Ex-Giant says to reserve judgment on Cepeda

After his 1975 federal conviction for transporting
marijuana, Orlando Cepeda became an outcast in his
native Puerto Rico, whose citizens felt betrayed by
his actions. It took him 15 years to rehabilitate his
image, and when he was elected to the Hall of Fame in
1999, Puerto Ricans embraced him again.

Now, following his arrest last week in Fairfield for
allegedly possessing marijuana, another substance that
police believe was cocaine or methamphetamine and a
syringe, reports from Puerto Rico suggest many there
feel doubly betrayed. One of his compatriots, former
Giants outfielder Candy Maldonado, acknowledged the
hit Cepeda has taken back home but begged everyone to
reserve judgment until the case is adjudicated.

Orlando Cepeda May Face Drug Charges

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) -- Prosecutors are weighing
possible drug charges against baseball Hall of Famer
Orlando Cepeda after the California Highway Patrol
forwarded its investigation Friday.

The former San Francisco Giants star was arrested
Tuesday after a CHP officer discovered marijuana and a
white powder substance in his 2001 Lexus. CHP
officials said the white power appeared to be cocaine
or methamphetamine, although it was still being
tested.

Hall of Famer Orlando Cepeda Arrested

Hall of Famer Orlando Cepeda was arrested after a
California Highway Patrol officer pulled him over for
speeding and discovered drugs in the car.

The former San Francisco Giants star was stopped about
3 p.m. Tuesday after his 2001 Lexus was clocked going
83 mph in a 65 mph zone on Interstate 80 in Cordelia,
about 40 miles northeast of San Francisco, the CHP
said.
