Subject: Which kite should I buy?

Hi everyone!
I am planning on buying a kite but I have no idea of wich one I should
choose...
I asked before, but I am looking for a few more opinions.
My weight is 85 kg, and since I live in Sweden and we do have snow on the
winter it would be good if it is possible to use it with snowboard, skis and
things like that also. But mainly surfing!
And I also want to know if 2 lines are better than 4 lines, or the
opposite...
Please give me some advice! All the sites I have visited kepp telling me
that their kite is the best, but how should I know!
Hope to get a lot of answers.

Regards,
Fredrik Hindsberg

Hi Fredrik
The best site on the web for answers to all your questions is Hung
Vu's kitesurfing school at:

http://tor-pw1.attcanada.ca/~hungvu/kitesurfing.htm

To briefly summarize, 2 line kites are easier for beginners and
directional or twin tip boards are easier than wakeboards. You can't
go wrong with an inflatable kite from Naish or Wipika or with a good
foil kite from a company like Windtools or Concept Air. Be sure to
choose a recent kite design that is water relaunchable.

Any inflatable.

He is a hint, Wipika is first, then Naish joins the party, then Neil Pryde
joins in, then Challanger, then Liquid Force, then F-one and Peter Lynn
build inflatable looking foil kites.

Do you see a trend here. Those flying bandana shapes are the future of this
sport.

Buy a Wipika or Naish AR3.5 or Free Air that can be flow 2 or 4 line.

Fredrik,

I started out with the Naish AR3.5 in 2 line mode. After I learned how to
kitesurf, I switched to 4 lines. I have tried Concept Air New Wave kites,
Wipika Free Air, and Naish AR5's. I recommend buying the Naish AR3.5 or
Wipika Free Air in 2 line configuration and switching to 4 lines when you
feel comfortable. The Naish AR5 and the new Wipika VARC's should be great 4
line kites once you know how to kitesurf.

The advantage of 4 lines is the ability to depower the kite in gusty
conditions very quickly. 4 line kites also have a lot more range. The only
real downside to 4 lines is that you have to deal with more tangled lines.

Thank you all for the good advices!
I have now decided to go for a Wipika Free Air, since it seems to have a lot
of potential even for a fairly good kite surfer.
I am no quite satisfied with the response I got, and will not bother you in
a while.
Time to try the inlines and the ice skates and the snowboard and the skis!
Looking forward to the snow, and waiting for the summer to come!

Hi everybody

I am looking for a good kitesurfing spot for one week in March. I live in
Switzerland and would prefer a place in Europe. I started this year with
kitesurfing and I don't have much experience. Therefore it should be a
rookie-safe place with lots of space. And of course it should have much wind
there.

Is there such a spot and where can I get information about it?

Have a nice ride,
Bruno

Hi Bruno (and anyone else),

I'd recommend getting in touch with Giangi, a kite/wind/surf judge and all
round great chap who lives in Sardinia, he can arrange lessons, equipment
and a place to stay. Mail him on giovach@...

Sardinia is a beautiful place with clear water, Mistral winds, even surf!
It's cheap and friendly too.

Tell him Aidan sent you!

Wherever you go, have a blast!

Another great place to kite, is El Cotillo in
Fuerteventura, Canary Islands. You can contact Flag
Beach at: WWW.Flagbeach.com they have been very
helpful to me.

Flagbeach itself is OK for learning under supervision
but if you want to rip it up and blast off downwind
then the northwest coast of El Cotillo is a blast.

I have been told that the Alicante region of Spain is
quite good as there is a large bay/harbour where
people kite. Could be worth some research.

Subject: Power loop
martyngilson@...
Send Email Send Email

Had a few goes on a 11M AR5 last weekend and I was
wondering about the correct use of the power loop. I
understand it's importance, whilst hooked in,
stretching the arms will sheet out the kite, bringing
them back in will sheet in. Now, in windy conditions,
should one always be hooked in to the power loop?
This seems to make sense to me. However, it is not
easy.

Where should the sheeting out and sheeting in 'places'
on the power loop be? I mean should full extension of
the arms mean sheet completely out? Should the kite
be fully sheeted in when the power loop is against the
bar or when you are hooked in to the normal loop as
well as the power loop?

Some folks permenantly attach themselves to the power
loop by attaching it to the harness hook. Is this
good practice and what conditions would this work in?

The AR5s are good kites and their complexity is all
part of the vast 'tuning' ability. It's the tuning
ability that allows the kite to be used in large winds
for big air.

Any advice would be appreciated
Martyn

bangthecorner is a new web site dedicated to:

fun.

reports from sailing events from the competitors themselves.

I have seen some guys kite surfing in The Solent(UK) and it looks
like a pretty radical sport.

bangthecorner would love to have some editorial on ksurfing

Thanks a lot.

A few more questions regarding the AR5:

Is there a limit to how much you can depower the
11.5AR5?

When do you know when you are on the depower limit?

How does Flash rig his AR5 in nuclear winds?

When you depower the kite to its limit it, will it
start to flip and fall out of the sky because you are
pulling the front down so much?

Any further advice in rigging the AR5 in strong wind
with the power strap.

I realise that these are quite specific to the AR5,
sorry

pulling the front down so much?
please can you give me some advice with rigging it in strong wind with
the
  power
  strap.
I have been told that you can put more knot in the main line, therefore
pulling the front down even more, I have played with it in light winds
but
not high winds. if this is true please can you advice me how much I can
  adjust it.
Many thanks Rhys Gilson(south wales UK)

The only "limit" is that once the rear lines are slack you can't depower any
more. The kite still flies fine, you just have to pull a bit to tension the
line before the kite starts to turn. It's better to fly closer to the middle
of the wind range, since then you can increase OR decrease power as you need.
When maxed out with the back lines slack, it's only a little better than a
two-line (since you can't depower, but you can increase power without working
the kite).

Apparently he hooks his trim loop semi-permanently to his harness hook. I
don't advise this. In any non-releasable trim loop if you get overpowered &
need to release, you're fucked. With a releasable (permanent OR hook-in) at
least you have a chance to release.

Hello companion Kite surfers,

Down here in Australia we like to improve things all the time. I am
currently designing a new kite and would incorporate suggestions from all
over the world. Please dont hestiate to contact me
directly.

The Australian Dollar value will make our kites very attractive to your
budgets and I hope to get enough input from you guys to make ultimate
upwind kites for a very reasonable cost.

With some luck we will have them to you for next summer.

Hi,

It has been brought to my attention that some of the links to the
Kitesurfing School web site is not working anymore. If you are having
any links to the site, please make sure it is one of the following
"offical" URLs at:
         http://www.attcanada.ca/~hungvu/kitesurfing.htm
or
         http://www.netcom.ca/~hungvu/kitesurfing.htm

Regards,

Hung.

Has anyone seen the new wipika kite perform a backward
re-launch? If you go to the wipika website and click
on 'news' and "Relaunching Backwards Instantly Off the
Water." they play a video clip showing the kite
re-launching! Looks like a wipika crashing but they
reversed the tape.
