I think Phil Jackson is definetly a plus to the team all he will do is help
them instead of hurting them. Most importantly the Lakers needed a veteran
coach that will teach the team to be unselfish and play together and I think
Phil will get that done.

If he can mesh all those ego's, make Shaq realise
that he isn't star player, coach, general manager,
president and owner of the Lakers, make Kobe realise
that if he goes 1 on 9(includes his team-mates), the
Lakers aren't gonna win, make Glen Rice realise that
his a third option on this team, then make him play
defense like Eddie Jones, get production out of the
power forward spot, and somehow turn two, essentially
back-up point-guard into seasoned Ron Harper type
veterans who lead them to a world championship......
well, if he can do all of that, then the Lakers
should be on-track.

What do you guys think?

C - 'ya,

Gunna.

I think he'll lead them to the championship, b'coz if just Kobe will improve
the half as much, that he improved this year i think that lakers are ready
to win the NBA finals, but of course we could still use a new Magic & Kareem

i dont think the pippen trade will go through, i have heard it reported
that we might deal Rice for P.J. Brown, then trade him for the #2 pick in

It's been so long since I've received mail from this list that I forgot it
existed!

I sure hope that trade doesn't happen. I believe the Lakers destroyed their
long term potential last year by first giving away Nick Van Exel and then
trading Campbell & Jones (who both could be all stars in Charlotte next
season) for Rice. There is not enough shots to go around to keep Rice,
Kobe, & Shaq happy; Eddie Jones happily accepted his role with the team. We
were killed last year by poor point guard play as well. Fisher and Harper
are both best suited for the backup role. And I don't even want to talk
about the horrible free agent signing of Rodman.

Hopefully our two Jerry's have learned from last seasons' mistakes.

Just my opinion,
Richard

Yes, one of the worst things that a-hole Jerry Buss has done is trade Eddie
Jones. And give them Campbell too. All for Glen Rice who does not do
anything on defense. At a time when the Lakers need a strong defensive team
the management is destroying their defensive lineup.

The Bulls tolerated Rodman for so many years, why couldn't the lakers?

Fox I believe can give great offense. And what do you think about the two
new guys: Tyronn Lue and something Patterson? I personally feel Lue is too
small to play. And Patterson did not make use of the start he had against
the blazers a coupla weeks back.

So right now the lakers are havin a real tough time don't you think?

Well, to answer your q abt the playoffs, sure the lakers will make the
playoffs but the question is where. They seem to be stuck in 5th if tey do
well the remaining games maybe 4th. So they'll play Rockets 1st round isn't
that right? Wow, it's not gonna be easy for them at all.

If lakers beat the rockets(assuming rockets are their 1st rnd opponents),
they face either the 1st or the 8th team in the conf. right? That'll be
Portland(assuming portland wins the 1st rnd)

Anyway, I guess there is a possibility that the standings could change but
not much.

Looking forward to your reply.

Ashwin.

One night he is on fire and the next he can't even make a basket. I don't
know what it is, is it his injuries.

maybe that has something to do with Rick not playing right. The Lakers are
not playing that well defense, they should had never traded Eddie he was
they're leader in steals.

Hi,

I would like to start a discussion on the following subject:

Shouldn't Rick Fox get more playing time? He's a great player, good
shooter, defense isn't bad and he gives you good effort. So why can't he
play more? I believe he's good enough to be on the Lakers' starting five.

Waiting for all you guys to reply.

Report: Jerry West to stay with Lakers

Five-year deal reportedly worth $17.5M
Posted: Wednesday September 02, 1998 03:58 PM

RIVERSIDE, Calif. (AP) -- Executive vice president Jerry West will remain with
the Los Angeles Lakers, The Press-Enterprise of Riverside reported today.

The newspaper said it was told by two sources that West had agreed to a five-
year contract worth $3.5 million per year.

West wouldn't comment, except to tell the Press-Enterprise, "You're probably
going to see me around here for a while."

West told the newspaper he planned an announcement Thursday. The newspaper
quoted two sources who spoke on the condition that they not be identified that
West met with owner Jerry Buss and made the deal last week after returning
from a vacation in West Virginia.

Laker officials were not available for comment on the report this morning, and
did not immediately return calls.

West and Buss had a falling out during the season amid reports that Buss
hadn't made deferred payments owed to West. Reports said Buss owned West as
much as $4 million and kept putting off the payments.

West held a news conference late in the season and said he would consider
resigning because every game "is like a trip to the dentist" and he "just
wants to get away."

West was adamant at the time that his differences with Buss weren't about
money, but published reports later indicated that wasn't the case.

Free-agent guard undergoes knee surgery

Posted: Thursday August 20, 1998 07:37 PM

Seals, shown in his old Tulsa uniform, had arthroscopic surgery on the same
knee when he was a college freshman

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Guard Shea Seals, who played in four games as a rookie
with the Los Angeles Lakers last season, underwent surgery Thursday on his
left knee to repair a torn anterior cruciate ligament.

Because of the NBA lockout, Seals said he paid for the operation at St.
Francis Hospital in Tulsa, Oklahoma, with his own medical insurance.

"I'm going to make it through this," Seals said as he prepared to leave the
hospital.

Seals, who is a free agent and cannot negotiate with teams or use their
medical facilities during the lockout, said he injured himself earlier this
summer while playing in a summer-league game at Long Beach State. He had
arthroscopic surgery on the same knee when he was a college freshman.

Seals said doctors told him it would take six to eight months to recover.
"Hopefully, it won't be that long," he said.

The Lakers signed Seals as an undrafted free agent out of Tulsa last season.
They carried him on the injured list for most of the season. He scored only
four points.

Clippers mum on offering Rambis coaching job

Posted: Wednesday August 19, 1998 02:32 PM

After working as a Lakers assistant, Rambis reportedly has been picked to
coach the Clippers

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- The Los Angeles Clippers said Wednesday they have nothing
to say about a report their vacant coaching job will be offered to Lakers
assistant Kurt Rambis.

"As we've said all summer, we aren't commenting on the search," Clippers
spokesman Rob Raichlen said. "When we have something to say, we'll announce
it."

Raichlen said no news conference regarding the coaching job was planned for
Wednesday.

The Clippers job has been vacant since April when Bill Fitch was fired.

The Los Angeles Times, citing sources close to the situation, reported
Wednesday that Rambis was expected to be offered the Clippers job as early as
Wednesday. The paper also said the Sacramento Kings, who fired Eddie Jordan on
Tuesday, were interested in Rambis.

"He is the hardest worker of any assistant I have ever seen," Lakers general
manager Mitch Kupchak said of Rambis. "He continues to ask questions every
day, he watches tape and he is eager to learn. He had to know details [of the
game] more than other players [who had more talent], and that certainly didn't
hurt him. He speaks well and, most importantly, he has been involved in a
winning organization for many years.

Rambis met once with Elgin Baylor, the Clippers' vice president of basketball
operations, this summer and had a meeting recently with team owner Donald
Sterling.

As for the Kings, Jordan was fired as coach after leading the team to a 27-55
record last season. Jordan spent seven seasons in the NBA, including 1981-82
when he and Rambis were members of a Lakers team that won the NBA
championship. Jordan also returned to the Lakers briefly in the 1983-84
season.

RAMBIS INTERESTED IN VACANT CLIPPERS COACHING JOB

(AP) - Kurt Rambis, the former Los Angeles Lakers forward and
current assistant coach, would like to be a candidate for the
Clippers' vacant head coaching job. "I'm highly interested in the
possibility," Rambis was quoted as saying in Wednesday's Daily
News of Los Angeles. "But as of today, nothing's going on."
Former Seattle coach George Karl had been mentioned as a front
runner, but he has decided to pursue television opportunities and
is no longer a candidate. Other potential candidates are Scott
Skiles, a former NBA player and current assistant for the Phoenix
Suns; Indiana assistant Rick Carlisle, a former Clippers
assistant; and former San Antonio Spurs coach Bob Hill.

Los Angeles Lakers team report

GETTING INSIDE

Rarely getting a high pick, the Lakers have managed to find players in the
draft.

Vlade Divac was chosen 26th and gave them seven years at center. Nick Van Exel
was picked 37th and became their point guard for five years. Now he has been
traded and replaced by Derek Fisher, who was chosen 24th.

This time the Lakers selected Sam Jacobson 26th and Ruben Patterson 31st. They
expect both players to make their team.

"We think Sam Jacobson has great possibilities," said Executive Vice President
Jerry West. "He's strong. We think he can defend up front.

"We think Ruben Patterson is an absolutely relentless player. He's got so much
energy. He was one of the better defenders in the draft."

Jacobson is likely to see spot duty at forward and guard. Patterson's playing
time may depend on whether Rick Fox comes back. If Fox signs with another
team, the Lakers would have a vacancy at small forward. If the Lakers don't
sign a free agent forward, Patterson would compete for the job.

Jacobson considered coming out of Minnesota last year but is glad he decided
to stay.

"I grew as a player and a person by staying," he said. "And I became
stronger."

Jacobson is 6-foot-5, 220, with enough muscle to defend forwards and enough
shooting range to play in the backcourt.

Patterson, who played at Cincinnati, is 6-foot-6, 227. Van Exel came out of
Cincinnati with a tarnished reputation but the Lakers liked his talent and,
for the most part, benefited from his presence. Patterson also had some
problems in college, missing the first 14 games of last season while serving
an NCAA-imposed suspension for receipt of improper benefits.

The Lakers don't seem concerned.

Another rookie, Tyronn Lue, was acquired in a trade with Denver along with
second-year forward Tony Battie for Van Exel.

"We won 61 games last season," said West. "We're not looking to blow up this
team. But with these new players we believe we'll improve our chemistry."

NOTES, QUOTES, ANECDOTES

Magic Johnson's annual summer all-star game to benefit the United Negro
College Fund is scheduled for Sunday night at the Forum. Although Johnson is a
part-owner of the Lakers he's allowed to put on the game with NBA players
during the lockout because it is one of five sanctioned by the league.

If the lockout goes into October the Lakers' training camp might not be held,
as scheduled, in Honolulu. If the lockout ends later in the month the Lakers
might settle for a camp closer to home rather than a flight to Oahu, which
requires the transporting of much equipment. The Lakers favor Honolulu but
have also held camps in Palm Springs and Santa Barbara.

Guard Shea Seals, who spent all but four games last season on the Lakers'
injured list, hyperextended his right knee in the Summer Pro League at Long
Beach State. He scored 17 points in 21 minutes and his team led by 70 points
when the injury occurred. Seals missed one game before returning. Two games
later he scored 48 points.

"It was scary," said Seals. "But you just play. You can't think about getting
hurt."

Derek Fisher, who hopes to be the Lakers' starting guard now that Nick Van
Exel has been traded to Denver, has joined an array of NBA players who are
playing informally at UCLA this summer.

Shaquille O'Neal was a courtside spectator when the Los Angeles Sparks played
the Utah Starzz at the Forum and kept a close watch on Margo Dydek, the
Starzz' 7-foot-2 center and WNBA's tallest player...

STRATEGY AND PERSONNEL

The Lakers wanted to trade Nick Van Exel and Elden Campbell before the draft.
They accomplished one mission, sending Van Exel to Denver for Tony Battie and
Tyronn Lue. When the lockout ends, they hope to make a deal involving
Campbell.

FREE AGENT UPDATE: The Lakers' most important free agent is starting forward
Rick Fox. Last season he took $1 million from the Lakers and turned down as
much as $20 million from Cleveland in hopes of winning a championship. Again,
the Lakers won't be in a position to match the offers of others and it is
considered unlikely Fox would do it again.

Once the lockout ends, Fox is expected to receive offers from Charlotte and
Atlanta, among others.

The Lakers are less interested in keeping free agents Jon Barry and Mario
Bennett now that they have four new players coming in from the draft and trade
with Denver.

ROTATION: Starters -- Point guard Derek Fisher (averaged 5.8 points, 4.1
assists and 2.4 rebounds in 21.5 minutes in regular season); Shooting guard
Eddie Jones (averaged 16.9 points, 3.8 rebounds, 3.1 assists, 2.0 steals
during 36.4 minutes in regular season); Small forward Rick Fox (averaged 12.0
points, 4.4 rebounds, 3.4 assists, 1.2 steals during 33 minutes in regular
season); Power forward Robert Horry (averaged 7.4 points, 7.5 rebounds, 2.3
assists, 1.6 steals, 1.3 blocked shots in regular season); Center Shaquille
O'Neal (averaged 28.3 points, 11.4 rebounds, 2.4 blocks in regular season).
Bench -- Guard/forward Kobe Bryant (averaged 15.4 points, 3.1 rebounds, 2.5
assists during 26 minutes in regular season); Forward/Center Elden Campbell
(averaged 10.1 points, 5.6 rebounds, 1.3 blocks in 22 minutes during regular
season); Forward Corie Blount (averaged 3.6 points, 4.3 rebounds in 14.7
minutes in regular season).

MEDICAL WATCH:Guard Shea Seals, who played in four games for the Lakers last
season, hyperextended his right knee in a summer league game. He missed one
game, then came back.

Players union files unfair labor practice charge
JULY 23, 1998

NEW YORK -- Opening a new line of attack in the NBA labor fight, the players
union Thursday filed an unfair labor practice charge with the National Labor
Relations Board that seeks to end the lockout.
The charge alleges that the NBA improperly imposed a lockout without having
bargained to an impasse as required under the National Labor Relations Act.

"The NBA can't call a lockout until games are scheduled to begin," union
director Billy Hunter said. "At this point, any unilateral change, including a
ban on free agent signings, is premature and impermissible under the labor
laws."

The NLRB played a major role in bringing the baseball strike to an end in
1995, finding that owners had not bargained in good faith up until the point
when the players went on strike. The NLRB asked a federal judge to grant an
injunction restoring baseball's old work rules, and the strike ended March 31,
1995, when Judge Sonia Sotomayor granted the injunction.

"The board will determine, on as prompt a basis as possible, whether the
rights of the basketball players, as employees, have been violated," said
Daniel Silverman, regional director of the NLRB's New York office. "We fully
recognize the needs of the parties and the public for a decision without
delay, and we will do our best to meet that objective."

Silverman said his office will conduct an investigation over the next few
weeks, then make a determination what to do next.

If the board agrees with the union, it can ask a federal judge to issue an
injunction restoring terms of the old collective bargaining agreement that
expired June 30.

"NBA players want to play ball," Hunter said. "The players have instructed us
to do everything in our power to prevent NBA owners from delaying the start of
the 1998-99 season."

In its one-page filing, the union said the lockout is not really a lockout,
but rather a unilateral imposition of changes to work rules. The union asked
that an injunction be granted so players can be allowed to negotiate and sign
contracts under terms of the old agreement.

The NBA, served with the papers Thursday afternoon, did not immediately
comment.

The labor battle is now being fought on several fronts.

Commissioner David Stern and Hunter met Tuesday for breakfast and agreed to
resume formal talks. They were to confer again Friday to set a date.

The union has filed a grievance with arbitrator John Feerick on behalf of some
200 players with guaranteed contracts who are not being paid during the
lockout. The league has sued the union in federal court, seeking a ruling
saying it should not have to pay players during a lockout and that Feerick
should be prevented from holding an arbitration hearing on the complaint.

The union has yet to respond to the owners' suit.

Feerick has scheduled a July 30 hearing to hear arguments on whether he has
jurisdiction.

Lockout: Don't look for Shaq to take a stand
JULY 24, 1998

LOS ANGELES -- Shaquille O'Neal doesn't like politics, so count him out of a
leadership role during the NBA lockout.

The Los Angeles Lakers center said Friday the league's major stars may have to
take charge if the lockout intrudes on the start of the season, but apparently
he doesn't count himself among them.

"I really don't know what they're fighting about," said O'Neal, who signed
with the Lakers for $120 million two seasons ago. "I make good money and I'm
happy with my life."

The NBA and the players' union will resume negotiations Aug. 6 to end the
lockout, which is more than three weeks old. One of the issues the sides
disagree on is the Larry Bird rule, which allows teams to exceed the salary
cap to sign their own free agents. The league wants it weakened and the
players don't.

"I would love for them to keep the Larry Bird clause," O'Neal said during a
break on the set of a Nickelodeon television episode he's directing.
"Everything else they're fighting about, I don't really get involved. That's
(for) agents and stuff to worry about. Things I can't control, I don't ever,
ever worry about. That's called stress."

But just as quickly, O'Neal recalls his stepfather, a former Army sergeant,
used to tell him to "be a leader, don't be a follower." The contradiction
doesn't seem to bother him.

O'Neal isn't getting paid during the lockout, but don't feel sorry for him.
He's picking up a nice check for his TV directing debut, which will air this
fall as part of the "Cousin Skeeter" series on Nickelodeon.

"I thought I was only getting $500, but I'm getting much more," he said.

Like many others, O'Neal wonders if Michael Jordan will retire rather than
play for someone other than Phil Jackson. Jordan said he'll wait until the
lockout ends to announce his plans for next season.

"I hope he doesn't leave. I hope he comes back because in order to be a
champion you must beat a champion. I would like to play that role," O'Neal
said. "Michael Jordan is the greatest player in the world. I can say that
truthfully, even though I want to be right where he's at. Certain guys
wouldn't tell you that because of so-called ego, but I don't have an ego."

One role often mentioned for O'Neal is as Jordan's successor, the player
everyone in the world looks to. He isn't buying it.

"There's a lot of great players around this league, but there'll never be a
next. There was never a next Magic (Johnson), there was never a next Bird.
There will never be a next Michael," O'Neal said.

"But in this society we live in, in order for me to get my proper respect I'm
probably going to have to outdo all those guys."

Jordan helped the Bulls win six NBA championships; O'Neal has yet to win one.

"I'll probably have to win seven championships," he said.

O'Neal accepts the challenge.

"I'm not scared of nothing," he said. "I'm ready to go right now."

Los Angeles Lakers
Team Report posted June 25, 1998

by tsn correspondent
SCOTT HOWARD-COOPER Los Angeles Times

Draft day for the team became as much about breaking ties with the past as
starting new ones for the future. That became clear when Nick Van Exel was
traded to the Denver Nuggets for first-round pick Tyronn Lue, who will
challenge to become his successor, and backup power forward Tony Battie.

It was part of a frenzied process for Executive Vice President Jerry West and
his staff that included six players either being picked or moved. The emphasis
on the rookies-to-be, at least, was on the backcourt.

West probably would have grabbed Lue at 26 had he lasted that long, so the
team obviously liked the speedy Nebraska product. Trading for him, while also
getting Battie, a disappointment last season in Denver but still filled with
potential, was just as good for the Lakers because it also meant getting rid
of Van Exel.

"I just think a change of scenery will be good for everyone," West said in
explanation of the end of the five-year association with the all-star point
guard.

If the breaking up comes with emotions exposed, it’s only fitting considering
what had transpired in previous seasons. Along the way, Van Exel went from a
team leader to someone who clashed with coach Del Harris and, most recently,
he angered a few teammates who couldn’t help but wonder if he quit on them
during the conference finals.

That likely stamped his out-bound ticket, for it was an opinion that stretched
all way to the top management. One solution, perhaps the ideal one for the
team, was the proposed trade with the Magic that collapsed early in the draft
when the Sacramento Kings took Florida point guard Jason Williams at No. 7.

It may have fizzled anyway because Orlando, also searching for a point guard,
had apparently decided it would draft Williams and keep him, but there was no
question he was the player the Lakers truly wanted to replace Van Exel.
Getting Lue instead, fortunately, turned out to be a nice fallback.

Sam Jacobson, who they got with the 26th choice, has been compared to Rex
Chapman, a shooting guard with three-point range, athleticism to play above
the rim and size and strength to play in the frontcourt in a small lineup. The
team’s second-round pick, Ruben Patterson of Cincinnati, will be getting his
minutes in much the same role, a hard-working small forward who can defend
some shooting guards.

There are also indications the Lakers are not done, just probably on a hiatus
for a bit, thanks to the likely lockout. Elden Campbell could still be traded,
making the acquisition of Battie all the more critical as long as he develops
into a solid backup this season and worries about living up to 1997’s lottery
billing later.

The second-round selection went to local favorite Toby Bailey, who attended
high school in Los Angeles just a few miles from the new arena the Lakers and
Clippers are scheduled to move in after one more season and then played at
UCLA. But that decision was apparently made on behalf of the Phoenix Suns, who
quickly sent future considerations to the Lakers in order to get their hands
on him.

Magic's showtime now on late-night TV
By Michael White
Associated Press
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
--

LOS ANGELES -- Like any good talk show host, Magic Johnson introduced his
latest guest -- a 6-inch tropical millipede that wrapped itself around his
index finger.
"This is my new ring, y'all," the smiling host told a cheering audience at
"The Magic Hour."

A moment later, Johnson's aversion to crawling things suddenly kicked in. He
flicked his wrist and sent the critter flying. The audience roared.

"It freaked me out," Johnson said.

That was just the sort of spontaneity the basketball great and his producers
want. Since the show's beginning five weeks ago, "The Magic Hour" has been
battered by low ratings and bad reviews. Johnson has been criticized for being
stiff on camera and a weak interviewer.

After four weeks, the format was revised to eliminate the standup comedy
routine and move more quickly to the guests. Johnson is trying to use cue
cards less and ad-lib more.

He is determined to make this venture succeed, the way most of his projects
do.

His NBA career initially ended in 1991 after he contracted HIV, the virus that
causes AIDS. Since then, Johnson has made a practice of reinventing himself --
AIDS activist, coach, comeback player.

In his latest incarnation as talk show host, Johnson is struggling. But even
if "The Magic Hour" fails, Johnson has enough going to keep him very busy, and
very wealthy.

He has a net worth well over $100 million. He said by the end of 1999, he
would be in control of property worth as much as $400 million.

Magic Johnson Entertainment has a deal to produce two feature films: a hip-hop
comedy and a drama set in Louisiana during the era of segregation.

But the heart of Johnson's business empire is a project designed to bring top
entertainment and retailing operations to inner cities.

Magic Johnson Enterprises and its subsidiary, Johnson Development Corp., act
as a liaison between corporate America and minority communities.

His venture with Loews Cineplex Entertainment, the nation's largest movie
chain, has produced some top-grossing movie houses. He has aligned with
Starbucks and the TGIF restaurant chain to open outlets in major urban areas.
And there is his plan to develop inner-city shopping centers.

"The suburbs are built up," Johnson said. "Businesses that want to grow, the
only place they can grow is in the inner city. We know how to put it together,
how to run it.

"There are things that we know that they don't know. You've got to know what
inner-city people like and don't like."

What Johnson and partner Ken Lombard offer is a share of the investment
capital, carefully scouted locations and expertise in minority markets.

Right now, however, "The Magic Hour" is Johnson's top priority. He keeps close
tabs on his business ventures but has turned over day-to-day operations to
Lombard.

Johnson's health remains good, thanks in part to his strict regimen of
exercise and medication to keep the AIDS virus in check, and a typical day
reflects that.

By 6:30 a.m., he's making business calls and reviewing his schedule with
aides. At 7:30, he's lifting weights or riding a stationary bike at the gym,
followed by an hour or more of basketball at UCLA. By 10:30, he's at the
Paramount studio, working on the evening's show. At 7 p.m., he heads home.

Despite the reviews, Johnson is optimistic about the show.

"I think in the beginning, I was scared and nervous," he said. "I'm making it
my show now."

Ruben Patterson, SF, 6'6", 225, Cincinnati

This is a classic case of a player who will probably thrive more in an NBA
environment than he did in college—though he might not get paid as much in the
pros.

Patterson is a true man-child. He's exceptionally strong and athletic and he
plays hard. If he truly applies himself, he could be one of the NBA's better
defensive players in his rookie season.

His offense is a bit behind his defense, but he can slash to the basket off
the dribble and he can get all over the offensive glass. He'll probably be a
late first-rounder, but if he's in the right situation—such as with a West
Coast team that likes to run—Patterson could blossom within a couple of years.

LAKERS REPORT
The Lakers made a pair of deals on draft day, ending up with four new players
while giving up an All-Star. They sent G Nick Van Exel to the Denver Nuggets
for Nebraska guard Tyronn Lue, whom the Nuggets selected with the 23rd pick,
and F-C Tony Battie, the fifth pick in last year's draft and a tremendous
disappointment. The Lakers also traded UCLA guard Toby Bailey to the Phoenix
Suns for future considerations after making him the 45th pick. ... In the
first round, the Lakers opted for Minnesota's 6-7 guard Sam Jacobson with the
26th pick. Five picks later in the second round, the Lakers tabbed Cincinnati
forward Ruben Patterson, an athletic player who was impressive at the NBA pre-
draft camp. ... Assistant coach Kurt Rambis has emerged as the leading
candidate for the coaching vacancy of the Los Angeles Clippers.
