Subject: Reliquary News & Notes
Reliquarians:
We are pleased to announce that Jeff Levie's photos from the recent Shrine
of the Eternals 2006 Induction Day have been posted on the Baseball
Reliquary Web site. Here's the link:

In addition, we have posted the text of Samuel O. Regalado's Keynote
Address, entitled "Extraordinary People: The Baseball Reliquary Induction of
Josh Gibson, Kenichi Zenimura, and Fernando Valenzuela." That link is:

Also, we'd like to call your attention to a couple of upcoming events which
surely will be of interest. Artist Ben Sakoguchi, whose baseball work is
well represented in the Reliquary's permanent collection, will be showing
144 Orange Crate Label paintings as part of a group exhibition opening this
month in Los Angeles, California. Of the 144 to be exhibited, a total of 54
are from his "Orange Crate Label Series: The Unauthorized History of
Baseball in 100-odd Paintings." For those who missed out on seeing the
entire baseball series last February at Los Angeles City College, this is a
terrific opportunity to see a substantial number of these paintings in a
single venue. The exhibition, entitled "Politick" and showcasing work by
Judy Baca, Mariona Barkus, Sandow Birk, Robbie Conal, Einar and Jamex de la
Torre, and Zig Gron, in addition to Sakoguchi, will be presented at the
Municipal Art Gallery in Barnsdall Park, Los Angeles, California, from
September 16-November 26, 2006. The opening reception, which is free of
charge, will be held Sunday, September 17, 2006, from 2 to 5 pm. Further
details on the exhibition and opening reception can be found at:

The Baseball Reliquary is delighted to serve as a cultural sponsor/community
partner for the world premiere of Los Angeles playwright/performer Heather
Woodbury's "Tale of 2Cities: An American Joyride on Multiple Tracks," which
will run for 12 performances only from September 30-October 8, 2006 at the
Freud Playhouse on the UCLA campus as part of UCLA Live's International
Theatre Festival. Told in two parts, the ensemble play is about the
transplant of the Brooklyn Dodgers to Los Angeles in 1958 and how the
ensuing neighborhood upheaval in two cities resonates, both then and now,
for three generations of multi-racial characters. Woodbury presented solo
excerpts from this richly textured and dramatically engaging
work-in-progress at the John Anson Ford Amphitheatre in August 2004 as part
of the Reliquary's program, "Legacies: Baseball from Flatbush to the City of
Angels." The now-completed theatrical work is not to be missed and promises
to be an extraordinary contribution to the artistic legacy exploring the
most controversial franchise shift in professional sports history. The
westward move of the Dodgers was a watershed for baseball, heralding an
unprecedented growth in the business aspects of the national pastime, but
also triggering deep emotional reaction on both coasts. For further
information and tickets, visit the UCLA Live Web site at:

We hope that everyone enjoys the final weeks of summer.
Best wishes,
