Indians deal Bradley for prospect 04/04/2004 3:33 PM ET By Joseph Santoliquito / Special to MLB.com PHILADELPHIA -- The Indians announced Sunday that they have traded outfielder Milton Bradley to the Los Angeles Dodgers for outfielder Franklin Gutierrez and a player to be named later. The Dodgers have not confirmed the deal but are expected to do so Sunday. Gutierrez was the Dodgers' minor league player of the year in 2003, playing center field most of the season for Class A Vero Beach in the Florida State League, after batting .282 with 20 home runs and 68 RBIs in 110 games. Gutierrez, 21, was then promoted to Double-A Jacksonville, where he batted .321 with four home runs and 12 RBIs in 18 games. Gutierrez, a 2003 All-Star Futures Game participant, has shown some speed, stealing 20 bases between stints at Vero Beach and Jacksonville. He finished his Florida State League stay second in the league in total bases (218), in slugging percentage (.513), and home runs (20) and third in extra-base hits (53), while being named Florida State League All-Star team. Gutierrez is expected to start the 2004 season at the Tribe's Double-A Akron affiliate in the Eastern League. The trade comes after Bradley, who hit .321 with 56 RBIs in 101 games last season, left the team on Thursday, one day after he failed to hustle on a popup that fell for a base hit and was removed from the exhibition game against Houston by manager Eric Wedge. Bradley was acquired at the trade deadline deal on July 31, 2001, in exchange for right-hander Zach Day. After a series of incidents over the past 2 1/2 seasons, the organization came to view Bradley as a distraction, culminated in Wednesday's actions, and Wedge said the team could not afford that distraction as it prepared to start the 2004 season. General manager Mark Shapiro concurred. "When we win, we want to make a statement about how we win," Shapiro said. This story was not subject to the approval of Major League Baseball or its clubs.
