Jan. 21, 1953: DiMaggio misses the cut

Election to the Baseball Hall of Fame remains the most revered honor in all of sport.

And the standard of excellence that defines the Hall of Fame was never clearer than on Jan. 21, 1953, when Joe DiMaggio failed to win election in his first year on the Baseball Writers' Association of America ballot.

The 1953 Hall of Fame election produced two enshrinees: Dizzy Dean and Al Simmons. Dean, the Cardinals ace of the 1930s, received 11 more votes than necessary, recording 79.2 percent of the vote. Simmons, who starred for the A's, White Sox, Tigers and Senators and finished just 73 hits shy of 3,000, got one more vote than he needed to finish at 75.4 percent. Keep reading »
