Curiously, among the articles now posted to brj.sabrwebs.com, is this
short 1973 study by original Baseball Research Journal editor L.
Robert Davids with the title shown above, but with Becky Bristol's
name shown in the byline. The lead has to do with the 1972 debut of a
Larry Doby Johnson, born 1950 in Cleveland. Bob then goes on to say
that, according to his research at the time, Johnson was only the
third major leaguer to debut named for another famous ballplayer, the
other two being Rogers Hornsby McKee and Charles "Chuck" Klein Stobbs
The first subsequent player to add to the list that comes to mind for
me is Willie Mays Aikens (not to be confused with the fictional Willie
Mays Hayes), and then I recalled seeing that Bob had published an
update which indeed does make mention of Aikens. That update can be
found in the 1981 Baseball Historical Review on p59, but is not (yet)
posted to brj.sabrwebs. I'm not sure if, in the intervening 27 years,
other players should be added to the list.

With regard to the event that first prompted Bob to consider the
question (Larry Doby Johnson's debut), I've often wondered about the
player whose name is most closely associated with Doby. A question
that I would have for fellow SABR members would be whether or not
there is a connection between these Latino major leaguers whose first
or middle name is Robinson to one Jack Roosevelt Robinson.

And additional players found in the SABR Minor League Database at:

Robinson Jose Cespedes
Robinson David Chirinos
Robinson F. Dotel
Robinson Fabian
Robinson Garces
Robinson R. Gonzales
Robinson A. Mojica
Robinson Ramon Morel
Robinson Reyes
Robinson Enrique (Marty) Romero
Robinson Garcia Tejeda

Incidentally, members that enjoy the study of baseball names and
nicknames in particular should review some of the early work by James
Skipper, Jr. now posted to brj.sabrwebs. Here's one such article from
1981: http://tinyurl.com/4r7jlj

Indeed Robinson Cano was named after Jackie Robinson, since his father, Jose, a former major leaguer, was always a big Jackie Robinson's fan. Actually, Cano...
