Definately try stuff on, before you buy, make sure you get some lessons with the
G2, it flies very differently to the Blade, completely different launch and
landing techniques, don't crash it in the water it can be hard to get back up.

Hi Sara
Waist harnesses are not generally favoured by begginers, male or female. The
reason is that they tend to ride up, regardless of brand, and having the
spreader bar reasing and rubbing on your lower ribs is uncomfortable to say the
least and potentially dangerous (broken ribs if you fall forwards on it).
Women also complain of their chest/breasts getting pinched bruised.
Pro-limit make a complete range of "PureGirl" harnesses in seat and waist, so do
Dakine, their models are called "wahine".
If you can meet up with any other kitesurfers or windsurfers they will be able
to show you how to rig your PL waist harness, but maybe you are better to return
it and get a womens seat harness?.
What kite did you get?

This might seem like a stupid question... and I can ask my instructor next
weekend, but
since I haven't found any information to help me out I figured I'd ask here
too.
I just got my kite mail order and a waist harness and I don't know how to set
up the
spreader and the harness...
The harnesses I've used before had the spreader bar through the straps on one
side and a
hook for the other side. I don't think my stuff came with the hook...
It is a Peter Lynn waist harness and I'm used to seat harnesses, so I'm not
sure how the
waist harness is supposed to fit... but the dealer recommended it because I
told him I was
having trouble finding a seat harness in my lessons that fit around my hips
but went small
enough around my legs (basically fit a for a woman). But I see that DaKine
has women's
seat harnesses that would probably work good.
Anyway... like I said, I can discuss all this next time I have a lesson... but
I'm curious to
know how this all works.
Thanks,
Sara

Hi Bill,
Talk to Kevin at Windpower in Calumet, His windsurfing shop is just
across the street from a nice park with shallow water in the lake:
just NE of Fon Du Lac I think it is on HWY 155.
I am not sure if he gives lessons but I beleive he carrys Naish
kiteboarding equipment.
I know two instructors here in Milwaukee who might possibly be
interested in giving you lessons up there, as long as you weren't
planning on doing it this comming weekend - a bunch of us are going
up to Door County to ride that weekend and they plan on going as well.

Just looked at a map and the windpower shop is in Taycheeda, not
calumet. It is just a few miles outside of Fon Du Lac on hwy 151.

Jim,
Thanks for your reply. I was going up to Oshkosh for the Air Show and I
thought I'd try some kite boarding on Lake Winnebago if there was time.

G'day Kenny
I have it, we sell it for $30AUD, I can airmail it anywhere asap. Otherwise you
should be able to get it from good kitesurfing shops and IKO school, check the

Or a request to the publishers of all the books you mentioned to get them listed
or stocked by amazon, Dymocks, etc
Kiteboarding Vision has an ISBN number and the The Flexifoil Book of Powerkiting
has a refernece to it having a British Libraries listing but no number.
Kiteboarding Vision is a very comprehensive book, the best I have seen so far.

.........Sorry, I misread your intent. 'reaching mass' can be interpted in
investing as the
point of which you do not need more capital to maintain a lifestyle, or, as I
thought it, a
market that has become mature.
Your number's observation may also show an occlusion of the market. Lots of the
fourm
participants have a reasonable level of expirence and perhaps do not have the
desire to
rehash basic questions - very few people seem respond to: "How do I get upwind?"
anymore, whereas when we were all learning there seemed to be more sharing of
information. And, either the lessons are sooo much better (or there are fewer
entrants)
but you don't even hear the question asked frequently?!
There have been some stellar forum posters: Traig, StevieMac, Peter Frank,
RickI, Tinman,
A_Santacruz, PeteTray, dt, Dwight...come to mind, from whom we hear precious
little over
the roar of brand shills and Moonies.
The latest revelation I had never considered (distracted by high/low aspects..)
was
something, I'll atribute to Peter Frank, is the design difference between kites
used in
Europe and the US. It not only makes sense, but would be damn handy in helping
figure
which kite better suits your conditions. I remember thinking how narrow EH's
boards in
Cabarete were when almost every other brand was wider - but if you had (hard
times...) to
kite where it blew hard every day - then you might want a board with more dig.
.....Naaaay with BOOKS. No offense, but there's hardly anything more useless
than a book
on surfing...or skiing....or MTB'ing or any other physical activity I've
participated in. The
best 'kite education' is a few days in Cabarete watching 40-60 people 'DO IT'.
There has
never been anything written that explains how it feels to have your face planted
at
30kph...only to discover: IT'S NOT OVER!
Cheers to you.
Jim

There are already a couple of good books out Hung, although I am sure whatever
you did would be good too.
The "Flexifoil book of Powerkiting" is excellent, and so is the new book from
the IKO called "Kiteboarding Vision".

Subject: [ksurfschool] Re: Have we reached the mass?
Thanks everyone for the encouragement.
I was asking to see whether it's time to spread kiting to the masses
by some other means (e.g. an inexpensive kiting book based on the
material at kitesurfingschool.org - properly edited this time ofcourse ;-)
But Jim seems to have slightly different experience at his local site...
As for colder climate, it seems like nothing can stop kiting to become
one of the dominant four season outdoor sports.
Kiting will never be banned in colder climate (especially in the
winter where even the cops stay inside on days where we clock over 80
or 100 km/hr)...
The popularity of kiting in colder climate will help to make kiting
become more acceptable in warmer climate (there are some bans now) and
eventually become a mainstream sport without all the hassles that some
of us now face (as snowboarding in the past)

I learn something almost every time I head to the beach. I NEVER wanted to
become a
gear head but this damn kite stuff will teach you one simple thing: Take
EVERYTHING you
can carry.
I made a sign - "Take all kites" - because I always get suckered into thinking
it is either
lighter/heavier than it is when I get there. You'll need two kites - at a min.
Take at least two boards: light air and heavy air. The light can be a real wide
TT or a
cheap log and then your 'special' weapon.
Yesterday, I went for a late day, end-of-weekend session. I keep about three
kinds of kite
repair material and four colors in my shop. ...and the lesson learned was:
"take some tape
with you idiot!" I ended up with a 4"/10cm tear in my canopy (which was a
separate
lesson) but the only thing I had with was waterproof Band Aids - so I used them.
(Yes)
On a previous session, I learned that if you put a sandy foot into a tight
binding there's a
good chance you will abrade your instep - hense the reason to carry Band
Aids...along
with a screwdriver, etc. etc..etc. (one of our smarter, local ladies has what
looks like a
church van chocked full of kit - and leaves it that way)
Hey Hung: I'll bet we peaked a while back. Our local crew census is showing a
net loss
from last season. We lost a couple of long-lease retailers within the last 9
months. I've
seen a lot of one-season kiters and few new kites outside replacements by the
established
folks - and only one Best - mine, which is for sale. (Y-11 with bar/lines
$500.USD -
perfect)
It is interesting to watch this battle between price and features: Kia vs BMW.
When I see a
pre-season sale back on the table in peak-season and then the major brands
offering new
5th line type features the spread may become more defined. When the Kia buyers
ask if
they can put BMW-like wheels on their car, you know even discount buyers, post
sale
anyway, end up wanting something more than price.
It's all interesting.... and frankly I'm kinda happy the masses do not know
just how much
fun this really is! I'd rather they keep thinking kitesurfing is akin to Base
Jumping.
Jim
....also add to your pile: a 3-5M trainer and a skimboard or boogieboard for
some
shorebreak slides.
It's been very quiet here. We're in the summer
doldrums now on the west coast of Florida. I think
everyone kiter in Florida except me has migrated to
the a nice tropical windy place in the Caribbean.

.....I have the DaKine PYRO and it is a combo of 9"/23cm bar with 10"/25.5cm
pad, and it
seems fine - but then I've never had something to directly compare it to.. The
harness is a
Medium and I'm a 34"/86cm - also seems fine, when you'd expect I'd need a large.
The
sizes seem pretty pasta forgivable. (I have an XL PYRO for sale - complete
with
hammerhead bar and pad: $75...as new condition.)

......I suspect you are seeing the difference between the start of a session and
the end of
one, or light air vs. heavy air. I really wrench the thing on my waist, and in
heavy air the
hook ends up at nipple level. If I know it will be heavier air all day, then I
use a seat
harness.
Most people here are switching to seat as they feel both their ribs and backs
are suffering
from too much kiting in a waist harness.
The most important piece of gear I have is a helmet.
Jim
Aloha,
Have some questions on waist harnesses and pads? First should the
pad size match the bar size? It seems that a 10" bar with a 10" pad
needs some adjustments when donning the harness, like the pad is
to long.
Second, I have been noticing in photos that some riders wear their
harness pretty high below the chest such as the photo of
Ben Meyer in Kiteworld issue 09 while others wear around the waist?
Is this just personal preference for different riders or is there
something else going on here that I am missing?
Curious,
John
George,
Here are my general comments (trying not to be biased to any company):
1- LEI has dominated the kitesurfing scene (even the first kitesurfing
foil company, Concept Air, has abandoned their water kites and now
distributing Wipika LEI)
2- Foils are still very popular among kiteskiers due to their
exceptional speed (speed that scares..); however LEIs have become more
and more popular among kitesnowboarders due to their ease of jumping
and long hang time. [Note: kitesurfing speed record should be broken
by a foil - yes, a non-water-relauncheable one - not a LEI]
3- A smaller board needs a bigger kite and a bigger board need a
smaller kite. Board of the same surface needs similar kite size
(longer/narrower board is better for cruising and high jumping,
shorter/fatter board is better for tricks).
4- Newer kites (both foils and LEIs) are ALWAYS better than older ones
(must be something to do with the deformation of the kite after
months/years of use ???)
5- For most kiters, most (if not all) modern LEI kites are good enough
(or more than enough) for everyday kiting; however, some very well
designed LEI kites can offer some very nice features (they are many
but if you need them then you probably have enough experience and
knowledge to judge and look for them...)
6- Modern LEI kites can depower much more than older ones so make sure
your trim strap and/or chicken loop is long enough (e.g. I am hanging
onto 9m modern LEI in wind stronger than I normally used the 5.5 Naish
or 6.5m LEI in the past)
7- The current trend is to go for shorter/fatter board for tricks;
however, longer/narrower board (of the same surface area) can hold as
much power and the jump can be "too high for comfort".
Hung.

Hi all,
I'm still pretty much a newbie at kitesurfing and I
don't have much experience with different
equipment/manufacturers. I have four boards. Three
are homemade (see attachment) and one is an old
directional. I have 3 kites - a 2001 Cabrinha BT
15.5/21.5 (still holds air), a 2002 Airush Lift
12.2/15.2 and a 2000 Wipika LTR 8.5/11.5.
What I would like to know is what others are riding
and flying and why they prefer a specific type of
board and kite.
Cheers,
George (aka "Jake")
