Compared to older kite generations:
     - Modern kites' wind range is amazing (both LEI and foils)
     - Excellent depowered capability (I kitesnowboarded with a 12m in
25+, 30+ gusts 2 days ago)
     - The lift for jumping is incredible.
     - They won't just drop off the sky anymore.
     - Improved safety system (swivel bars from KiteLoose, Ocean Rodeo
and others allowing kitesurfers to launch, land and ride unhooked, 100%
depower capability from Windwing, 5th line, etc.).
     - Quality is great.
     - Stability is excellent.
     - Improved durability.

So what's next for kite:
     - Lower prices ?
     - Custom kites ?
     - Fashsion kites ?
     - Speciality kites (speed, high jump, low jump & tricks, wave,
school, etc.)
     - ???

Can anybody give me their two sense on Hammersurf kiteboards. I'm
brand new at kiteboarding and am trying to close in on a board - I
think I want to pull the trigger on the Hammersurf board.

I'm also looking at the bigger boards by Slingshot, Naish and the
production boards by Jimmy Lewis. I will mainly be cruising in flat
water. Any help in narrowing things down is greatly appreciated.

I have been kitesurfing since 1998, been through generations of
equipment and had my fair shares of minor accidents. Even thought I had
no clue of what risks to encounter in the early days, I managed to stay
out of serious accidents due to some very simple rules and common sense
that I practiced since day one. Many years have passed and kitesurfing
is no longer a "mystery" as it was in the early days. Kitesurfing
know-how, teaching methodologies and safety guidelines are very
well-known and well published (web sites such as
http://www.kitesurfingschool.org, schools, books, videos, magazines,
accident databases, etc.). It is no longer acceptable for any excuse of
not knowing what risks to expect in kitesurfing or kiting in general.

I recall awhile back (maybe 1-2 years ago) that
someone posted a definition of the acronym SAFE or
SAFETY that had each letter indicating a facet for
safe kite boarding. If someone has that handy, maybe
it is a good time for a reminder.

Subject: 2005 Update to the Kitesurfing School Web Site
hungvuatnetc...
Send Email Send Email

We have now served more than 260,000 visitors! At this rate, we are
serving approximately 5,000 visitors a month. This rate is pretty
constant in the last 2 years so we expect by March 2006, we will have
320,000 visitors.

This is a major annual update. We have gone through all the sections
and make modifications to all of them to ensure they are as up-to-date
as possible.

We have now officially made http://www.KitesurfingSchool.org web site
"open source" (more info on the Home page).

We have changed the format of the navigation frame on the left to make
it easier to navigate.

We added a new Tricks section to describe the various tricks that an
average kiter can perform comfortably.

We added a new KTM Teaching Methodology section. This is the world
first formal "open source" multi-discipline kite teaching methodology
for all schools or private instructors.

We added a new Feedback section. We have kept all the feedback emails
since 1999 and now we need to clear our emails. So the best place to
keep them is on the web site. So here they are: all the feedbacks we
received since 1999 and more in the future (you will find feedbacks from
Bruno Legainoux, Peter Cabrihna, Don Montague, Jimmy Lewis and many
other well-known kiters there).

We added a new Kite Making section. Kite making is no longer a
mysterious art. So design and make or have someone made your own kite.

We added a new Equipment Deals section.
We added a new Bladder Repair section.

We added a new Winterlude Kite Demonstration Event page (the world first
kite demonstration event to more than 600,000 people).

We added many schools to the schools section.
We added many links to the Links section.
Updated the FAQ section (new photos and changes)
Updated the Equipment section (new photos and changes)
Updated the Equipment Tuning section (new photos and changes)
Updated the HowTo section (new photos and changes)
Updated the LightAir section
Updated the HeavyAir section
Updated the Jumping section
Updated the Landing section
Updated the Speed section
Updated the Finless section
Updated the Rules section
Updated the Safety section (also add "The Art of Staying Alive" sub-section)
Updated the Glossary section (new version)
Updated the Kiteskiing section (new photos and changes)
Updated the Kitesnowboarding section (new photos and changes)
Updated the Kitelandboarding section (new photos and changes)
Updated the Board Building section (new photos of other DIY boards)
Updated the Bar Making section
Updated the Teaching Kitesurfing section

I think that you should be careful when learning to
control your kite on land. Use your knowledge of wind
forces in order to avoid too gusty or strong winds
that could put you in risk.
Then once you feel that you control the kite it may be
wise to look for experienced people near where you
live inorder to ask them for tips on how to kitesurf
(on water). Otherwise think about some nice vacation
in a learning center.

Whatever you do; do not learn to fly with a 14 mtr kite
on land. My advice is to get lessons from a pro or
someone with lots of experience. You will not believe
how fast things can happen with a 14 mtr; and most of them
are not good.

After taking lessons, I bought a 6m kite and spent a lot of time with
it in the water. Did lots of downwind body drags too. Even got lofted
on the 6m once, and I weighed 275 at the time. So you can get into
trouble with any size kite. The smaller kites can get you in trouble
even faster because they are so agile--you just need a lot more wind
to really screw up. Just keep it in the car when the sand starts
blowing across the beach.

If you are learning to work the kite, you are better off with a
smaller one. Small and meduim sizes seem to need about the same wind
speed just to fly. You only need the extra pull when you are riding
the board. I would recommend using a kite no more than 1/2 the size
people are riding on a given day when you are just flying it or body
dragging. That will still be enough kite to pull you out of the water
on a downwind body drag if you work the kite in the power zone. And
do it in the water, not on land, with side onshore winds only. It
hurts a lot less.

If you're flying from land because the water is too cold for you now,
get a dry suit (Bare Polar Heat is highly recommended). We've been
going out regularly here on Long Island, NY in 34F/1C water for the
past few months, and it's no problem at all if you're dressed
properly (and the air is >28F/-2C so no sea water freezing). The
beaches are deserted, so no worries with bystanders. Just no way to
get an instructor out again until later in the spring. Make sure you
have a buddy, though.

Check out the Bestkiteboarding.com trainer...

Nice little 2-liner that can be converted to a 4-liner when you are
ready. Small enough to learn on, but big enough to pull you around.

And only $149.00

Recently Kitesurfingschool.org has released an "Open Source" Kite
Teaching Methodology (KTM) for teaching multiple disciplines of kiting
at http://www.kitesurfingschool.org/ktm.htm

KTM can be copied, used, modified, adapted by any schools in any manner
(including commercial purposes) as long as proper credits are given to
Kitesurfingschool.org and the derivative works are also "Open Source"
and can be used by everyone (more details in
http://www.kitesurfingschool.org/ktm.htm )

Since its first release late last year, KTM have been reviewed and
endorsed by a number of manufacturers/organizations (Best, KiteLoose,
Concept Air, Litewave, Globe Rider (NA Distributor), VL Kites, Kitefilm,
etc.)

We are looking for more manufacturers, schools, organizations to review,
provide feedbacks to KTM, and put their names and links on the list of
organizations endorsing KTM at
http://www.kitesurfingschool.org/ktm.htm#Endorsements .

Please let me know whether you would like to have your firm, school,
organization to be listed on the KTM endorsement List.

Regards,

* We broke the annual update rule ;-) After the major update last
month we noticed that there are lots of thing we still like to do in
this update. So here it is: a minor update less than 1 month after a
major update
     * We got videos now! Thanks to Ronny Basso of Kitefilm.com who has
provided all the direct video links from Kitesurfingschool.org to his
collection of how-to and tricks videos. [Check the Feedback section and
you will notice that Ronny was a Kitesurfingschool.org reader back in 1999]
     * We made another update to the Rules section and added a video link
     * We made a major update to the Tricks section and added pictures as
well as video links
     * We made another update to the How-To section and added video links
     * We added quite a few schools to the School section and removed
some schools which are now closed
     * We added a table of world-wide emergency rescue numbers to the
Safety section
     * We added new feedbacks to the FeedBack section
     * We checked all the links in the Links section, removed and added
some new links
     * We made a major update to the KTM sections, adding more lessons,
discussion group, certifications and credentials and especially the list
of endorsing organizations at
http://www.kitesurfingschool.org/ktm.htm#Endorsements

More to come in the next update...

Hello List,

I am going to Cancun next week 4/16 for a week. I have a 12 meter kite
that I am thinking of bringing. Any recomendations on where to go? I
will be at the Royal Carribean Resort.

I have bodydrug a half dozen times, and flew stunt kites alot in the
early 90's. I have good kite control, but have yet to get up on a
board.

Should I bring my board? Can I rent one? Any good schools in
Cancun? Anyone live down there and want to lend a helping hand?

Thanks

The nearest school is probably http://www.ikaruskiteboarding.com/ around
30 minutes away.

greetings,

My name is Phil Burke and we traded e-mails some number of years ago!
I started kiting on the snow in Late 1997/buggies 1998 and saw Lou Wainman
in 1999.
Stoked ever since!
Now I'm a PASA certified instructor in Ct/NY.
I have referred so many people to the kiteschool. It's a wonderful training
guide.
I just wanted to thank you for all the work you have done over the years.
Regards,
phil Burke

Please note my NEW e-mail address for all
future correspondence!

The spring is easing on and those frontal winds keep coming through. Life
is good!

More good things to come is the FOURTH Islamorada Invitational this week
down in the Florida Keys,
April 20 - 24, 2005.

More about this years events and tons of photos from past years appear at:
http://fksa.org/viewforum.php?f=73
and
http://fksa.org/viewforum.php?f=28

Kiteforum is down temporarily for some upgrading. Need a net fix now? Why
not tune in
your own Florida site and toss out details those epic riding sessions, gear
and travel
questions ... It is all there at: http://fksa.org/

While you are there why not swap stories with the local crew. Individual
forums have been
setup for all four quadrants of the state at:
http://fksa.org/index.php?c=23

The guys put on ANOTHER insane party at Automatic Slims in Ft. Lauderdale.
The photo
crunching is still going on for this one but stay tuned, these shots are
going to be worth a
look! In the meantime checkout the last party, it was great as well!

An overview of the recent shark migrations off the east coast with some
aerial photos too.
http://fksa.org/viewtopic.php?t=555

Wonder about average monthly wind speeds around Florida? There is a summary
of wind
data for specific locations going back quite a few years at:
http://fksa.org/viewtopic.php?t=566

Want to try to figure out when the next front is going to turn the winds on,
is there a
squall line in the works? Checkout the following for some ideas on what to
look for during
the cooler months:
