FYI:

For those in the metro New York area, the New York
International Latino Film Festival will feature a
documentary on the history of some of the Dominican
Republic’s famed ballplayers from the early 1960s,
most of whom went on to play for the San Francisco
Giants: LA REPUBLICA DE BASEBALL: LOS GIGANTES
DOMINICANOS (Republic of Baseball: The Dominican
Giants).

The screening takes place on July 27th at 8PM as part
of the festival's Dominican Night.

In September, the film will be released to PBS
stations via Latino Public Broadcasting to coincide
with the 50th anniversary of Ozzie Virgil's debut.
The PBS show is a 53-minute version.

LA REPUBLICA DE BASEBALL: LOS GIGANTES DOMINICANOS
(Republic of Baseball: The Dominican Giants)
New York Premiere, 98min

Full Color, Video, Spanish Subtitled
Director: Daniel Manatt
Producer: Daniel Manatt

Presented by Chivas Regal and The Dominican American
Professional Alliance
An LPB Showcase Presentation
The Dominican Republic sends more “peloterosa” to
Major League Baseball than any other Latin nation 10
percent of all players in the major leagues. This is
the story of that first extraordinary generation of
players from the Dominican Republic: Felipe Alou, Juan
Marichal, and Manny Mota who overcame poverty, the
brutalities of the Trujillo dictatorship, the upheaval
of the U.S. invasion of 1965, and racism in America.
Their impact, and all that they endured, has
profoundly reshaped baseball and their nation.

Filled with rare archival footage, the film does more
than provide a behind-the-scenes look at baseball. It
is a music-filled, passion-fueled tribute to a people,
a culture and how Dominicans came to influence
“America’s favorite pastime.”
