gomez, known in his country as
"The Divine Madman", passed away on Monday July 26 at
the age of 77. Considered the best pitcher in the
history of Puertorican baseball, and known also as a
good hitter, he died at the Intensive Care unit of the
University Hospital. Maria Ortiz, his widow, informed
that he had been unconscious since before the end.
Thrre months ago Gomez had been diagnosed as having
cancer, and he had had a kidney removed.
Gomez was born in the southern township of Arroyo, on
July 13, 1927, and he reached the Majors in the
fifties. In 1954 he was 17-9 with a 2.88 ERA and 106
strikeouts in 221 innings; he was a key contributor in
the 1954 World Championship for the New York Giants.
He won the third game of the Fall Classic 6-2 against
Mike Garcia of the Cleveland Indians, relieved by
knuckleballer Hoyt Wilhelm in the seventh inning. He
also played in San Francisco, Philadelphia, Cleveland
and Minnesota.
The Divine Madman spent 14 years in the Big Leagues,
until 1967, with a lifetime record of 76-86 and an ERA
of 4.09.
He was involved in a famous incident on September 6,
1953, when he was pitching against the Brooklyn
Dodgers. That year Carl Furillo was on his way to
winning the batting championship with a .344 mark;
manager Leo "The Lip" Durocher ordered Gomez to send a
pitch near the ear of the "Rifle" (as he was known
because of his arm). Furillo was hit in his wrist
because he lifted his arms to shield himself from the
pitch. The Dodger outfielder did not say anything, he
just went to first base. However, with the count 3-2
on the next batter, he took off and ran into the Giant
dugout and grabbed Durocher around the neck trying to
strangle him. Monte Irvin, trying to separate the
fighters, broke one of Furillo's fingers in his left
hand, and he was out for the rest of the season.
In Puerto Rico he pitched mainly for the Santurce
Crabbers, with whom he debuted in 1947-1948. He also
pitched for the Bayamon Cowboys, with whom he played
until his last year, 1977. In Puerto Rico he is the
winningest pitcher in the history of Winter Baseball,
as he won 174 games and lost 119. His ERA was 2.97.
Gomez was survived by four sons and two daughters in
law.

Latino Managers
As you may have heard, Carlos Tosca was fired as manager of the Toronto Blue Jays. In more
than two years, he compiled a 189-191 record for the Jays.
He was the fifth Cuban native to manage in the
majors. (TRIVIA TIME: Who were the other four?)
In case you're keeping track, other Latino
managers still at the helm (thus far) are Felipe Alou, Tony Pena, Ozzie Guillen and Al Pedrique, who took over
for Bob Brenly, when the D'Backs sacked him recently.
Amaury Pi-Gonzalez is the play-by-play man for the
Seattle Mariners (81 home games) and the San Francisco
Giants (selected home games). He is the subject of an
upcoming interview with the Latin American baseball
committee newsletter.

Fremont man's language of love is baseball
By Melissa Evans, STAFF WRITER, The Aregus
Monday, August 09, 2004
FREMONT -- Amaury Pi-Gonzalez can talk. Any subject
will do: Local politics, entertainment, media.
His favorite topic, though, is baseball. Fitting,
because he talks about it three hours a day, nearly
every day, and he has done so every season for roughly
25 years.
"I'm always looking for people to talk about
baseball," said Pi-Gonzalez, 59, a Spanish radio
play-by-play announcer who has lived in Fremont since
the 1970s. "I'm just another fan."
Another fan who knows a lot, and has seen a lot
through the years. Pi-Gonzalez broadcast for the
Oakland A's for 17 years, including the World Series
years of 1988, 1989 and 1990. He began doing
play-by-play for the San Francisco Giants in 1995 with
KZSF (1370-AM) and he will do about 20 home games this
season and about 80 games for the Seattle Mariners.
He has four engraved gold championship rings -- three
from the Oakland A's and one from the 2002 Giants.
Pi-Gonzalez was named Baseball Spanish Play-by-Play
Announcer of the Year in 1987 and was nominated for
the Ford C. Frick Award that went to former San
Francisco Giants and Oakland A's announcer Lon
Simmons, who was inducted last month in Cooperstown,
N.Y.
Pi-Gonzalez was inducted this year into the Cuban
Sports Hall of Fame in Miami -- the city to which he
moved as a 16-year-old refugee from Cuba, where
"baseball is everything," he said.
Like most little boys, Pi-Gonzalez dreamed of becoming
a professional baseball star. But, he admits, his mom
caught him one day using a broomstick as a microphone
instead of a bat.
The seed was planted, and after beginning his career
as a newspaper reporter, covering everything from
entertainment to sports, Pi-Gonzalez listened when a
friend told him he had a unbelievable voice.
"I guess he was right," Pi-Gonzalez said.
He has tons of tales from his years in baseball: The
chats with former Giants Manager Dusty Baker at Cuban
restaurants on road trips, enduring the 1989
earthquake during the Bay Bridge World Series and
fighting for scoops on scandals that have rocked the
sport through the years.
One of his challenges now is filling air time for his
Mariners broadcasts; the team will likely lose 100
games this season.
"How do you keep people entertained when a team is
losing 8-0?" Pi-Gonzalez said. "It's not easy
sometimes."
Still, he feels like the luckiest person alive, he
says.
"I get to do what I love every day."

I believe the other Cuban born managers were: Anastacio (Tony) Perez, Miguel Gonzalez, Octavio (Cookie) Rojas and Lopez. I am not as sure of this last one.

From the Boston Globe:
English class a hit with Latino ballplayers
By Andy Nesbitt, Boston Globe Staff | July 22, 2004
LOWELL -- With rain clouds hovering above Lowell's LeLacheur Park
last week and a puddle-soaked tarp protecting the infield, baseball
seemed as though it would have to wait a bit for the Lowell Spinners.
So six players gathered inside a cramped conference room for an
hourlong class that had little to do with the game that brought them
to this country but could eventually help them as they climb toward
their Major-League dreams.
On the teacher's command, Harvey Garcia, Salvador Paniagua, Christian
Lara, Alex Penalo, Heriberto Guzman, and Carlos De La Cruz spoke, in
unison, such words as steak, eggs, potato, and milk.
To the casual observer, the scene looked a little out of place. Here
was a group of young men ranging in age from 19 to 21 repeating
simple words in English. But to the six participants, the exercise
was just as important as fielding ground balls and taking batting
practice.
Under the direction of the Boston Red Sox front office and its
director of player development, Ben Cherington, the six players from
Puerto Rico, Venezuela, and the Dominican Republic, are spending a
couple of hours a week in English class. The program's goal is to
help them learn the basics of the language. "Our ultimate goal is to
put players in an environment where they can succeed, and learning
the English language is part of that," Cherington said. "If they are
not comfortable with their surroundings or if they can't understand
the language, then it will make it harder for them to focus on their
job. What we found is the quicker the Latin players pick up the
language, the quicker they will become more confident in themselves
here in the United States and the more quickly they will be able to
succeed."
The Red Sox hold similar classes at their baseball academies in the
Dominican Republic and Venezuela. Feedback from teachers on the
progress of each student determines how long one must attend class.
Most, if not all, Major League organizations have instituted similar
programs at least at their Latin American academies, according to
Cherington.
The importance of learning English was not lost on any of the players
gathered last week. Those who had a better command of the language
were quick to pass on that knowledge to their teammates.
David Ortiz, Pedro Martinez, and Manny Ramirez serve as role models
to the Latino players in Lowell, not only in the way they play the
game but also in how they conduct themselves with the media and their
fans.
Penalo, a 20-year-old shortstop from the Dominican Republic, was
impressed by David Ortiz's home run in last week's All-Star game, but
what stood out more was how his fellow countryman acted after the
game.
"When the game's over, he was talking with the newspaper people and
he talked good," Penalo said. "I like to see how he can communicate
with the people. He can talk like an American. I think it's important
to learn English because you can talk with the people and your
friends and the fans. It's good."
Luis Alicea, in his first year as the manager of the Spinners,
understands firsthand what these players are going through. Born and
raised in Puerto Rico, Alicea admitted he didn't speak English when
he arrived for his freshman year at Florida State.
"A lot of people misunderstand what they say and what they do because
they can't communicate," said Alicea, who added the language barrier
often causes young Latino players to shy away from going out and
eating right so instead they eat only fast-food. "The quicker they
learn to do that, the better they will be."
Alicea said he has often seen Latino players put in a bad light
simply because they are unable to communicate. Alicea believes the
better they can speak with the media the less chance they will have
of being misunderstood.
"You have to understand their background and their culture. Their
culture is very different than it is here," Alicea said. "There are a
lot of things they do here that may rub people the wrong way, but
that's what they know. They aren't dumb, that's just what they know.
If you understand those things, then you can communicate and reason
with the [media]. A lot of times [the media] puts a label on you
with not knowing your background or your culture."
The importance of understanding and being able to speak English means
even more to Salvador Paniagua. The 21-year-old catcher from Puerto
Rico needs to be able to communicate with many different pitchers on
a daily basis, many of whom don't speak Spanish.
"When we go up one more level, [there are] not too many Latins at my
position, so it's very important to speak English," Paniagua
said. "For [speaking with] the pitcher, the manager, the pitching
coach."
Penalo said he just wants to learn the language so he can fit in a
little more in his new home.
"You want to learn for yourself, personally," Penalo said. "When you
go out in the streets or go to a store, you have to know what you
want. If you are in the United States, you want to do everything like
normal people. You don't want to be with a translator. You want to do
it yourself."
This is from the wires:

Cuban now eligible for free agency
Cuban slugger Kendry Morales obtained residency in the Dominican
Republic, making him eligible to negotiate a free-agent contract with
a major league team.
Morales, a 21-year-old switch-hitting outfielder and first baseman,
left Cuba in June on a boat with 18 others, a few weeks before the
wife of White Sox pitcher Jose Contreras defected.
Morales landed in Miami and was granted asylum in the United States.
He later left for the Dominican Republic, where authorities granted
him residency earlier this week.
The move allows him to avoid a special U.S. baseball draft for Cuban
players that would have prevented him from negotiating contract
terms. A Cuban player that acquires residency in a third country is
eligible for free-agent status.
"I'm so happy that I finished this step in the process to get to the
major leagues in the United States," Morales said. "Now that I have
Dominican residence, I will begin hearing offers."
Morales became a sensation in Cuban baseball two years ago. He played
in Havana for the highly successful Industrialists, batting .324 with
21 home runs, 82 RBI and 60 runs scored.
