March 5 (Bloomberg) -- Luis De La Cruz digs into the
batter's box with his feet spread wide. His red St.
Louis Cardinals jersey fits snug on his lean,
5-foot-9-inch frame. Scouts and coaches peer at him
through a chain-link fence along the third base line,
evaluating his every move on this November morning.

The hurler for the Seattle Mariners' academy unleashes
a fastball, and De La Cruz steps into the pitch and
swings, sending the ball over the left field wall and
into dense jungle for a home run.
