Subject: What wetsuit for what water temperature?

I just started this summer in Houston and until now I did not need a
wetsuit, because the water temperature was around 80F just a week
ago. With the "cold" front it is dropping now to 65F and maybe
lower... I was wondering if those of you who have had experience
with wetsuits can share what is a comfortable suit - meaning the
lightest and least constricting possible for different temperature
ranges?

Niki,

I live in Houston too, and here's my concept:
Water temp 70-80....shorty
Water temp below 70....either a 4/3 wetsuit or an Ocean Rodeo dry suit; the
benefit of the dry suit is it's not constricting at all (except at the
ankles and wrists and neck), there's no shock of cold when entering the
water, and it's comfortable enough to wear on my drive to Texas City. It is
more expensive (about double a good wetsuit). Charley at windsurfing sports
has both and you can talk with him about concepts (281-299-9199); tell him
Dr. Steve sent you. Have fun on the water!!

I've used their dry suit for two years and it's terrific; the ankle tore and
they fixed it right up. I use the dry suit instead of any wetsuit and am
much more comfortable. Don't know anything about their kites

The water is very cold now and I was surpirse to see a few kiters out at
Britannia around 3:00PM today.

By the time I got my equipment to the beach around 4 something, the wind
picked up to pretty strong.

I rigged a 5.0, launched it and was overpowered, not that overpowered
but since I was a bit out-of-shape, I decided to drop it to use shorter
lines.

So I rerigged the kite with 20m lines and was pretty comfortable with
the condition (average 30 to 35 knots and gust 40 to 45 knots) and ride
until dark.

I suspect the drop from 25m to 20m lines more or less make my 5.0 acts
like a 4.0

P.S., Normally I don't kitesurf after Haloween so this is an exception
for me.

Hung.

Hi Hung, I've been thinking about different length lines and reel
bars and suchlike. Got a few questions:

1) I can imagine two reasons why longer lines might give more power.
First is that the wind is typically stronger as you gain in
altitude. Looking over various sites that give information on this,
though, it seems that the difference in wind speed is pretty minor,
maybe only 10% from 30m to 50m lines. Another possible reason could
be that the increased length allows a larger amplitude sining of the
kite before you have to turn it around. This allows more speed of
the kite and hence more power. Any ideas on which of these reasons
is more important? Or are there others that I'm overlooking?

2) Can't seem to find any manufacturers of reel bars for kitesurfing
anymore. Does anybody know of any? Why have they all gone out of
business?

Cheers, and thanks for the great kitesurfschool.org site!
-Russ

It's more the larger wind window and maybe faster reception and
reaction time.

There were some reel bar on the market; however, the cimplicity of the
normal bar seems to win the battle.

Hung.

Thanks for the advise guys,
I need to look for a 4/3 full suit. I went out on Friday in a spring
suit and did OK in the water, although it wasn't exactly enjoyable at
60F.
Steve, what kind of doctor are you? I am still looking for a good
family/internal medicine practitioner.

Alex Caviglia, accomplished windsurfer and kiteboarder, former president and
founder of Adventure Sports, Inc., the North and South American distributors
for Cabrinha, Neil Pryde, Bic and Tiga, died in hospital Saturday, November
13, 2004.

Alex suffered a severe head injury in a kiteboarding accident one year ago.
Alex fought hard to recover, and was able to express his love for his family
and friends before he left us. Alex is survived by his wife, Silvia and his
children Bianca and Michael.

I would like to extend my sincere feelings of loss and regret for the
passing of this well known and liked man. I wish strength and solace to the
Cavigilas and their many friends in this sad time of loss.

Silvia Caviglia requests that in lieu of flowers, that donations be made in
memory of her husband Alex to "Alex's Bluewater Foundation." The "Alex's
Bluewater Foundation" is a non-profit charitable foundation currently being
formed to benefit victims of watersports related injury. Additional
information regarding this foundation will be posted shortly.

Donations may be sent to:

hey everyone,
I have recenty joined this group and i just recently started one of my favourite
sports being snowboarding this year at the end of the winter as up here where I
live in Canada and I have recently developed an interest into the watersports
but have yet to try any yet. I was wondering because I know all of you are
Kitesurfers and whether regular surfing or kitesurfing would be better for the
summer season. With kitesurfing I didn't know if it would tie into snowboarding
just helping with the upper body strength and helping with turning on a board,
but mainly which one would be easier to transition to. Thanx.

Matt

I recently repairs a couple of board nicks by filling and sanding with and epoxy
filler. Does anyone know what is the best paint to use to finish the job? I've
had people say a 2 part epoxy, 2 part polyurethane, and just outdoor spray
paint.
Thanks

What are you looking for Dave, a kite that flies like last years
Nitro?
Or are you just looking for a good used kite suitable to add to
your quiver?
Do you already have other kites?

$500 is a low price for a kite 1 year old, has it been repaired?
Does it include bar and lines?

The GR kites are OK, as were nearly all 2003/2004 kites.
We have several used kites in that price range, perhaps give me a
call to discuss your needs? Ph 02 9529 6894 or send me an e-mail
with your phone number and I will call you

I have seen many disasters from people buying worn out overpriced
kites from newspapers or auction sites, it really is pot luck, do
you want to take that risk?

Dave: I have the pre-self-adjusting leading edge model. It's pretty well made
and rad
looking (mine is the camo/orange.) It may be one of the last kites where they
spent
production money on complicated sewing to get the look. It more compares to my
high
aspect Takoon than my North Vegas or Rhino2-16. (the later two have more grunt
in the
lower half of their range) The bar is basic.

Price is inviting. I'd ask that he blow it up and hang for 20min to see if the
bladders stay
filled. Then hold it up with the Sun behind it and look for holes.

.....bring a skate and tell your girlfriend to follow you in the car. Have fun.

Hello George,

In the early days, I think that was the primary way guys used traction
kites on the water. As Hung mentioned, Cory has been using skis for
years. He has had a particular advantage I understand in the Gorge
Blowout with a fair amount of downwind segments. I think heard last
summer that a few guys were on skis. So, apparent water skis still
have value to kiters. There is an article about a guy going in 1988,
in "History of Kiteboarding" at: http://www.fksa.org/viewforum.php?f=46

(We are changing hosts today so the site may be slow to load, sorry.)

I am curently working on an interview with Pete Cabrinha for the
"Famous Kiteboarders" series on the FKA site. He described
competiting at a windsurfing competition in France in 1977. Suddenly
this guy plys through the windsurfing area on skis under kite power.
Everyone just stopped and stared. The rider went downwind and vanished
behind a point of land, for ten years as Pete put it. It was Bruno
Legaignoux playing with some early gear in the infancy of kitesurfing.

It is sad news indeed. My sincere regrets go out to the man's family
and friends.

It would appear that the man was caught in an unusually strong wind
gust (reportedly 18 gusting to 68 mph in less than a minute) near the
leading edge of a cold front. This was an extreme, unexpected severe
weather event. I wonder what the susceptability of snow kiteboarders
is like to lessor gusts? What constitutes "excessively gusty" winds
for snow kiteboarders?

I am not certain where snow kiteboarding is at the current time with
regard to weather planning and monitoring. Such preparations and
monitoring have been promoted in water kiteboarding for years as a
result of early accidents. Even with that an unacceptably high
percentage of kiteboarders are still not sufficiently sensitive to
this serious hazard. Excessive gusts figured in 4 of the 5 recent
water kiteboarding fatalities. Some people have little concern over
riding in squalls. I wonder if the same complacence is evident in
snow kiteboarders?

Can anyone comment on what orientation new snow kiteboarders are given
to weather considerations? What do you look out for in weather
planning and monitoring for a snow kiteboarding session?

Thanks,

FKA, Inc.

If a kiter got properly trained using the KTM method than whether the
kiter kites on snow and water, the kiter should have the same safety
knowledge and skill to avoid accidents.

This is a very freaky accident as according to some source, Laurence has
already depowered the kite...

After having read Laurence's accident a few days ago, I started to
ponder why Laurence got in to such accident even thought his kite was
depowered on a leash (as according to some sources).

I was stucked in a winter storm a few years ago in 80 - 100 km/hr wind
(you can see a white wall moving toward you) and depowered my 6m foil
just before the storm hit. Even so, I was dragged slowly by the kite
downwind. I was fully detached from the kite but hang on to the leash
line as I did not want to loose my kite and may create problems for
other people. I was still in that "fighting with the kite position"
until another kiter came and folded the kite for me.

So a depowered kite still has tons of power and apparently has killed
Laurence.

For your own safety, make sure that you have a quick release system that
can release yourself from the kite completely.

Of course, it's best to fold your kite or use a much smaller kite before
the storm hit...

Hung.

Hi There
My husband and I are considering taking up this exciting newer sport,
but we have a few questions. First of all we live in Michigan on a
decent sized inland lake. Both of us have experience w/ wakeboarding.
Here are my questions...
1. Can we share a kite? There is about a 70lb differnce in weight and
6" difference in height between the 2 of us. We were told to get a
12m kite for me and a 14m kite for him- can we just get a 14m kite
and I can use it at a shorter line length?
2. He has experience flying double handled kites, and is pretty good
at it. I have never flown a kite before. Is it totally necessary to
buy a trainer kite? If so, will we ever use it again after learning
the art of being out on the water w/ the real equipment?
3. We live in Michigan and are going to be traveling to South Padre,
Texas in February where we are planning on trying the sport for the
first time. We want to take lessons- any suggestions on good but
affordable instructors or schools down there?

Thanks so much!

I've taken lessons from both South Padre Island Kiteboarding and
Kiteboarding Inc; they're both excellent and recommended. Kiteboarding Inc
goes out on a jetski with you while SPIK stays on shore...you'll learn
quicker with Kiteboarding Inc, but the lessons may be more expensive. You
will never (except to introduce other people to the sport) use your $100 +
trainer kite after your initial learning period; kite skills are critical
though. After your initial learning phase is over (two weeks -six months)
assuming you are 130 and hubby is 200, you will use a 14m as your light wind
kite (10-15mph) and he will use it in high winds only (22-30). I wouldn't
buy anything until after your South Padre lessons. Have fun and good luck!
