Retiring #21   Message List
Reply | Forward Message #367 of 925 |
Has anyone been following the movement to retire the
nubmer 21 from baseball? Organizing have been pushing
this for a number of months, much to the chagrin on
Sharon Robinson, Jackie Robinson's widow. She feels
this would diminish the honor (of number 42 being
retired) bestowed upon Robinson back in 1987.

I suspect that the movement will be receiving a little
more attention with the All Star Game being played in
Pittsburgh.

What do people think about retiring #21 in honor of
Roberto Clemente?

It may be interesting to note the origins of the #42
honor to begin with, as baseball sought to honor the
40th (?) anniversary of Jackie's integration. This
came at the heels of the Campanis episode, followed by
MLB hiring Dr. Harry Edwards to looks into baseball's
affirmative action programs and the Jesse Jackson
threat to boycott baseball.

Again, do you think there's validity to the movement
to retire #21 from ballparks across the nation, akin
to Jackie Robinson's #42?

thanks,
Anthony

I think that what Jackie Robinson did, change not only baseball, but US history. If Robinson failed, Clemente would not had participate in the Majors. You...

Listers, It was not my intention to denigrate Clemente's achievements, and I wholeheartedly agree that comparing Clemente to Robinson shouldn't be the point....
