The Golden Baseball League announced today (11/30/04)
that it has reached a joint operating agreement with
Los Toros de Tijuana professional baseball
organization to become the league’s eighth charter
team. Los Toros de Tijuana will play their home games
in the City of Tijuana. “This is a significant
milestone for our league and is consistent with our
goal to attract international players,” said David
Kaval, CEO of the Golden Baseball League. “The
partnership with Los Toros de Tijuana offers a
tremendous opportunity to reach Hispanic baseball fans
in each of our charter cities and broaden the appeal
of our league.”
“We see the Golden Baseball League as a unique
opportunity to expand the Los Toros de Tijuana brand
into the United States,” said Alberto Uribe, Owner of
Los Toros de Tijuana. “Our team led the Mexican League
in attendance last year with over 640,000 fans coming
out to the ballpark. We believe our partnership with
the Golden Baseball League will generate even more fan
interest and participation. Our team is excited about
the prospects of playing in such cities as San Diego,
Long Beach, Yuma, Mesa and Surprise. There are so many
Hispanic baseball fans in these markets and we would
like to introduce Los Toros de Tijuana to each and
every one.”
The joint operating agreement between the Golden
Baseball League and Los Toros de Tijuana is the first
international agreement for both organizations. Under
the terms of the agreement, Los Toros de Tijuana will
manage the day-to-day operations of the GBL Tijuana
team. Los Toros de Tijuana will operate under the
rules and regulations of the GBL and will continue to
provide a first-class entertainment experience for the
citizens of Tijuana. The Golden Baseball League will
employ all players, coaches, and other baseball
personnel. Los Toros de Tijuana will pay a operating
fee to the GBL and will contribute operating income to
support league-wide operations. The GBL maintains
certain league wide sponsorship rights in this
agreement and will work closely with the team to
explore other business opportunities.
“This is an historic moment for professional baseball
in North America,” said Kaval “It has been 48 years
since a league has successfully operated teams in
these two baseball passionate countries.”
