Masks figure very prominently into Mexican culture, and as a result, they've been popular with lucha libre since they were first introduced in the 1930s. A mask in Mexican wrestling isn't simply a piece of costume...it represents a wrestler's pride and honor, and it defines them. To lose a mask in a match is truly shameful.
